Send us a textWednesday brings the burning question that divides CS and sales teams everywhere: who should own expansion revenue? John Huber tackles this contentious topic with nuanced insights drawn from his experience managing both dedicated CS-led expansion models and hybrid partnership approaches. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all answer, John presents a thoughtful framework for determining the optimal structure based on deal complexity, sales cycle length, and organizational maturity. He shares specific examples of successful implementations, including a sophisticated model where CSMs handled straightforward upsells and renewals while account executives managed complex expansion opportunities. The discussion dives deep into compensation structures, forecasting methodologies, and the critical importance of clearly defining roles to avoid territorial conflicts. This customer success playbook episode provides practical guidance for leaders struggling to optimize their expansion strategy without sacrificing customer relationships.Detailed AnalysisThis episode addresses one of the most politically charged topics in revenue operations: expansion ownership. John's approach demonstrates sophisticated thinking about organizational design, moving beyond simple "CS versus Sales" debates to examine the underlying factors that should drive structural decisions. The hybrid model John describes represents an evolution in CS thinking, recognizing that different types of expansion opportunities require different skill sets and engagement approaches. His 70/30 compensation structure (70% quota-oriented, 30% experience-focused) within the variable component offers a practical framework for balancing commercial accountability with customer-centric behaviors.Particularly valuable is John's emphasis on forecasting churn and renewal business with the same rigor as new logo acquisition. His practice of conducting detailed risk assessments 4-5 months before fiscal year start demonstrates the proactive mindset required for successful renewal management. The recommendation to begin renewal conversations 12 months in advance challenges the reactive approach many organizations take to customer retention. The discussion also highlights the importance of cross-functional partnerships, especially between CS and finance teams, in developing accurate forecasting models. John's collaborative approach with his CFO shows how CS leaders can elevate their strategic influence by speaking the language of business operations. For revenue leaders, this episode provides a decision-making framework for expansion ownership that considers deal complexity, resource allocation, and organizational capabilities rather than defaulting to territorial thinking. Now you can interact with us directly by leaving a voice message at https://www.speakpipe.com/CustomerSuccessPlaybookPlease Like, Comment, Share and Subscribe. Freelancers and digital strategists are always looking for smarter ways to serve clients, raise their rates, and avoid burnout from endless “done-for-you” work. If you've ever imagined charging $5,000 (or more) for just one day of high-impact strategy, this episode could be your guide. This week, I'm sharing how I transformed my freelance business by creating profitable VIP Days that highlight my strategic thinking—no more endless to-do lists. Just four focused hours working closely with clients and earning serious income. I'll walk you through my “Four P” framework so you can start offering premium VIP Days of your own.Topics Covered In This Episode:The Four P Framework: The structuring of a successful VIP day revolves around four key Ps—Promise, Prep, Provide, and Propel.Define a Clear Promise: The success of a VIP day starts with a clear, outcome-specific promise that the client will get by the end (e.g., a paid marketing plan ready for their next launch).Thorough Preparation Is Critical: Ensure you and your client are both prepped before the VIP day. This includes onboarding questionnaires and clear expectations in your contract.Set Strong Client Expectations: Clearly outline what the day will entail and what's needed from the client. Doing this can prevent both disappointment and scope creep.Client Interaction Is Key: Unlike some “behind the scenes” VIP days, strategist VIP days are highly interactive and collaborative with the client present the whole time.Propel Clients to Their Next Step: At the end of the VIP day, provide a clear plan and next steps, which often leads to additional consulting or implementation work (more revenue for you).Leverage VIP Days as an Upsell or Lead-In: Many clients will want to hire you for ongoing or done-for-you services after experiencing the value of your VIP day—making this not just a stand-alone offer but a business growth strategy.Find the full show notes at: https://brandimowles.com/254Loved This Episode? Your ideal customer profile (ICP) is the north star for your entire company: it determines who you're building for and selling to. Though most growth-stage founders think they know who their ICP is, very few know how to update and refine it to keep the company focused as they grow—which can lead to a lot of headaches down the road.In this debut episode of a16z Growth's new company scaling podcast, the a16z Guide to Growth, a16z's Joe Morrissey (General Partner, a16z Growth), Michael King (Partner, Go-to-Market Network), and Mark Regan (Partner, a16z Growth) break down why ICP misalignment is often the hidden cause of common problems across the entire company, from pipeline gaps and bloated marketing spend to stalled product roadmaps—and dive deep on how to fix it.They offer tactical advice for defining (and refining!) your ICP as you scale, explain why getting it right requires company-wide alignment, and how to navigate the “precision paradox” when implementing it. Plus, why ICPs matter even more in the AI era, and how a well-executed ICP shows up across the business when it's working. When you go to buy a new car, you expect the salesperson to try to upsell you. They want you to add some options or a protection plan. You can expect the same when you go to the department store to buy a new shirt or some pants. Back in my retail days, they called that selling multiples. But I never expected my pharmacist to try to upsell me. Yesterday, when I finally was able to fill my eye drop prescription, the tech kept pushing me to schedule a Prevnar vaccine. They strongly recommend that everyone over 50 get one. And when I say strongly, I'm serious...
