In this episode we discuss our pilot evaluation of Family Safeguarding, part of the Strengthening Families Protecting Children (SFPC) programme commissioned by the Department for Education. SFPC aims to support local authorities to introduce one of three models of practice into their own area. These models hope to enable more children to stay in safe and stable family environments, so that fewer children need to be taken into care. This was the first report we published as part of SFPC in June 2021. Family Safeguarding was launched in Cambridgeshire in February 2020 just before the COVID-19 lockdown. The initiative is a multi-disciplinary approach to safeguarding, with adult specialist practitioners in mental health, substance misuse and domestic abuse working alongside children's social workers. Contributors: Presenter Nimal Jude, our Head of Practice Development, talks to the report's research lead Hannah Collyer. Later in the podcast Nimal catches up with Sam Howlett, Head of Family Safeguarding at Cambridgeshire County Council, to hear about her experience of being part of the Family Safeguarding pilot. Eva has spent the majority of her career at the intersection of digital content creation and aesthetic medicine. Most notably, she served as the Director of Practice Development at RealSelf, where she built out and scaled the RealSelf University customer education program, engaging with over 2500 practices along the way. Prior to her time at RealSelf, she held several different roles in digital marketing and practice consulting, including Director of Product & Online Strategy at Real Patient Ratings. Today she owns and runs a podcast production company that specifically caters to plastic surgeons. In this episode, Max & Eva discuss the nuances of how to make podcasting work for an aesthetic practice and why Eva believes that podcasting, while currently an under-leveraged channel in aesthetics, is well-positioned to become an effective medium for patient education and even patient acquisition.

Well, that's a great aspiration. But that's not really a goal, right? You got to have measurements so that you know whether or not you've achieved your goal.”“The people who work for [a law firm] really want feedback, and they want mentoring….They feel like the maybe the firm will teach them how to write a brief. But that doesn't mean that they feel like they're always getting as much guidance as they want in terms of how to present arguments and things like that.” CONNECT WITH AMY GARDNER, Law Practice Development CoachAmy M. Across the country Canadians have been scrambling to get their annual flu shot -- especially after being told by public health officials that it's vital we stay healthy during the pandemic to reduce the strain on ICUs and healthcare providers. But the high demand and lags in distributing the vaccine mean that many pharmacies and doctors are out of flu shots and are waiting for more to arrive. This week White Coat Black Art looks at why the flu shot is hard to come by this year and what that might mean for a possible roll out of a COVID- 19 vaccine. We hear from Dr. Iris Gorfinkel, a family doctor and vaccine researcher in Toronto, who says the wait for the flu shot can have ramifications for people who are at higher risk. She says inefficiencies in the system, including waste, could be addressed if Canada developed a national vaccine registry using barcodes that are already on most vaccines. Dr. Monika Dutt, the medical officer of health in Newfoundland, tells us how that province is managing an ambitious goal to vaccinate 85 percent of its population against the flu, compared to 30 percent in previous years. Sheli Dattani, the Director of Practice Development for the Canadian Pharmacist's Association says pharmacists are also having to turn patients away in some parts of the country because of high demand for the shot this year. While she's confident that Canadians will get the vaccine eventually, she says it's evidence that there's more work to be done to ensure a smooth rollout of any COVID-19 vaccine

How do we best learn? Design philosopher Stephen Anderson joins Dirk and Jon to explore various ways that people learn. The conversation spans kinetic learning, games as educational tools, and traditional theories like Montessori. The sciences are learning more about us and our world at a ferocious pace. One of the wonderful consequences is we have a clearer idea of how we, ourselves, can best learn. Capital One’s Head of Practice Development Stephen Anderson joins Dirk and Jon to explore leading edge learning theory, particularly as applied in professional environments. Memorable Quotes "By and large we are social creatures and we learn best together." "There's plenty of research showing when we use our whole body, we're more likely to remember stuff. So if someone was teaching me as a student, that teacher would encourage me to stand up and use my whole body." "So I look at Minecraft as an example. And I know Minecraft is quite explicitly being used in education now, but even before that, Minecraft is a learning environment. It's created first and foremost as a play space, but precisely because of the under specified nature of the game." "As prices come down in cameras and projectors, imagine if every light bulb in our house could project onto a surface and also see interactions. So now virtually all surfaces become interactive. So you can be at your cutting board and cutting something and getting feedback around like this slice of meat should be a little bit thinner or thicker or whatever. There's that sort of, again, you see these timeless ideas of feedback loops though, and interactivity and playfulness." "In Montessori, a core idea there is hands on learning, let kids play with tangible things. So you learn fractions by cutting up a slice of cheese or you play with these counting beads where a bead represents the ones unit. A rod of 10 beads is a tens unit, a square, which is 10 rods or 100 beads represent hundreds units and so on." "As long as we've learned how to learn, we knew where to go to get that information or to find the answer, I would say learning how to learn and developing a love of learning. If you can get that right, then the rest will follow." "So if you take almost a biological or evolutionary point of view, we're all these physical embodied creatures, we've got this brain, this organ that looks for patterns and makes connections." "it's almost like we spend 12 years teaching students up to actually get to play with math and do all the fun stuff and that they're done. Right. So it'd be like spending 12 years working at batting practice and never actually getting to play a game." "Especially as the world gets more complex, especially as we have more global systemic issues, I think there's a whole bunch of literacies that I would add to or make sure they're woven into the curriculum." When his company, Adaptive Path, was engaged by a financial services firm to redesign their website that let customers perform retail banking transactions, Peter Merholz, Director of Practice Development, went into the homes of users asking them questions about their usage of the existing website, the kinds of reports they recieved, how they used their computer etc. Designers, according to Merholz, must broaden their peripheral vision to other domains outside their own. A website designer, by habit thinks like a website designer. The task of designing a print document would be quite new and challenging for such a person. However, if designers thought beyond their domains, they would get a better grip on the nuances of design in general and deliver a richer experience to users.
