Dr. Nikki Maphis didn't just lose a grant. She lost a lifeline. An early-career Alzheimer's researcher driven by her grandmother's diagnosis, Nikki poured years into her work—only to watch it vanish when the NIH's MOSAIC program got axed overnight. Her application wasn't rejected. It was deleted. No feedback. No score. Just gone.In this episode, Oliver Bogler pulls back the curtain on what happens when politics and science collide and promising scientists get crushed in the crossfire. Nikki shares how she's fighting to stay in the field, teaching the next generation, and rewriting her grant for a world where even the word “diversity” can get you blacklisted. The conversation is raw, human, and maddening—a reminder that the real “war on science” doesn't happen in labs. It happens in inboxes.RELATED LINKS:• Dr. Nikki Maphis LinkedIn page• Dr. Nikki Maphis' page at the University of New Mexico• Vanguard News Group coverage• Nature article• PNAS: Contribution of NIH funding to new drug approvals 2010–2016FEEDBACK:Like this episode? Israel has been fighting a war against Hamas for over two years. But even longer than that has been the Jewish nations' war against untruthful media messaging. Too many news outlets put forth an anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian, even pro-Hamas narrative, drawing moral equivalencies where moral equivalencies do not rightly exist. Chris Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax and recipient of this year's Israel's Top 50 Christian Allies listing, talks about Israel, the peace deal and the role of the media in telling the truth.

Hour 1: Keith breaks down all the mistakes Aaron Glenn has made in press conferences and on the field, Antwan Staley joins the show, and much more.
For decades, the United States backed efforts to achieve a two-state solution—in which Israel would exist side by side with the Palestinian state, with both states recognizing each other's claim to contested territory. The veteran negotiators Hussein Agha, representing Palestine, and Robert Malley, an American diplomat, played instrumental roles in that long effort, including the critical Camp David summit of 2000. But, in their new book, “Tomorrow Is Yesterday,” they conclude that they were part of a charade. There was never any way that a two-state solution could satisfy either of the parties, Agha and Malley tell The New Yorker Radio Hour's David Remnick in an interview. “A waste of time is almost a charitable way to look at it,” Malley notes bitterly. “At the end of that thirty-year-or-so period, the Israelis and Palestinians are in a worse situation than before the U.S. got so heavily invested.” The process, appealing to Western leaders and liberals in Israel, was geared to “find the kind of solutions that have a technical outcome, that are measurable, and that can be portrayed by lines on maps,” Agha says. “It completely discarded the issue of emotions and history. You can't be emotional. You have to be rational. You have to be cool. But rational and cool has nothing to do with the conflict.” On the Media is supported by listeners like you. To foster the best outcomes for our children and families, we need to shape culture, not be shaped by it. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses the role families play in engaging the culture for God's Kingdom. He shares the biblical, God-given design for marriage, roles of spouses, and children. To give guidance on how to be a culture-changer, Pastor Allen also talks about King Hezekiah as a model for us. Deception is rampant in media, and it's hard to know what to trust, but we can start at our kitchen tables by encouraging our families to lean into God's Truth.
This week on Everything Is the Best, I sit down with Crappy Childhood Fairy—aka Anna Runkle—to talk about practical recovery for adults who grew up with chaos, neglect, or inconsistency. We get specific about how trauma shows up in daily life (overreacting, shutdowns, people-pleasing, money and relationship spirals) and how to interrupt those patterns with simple, repeatable tools.Anna—an Oakland resident and Berkeley native—has shown people how to heal symptoms of childhood trauma for nearly thirty years. Known to more than a million followers across platforms (including ~929K YouTube subscribers and 78M+ views), she's a survivor herself, and her methods are changing lives every day.We also dive into her forthcoming book, CONNECTABILITY: Heal the Hidden Ways You Isolate, Find Your People, and Feel (At Last) Like You Belong (Hay House; October 7, 2025). Anna explains why a haunting sense of disconnection is an almost universal adult symptom of childhood trauma (and increasingly common even for those with “normal” childhoods), and how to rebuild connection with clear, doable practices. You'll learn:A plain-language framework for nervous system dysregulation—and how to come back onlineThe two-part daily practice (brief writing + short meditation) to reduce reactivity in under 20 minutesHow to spot “trauma time,” respond to triggers (yes, even unanswered texts), and choose self-compassion over withdrawalScripts and boundaries to rebuild trust, navigate conflict, and “read the room” without shameWhy consistency—not perfection—creates the conditions for real connectionAbout the book:In Connectability, Anna offers research-backed lessons, self-reflection prompts, and daily connection plans to help you: notice early signs of dysregulation, lean into healthy vulnerability, set confident boundaries, master the art of apologizing, and build the kind of close, reliable relationships that support lifelong well-being. It's a hopeful, practical path for anyone who struggles with people—whether you have a trauma history or simply carry old connection wounds in a lonely era.Produced by Dear MediaSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, we're watching the media scramble for survival as tectonic forces fracture the landscape—and the billionaires are building lifeboats while Mount Vesuvius smokes overhead. Why is The Bulwark declaring itself "the future" while The Washington Post and CBS News die? And what does it mean that CBS just hired Bari Weiss to, let's face it, manage the death of broadcast TV news? We'll reveal the secret to understanding what's happening to media right now: how Rupert Murdoch bought respectability, why MSNBC invested everything in elevating Never Trump conservatives instead of the Left that was right all along, and what happens when your most valuable credential is an impressive job title from an important-sounding institution. Is Weiss's new job the worst "falling on the grenade" position ever, or is she protected by the Prince of Darkness (kinda like Bill Kristol!) destined to fail upward forever? Why can't anyone save CBS News? And what happens when your real job is to manage decline while pretending you can "win back younger audiences!" who've already checked out?The earthquakes are getting stronger. The mountain is smoking. And the legacy media is frantically building lifeboats—but only for people who agree never to mention The Before Trump Time. Not safe for work. Right now, you should invest in anything but the S&P 500... Today we talk about what you should invest in instead. We focus was on market dynamics, particularly the strong performance of precious metals like gold and silver, the technical risks of recent market breakouts, and the caution needed after periods of rapid gains. We examine broader market trends, highlighting the relatively stronger performance of European and emerging market stocks versus the U.S., the importance of diversification, and more. We discuss... Precious metals, especially gold and silver, have been performing strongly, but recent market breakouts are showing signs of weakness, signaling caution for over-leveraged investors. September was a high-gain month, leading many investors to become overextended, with earnings season potentially introducing volatility. The precise reasons for gold's rise are unclear, though factors like central bank purchases and possible stablecoin-backed demand may contribute. Gold acts as a fear indicator rather than a production-based asset, with rising prices reflecting concerns over fiat currency and economic uncertainty. Historical comparisons show current gold-to-oil ratios are anomalous, echoing aspects of the 1970s stagflation period while oil prices remain low. U.S. stock market gains are outpaced by European and emerging markets this year, emphasizing the importance of global diversification. Average S&P 500 returns differ from actual realized returns due to volatility and sequence-of-returns risk, affecting long-term retirement planning. Electricity prices have surged in most U.S. states, highlighting structural energy supply challenges and rising costs for consumers. AI expansion is creating unprecedented energy demand, potentially driving electricity prices higher and stressing grid capacity. Nuclear energy development is critical to meet growing energy needs, yet decades of poor policy and infrastructure deficiencies hinder progress. Media narratives on energy and investment trends can be manipulated, requiring investors to critically evaluate information. Historical tech and AI boom comparisons suggest caution, as overhyped markets with high valuations may lead to significant losses. Investors should manage risk carefully, use first-principles thinking, and avoid greed-driven overexposure to emerging trends like AI.
