The Brendan Banfield double-murder case is finally headed to trial, and once a case reaches that point, the conversation has to change. This stops being about speculation and becomes about evidence, witnesses, and whether a story actually holds up inside a courtroom. Let's walk through what jurors are really going to be asked to decide. What happened inside that Virginia home in February of 2023, when Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan were killed. Was it a murder conspiracy hatched by Brendan Banfield and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. They both shot Ryan. Then we'll look at the FetLife “catfishing” theory and the state's allegation that Brendan Banfield used the site to lure Ryan to the home as part of an elaborate scheme. Is the au pair's story legit, even though her testimony bought her a better deal in the courts? We're not judging character, we're wondering how the jury will see things. This case has mystery, alleged conspiracy, prosecutorial problems and questions surrounding the digital investigation. We're not picking sides and we're watching with interest to see what the evidence reveals.#BrendanBanfield #ChristineBanfield #JosephRyan #JulianaPeresMagalhaes #FetLife #Telegram #FairfaxCounty #HerndonVA #RestonVA #VirginiaCrime #TrueCrime #ProfilingEvil #JohnCarroll #PenneyAzcarate #EricClingan #BrendanMiller #KyleBryant #PatrickBrusch #FairfaxCountyPolice #CommonwealthOfVirginia #DoubleHomicide #CourtroomCoverage #PresumedInnocent #IRS #homicide #GIS #CrimeMap #crime========================================https://gamutpodcasts.com/show/gardensofevilinsidethezionsocietycult/========================================20% OFF Newspapers.comhttps://www.newspapers.com/go/podcast/?ref=profilingevil?xid=8877&utm_source=ProfilingEvilPodcast&utm_medium=podcst&utm_campaign=ProfilingEvil26========================================Email your questions to: ProfilingEvil@gmail.com========================================

When your own forensics expert contradicts your murder theory, what do you do? According to court testimony in the Brendan Banfield case, Fairfax County Police transferred him out of the unit.Brendan Banfield stands accused of orchestrating the February 2023 murders of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan with the help of the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes. Prosecutors claim Banfield created a fake FetLife profile in his wife's name to lure Ryan to their Herndon home as part of an elaborate murder plot. The motive? An alleged affair with the au pair. But the prosecution's catfishing theory has a major problem. Officer Brendan Miller, who extracted data from 60 devices in the investigation, concluded in his executive summary that Christine Banfield appeared to be the one controlling the FetLife account — not her husband. He found no indication she lost control of her devices and noted she was communicating with multiple people on the site, not just Ryan. His work was peer-reviewed by the University of Alabama and confirmed.Deputy Chief Patrick Brusch reportedly told Miller he would never work another digital forensics case in the major crimes bureau. Miller was transferred. The lead detective who also disagreed with command staff's theory was moved too. Judge Penney Azcarate called Miller's transfer concerning enough to order prosecutors to hand over all related communications. Now the case hinges on Juliana Peres Magalhaes — who took a plea deal offering time served after changing her story. She wrote to her mother from jail that she was heartbroken to be "doing this to Brendan" but needed to come home. This is the defense side of the Brendan Banfield case — and it raises serious questions about how this investigation was handled.#BrendanBanfield #HiddenKillers #AuPairMurder #ChristineBanfield #JosephRyan #FairfaxCounty #TrueCrimePodcast #MurderConspiracy #DigitalEvidence #CriminalJusticeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Salve! This is a preview of our latest bonus episode. Subscribe now at patreon.com/brazucasounds to unlock.Every episode is a different song. This is the song today:"Onda" written and performed by CassianoReleased on the third Cassiano album, Cuban Soul-18 Kilates, from 1976, "Onda" was never a big hit in Brazil until it found success through hip-hop samples. Combining Brazilian rhythms with American soul and funk elements, the song created a unique fusion, which now stands as a milestone in Brazilian black music. It's a psychedelic funk trip of nearly 8 minutes, repetitive vocals, sounds of crashing waves and seagulls, and one of the most beautiful bass lines ever recorded in the country. A genius but troubled figure, Cassiano faced many battles with record labels during his career, and imprecise accounts suggest that in 1978, he lost a lung to tuberculosis. The trial everyone's waiting for is finally coming. January 2026. Cameras in the courtroom. And a case that sounds like it was ripped from a crime novel.Brendan Banfield — a former IRS criminal investigative agent — is charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and a man named Joseph Ryan. Prosecutors allege Banfield orchestrated an elaborate scheme with the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, to murder Christine and frame Ryan as her attacker.According to the prosecution, Banfield created a fake profile on FetLife using Christine's photo — without her knowledge — and lured Ryan to their Herndon, Virginia home for what Ryan believed was a consensual sexual encounter. Instead, prosecutors say Ryan was shot and killed, and Christine was stabbed to death by her own husband. The four-year-old daughter was in the basement the entire time.Juliana has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and will testify against Brendan. She claims he planned everything — the fake profile, the gun purchases, even installing sound-canceling windows so neighbors wouldn't hear. But the defense is fighting back hard, pointing to digital forensic evidence they say proves Christine created the FetLife account herself. The lead prosecutor was removed from the case after a drinking incident. Investigators who disagreed with the prosecution's theory were allegedly transferred. And the only person talking is the one who already pled guilty.January 2026. Fairfax County. She moved to America for a fresh start. She ended up helping cover up a double murder — according to prosecutors.Juliana Peres Magalhães was a 22-year-old Brazilian au pair living with the Banfield family in Herndon, Virginia. She cared for their four-year-old daughter. She became part of their home. And prosecutors say she became romantically involved with Brendan Banfield — a federal IRS agent — months before his wife Christine was stabbed to death in their master bedroom. On February 24, 2023, Christine Banfield and a man named Joseph Ryan were both killed inside the Banfield home. Brendan and Juliana initially told police Ryan was an intruder who attacked Christine with a knife. They claimed they shot him in self-defense.But prosecutors allege the entire thing was staged. They say Brendan created a fake profile on FetLife — a fetish dating site — using Christine's photo to lure Ryan to the house. Ryan thought he was meeting a woman for consensual role-play. Instead, according to prosecutors, he was set up to take the fall for a murder Brendan allegedly committed himself.Juliana has since pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is cooperating with prosecutors. She says Brendan gave her a gun that morning and told her to shoot Ryan if he was still moving. The defense says her testimony is unreliable — the word of a woman trying to avoid prison.Brendan Banfield's trial is set for January 2026. He faces life in prison. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe holidays are finally over and the world feels like it's snapping back into place—shows return, routines resume, and the coffee hits just right. From that grounded moment, we wade into three stories that capture how people search for magic, beauty, and value in a noisy year. First up: the rise of fantasy‑core baby names—think romance epics, viral book series, and anime fueling a wave of Alistairs and Cordelias. We talk about why parents are chasing myth and nostalgia, how social media accelerates naming cycles, and whether a dramatic name helps a child carry story or just chases a trend. Then we pivot to the jaw‑clencher: fillers made from donated cadaver fat used for Brazilian butt lifts and breast enhancements. We sift through the medical pitch—sterile processing, minimally invasive injections, access for thinner patients—alongside the gut‑level ethics and consent questions. What does “beauty at any cost” mean when the supply chain starts in a morgue? We make the case for caution, long‑term safety data, and choosing dignity over fast results that mirror the lifespan of a viral reel. Finally, we break down McDonald's 2026 shift toward more consistent pricing and expanded rewards. Standardized price guidance could tame the location‑to‑location sticker shock, while loyalty programs sweeten value and tie customers to the app. It's a classic trade: smoother tech and predictable costs versus less human contact at the counter. For anyone feeling squeezed by inflation, these changes hint at how big brands will court trust this year—through clarity, not just coupons.Underneath it all runs a simple theme: the pull between escapism and stability. Names borrow wonder; beauty trends push limits; fast food promises order. We end by checking back in on home base—taking down decorations, settling into a rhythm, and choosing the slow, sturdy options when the world is loud. If this mix of cultural trends, ethics, and everyday choices speaks to you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review to tell us which story surprised you most.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening! Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Broadcaster Russ Williams, Marlon and Luke as Ben Davies netted his first Spurs goal for over two years but it wasn't enough to earn us the win as Sunderland hit a late equaliser on Sunday afternoon. The Welsh defender was on hand in the first half to give us the lead on what was his first start of the season – his first goal since scoring in the 4-2 defeat at Brighton on 28 December, 2023. However, the Black Cats levelled with 10 minutes remaining through Brian Brobbey as we had to settle for a point in an entertaining encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The draw in our opening home match of 2026 took our unbeaten Premier League run against Sunderland to 15 matches and leaves us 13th in the table. We also discuss the latest developments of Spurs during this summer transfer window, as Tottenham Hotspur have had an £8million ($10.7m) bid for Santos left-back Souza rejected. The Brazilian side have turned down Spurs' offer for the 19-year-old. Santos are hesitant to accept a bid for the teenager whom they have high hopes for and believe his value may increase in the future. On this episode, Harry Symeou looks back at what feels like another huge win at Bournemouth for Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. It finished Bournemouth 2-3 Arsenal in the Premier League. Evanilson put the cherries ahead after Gabriel's mistake, only for Arsenal's Brazilian defender to go down the other end and equalise within six minutes. A barn-storming performance from Declan Rice saw him score a second half double to put the Gunners 3-1 up but it was a slightly nervy ending after Kroupi halved the deficit. On this classic episode of ID The Future, we conclude a 2019 conversation between ID pioneer and biologist Dr. Jonathan Wells and distinguished Brazilian chemist Marcos Eberlin. The occasion for the chat was the publication of Dr. Eberlin's book Foresight: How the Chemistry of Life Reveals Planning and Purpose. A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Eberlin is a world leader in the field of mass spectrometry. His book was endorsed by three Nobel laureates. In the second half of the conversation, Eberlin explains how chemistry reveals foresight in the design of molecules and chemical systems. To the untrained eye, water looks like a simple clear liquid. To the chemist, it has 74 unique, even “weird” properties essential for life. And lightning seems purely destructive, but it, too, is essential for life. As Eberlin argues, both of these suggest foresight in the design of life — foresight to solve problems necessary to make life on earth possible. This is Part 2 of a two-part discussion. Source

Like, gave yourself full permission to get wild and audacious about your future? If you're like me, you might think you're a big dreamer—but you're actually thinking smaller than you're capable of. In this solo episode, I'm getting nerdy about the relationship between dreaming big, hope, and your future self. And here's the surprising discovery: hope isn't an emotion—it's a learnable skill. What you'll learn: Why hope is a state of mind, not an emotion (and why that matters for goal-setting) How hopeful people are better problem-solvers with more cognitive flexibility The concept of "utopian performances"—how imagining your future changes your present Why dreaming big might feel arrogant or dangerous (but your utopia always includes community) The 5-year dreaming activity that challenged me to think bigger Here's what the research shows: Hopeful people are more motivated, better at problem-solving, and have brains that can imagine multiple possible futures. The coolest part? Hope is trainable. I geek out a bit on performance studies (my research area!) and talk about how theater creates spaces where people rehearse living different futures. Brazilian theater practitioner Augusto Boal used "Theater of the Oppressed" to help people literally rehearse for revolution. The Big Question: Are you holding back on a goal because it seems too scary? Does naming it out loud feel too hopeful—like you're setting yourself up for disappointment? Your Challenge: Before you set your next goal, check your state of mind. Are you feeling hopeful? If not, cultivate a hopeful mind first—one that's motivated, good at problem-solving, and able to imagine your ideal future self. By just dreaming, you'll find yourself acting differently in the present. Your future self will come together faster than you ever thought possible. Fear of judgment can quietly shape how you show up, even when you are capable, prepared, and driven. In this episode of Unstoppable Mindset, I talk with Carlos Garcia, an attorney, Army Reserve JAG officer, certified Army Master Resilience Trainer, and high performance coach who helps people move past fear and into purposeful action. Carlos shares his path from growing up in Simi Valley to serving as a trial defense counsel in high pressure legal settings, and how his own fear of rejection once led him to stay quiet, second guess himself, and avoid opportunities. That struggle pushed him to study resilience, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, and to test those lessons through intense physical and mental challenges that reshaped how he shows up under pressure. Together, we explore why fear of other people's opinions feels so powerful, how the brain exaggerates threats, and why growth requires planned exposure to discomfort. We talk about preparation versus worry, training your mind before the crisis hits, and why small wins matter more than people realize. I also share lessons from September 11 and from my book Live Like a Guide Dog, connecting mindset, preparation, and courage when it matters most. Carlos's guiding idea runs through the entire conversation. Get calm so you can think clearly. Get bold so you can act with intention. Get after it so progress actually happens. If fear of judgment, public speaking, or stepping outside your comfort zone has been holding you back, this episode offers practical insight and encouragement to move forward with confidence. Highlights: 00:58 – Learn how early success can still create fear of judgment and quiet self doubt. 06:14 – Discover why exposing yourself to discomfort breaks fear predictions that rarely come true. 08:29 – Understand how preparation builds calm before pressure ever hits. 16:28 – Learn how to use stress as energy instead of letting it trigger avoidance. 25:23 – Discover why reflection turns mistakes into growth instead of shame. 52:04 – Learn why getting calm must come before bold action and real progress. About the Guest: Carlos is an attorney, certified Army Master Resilience Trainer, Army reserve JAG officer, and high-performance coach for smart, driven people. He's spent over a decade navigating high-stakes environments, from adversarial legal settings fighting for soldiers as a trial defense counsel to the frontlines of resilience training with soldiers and leaders. It all began in 2011 in Washington, DC, where high-stress, high-judgment, and constant pressure came with the territory. But behind the business attire and confident façade was a harsh reality: a fear of rejection that kept him second-guessing, staying quiet, people-pleasing, and missing out on opportunities he knew he wanted. For years, he avoided rocking the boat, held back in meetings, and lived for external validation. The result? He was invisible in rooms where he should've been leading, stuck on a path that didn't feel like his, and missing out on the roles, relationships, and rewards he worked so hard for. Then, he decided to rewrite the script. He dove into resilience training, went deep into neuroscience, psychology, ancient philosophy, and anything that could help him (and others like me) reject the fear of, well, rejection. That journey led him to the U.S. Army Resilience program, where he got certified to teach soldiers and leaders how to face judgment, stress, and adversity head-on. It led him on a path of continuous testing and personal experimentation—at work, in ultra running, and in combat sports including Brazilian jiu jitsu and judo. And eventually, he created True Progress Lab to bring those same principles to leaders who are ready to step up. His motto: Get calm—clarity starts there. Get bold—stability fuels courage. Get after it—progress demands action. The behavior of apparent non-human intelligent beings in certain alien abduction cases differs from other cases in that the victims are able to recall exactly what happened to them without the need for hypnotic regression. In most abduction cases reported throughout the decades, victims experience missing time, unexplained bruises and marks on their bodies, and other weird phenomena, and are only able to remember what happened to them after getting hypnotized. However, there are some cases - such as the 1957 abduction of Brazilian farmer Antonio Vilas-Boas and the 1973 Pascagoula, Mississippi case - where the abductees remember everything that happened without the need for hypnotic regression. This episode presents a hypothesis that might explain why there is a difference between these cases compared to the majority of instances where hypnosis is required to mine out hidden memories.Links/Sources:The abduction of Antonio Villas Boas - alien abductionUFO Update No 11 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet ArchiveAntônio Vilas-Boas - WikipediaAFU 19831100 APRO Bulletin v31 n10 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet ArchiveSupport Extraterrestrial Reality/Quirk Zone on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/c/Extraterrestrial_RealityCheck out my YouTube channel:Quirk Zone - YouTubeExtraterrestrial Reality Book Recommendations:Link to ROSWELL: THE ULTIMATE COLD CASE: CLOSED: https://amzn.to/3O2loSILink to COMMUNION by Whitley Strieber: https://amzn.to/3xuPGqiLink to THE THREAT by David M. It's time to induct some of our favourite ever characters to the Sports Bizarre Hall of Fame! There is no great honour in sport. Our first inductee encapsulates everything you'd want in a Hall of Fame member: pure shenanigans. Carlos Kaiser had one of the longest careers in Brazilian football, joining all the big four clubs Botafogo, Fluminense, Flamengo, and Vasco da Gama, plus stints in Mexico, Argentina and France. However, what made Kaiser’s career remarkable was not its length or being part of so many top sides but the fact that he never played a single game. This week's Open Mic guest is Jim Sutter, CEO of the U.S. Soybean Export Council. Prices and trade policy have challenged U.S. soybean exports, especially as large volumes of Brazilian soybeans have displaced traditional sales to China. Having met with Chinese industry and government officials, Sutter says the Chinese want a better trade relationship with the U.S. but he is also focused on market diversification. He believes the higher quality of U.S. soy and sustainable production practices should lead to a rebound in global sales.
On our latest visit into the ID The Future archive, we stumbled on this little gem: a 2019 conversation between ID pioneer and biologist Dr. In this first of two conversations, Eberlin speaks to the scientist's duty to follow the evidence where it leads, and explains how the incredible problem-solving engineering involved in just one structure, the cell membrane, may lead one to the conclusion that a mind planned it in advance. It's nice to hear Dr. Wells's voice again. We lost our good friend and colleague in 2024 at the age of 82. In case you missed our series of interviews remembering Wells, find the links below. This is Part 1 of a two-part interview. Look for Part 2 in a separate episode. Source
In this powerful episode, we sit down with Appio Hunter, whose early life as a Portuguese-speaking Mormon kid, his journey through conversion therapy, and his eventual path to love, self-acceptance, and healing make for one of the most profound LGBTQ+ Mormon Stories ever shared on this channel.Raised between Southern California and Utah by a Brazilian mother and a father with deep pioneer-era lineage, Appio knew from age four that he was different. By adolescence, he recognized he was gay –just as he was absorbing the harsh anti-gay rhetoric embedded in Mormon culture of the era. What followed was years of masking, spiritual turmoil, self-hatred, and the crushing belief that he needed to be “fixed.”Appio was eventually ushered into LDS-supported Reparative Therapy, including talk therapy, group sessions, “baseball therapy,” and even a type of 12-step program designed to eliminate same-sex attraction. This path led him all the way to the early 1990s offices of senior LDS General Authorities –including Russell M. Nelson and Henry B. Eyring –where he was held up as a "success story" of conversion therapy.Beneath the surface of being the “poster boy” for Reparative Therapy, the cost was devastating: self-loathing, loneliness, suicidal ideation, and the tragic loss of peers who didn't survive the program. Ultimately, Appio's journey brought him toward authenticity and real love. This is a story of survival, identity, love, and liberation –a must-watch for anyone navigating faith transitions, LGBTQ+ issues, or the legacy of Mormon conversion therapy.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1. Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology2. Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis3. Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions
