John reflects on the summer, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, and the Police Athletic League being honored at the event. John and Sid also discussed Trump's role as the event's honoree, his impact on America and the world, and global leaders' respect for him compared to President Biden. Catsimatidis criticized rising crime in cities like Chicago and New York, linking it to failed leadership, the decline of mental health institutions, and the influence of socialists in the Democratic Party. He emphasized Trump's strength, and his concern for New York's mayoral race. The conversation closed with a critique of fake news, praise for WABC's commitment to truth, and excitement about Friday's celebration honoring both Trump and WABC's growth under John, Margot, and Chad. This wide-ranging segment begins with lighthearted gossip about Bill Belichick's girlfriend, Jordan Hudson, and her new "gold digger" trademark. The discussion then pivots to serious political and cultural analysis, exploring claims of documented financial fraud by a Federal Reserve governor and its implications for Democrats. The host presents stark statistics on Gen Z's views on marriage and happiness, arguing that despite popular belief, data shows married women with children are far happier. The conversation then turns to the controversial manifesto of the Minneapolis shooter, where the host claims the individual "regretted being trans," tying this to a broader argument about the effects of cross-sex hormones and media censorship. The show concludes with a prediction about a U.S. invasion of Venezuela to dismantle criminal networks.
A magnificent cultural biography, Positive Obsession: The Life and Times of Octavia E. Butler (Amistad, 2025) charts the life of one of our greatest writers, situating her alongside the key historical and social moments that shaped her work. As the first Black woman to consistently write and publish in the field of science fiction, Octavia Butler was a trailblazer. With her deft pen, she created stories speculating the devolution of the American empire, using it as an apt metaphor for the best and worst of humanity—our innovation and ingenuity, our naked greed and ambition, our propensity for violence and hierarchy. Her fiction charts the rise and fall of the American project—the nation's transformation from a provincial backwater to a capitalist juggernaut—made possible by chattel slavery—to a bloated imperialist superpower on the verge of implosion. In this outstanding work, Susana M. Morris places Butler's story firmly within the cultural, social, and historical context that shaped her life: the Civil Rights Movement, Black Power, women's liberation, queer rights, Reaganomics. Morris reveals how these influences profoundly impacted Butler's personal and intellectual trajectory and shaped the ideas central to her writing. Her cautionary tales warn us about succumbing to fascism, gender-based violence, and climate chaos while offering alternate paradigms to religion, family, and understanding our relationships to ourselves. Butler envisioned futures with Black women at the center, raising our awareness of how those who are often dismissed have the knowledge to shift the landscape of our world. But her characters are no magical martyrs, they are tough, flawed, intelligent, and complicated, a reflection of Butler's stories. Morris explains what drove Butler: She wrote because she felt she must. “Who was I anyway? Why should anyone pay attention to what I had to say? Did I have anything to say? I was writing science fiction and fantasy, for God's sake. At that time nearly all professional science-fiction writers were white men. As much as I loved science fiction and fantasy, what was I doing? Well, whatever it was, I couldn't stop. Positive obsession is about not being able to stop just because you're afraid and full of doubts. Positive obsession is dangerous. It's about not being able to stop at all.” Susana M. Morris is the Associate Professor of Literature, Media & Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology. You can find Susana at her website, at Instagram; on Threads; and on Substack. Oxford Professor in International History Steve Casey lays out the fascinating media history of the Korean War. He explains how the Truman administration promoted their case for participating in the Korean conflict to a nation fatigued from WWII, and how Truman faced public resistance led by his own commanding general, Douglas Macarthur, who used his powerful cult of personality and enormous public popularity to try and sway national policy, even as he was mulling his own presidential run for the other party. In this episode, Casey gives us a behind-the-curtain view of policy-making and political power in action that sheds light on a “forgotten' conflict and provides an early example of US policy makers deliberately using the media to build consensus and support for the the most powerful and deadly tool in their toolbox: War. His book “Selling Korea” shows how every stage of the war brought different messaging problems and media strategies.Initially expecting the conflict to be only a quick joint effort with UN forces against a fledgling North Korean army, Truman, MacArthur, and their allies failed to anticipate the brutal fighting conditions, nor did they expect China to deploy massive military forces in active support of North Korea's Kim Il Sung. The divide between North and South Korea still plays out in today's headlines with Kim Il Sung's grandson, Kim Jong Un.Heroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com

Dr. Dillon Pruett has lived both sides of stuttering: the anxious kid rehearsing every word and the scientist searching DNA for answers. His groundbreaking research, recently published in Nature Genetics, uncovered 57 genetic hotspots tied to stuttering -- proof that our voices carry a biological story as complex as any human trait. In our conversation, Dillon shares how his personal journey shaped his path into research, what the findings reveal about stuttering's overlap with traits like musicality and sleep, and why the goal isn't to “fix” stuttering but to demystify it. At its heart, this episode is about turning stigma into science and science back into compassion. You can read the study here. -----

I'm explaining the confusing world of DUI breath tests and answering one of the most common questions I get: should you take a breathalyzer if police stop you? Based on real questions from listeners and my own experience as a lawyer, I'm breaking down the concept of “implied consent”—that idea that just by driving in Ohio (and most other states), you're agreeing to breath testing whether you realize it or not. I explain what really happens if you refuse to take a breath test, clear up some common myths, and get into the details of how the law treats your so-called “right” to refuse. Whether you might face this situation yourself or you just want to understand how these laws work, I'm here with practical advice and smart legal insight. Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone who drives:Implied Consent is RealWhen you get a driver's license, you're implicitly agreeing to submit to breath tests if stopped by law enforcement—not just in Ohio, but across much of the U.S.You Can Refuse, But There Are ConsequencesRefusing a breathalyzer isn't as simple as just saying “no.” In Ohio, for example, refusal leads to an immediate administrative license suspension—the officer can literally take your license on the spot. It's About Evidence & RiskWhile refusing a test may keep law enforcement from getting direct evidence, it doesn't mean you avoid penalties. The decision to submit or refuse is nuanced and should factor in both the legal and practical consequences.Got a question you want answered on the podcast? Call 614-859-2119 and leave us a voicemail.
