Alistair Brownlee, Two-Time Olympic Champion | Everyone Was Surprised by How Slow I Trained

Alistair Brownlee is the only triathlete to win two individual Olympic golds, winning at home in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016. He retired at the end of 2024 after an 18-year career, in which he also won two World Titles, four European Titles and the Commonwealth Games. He also has two second-place finishes from Ironman 70.3 World Championships. This is a conversation about how he actually trained across two decades, in particular when he was at his most dominant and changed the sport: the volume, the intensity, what he would do differently, and lots more. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Second at Norseman two weeks before this recording, on what he calls zero structured sessions. What has held on, what has gone, and which part of the power duration curve goes first. The training week behind two Olympic golds: hours, sessions per sport, the swim, track and bike sessions he built the year around, and what share of it was actually done at intensity. Riding at 200 watts with a threshold north of 400, and running five minutes per kilometre when he has a 28:32 PB. Why he was that strict about it, and the two things it bought him. High intensity as the icing on the cake: why he thinks the icing contributes less than most athletes believe, and what follows from that if your cake is small. His test for whether an easy session was genuinely easy, why feeling hypoglycaemic on an easy ride tells you something, and why he will not give you a wattage or a lactate number for it. Injuries, and whether you have to take that risk to win an Olympic title. His arithmetic on what a month lost to injury really costs you, and what that means for today. What changes when you have 10 hours a week rather than 35: the one thing he would move about the intensity proportions, and the trap most age group athletes fall into. Sodium, cramp and the gap between the literature and what athletes report. Why he is not sold on sweat sodium testing, what heat training did to his own numbers, and the taurine protocol he uses in hot races. Journalist Hedley Thomas grew up knowing that his grandmother Gladys had vanished in the sea off Sydney in the 1950s. The mystery of what happened to Gladys helped to inspire his hit podcast 'The Teacher's Pet'.Hedley has had a storied career in journalism which has seen him win many Walkley Awards and expose a lot of corruption and dodgy dealings. But it has also placed Hedley and his family in harm's way. In 2002 Hedley and his wife Ruth were at their home when bullets were fired into their bedroom. The shooter was never found, and Hedley grappled with PTSD after the event.A couple of decades later Hedley returned to a story which had stayed with him for years. It was the about a woman named Lynette who had gone missing from her home in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Hedley's podcast about her story became a massive hit. Five years after 'The Teacher's Pet' began, Lyn's former husband Chris Dawson was convicted of her murder. Despite his recent appeals, Dawson will spend the rest of his life in jail for Lynette's murder.Recently, Hedley has started talking about the family secret which helped inspire the podcast when it first began.Further informationHelp and support is always available. Tamara is back from her adventures in Maine and the hardest part was trying to secure a minivan for the road trip. The trip was amazing, but unfortunately Tamara broke a tooth on the flight home. Rheannon is not excited by the idea of flying. Tamara is happy to fly along for emotional support. Rheannon's oldest daughter makes an unplanned appearance on the pod. Tamara is excited for the NFL Fantasy draft, but all she is hoping for is getting a good quarterback. Let the research commence. Tamara shares more adventures from Maine. Swimming in lakes and relaxing with board games. Rheannon is still fighting the good fight raising two independent girls. There might be early mornings and strong opinions at bedtime. Tamara watched two movies on the plane, and both were surprisingly too violent to watch in public. Let's just say that it went downhill fast.

Chronic back pain that no scan explains? Dimple Jangda sits down with Prof. Dr. Ali Irani — the first sports physiotherapist in the Indian subcontinent and physiotherapist to the Indian cricket team from 1987 to 1997 — to unpack why pain persists, why vitamin deficiencies are so widely missed, and what actually supports a long, mobile life.In this episode, Dimple shares her own diagnosis publicly for the first time: eight episodes of being bedridden with sciatica-like pain, MRIs, X-rays and blood tests that explained nothing — until one question from Dr. Irani led to an HLA-B27 diagnosis and ankylosing spondylitis.WHAT YOU'LL LEARN▪ The one question that changes a pain diagnosis: if pain is worst in the evening it's usually mechanical; if it's worst on waking and eases as you move, it points to something pathological.▪ Why vitamin D and B12 deficiency is so common — Dr. Irani estimates over half of Indians are deficient — and why sunlight alone isn't enough. In a study of eight Mumbai football teams training 3–4 hours daily in the sun, almost all players were still deficient.▪ The missing mineral: without enough magnesium, your body can't hold on to vitamin D3 and B12. Pumpkin seeds and roasted chana are traditional sources.▪ Why standard blood panels don't include D3 and B12 — you have to ask for them.▪ Swimming for spinal conditions, why extension exercises undo a day spent bending forward, and the posture problem behind widespread neck pain.▪ Brain mapping and the five states of mind — delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma. Athletes recalling their best games measured in alpha; those recalling their worst measured in beta or gamma. Why chanting Om and echo sounds shift you into alpha.▪ Lung capacity and lifespan: why breathing rate correlates with longevity across species, and what pranayama does to vital capacity.▪ Grounding and earthing — why two-pin phone chargers have no earth, and what that means for your nervous system.▪ Flat feet, foot arches and why insoles change posture, knees and spine.▪ Colon health and medication absorption — why cleaning the gut can matter more than increasing a dose.▪ Ice versus heat, cold plunges, pelvic floor health, Indian versus Western toilets and hip replacement rates.▪ Dr. Irani's 40-day no-gossip challenge, and why he believes your relationship with your parents predicts your success.ABOUT DR. ALI IRANIHead of Department, Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Centre, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai. Physiotherapist to the Indian cricket team 1987–1997. Two PhDs, in Sports Medicine and in Anatomy of Body Movement and Dance. Chairperson (International Affairs), Indian Association of Physiotherapists.ABOUT DIMPLE JANGDAAyurvedic health coach, author of Heal Your Gut, Mind & Emotions, and founder of Prana by Dimple. Swimming in his suit? Ava! No one should be nice to Drew. That's the second lesson. And put a shirt on! That one is just for Chase. Fall cannot come soon enough. That's what Brook Lynn is thinking. Also, how about those Cassadines? If you want to hatch a plot, pull off a heist, you will want a Cassadine. Preferably one with a moustache. Curtis could use a Cassadine right about now. Although, it's possible Sidwell will suffer just as much as Curtis in that cell. Listener Q&A, covering nine different questions/topics from building bike power as a runner and a collegiate swimmer moving back into triathlon, through what actually makes us fatigue during a threshold effort, to swimskins, power duration curves and lots more. We do listener Q&As monthly, the last Thursday every month. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Building the bike as a runner: why heart rate sits lower on the bike than on the run, whether that gap matters, and what it says about where the limiter is. Plus how to use a daily 20 km ride towing a 25 kg dog trailer. A 193 cm, 100 kg collegiate swimmer moving back into triathlon: the engine-stronger-than-the-chassis problem, a run progression specified down to the minute, and why Mikael gets more conservative every time he coaches this profile. Why the maximal lactate steady state is a steady state for lactate and not for the whole body, what keeps drifting while lactate holds flat, and what one study found when it looked for the system that fails at exhaustion. How long you can actually hold MLSS, against the 40 minutes the question assumed, how much that varies between athletes, and where critical power sits relative to it. Swimskins: whether they give you any of the buoyancy a wetsuit does, the performance, drag and energy cost numbers from the closest pool research, and the thing that matters more than the brand and price tag. Whether a swimskin does more for a fast swimmer or a slow one. Reading your own power duration curve with nobody to compare against: the TrainingPeaks chart to start from, why a flat profile means something different for a triathlete than a cyclist, and Strava as a stand-in database. Mikael's W' bands for male and female age group triathletes, on record for the first time, plus the critical power ratio from close to a hundred of his own athletes' tests. Quickfire round on altitude, heat and the CORE sensor, run volume by intensity, and vegan nutrition. This week on Swimming with Allocators, allocator Michael Wooten shares his journey from early fascination with investing to managing capital across multiple family offices and building a venture program in Silicon Valley. He explains how family offices differ based on principals' goals and control, why venture and growth equity should be treated as distinct risk buckets, and what he learned starting a venture effort from scratch. The conversation also covers trends in secondaries and SPVs, the challenges of liquidity and cyclicality in venture portfolios, the merits of generalist versus specialist strategies, and how LPs really diligence fund managers, emphasizing curiosity, communication, alignment, and not working with people who are difficult or misaligned. Also, Sidley's Michael Poldony explains how secondaries and tender offers have become a standard step on the path to IPOs, how strategic investors and secondary-only funds are reshaping late-stage liquidity, and why careful structuring, valuation awareness, and legal guidance are critical for both companies and allocators participating in these transactions. Men här verkar han lugn, nästan blyg.– Thank you, I think I'm supposed to talk in between. But I don't know, let's just exchange looks.

Send us Fan MailSwimming has spent decades asking coaches to become more professional. But has the profession done enough to support them in return?Doug Cornish is a former swim coach, financial planner, and the creator of the 2025 Swim Coaches Compensation Survey. His findings expose how precarious coaching has become: 38% of respondents reported working without a current contract, while 80% had no cost-of-living adjustment built into their agreements.Doug and I discuss why coaches continue accepting these conditions, how poor financial stewardship limits what clubs can provide, and why coach retention is foundational to athlete development and the future of the sport. We also lay out five practical changes that could begin moving the profession forward—from credible compensation data and honest job ratings to board education, stronger financial structures, and contract templates. This isn't just a conversation about what's wrong. It's about what swimming can actually do next—because if we want to save the sport, we have to start with the coaches.Doug's e-mail: doug@swimpler.comWebsite:  swimpler.comISCA Email 1: https://mailchi.mp/swimisca/coach-retention-the-future-of-swimming-depends-on-it?e=70a9f8d406ISCA Email 2: https://mailchi.mp/swimisca/can-great-coaches-afford-to-remain-great2025 Coach Compensation Survery Data10 Ways to Value Coaches

Follow Smart Travel wherever you get your podcasts.Smart Travel PodcastWinging It On Location – Days 9-11 - Finnish Lakelands: A Deserted Resort By The Lake, Epic Morning Drone Views + Helsinki Airport ChaosIn Days 9–11 of the Finland road trip, we continue north along Route 62 through the Finnish Lakelands, leaving our remote lakeside cabin behind and heading towards Puumala, where we cross the spectacular Puumalansalmi Bridge. From there, the road trip continues through some of the most beautiful scenery of the journey, with endless lakes, islands and bridges before arriving at Lietvesi and eventually Anttola. We then swap our rustic cabin for a lakeside resort, complete with swimming pool, saunas, paddleboards, canoes and plenty of opportunities to embrace Finnish mökki life.Day 10 is all about slowing down: breakfast, paddleboarding, drone flying, swimming, reading, a run through the local trails and, naturally, plenty of sauna time. We also sample some Finnish pastries and enjoy an excellent final dinner at the resort. Finally, we head to Mikkeli before returning the hire car and taking the train to Helsinki Airport. Along the way, I reflect on the entire Finland trip, including Helsinki, Route 62, the Finnish Lakelands, cabin stays, driving in Finland, costs, and why Finland might just be one of the easiest countries in the world to travel around. And, of course, there's a final introduction to the Finnish way of life: mökki life, saunas, nature, no internet and simply switching off.Finnish Lakelands AccommodationKuvalusdream Chalet - https://www.booking.com/hotel/fi/kuvalusdream.en-gb.html?label=affnetcj-11916287_pub-5108952_site-101051909_pname-Go+Travel+Un+Limited_clkid-3495d2d3e2334d21a223e3101-370217_cjevent-5b07c05f9dc911f1823700330a82b838&utm_source=affnetcj&utm_medium=bannerindex&utm_term=index-11916287&utm_campaign=xx&aid=818288&ucfs=1&arphpl=1&checkin=2026-08-22&checkout=2026-08-23&adplat=www-homescreen-recently_viewed_carousel-stays-n_a-n_aSaimaanranta Resort by Anttolanhovi - https://www.booking.com/hotel/fi/lake-saimaa-resort-mikkeli.en-gb.html?label=affnetcj-11916287_pub-5108952_site-101051909_pname-Go+Travel+Un+Limited_clkid-3495d2d3e2334d21a223e3101-370217_cjevent-5b07c05f9dc911f1823700330a82b838&utm_source=affnetcj&utm_medium=bannerindex&utm_term=index-11916287&utm_campaign=xx&aid=818288&ucfs=1&arphpl=1&checkin=2026-08-22&checkout=2026-08-23&adplat=www-homescreen-recently_viewed_carousel-stays-n_a-n_aSupport Winging It Travel PodcastIf you enjoyed this episode:⭐ Leave a 5-star rating or review on your podcast app☕ Support the show at buymeacoffee.com/wingingit

The anecdote that BPC-157 failed to fix someone's Achilles is the human version of publication bias, because nobody ever tells you about the thing that didn't work.(00:12:23) The European Championships format and the broadcast, which featured more talking heads than athletics on the BBC, and an athletic programme with far too little action relative to downtime.(00:16:52) The women's 800m, where Werro beat Hodgkinson for her fourth sub-1:55 of the year, and Bol ran a national record in third. Whose trajectory looks best in the medium to long-term?(00:28:26) Batocletti's exceptional sprint finish, and a Tim Noakes tweet asking why she could speed up at all. Ross explains the end spurt, the reserve we all hold back, and why this particular race proves rather less than it appears to.(00:31:52) A stat from Jason Henderson: Batocletti's last 200m was 28.17, Werro's in the 800m was 29.11. Not a typo, and we explain why the fatigue of an 800m is a completely different animal, and speculate that it's probably more common than you'd think for the 10000m races to finish faster than the 800m ones(00:34:37) Andreas Almgren's solo 10,000m, run at 26:43 pace for the final 8.8km. Tactical optimization and a signal for a sub 26:30 in the future?(00:40:22) Amy Hunt's four golds, and a newspaper headline that poured cold water on them.(00:43:42) Owen Ansah wins European gold under a doping cloud, having refused a test because he had a flight to catch. What counts as "compelling justification", and why a 2016 case suggests he is in trouble.(00:52:26) The tragic death of Fin Tarling, the near-impossibility of policing a 1,300km course, and Adam Hansen's call for better helmets, which are certified only to 19.5km/h.(00:59:47) Swimming, where Kate Douglass broke the 50m freestyle world record twice in a day, a 19-year-old German went under 14:30 for the 1500m free, and Lani Pallister beat Katie Ledecky over 800m for the first time.(01:10:46) And finally, South Africa versus New Zealand has branded itself "Rugby's Greatest Rivalry". Gareth is not buying it. Ross offers the context for why it's about more than rugby, but also great rugbyNo news show next week, but there's an interview show planned for Monday, and the members' Applied show will take overtraining next week Friday. The aim of this part of the trip is simple: get away from the cities, slow down and experience a traditional Finnish summer. The first two nights are spent in a tiny cabin in the woods at Kouvalas Dream Chalet, right beside a lake and complete with its own jetty, boat and, most importantly, a huge wood-fired sauna.Getting there is part of the adventure, including a short journey on a free motor launch after the paved road eventually comes to an end!Once we're settled in, it's time to embrace mökki life: cooking dinner, sitting beside the lake, rowing the boat, swimming, reading, flying the drone and spending plenty of time in the sauna. It's about as far removed from Helsinki city life as you can get.Day eight is particularly special. With clear skies, calm water and barely another person around, we get out onto the lake and experience exactly the kind of Finnish summer we'd imagined before the trip. There's even time to finally get the drone into the air after owning it for two years — resulting in some spectacular footage of the cabin and lake.We also get into what mökki actually means and why these small countryside cabins are such an important part of Finnish summer culture. After two nights, it feels like we've experienced our own little slice of that lifestyle. It's peaceful, it's remote, it's rustic — and it's exactly what this part of the Finland trip was supposed to be.Things of Interest

In this episode of The PE Umbrella podcast I am joined again by Dr Emma Powell for a fascinating and thought-provoking conversation about the role of swimming within primary physical education and why we may need to rethink what success in school swimming really looks like.Together, we explore the place of swimming within the wider PE curriculum, discussing how we can move beyond a narrow focus on outcomes and consider the broader experiences children have before, during and after entering the water. We delve into the concept of aquatic literacy, examining why confidence, competence, understanding and meaningful experiences in and around water matter just as much as the ability to swim a certain distance. Along the way, we discuss some of the challenges schools face in delivering high-quality swimming provision, including assessment, access, inequalities and the realities of adapting practice to meet the needs of all learners. One particularly powerful part of our conversation focuses on children's lived experiences of swimming. We explore the emotions that often accompany school swimming, from excitement and enjoyment to anxiety, self-consciousness and vulnerability. We also consider how seemingly small factors, such as changing room experiences, can have a significant impact on a child's relationship with swimming and water-based activities. We discuss swimming as a vital life skill and a form of 'protective armour' for children, while also reflecting on the barriers that prevent some young people from developing confidence and competence in the water. Throughout the episode, Emma shares practical insights, research findings and ideas that can help teachers create more positive, inclusive and meaningful swimming experiences for every child.Whether you're a class teacher, PE lead, swimming coordinator or simply passionate about helping children develop a lifelong relationship with movement, this conversation will challenge your thinking and leave you reflecting on what truly matters when it comes to school swimming. So what are you waiting for? Send us Fan MailA 24-hour flight just happened, and we cannot decide if it is a miracle of modern travel or a fresh new circle of misery. We start in full summer mode, talking about being home alone, how the house stays weirdly clean when the kids are gone, and the creeping back-to-school reality that brings uniforms, shoes, homework, and the nightly job of getting everyone to bed. Then we pivot into the kind of fun trivia that sends you down a rabbit hole: the yearly list of unique college football player names. We talk about what makes a name unforgettable, why punctuation shows up where it does not belong, and how a “normal” first name paired with an unfortunate last name can create real-world awkwardness. It is goofy, but it also says something about identity and the snap judgments we all make. From there, we dig into long-haul travel and what it would really feel like to stay on a plane for an entire day, from cabin comfort to turbulence anxiety to the price gap between economy and first class. And yes, we revisit the very real trend of nude dining nights at a fancy restaurant, because once you picture steak, napkins, and bathroom breaks, the questions multiply fast.We wrap with the most important turn of the conversation: swimming and water safety. One of us learned to swim at 28 while pregnant, and that story opens up a bigger point about adult swim lessons, breathing, confidence, and the fact that many Americans still do not know how to swim. From learning how pearls take years to form to swimming with sharks and slowing down in nature, she reflects on what it means to trust the timing of your life instead of rushing the process. Along the way, she opens up about intuition, letting go of the pressure to have everything figured out, and finding peace in the idea that growth happens one season at a time. This week, we talk about an Australian swimmer, who nearly won Olympic gold. Despite never getting back to the games, he was a huge celebrity, even marrying a famous tv personality, and being a power couple. But eventually, his mental issues, and lack of career led him first to doing ecstasy, and loving to party. This leads to full blown meth & heroin use. It also leads to a major drug distribution network, where all of his conversations were intercepted by police, making for good comedy, but a lot of criminal charges, due to repeated arrests!!   Lose the gold medal, because a Russian was cheating, marry the host of "Australia's Next Top Model", and sell meth & heroin, all across the continent with Scott Miller!!   Check us out, every Tuesday!
