Salim Akram is a live sound engineer specializing in mixing monitors. He currently works as the Monitor Engineer for seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist Billie Eilish and eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer and artist Finneas. In 2019, he was featured in FOH Magazine and was a Parnelli nominee for the Monitor Engineer of the Year. After attending Art Institute of New England, Salim began to synthesize his technical skills in engineering with his life-long passion for playing music. He and his closest friends co-founded the band Bad Rabbits, where Salim would go on to not only tour with major artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Steve Aoki, Allen Stone, and Taking Back Sunday – but he would have the opportunity to work with producers Teddy Riley, Michael Elizondo, James Fauntleroy, et. al. in the studio. Bad Rabbits has won numerous Boston Music Awards, including Artist of the Year, perform as guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Arsenio Hall, and Craig Ferguson, and perform at huge festivals such as Vans Warped Tour, Reading and Leeds, and SXSW. While Bad Rabbits was writing music and taking an interlude on touring, Salim dove head-first into regular house engineering roles with local venues owned and operated by Bowery/AEG and City Winery, while simultaneously expanding his freelancing repertoire to include contract work for corporate juggernauts such as Dell, Apple, and Google, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Chanel, Puma, Sephora, and the Simmons Leadership Conference. However, when he was asked to build the touring monitor rig for Glassjaw, he realized it was just the catalyst he needed to get back on the road. Salim was introduced to Ms. Eilish in 2018 and continues to work as her Monitor Engineer through today. When he isn't on tour, he resides in Boston, Massachusetts, and enjoys photography, cooking, and traveling. Austin Schroeder is a Monitor Engineer based out of San Diego, California, who is currently in rehearsals for the highly anticipated Rage Against the Machine tour. An Iowa native, Austin started on piano at a young age, setting the groundwork for a deep and lifelong understanding and appreciation of music. His teenage years saw him develop more into a bassist, which he played in several jazz bands before ultimately ending up at Full Sail University, hoping for a degree in music recording. After moving to Nashville to work at the famed Blackbird studios, Austin tired of studio life and decided that perhaps he was better suited to life on the road and the more spontaneous feel of live music. A misunderstanding during his interview process at Clair Bros led to an opportunity at a smaller Pennsylania-based company, Allusions Lighting and Sound Production. It was here, that Austin's fate was set, and his career began to flourish. Among the artists that he has worked with are Iggy Azaelia, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Tom Morello, and Lupe Fiasco. In 2019, Austin was awarded the Parnelli award for Monitor Mixer of the year. Lastly, we experienced some technical difficulties with the volume. I hope this is not too much of a distraction for you, as we are still working out the kinks. Hope you enjoy! - Tangela

iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Austin Schroeder is a Monitor Engineer based out of San Diego, California, who is currently in rehearsals for the highly anticipated Rage Against the Machine tour. It was here, that Austin’s fate was set, and his career began to flourish. Among the artists that he has worked with are Iggy Azaelia, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Tom Morello, and Lupe Fiasco. In 2019, Austin was awarded the Parnelli award for Monitor Mixer of the year. Today’s episode is sponsored by ShowproBeardCo, & Boulevard Carroll. Bob Cowan is a front of house engineer and monitor engineer for bands bands like Metallica and Melissa Etheridge. Over the span of his 20-year career, Cowan has worked with artists like Ringo Starr, Sammy Hagar, Bruce Springsteen, and Megadeath, among others. He was even with Metallica when they broke the Guinness Book of World Records for performing on all seven continents, including Antarctica. Bob tells his story since his younger years, into college, and after college. He discusses how he beat cancer (30 years caner free this year!) and how it set him back when he first started his career. He took a step back, realized what had to be done, and tenaciously went for it. Bob lastly talks about his journey into Antarctica with Metallica. -- Links to products/websites mentioned: Metallica: https://www.metallica.com -- Quick links: :35 - About Bob Cowan 11:39 - Did you have any other careers that you were thinking out pursuing or did you know exactly what you wanted to do? 13:20 - Do you think the skills you didn’t want to learn help you today? 15:42 - Tell us about a time you were put into a situation that you weren’t prepared for. Dani Seggewiss is a Monitor Engineer originally from Cologne, Germany, who currently resides in Leeds, in the U.K. At thirteen years old Dani went with her mom to see a concert, and upon seeing the monitor and FOH engineers in action, she knew that that was what she wanted to pursue. Not that she had any idea of how to do it or how to start, or even what they were doing, but she knew that whatever it was struck a chord with her, and that she had to follow her instincts. The best twist to her story is that she now works for the very band that she saw that night, and continues to grow and learn with each gig. Today’s episode is sponsored by Airturn.com. It’s an honor to be celebrating my 105th episode this week with our guest, Monitor Engineer Bruce Danz. For the last 25 years Bruce has mixed monitors for some of Rock’s hardest hitting artists including Anthrax, Testament, Alice Cooper, Death Angel, and Buckcherry. He endured a sixteen-year run with Marilyn Manson while simultaneously mixing for Avenge Sevenfold, a gig that has lasted almost eighteen years. But life for Danz wasn’t always behind the desk. The Michigan native also spent his twenties as a successful touring bass player. Come hang with Bruce and I, as we dissect his career in the industry and how he’s found a way to keep rockin’ after all these years. Thanks for listening! Today’s episode is sponsored by Audible.com and ShowPro Beard Co.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! To help kick this year off our first guest is Cleveland native Lauren Crowley, Monitor Engineer for such artists as Ryan Adams, Eminem, Tyler the Creator, A$AP Rocky, Kurt Vile, and Jenny Lewis. Crowley cut her teeth in the Punk Rock clubs of Cleveland before eventually moving on to Full Sail University, and ultimately honing her skills at Eighth Day Sound. From there, it’s been a rapid climb up the ranks where she shares the stage nightly not only with a respectable roster of artists, but also with some of the best crews in the business. Thank you for all of your support in 2017 and here’s to an epic year ahead for all of us.
Working Class Audio #152 with Horacio Bolz!!! Horacio Bolz is an engineer/producer from Montevideo, Uruguay. By the age of 8 he was recording for fun and playing guitar and drums. While his life plan was originally to become a commercial airline pilot, it wasn't until later he realized that music, producing and engineering was what I wanted to do in life. So by the age of 18 he moved to the UK to follow that dream. Horacio started his Production & Sound Engineering studies at Alchemea Collage in London. Once there he began to work for Phil Manzanera and Javier Weyler as an assistant engineer. During this period he recorded part of Phil's last two solo albums (The Sound of Blue & Corroncho 2). In 2012 Horacio returned to Uruguay where he started working as head engineer at Vivace Music. There, he recorded and mixed songs for most of the best bands in the country. Meanwhile he started doing live related work as a Monitor Engineer for Uruguayan bands. 2013 was the year in which Horacio started his band The Islingtons. They released "1 1 2 3 5", their first studio album which was nominated for "Best New Band" at the Graffiti Awards. Since 2015 Horacio has been working as a freelance engineer, producer and musician. He owns (with his business partner Christian Eichin) a software development company in which they develop a free app called "Wavejam". A collaborative multi-track recorder for iOS devices. Horacio also owns Vincent, a Creative Audio & Film production company based in Montevideo, Uruguay. About this Interview: Horacio talks with me about his early plan to become a commercial airline pilot, his work with Phil Manzanara, import taxes in Uruguay and how that affects his ability to buy equipment, as well his ability to make a living and incorporate audio into his life even when faced limitations. -Matt Show notes and links: Horacio on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/horacio-bolz-33659957/ Fix Audio Designs (Paul Wolf) https://www.fixaudiodesigns.com/ After Master http://aftermaster.com/ http://www.500seriesmodules.com/ Sonarworks Reference 4 software https://www.sonarworks.com/
Parnelli award-winning monitor engineer Greg Looper knows firsthand the role fate can play in a career. For the last several years he has been with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, first as a systems tech for FOH engineer Robert Scovill, but eventually stepping-in at monitors, where he has proven to be an invaluable asset. A chance encounter with an old friend at the age of twenty-one led to a career with a staggering list of artists including the Allman Brothers Band, Prince, Soundgarden, the Cult, Aerosmith, John Fogarty, the Scorpions, Shannondoah, and the Deftones. Greg and I met-up in Forrest Hills, NY at a recent Tom Petty gig and traced the many miles of his journey, and the many mentors that have left their mark on him.
The trust between an artist and his or her crew is something that takes time to build. It’s a sacred thing. Bobby Tis, guitar tech and monitor engineer for the Tedeschi Trucks Band, has fostered that trust for close to 10 years. I spent an evening with Bobby at a recent gig in Simsbury, CT, and the level of camaraderie and closeness amongst the band and crew was certainly palpable. Bobby learned his craft from a long list mentors including his father Bobby Tis, Sr., well respected amongst studio engineers, and Brian Farmer, longtime guitar tech for Warren Haynes. Bobby’s love of what he does day in and day out keeps him going whether he’s on tour or engineering a session at Swamp Raga studios, Derek and Susan’s home studio in Florida, where Tis lives with his family, just down the road.
Rebecca Wilson is steadfast in her belief that the best way to learn is by doing. No fancy schools, no debt load to carry, just basic hard work, and being passionate about following your dreams. After just one night of doing monitors at a club for Fishbone, the band decided to pluck Rebecca from her club gig and take her on the road with them. A few days later, she found herself behind the mixing desk at Red Rocks. With a healthy dose of self-deprecation, a humble attitude, and a singular focus to please her artists, Rebecca can now be found providing audio support for His Holiness, The Dalai Lama.
30 years as a live sound technician. 25 years as Pearl Jam’s dedicated Monitor Engineer. Several years teaching, mentoring, and empowering the next generation of women in audio. Tune in and found out how Karrie Keyes turned a teenage love of Southern California’s Punk Rock scene into a lifelong career of touring with some of the industry’s biggest bands including Soundgarden, Fugazi, Sonic Youth, and Neil Young.
Becky Pell is one of the lucky people who is able to follow two of her passions and turn them into thriving careers. As a monitor mixer she has worked with an incredible range of artist’s including the Black Crowes, A-ha, Anastacia, Take That, Westlife, Kylie, Muse, and Natalie Imbruglia. As a yoga and meditation instructor she contributes to several magazines and blogs including Yoga International, Om magazine, and Adventureyogi. She is also a member of Soundgirls.org, where she lends her voice to help empower and educate young women interested in learning about the industry. Add in the fact that she’s English and you’ve got one bad-ass roadie!
What’s up roadies? This week’s cure for your case of the Monday blues is brought to you by monitor engineer to the stars, Steve Walsh. A 20-year industry veteran, Walsh has worked with some of rocks biggest names including but not limited to; +44, Blink-182, The Foo Fighters, Tommy Lee, and Maroon 5. Thanks to a little white lie nearly 20 years ago, Steve landed his first gig as a monitor engineer for Moby. After a few years on the road with Moby, Steve packed up, headed west to Los Angeles, and linked up with none other than Tommy Lee for Never a Dull Moment. Steve has since gone on to work with many other big name bands including one of Roadie Free Radio’s all-time favorites, The Black Crowes. Nowadays, you can find Steve on tour as monitor engineer for Rob Zombie. Walsh certainly has a knack for combining the artist’s ideal sound with what ultimately is best to come out of the speakers during the show. It's the combination of a great ear and some kick ass people skills that have given him such a respected name in his field. Kick back and listen to the story from Steve himself, and Pay respect to one hard working roadie.
It's no secret that for years the "road" has been a male-dominated workplace. However, that's quickly changing, and women like Rachel Ryan are forging new and indelible paths, demonstrating their might and talent, making way for a new generation of roadies. Mr. Soundlady, as Rachel is otherwise known, is a force to be reckoned with. As I dug around researching women in the audio field, her name kept popping up, and I couldn't help but be struck by her enthusiasm, her passion, and judging by her resume, her talent. An NYU graduate from California, Rachel has already logged an impressive amount of experience. She had the good fortune to have residencies at both the East and West coast Knitting Factories, Brooklyn Bowl, and has been on the road as both FOH engineer and monitor mixer for the likes of The Tallest Man On Earth, The Strokes, PHOX, Silversun Pickups, and is still the first and only woman to intern at Radio City Music Hall. In between the endless hours and concert halls Rachel has decided to go back to Graduate school to study Library Sciences. Badass indeed.
Drew Consalvo has been in the business for over 30 years and has been a monitor mixer for the likes of Moby, K.D. Lang, Pat Benatar, and toured with the Black Crowes for the better part of 15 years. Join me in the back of his tour bus as we talk about life on the road, his beginnings in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and how his Buddhist beliefs temper his daily life.
