Nassim Haramein, mathematical physicist and director of the International Space Federation, has spent three decades chasing the holy grail of science — unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity. Building on Einstein and Rosen's 1930s equations, wormholes, and failed proton radius predictions, Haramein claims a simple tweak unlocks the secrets of the proton, the strong force, gravity, and the fluid dynamics of spacetime itself. In this conversation, we explore zero-point energy, the quantum vacuum, and a vision for future technologies rooted in a unified theory of physics.PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-showOUR HOMEBREWED MUSICCheck out our band's new album:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-hereVinyl pre-orders available now: https://buy.stripe.com/14A5kC3Od5d21Ms7zPdEs09Follow Nassim at https://spacefed.com/00:00 Go! Our friend, physicist and economist Erald Kolasi, stops by the Macro N Cheese clubhouse to talk with Steve about the profound effects of AI on the energy grid, water resources, and societal infrastructure. The discussion focuses primarily on large-scale corporate AI, such as generative AI. Erald's work bridges physics, economics, and ecology, revealing how AI's rapid expansion is not just a technological phenomenon but a biophysical crisis – one that's easy to overlook. Cloud is such a gentle word. Diaphanous. It sounds harmless. Lovely, even.“When you're in front of your computer and you're just typing away and you're asking these systems to do all these magical things for you, it can seem like it comes out of nowhere. But no, in reality, all of this stuff takes enormous energy.” AI's dematerialized facade obscures its physical infrastructure. It's a classic capitalist contradiction where "progress" accelerates ecological breakdown. Erald and Steve talk about the race to the bottom, as states and municipalities trade public health for tax revenue. Regulatory enforcement is absent. While exploiting labor and plundering nature, the costs are socialized as these companies use public water and energy grids. Elon Musk's xAI Colossus is based in Tennessee. (Remember the TVA, that impressive example of depression-era federal works? Help yourself, Elon.) It's not just that they use public water and energy, it's the vast and growing amounts of these resources, as Erald explains. The conversation also touches on the AI arms race, as the US competes with China, using “national security” as an excuse to justify resource wars. From energy consumption to water depletion, from labor displacement to geopolitical tensions, this episode exposes the contradictions of AI under a system that prioritizes profit over sustainability. Erald Kolasi is a writer and researcher focusing on the nexus between energy, technology, economics, complex systems, and ecological dynamics. His book, The Physics of Capitalism, came out from Monthly Review Press in February 2025. He received his PhD in Physics from George Mason University in 2016. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1122: Ford's Doug Field maps a Silicon Valley–style path to a $30K EV truck, Mitsubishi debuts a luxury-inspired “Gallery” store concept, and OpenAI brings GPT-4o back after users missed its supportive “yes man” tone.Meet the man behind Ford's push for affordable EVs: Doug Field, Ford's EV chief, is channeling his inner Elon Musk by leaning on hardcore engineering, radical manufacturing changes, and first-principles thinking.Field's career spans some of the most ambitious mobility projects of the last 20 years—Segway, Tesla's Model 3, and Apple's secretive car program.Applying “first principles thinking,” he's cutting battery size, body weight, and part count by 20% while keeping Mustang-like acceleration.“Physics isn't proprietary,” Field noted when asked about similarities to Tesla's approach. “The best part is no part.”He admits shifting a century-old company isn't easy: “Doing something new at an established company requires overcoming inertia… I came in with slightly unrealistic expectations of how quickly [things could be changed], but that's an industry thing, not just a Ford thing.”Mitsubishi Motors will open its first U.S. “Gallery” dealership in Antioch, Tenn., by Q1 2026, blending luxury-style retail with mass-market appeal as part of its Momentum 2030 growth plan.Located in the Century Farms mixed-use development, the store will be designed for browsing, with a no-pressure, open-format showroom more common in luxury brands.Instead of a traditional lot packed with vehicles, the Gallery will store inventory off-site at its partner dealer—City Auto Mitsubishi—and bring in vehicles as customers progress toward a purchase.Trained brand specialists from the partner dealer will walk shoppers from discovery through final paperwork, focusing on experience rather than volume.CEO Mark Chaffin says Mitsubishi is “underrepresented” in the U.S., aiming to grow from one-third to over half of new-car markets by 2030.“The Gallery dealership program is key to introducing customers to our vehicles in a welcoming, surprise-and-delight way,” Chaffin said.Responding to user backlash over GPT-5's cooler tone, OpenAI has reinstated the beloved GPT-4o model for Plus subscribers, promising to make GPT-5 warmer over time. CEO Sam Altman says many missed GPT-4o's overly-agreeable “yes man” style — for some, it was the only real encouragement they'd ever received.GPT-4o's style, removed earlier this year, was criticized as “too sycophant-y,” gushing over mundane prompts with “absolutely brilliant” and similar praise.Altman says some users found it life-changing: “Please can I have it back? I've never had anyone in my life be supportive of me.”He warns even small tone tweaks can impact billions of chatJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the German physicist who, at the age of 23 and while still a student, effectively created quantum mechanics for which he later won the Nobel Prize. Werner Heisenberg made this breakthrough in a paper in 1925 when, rather than starting with an idea of where atomic particles were at any one time, he worked backwards from what he observed of atoms and their particles and the light they emitted, doing away with the idea of their continuous orbit of the nucleus and replacing this with equations. This was momentous and from this flowed what's known as his Uncertainty Principle, the idea that, for example, you can accurately measure the position of an atomic particle or its momentum, but not both. Some places on Earth seem to completely defy the laws of physics! Take the Devil's Kettle waterfall in Minnesota, where half the river mysteriously disappears into a hole, and no one knows where it goes! In Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni salt flats turn into a massive mirror after rain, making it look like you're walking on the sky. Then there's Magnetic Hill in Canada, where cars seem to roll uphill, even though it's technically an optical illusion. In Turkmenistan, the Gates of Hell is a massive fiery crater that's been burning for decades after a drilling accident—it looks otherworldly! And in Australia, Wave Rock looks like a giant frozen wave, even though it's just a solid rock formation formed over millions of years. These places make Earth feel like something straight out of a sci-fi movie! He earned a degree in Physics from Duquesne University. Ed has gained recognition for overcoming personal struggles with addiction and poverty. We recorded this at our 2025 Learning Leader Growth Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona. He's the author of Hard Lessons From The Hurt Business.  Notes: Key Learnings The Heaviest Weight at the Gym is the Front Door – Starting is often the hardest part. "Zero to one is the hardest part" in any endeavor. Once you begin, momentum builds, but that first step requires the most effort. How You Feel is Irrelevant – "How you feel about doing something is irrelevant. If it is vital to your success, you've gotta bump to the wall a bunch of times." Discipline isn't about motivation—it's about doing what's necessary regardless of feelings. Sobriety: The Hardest Fight – 13+ years sober, describing it as "the hardest fight I've ever had." The turning point came during basic training when he built an identity completely free of alcohol for the first time in his adult life. From Being Liked to Being Respected – "When people like you, they want to party with you... When people respect you, you start getting invited back to family events." Shifted focus from seeking approval through partying to earning respect through character. The Baby Shower Revelation – Breakthrough moment when friends showed up with gifts for his unborn child, "all because he is my human." Realized people genuinely cared about him, which became the foundation for believing he mattered. Taking Ownership vs. Playing Victim – "A judge and a jury do not care about my terrible upbringing if I commit a crime." Despite growing up next to a crack house with family addiction issues, I chose accountability over excuses. Net Positive Impact Philosophy – Goal with raising children: "Make sure they are a net positive, they make things better. At the very least, let's make sure they don't mess anything up." Everyone has an impact on the world for better or worse. Practice Until You Can't Forget – Boxing taught the overlearning principle: going beyond basic competency to automatic response. "We practice until we can't forget... Either you get it or you'll make a mistake, and you probably won't make the mistake more than twice." Tolerance for Boredom Builds Excellence – "If you can be bored, you can go really far because a lot of it is just repetition of really basic things." Elite performers master fundamentals through unglamorous repetition. Body Language Shapes Internal State – "You smile, you feel happy... puff up your chest and the testosterone flows." Physical presentation affects how you feel internally and influences others around you. Fear vs. Responsibility Evolution – Early motivation came from fear of embarrassment; current motivation comes from a sense of responsibility to others. Shift from avoiding personal failure to ensuring others are taken care of. Redefining "At Your Best" – Past definition: having enough money, time, and no worries. Current definition: "Everyone in the house is taken care of." Evolution from internal satisfaction to external impact. Strategic Hardship Introduction – For teaching children without trauma: "Introduce hardships strategically and with awareness." Like weight training—incremental challenges build strength; too much too soon causes injury. Useful Quotes: "How you feel about doing something is irrelevant. If it is vital to your success, you've gotta bump to the wall a bunch of times." "The heaviest weight at the gym is the front door." "When people like you, they want to party with you... When people respect you, you start getting invited back to family events." "You have an impact on the world, for better or worse, that makes a huge difference in allowing a person to not destroy themselves." "We practice until we can't forget." "If you can be bored, you can go really far." "I've had my ego dragged through the mud a lot." "What do you want your obituary to say? I didn't just dabble." "When you're completely selfless, then you're fearless. It's the 'what's gonna happen to me' that creates the fear." "Everyone's always either walking in love or fear." "I hope my kid remembers that I was a present happy dude." Life Lessons: Discipline Over Mood – Make decisions based on necessity, not feelings. Success comes from identifying what must be done and executing consistently. Identity Building Without Vices – Spend time in environments completely free from your struggles to build new neural pathways and self-concept. Overlearning for Mastery – Practice skills beyond basic competency until they become automatic responses under pressure. Authentic Accountability – Find mentors who "live what they're yelling at you about." Real influence comes from demonstrated behavior, not just words. Incremental Challenge Builds Resilience – Introduce difficulties gradually to build strength rather than overwhelming with too much too soon. Present Moment Parenting – Model calm behavior during stressful situations because children mirror your emotional energy. External Focus Creates Fulfillment – Shift from personal satisfaction to ensuring others are taken care of for a deeper sense of purpose. Childhood Dreams Reveal True Interests – "What did you want to do when you were 10-12?" Often reveals authentic passions before social conditioning. Breaking Generational Cycles – Consciously choose different patterns than your upbringing to create better outcomes for the next generation. Humility Through Struggle – Getting "ego dragged through the mud" builds character and perspective that success alone cannot provide. Luck Recognition Builds Gratitude – "The only difference between you and me is that I was lucky." Understanding the role of circumstances builds empathy.   Apply to be part of my next Learning Leader Circle.

From a falling apple to the fabric of spacetime, how did humanity unravel the rulebook of the universe? This episode of The Human Odyssey takes you on a journey through the most profound revolution in the history of human thought: the story of physics. We begin in the clockwork universe of Isaac Newton, a world of certainty and predictability where the same laws governed the planets and a cannonball. For centuries, it seemed we had solved the puzzle of creation. But as the 19th century closed, cracks began to appear in this perfect edifice. We'll explore the baffling puzzles, like the "ultraviolet catastrophe" and the "photoelectric effect," that classical physics couldn't solve, setting the stage for a radical new understanding. Join us as we witness the two great upheavals of the 20th century. We'll follow Max Planck and Albert Einstein as they take the "quantum leap," revealing a bizarre subatomic world of probability and uncertainty. Then, we'll journey with Einstein again as he completely rewrites our understanding of space, time, and gravity with his theory of general relativity. Finally, we arrive at the frontier of modern physics—the quest for a unified theory, the "unfinished symphony" that seeks to connect the world of the very large with the world of the very small. This is the story of how our conception of reality was shattered and rebuilt, time and again, by humanity's relentless curiosity. In this episode, Adam McCauley speaks to physicist and award-winning science writer Frank Close about his new history of the development of nuclear power and the extraordinary minds behind it. Beginning with Henri Becquerel's accidental discovery in 1896 Paris, Close explores the unlikely origins of the nuclear age through the chain reaction of scientific breakthroughs and personal obsessions that set the stage for the splitting of the atom. It is the ultimate story of how pursuit of this hidden source of nuclear power, which began innocently and collaboratively, was overwhelmed by the politics of the 1930s, and following devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki opened the way to a still more terrible possibility: a thermonuclear bomb, the so-called “backyard weapon”, that could destroy all life on earth – from anywhere. Frank Close is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at Oxford University and Fellow Emeritus in Physics at Exeter College, Oxford. #369 In this episode, Guy spoke with physicist and spiritualist David Clements about the profound energy transformations occurring within and around us. David shared his journey from struggling with mathematics as a child to becoming an expert in theoretical physics and energetics. He discussed the impact of meditation and collective consciousness on the transformation of matter and human bodies, highlighting how high energetics emitted by people worldwide are shaping our environment. David also delved into his experiences with remote viewing, the importance of connecting with the higher self, and the role of advanced beings in assisting humanity's current transitions. The episode underscores the significance of inner work, healing, and awareness in achieving profound personal and collective transformations. About David: In my early days, I began as an artist, spending most of my time dreaming and imagining beyond the reality I was living in. Which later, after a door inside me opened, allowed me to develop a deep intuitive insight into the conscious quantum nature of reality. But before this fully opened, I was propelled into, and became, a professional theoretical physicist, working in string theory (a theory of subatomic particles and multi-dimensional spaces) as well as advanced theories of electromagnetism in some of the world's leading and prestigious academic institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford Universities. I left this profession because the opening within had revealed to me a very different view of the living conscious nature of quantum reality, a far distance from the mathematical and structured world I had learnt to work in.My conscious awakening, and connection with the higher aspects of myself began just after the year 2000, when I learned to view remotely. From here, my intuition and energetic senses came alive in ways I never before imagined possible. From here, I began a deep journey, moving into, and becoming more heart centered. Unravelling the many layers of past and current life aspects within myself to gain more connection to the Creative Source field consciousnes of love and my whole Self. In doing so, I was given deeper insights into the workings of realities, as well as inspirations for innovations and ideas, that it is my heart felt joy to share with others. Could the future see the emergence and adoption of a new field of engineering called nucleonics, in which the energy of nuclear fusion is accessed at relatively low temperatures, producing abundant clean safe energy? This kind of idea has been discussed since 1989, when the claims of cold fusion first received media attention. It is often assumed that the field quickly reached a dead-end, and that the only scientists who continue to study it are cranks. However, as we'll hear in this episode, there may be good reasons to keep an open mind about a number of anomalous but promising results. Our guest is Jonah Messinger, who is a Winton Scholar and Ph.D. student at the Cavendish Laboratory of Physics at the University of Cambridge. How does philosophy inform modern physics? And how do physicists incorporate philosophy into their research? On this episode, we dive into those questions with philosopher Dr. Timothy McGrew and astrophysicist Dr. Luke Barnes in order to help you fine tune your thinking about the fine tuning of the universe. Critics of the fine-tuning argument will often invoke probabilities in order to get around the argument's deeper implication of the existence of God. Tim and Luke will explore some of the issues in probability theory as it informs the physics of the fine-tuning argument. Dr. Timothy McGrew https://timothymcgrew.com/ Timothy McGrew is Professor of Philosophy at Western Michigan University, where he has taught for the past 25 years. His research interests include formal epistemology, the history and philosophy of science, and the history and philosophy of religion. Enter the world of the knuckleball and its specialized lingo: drag crisis, loop de loop, and dreaded forward roll. The knuckleball pitch is dying out in baseball, but Chris Nowlin still teaches it and, importantly, still throws it with the lowest rotation on earth today. He discusses here how to throw it, why it's effective, and why it's so darn hard to throw consistently. He also offers guidance on identifying potential knuckleballers, strength training, arm protection, and being a big-league pitcher in general, along with a bit of life advice. We also discuss Matt Waldron of the Padres along with other knuckleballers: Tim Wakefield, Phil Niekro, RA Dickey, and Charlie Hough. Show Notes – Jumping (Yes, Really) In this remastered episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the gang takes a long, hard leap into the mechanics of jumping in tabletop role-playing games. Whether you're trying to cross a chasm, leap onto a moving cart, or just escape your problems with a dramatic rooftop exit, this episode breaks down how jumping actually works—and how it should work—across Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder systems. Tyler, Randall, and Ash discuss the rules-as-written, the rules-as-abused, and the physics-as-ignored, covering how different systems treat vertical leaps, long jumps, and gravity's cruel embrace. Expect intense debates on standing jumps, running starts, and whether barbarians are just kangaroos in plate mail. And yes, Tyler did the math. Again. Key Takeaways: D&D 5e's jump rules are deceptively simple, which means players either forget they exist or completely break them with Strength scores that shouldn't be legal. Pathfinder 2e offers more structured mechanics, but the math still gets wild when people start asking how fast someone can fall upward. Movement matters. A running start can double your jump distance—unless you forgot you're wearing heavy armor and just did a faceplant off a ledge. Gravity always wins. Unless you're a monk, a bird, or someone with Feather Fall queued up like an escape clause. Vertical jumps are not your friend. Want to leap 10 feet straight up? Better bring a ladder or a wizard. Fall damage is a harsh mistress. DMs often improvise gravity as punishment for clever ideas. Ash thinks jumping is overrated. Also, he doesn't trust horses. This is probably unrelated, but important. Randall's Rule of Cool: If a cinematic leap sounds awesome, do it—and then figure out the rules after you land. Tyler's Law of Calculated Regret: Always check your jump distance before describing your character leaping across a 30-foot canyon. DMs should know the jump rules—but also know when to throw them out the window like a rogue with a running start and nothing to lose. Large Language Models and Emergence: A Complex Systems Perspective (Prof. David C. Krakauer)

Prof. David Krakauer, President of the Santa Fe Institute argues that we are fundamentally confusing knowledge with intelligence, especially when it comes to AI.He defines true intelligence as the ability to do more with less—to solve novel problems with limited information. This is contrasted with current AI models, which he describes as doing less with more; they require astounding amounts of data to perform tasks that don't necessarily demonstrate true understanding or adaptation. He humorously calls this "really shit programming".David challenges the popular notion of "emergence" in Large Language Models (LLMs). He explains that the tech community's definition—seeing a sudden jump in a model's ability to perform a task like three-digit math—is superficial. True emergence, from a complex systems perspective, involves a fundamental change in the system's internal organization, allowing for a new, simpler, and more powerful level of description. He gives the example of moving from tracking individual water molecules to using the elegant laws of fluid dynamics. For LLMs to be truly emergent, we'd need to see them develop new, efficient internal representations, not just get better at memorizing patterns as they scale.Drawing on his background in evolutionary theory, David explains that systems like brains, and later, culture, evolved to process information that changes too quickly for genetic evolution to keep up. He calls culture "evolution at light speed" because it allows us to store our accumulated knowledge externally (in books, tools, etc.) and build upon it without corrupting the original. This leads to his concept of "exbodiment," where we outsource our cognitive load to the world through things like maps, abacuses, or even language itself. We create these external tools, internalize the skills they teach us, improve them, and create a feedback loop that enhances our collective intelligence. However, he ends with a warning. While technology has historically complemented our deficient abilities, modern AI presents a new danger. Because we have an evolutionary drive to conserve energy, we will inevitably outsource our thinking to AI if we can. He fears this is already leading to a "diminution and dilution" of human thought and creativity. Just as our muscles atrophy without use, he argues our brains will too, and we risk becoming mentally dependent on these systems.TOC:[00:00:00] Intelligence: Doing more with less[00:02:10] Why brains evolved: The limits of evolution[00:05:18] Culture as evolution at light speed[00:08:11] True meaning of emergence: "More is Different"[00:10:41] Why LLM capabilities are not true emergence[00:15:10] What real emergence would look like in AI[00:19:24] Symmetry breaking: Physics vs. Life[00:23:30] Two types of emergence: Knowledge In vs. Out[00:26:46] Causality, agency, and coarse-graining[00:32:24] "Exbodiment": Outsourcing thought to objects[00:35:05] Collective intelligence & the boundary of the mind[00:39:45] Mortal vs. Immortal forms of computation[00:42:13] The risk of AI: Atrophy of human thoughtDavid KrakauerPresident and William H. The search for a foundational theory of quantum mechanics that all physicists can agree on remains active. Over the last century a number of contenders have emerged, including Many-Worlds, pilot-wave theories, and others, but all of them have aspects that many people object to. Jacob Barandes has taken up the challenge, proposing a new formulation of quantum theory in which there is no wave function, only real degrees of freedom with fundamentally stochastic dynamics. We talk about this new theory and the challenges facing it.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/07/28/323-jacob-barandes-on-indivisible-stochastic-quantum-mechanics/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Jacob Barandes received his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University.
