The reason for the early drop? Tickets for the BFI's excellent Film on Film Festival go on sale to the public tomorrow, 9th May 2025, and I wanted to give you a bit of insight into what makes this event so special. The Film on Film Festival runs from the 12th to the 15th of June and is dedicated entirely to screenings on physical film – from 35mm to 16mm, and even nitrate. It's a rare opportunity to experience films as they were originally shown, in all their analogue glory. While at the archive, I spoke with several of the experts who help make the festival possible and who work daily to preserve the history of cinema. You'll hear from:James Bell – Senior Curator of Fiction and Programme Director, Film on Film FestivalChris Stenner – Film Laboratory LeadSonia Genaitay – Curatorial ArchivistMartin Coffill – Projectionist and QCDavid Jones – Film Scanning LeadA huge thanks to Kieron Webb and Sarah Bemand for organising the day. It was a real privilege to explore the archive, meet the people who keep the machines running and the prints in circulation, and to share it all with you here. If you're attending the festival on the 12th, please do let me know and be sure to say "hi".BFI Film on FilmAll my links

While “Studebaker” is rarely the first name one thinks of when discussing motorsports, the company had a strong yet brief presence at the Indianapolis 500 in the early 1930s. Studebaker laid the groundwork with the introduction of the President's inline eight-cylinder engine in early 1928. The advent of the Indianapolis 500's 1930 rule changes opened the door for production-based entries, and the President's rugged eight powered a pair of private entries. These Studebaker-engined specials showed promise and led to the development of Studebaker's corporate team. This program will detail the origins and evolution of Studebaker-powered racers beginning in 1930 with a special emphasis on the company's factory-backed campaigns in 1932 and 1933. Additional focus will also be placed on the technical development of the Studebaker racers as well as the post-Studebaker disposition of the team cars and their present-day status. Sources include Studebaker's corporate archives and image collection at the Studebaker National Museum plus period publications and race accounts. Additional data is drawn from secondary sources profiling the Studebaker team plus owner research compiled during their stewardship of the cars. Andrew Beckman has been with the Studebaker National Museum since 1999 and currently serves as Archivist. He previously worked at the Sheboygan County Historical Society in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and the Wade House State Historic Site in Greenbush, Wisconsin. Mr. Beckman hails from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and holds a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay. In 2004, he completed the Modern Archives Institute at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. In 2009, he earned his mid-level certificate in Collections Preservation from the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies in Mount Carroll, Illinois. Mr. Beckman is the author of The Studebaker National Museum: Over a Century on Wheels, and Studebaker's Last Dance: The Avanti, and is a columnist for the Studebaker Drivers Club magazine, Turning Wheels. In addition to his duties at the Studebaker National Museum, Mr. Beckman is a member and Past President of the Society of Automotive Historians. He also serves as a commentator for The Henry Ford Museum's Motor Muster and Old Car Fest. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 Studebaker's Early Motorsports Involvement 01:27 Andrew Beckman's Background 02:51 Studebaker's Racing Philosophy 04:32 Studebaker's Early Racing History 09:50 The President 8 and Racing Innovations 13:19 Studebaker at the Indianapolis 500 17:00 The 1932 and 1933 Racing Campaigns 20:50 The Elusive Studebaker Straight 8 Block 21:01 Studebaker's Racing Legacy 22:29 The 1933 Indianapolis 500 23:14 Privateers and Unique Entries 25:14 Studebaker's Financial Struggles 25:30 The End of Factory-Backed Racing 26:16 Studebaker's Continued Influence 27:03 The Last of the Studebaker Racers 28:55 Restoration and Legacy 32:05 Q&A Session 35:54 Sponsors and Closing Remarks ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/gtmotorsports Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience.

How can sociology reclaim its commitment to rigorous inquiry and viewpoint diversity? Today, John Tomasi sits with Jukka Savolainen, Ph.D., Sociology professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and the moderator of the Heterodox Academy's Sociology community. They discuss the discipline's current challenges, including ideological bias and lack of viewpoint diversity, and explore potential paths toward reform.    Jukka shares his journey into sociology and his decision to leave Finland to pursue a PhD in the United States due to concerns about postmodernist influences in Finnish sociology. He addresses the core aims of sociology, its present state of fragmentation, and the impact of ideological bias on research and discourse. Jukka highlights the importance of empirical evidence and viewpoint diversity while pointing out taboos and restrictions on certain topics within the field. The conversation also examines the role of external interventions, using the example of the Danish government's restructuring of the sociology department at Copenhagen University in the 1980s, and the more recent actions by the state of Florida. In This Episode:

Recent advances in genetics and paleoanthropology are revealing a complex world where multiple hominin species coexisted, interbred, and left behind their DNA in modern populations. Fossils like the Denisovan jawbone Penghu-1 found in Taiwan and enigmatic remains from Red Deer Cave suggest that some archaic humans may have survived into the Holocene, much later than previously thought. Meanwhile, studies of modern genomes have uncovered “genetic ghosts”—traces of unknown ancient populations for which no physical remains have been found, particularly in Africa and Southeast Asia. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we look at these and other recent discoveries challenging our past thinking on ancient humans, which point to a tangled web of migrations and ancient interactions. We look at global folklore and indigenous traditions that describe reclusive, bipedal, humanlike creatures that bear striking similarities across cultures, which raise profound questions about how many kinds of humans once walked the Earth—and whether some still might. Seasoned JFK researchers who know the historic material will be able to make sense of the new JFK files. Len & Steve discuss the JFK Task Force headed by Congresswoman Anna Luna & the recent hearings. Steve finds Luna as being forthcoming & capable to the task of heading this new JFK task force. Steve is proud of his friendship with JFK researcher & author, Jefferson Morley, founder of JFK Facts website. Visit here. Oliver Stone will never be forgotten by the JFK researching community. His contributions have been priceless. The JFK movie by Oliver Stone was released in 1992, 2nd documentary Destiny Betrayed was 2021. Mr. X played by Donald Sutherland was based off the personal testimony of Col. L.Fletcher Prouty. It was beneficial to the research committee to have Oliver Stone at the first JFK hearing of the Luna Committee in Congress. They murdered JFK & got away with it, with Dulles guarding all information. Earl Warren and others never wanted to head the commission, they were ordered to by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steve discusses the importance of the cover up with Len mentioning CE #399 and that unbelievable lie. All of the new observations fail to produce any evidence of the government’s false claims that "Oswald did it". Steve met Mark Lane in 1966 shortly after the release of Rush To Judgment. Mark introduced Steve to Jim Garrison. Jim wanted to know if Steve had any skills when Steve offered to volunteer to help Jim with his JFK investigation. Steve had read all 26 volumes of Warren Commission testimony & exhibits, with experience in photography at UCLA. Overloaded with film & photographic evidence, Garrison hired Steve as a forensic investigator in charge of this material. Steve feels the biggest discovery from this photographic & video evidence is the Zapruder film! Garrison sent Steve to the National Archives to view the unedited version of the Zapruder film. It was shockingly clear. Steve was also communicating with a liason with French Intelligence SDECE & was sent to Paris in June of 1968. French Intelligence gave Steve a copy of their near perfect copy of the Zapruder film. Film was disguised for trip to USA. Steve made copies to anyone who wanted one, he sent many films to JFK assassination researchers. JFK couldn't have been shot from the front & the back, by anyone shooting from the 6th floor of the TSBD building. Len believes this week there will be a release of the assassination of Robert Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel. All photos related to the assassinations should be released for public scrutiny. These are MURDER investigations. What happened in Dealey Plaza was a highly conscious and intentional act to completely change the direction of history. Churchill called the people who really control global politics the "High Cabal". Stay tuned for a new release this fall by Steve Jaffe, he's been busy working on a new book! Stay tuned! Until you start doing the deep research, you truly have no idea have no idea of the many lies that are told by the government. JFK's assassination completely changed the course of history, We still feel these effects. Part Two Paul Bleau @ 31:45 "The JFK Assassination Chokeholds: That Prove There Was A Conspiracy". Website "The Pepe Letters" Read here. Len & Paul discuss the latest in Paul's research & the JFK document release. Paul has an interest in the Fair Play For Cuba Committee. When Oswald joined this committee, Lee was on a mission. New Orleans wouldn't have had any appetite for communist sympathy after the Cuban Missile Crisis in the summer of 1963. Despite the logical failure of such a committee, Lee opens up a public chapter of the FPFC in New Orleans. Creation of such a committee in NO could have caused Castro issues regarding trade ...

Len & Greg were both friends with whistleblower Col. L. Fletcher Prouty before he passed away. Len created the "50 Reasons For 50 Years" series for the 50th anniversary of JFK's murder & to counter Gary Mack's lies. Greg was interviewed on "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" over 22 years ago. Watch here. While "No Smoking Gun" has been the go to phrase of the media, Greg explains we've had "smoking guns" for decades. The "Silence of the Media" despite there being several smoking guns has lead to the delay in justice for JFK. Dr. David Mantik wrote an article "The Silence of the Historians" years ago. Read here. Greg encourages Congress to initiate another investigation into JFK's assassination & review all info learned. Over the decades the National Archives has fought to have documents to remain sealed & squash the investigators. CIA document #1035-960 went out to all of the station chiefs on how to handle the criticism of the Warren Report. We've had this document for decades, if it had been recently released, would the media consider this a "smoking gun"? The CIA tries to stifle thought, conversation & research into critical thinking citizens who investigate JFK's assassination. Western Cartridge Co. FBI doc. dated Dec 2/63, Subject: JFK assassination, written in response to Mr. Belmont's memo. This FBI memo is evidence of the bias investigation, wanting the ammo to be traced & put in Oswald's hands. Stalin's top man in the secret police, Beria, "you show me the man and I will find you the crime". Targeted lawfare. In the United States, you investigate the crime & see where it goes, not the other way around. Western Cartridge Co. in East Alton, Illinois manufactured 4,000,000 rounds for the USMC in 1954. Order was authorized under government contract DA-23-196-ORD-27. FBI memo states this is probably CIA connected. The interesting thing about this order is it's for ammo for weapons that the does not fit any weapon issued by the USMC. The FBI memo regarding the Mannlicher-Carcano cartridges was also shared with Division 5 & Division 6 of the FBI. The FBI is stating the ammo is 9 years old, purchased by the CIA, under the USMC cover. How did it end up in the TSDB? If this document had been released 2 weeks ago, would the media be saying that this is a "smoking gun"? View document. What if we'd not had the LBJ Tapes this whole time? Would these be considered a "smoking gun" by the media if just released? In a recording with Hoover & LBJ, LBJ asks Hoover how Connally was hit if Oswald was shooting from behind? How could Connally be shot if he was never between Jack & the TSBD building? Another "smoking gun". Hoover is basically saying Kennedy was shot from the front! Media remains silent. The media was AWARE of the lies, glossing over ALL of the "smoking guns", yet continues to make sensationalist stories. Greg doesn't have any high hopes over the release of the recent JFK files. The media has failed. The reason that we don't have all of the information should not be the government refused to release documents. Len mentions if the media reviewed the working file on George Joannides, it would be like hieroglyphics to the media. The media is failing! With shows like Joe Rogan & Black Op Radio, people do not believe the Warren Commission. With every release of documents, nothing is released that actually proves the case that...

Spy fiction has captivated our imagination for decades, but the truth behind Britain's security service is even more fascinating than the high-stakes capers of the movies. At The National Archives, we hold the real files—declassified documents that reveal the actual operations, successes, and sometimes failures of MI5 since its creation in 1909.  In celebration of our new exhibition featuring these secret files and spy gadgets, this episode delves into the real world of espionage – one perhaps more intriguing than fiction.  Our guests include Gill Bennett, a historian specialising in secret intelligence and former Chief Historian at the Foreign Office, and Mark Dunton, Principal Records Specialist at The National Archives.  Download the full episode transcript here.

Introducing ArchiveGate: Trump's Dangerous Attack on the National Archives

If you thought SignalGate was bad, wait until you hear about ArchiveGate. Trump illegally fired the National Archivist—the first president in U.S. history to do so since the position was established in the 1930s. This wasn't just about a change in leadership; it was revenge on the Archivist's office alerting the DOJ about Trump's stolen classified documents, which were stored around Mar-a-Lago, a known hub for foreign spies.  But it gets worse. Marco Rubio, who is currently the Trump/Putin lackey Secretary of State, is also serving as the acting National Archivist. This unprecedented conflict of interest raises serious concerns. Rubio is juggling three major roles—Secretary of State, head of USAID, and now, National Archivist. This gives him the power to greenlight the destruction of government records, including his own, without any checks and balances. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of our political system, overseeing the administration of the Electoral College, preserving government records, and ensuring transparency. Now, with Rubio in control, we face the potential destruction of key documents and rewriting of history that could threaten our democracy. It's another avenue for Trump to lead a coup to stay in power, like his failed “fake electors” scheme to try to overturn the 2020 election.  As one listener points out in her commentary, edited for clarity, shared in a recent Gaslit Nation salon, we must stay vigilant of these corrupt moves. ArchiveGate is part of a broader plan to hold on to power. But remember, the people are the ultimate force. Together, we can stop this.    Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? HOUR ONE: It is considered by many, Britain's most well-known disappearing person case. Even now, over three decades later, people in the UK are still fascinated and intrigued by the unexplained vanishing of Suzy Lamplugh. (The Suzy Lamplugh Mystery) *** John List planned the murders of his own family so carefully, he almost got away with it. In fact, it took 18 years to catch him. (The Family Man Who Murdered His Family) *** We'll look at what it was like to be a woman in the 17th Century… and accused of witchcraft. (Witchly Accusations) *** If you drink whiskey, or even if you don't, you're likely familiar with “Jameson Irish Whiskey.” But did you know that cannibalism played a part in its history? (Whiskey and Cannibalism) *** A strange phenomenon takes place in Arkansas, and despite the numerous sightings and investigations, there is still no explanation for it. (Unexplained In Arkansas)==========HOUR TWO: Seeing a lifelike human skeleton in a doctor's office, especially in the past couple of centuries, was – and in many cases still is - commonplace. But where did one go to get such lifelike skeletons if you were a doctor in the 1800s? Why, a skeleton factory, of course! (The Skeleton Factory) *** The story of Kate Watson is a grim one – living as a prostitute in the Old West, and when that wasn't enough she took up cattle rustling. Her husband wasn't any better. So it's probably no surprise that she was strung up until dead. But maybe you should wait to pass judgement until you hear the whole story. (The Lynching of Cattle Kate) *** In March of 2004, teenager Brianna Maitland left work in the late evening hours and was never seen again. To this day it is still one of Vermont's most infamous mysteries. (The Vanishing of Brianna Maitland) *** Plus, “The Haunted Adirondack Mountains”==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Parents always feel their child is special in some way – something that makes their child better in some way than other children. Parents of indigo children are no different, with some parents thinking their children have psychic abilities. Doctors say that these children have ADD or ADHD, but one parapsychologist says indigo children have something even more special – possibly even paranormal - inside them. (Supernatural Indigo Children) *** When you think of a mad scientist you most likely think of Victor Frankenstein – but it's rumored Mary Shelley took inspiration for the character from a real mad scientist by the name of Andrew Ure. (Andrew Ure: A Real Life Mad Scientist) *** The story of Kate Watson is a grim one – living as a prostitute in the Old West, and when that wasn't enough she took up cattle rustling. Her husband wasn't any better. So it's probably no surprise that she was strung up until dead. But maybe you should wait to pass judgement until you hear the whole story. Trump loves to complain about the deep state while Elon claims he's rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse with all his mass firings. But DOGE should be looking higher up the food chain to target the graft: for example, the South African immigrant whose car company would not have gotten off the ground without the taxpayer money he still collects. In contrast, government workers are mainly mission-driven and they're not in it for the money. Michael's new collection of essays takes a look at some of the characters who populate our federal workforce, including people performing small miracles without fame and glory. Plus, the risk of Trump politicizing economic data and his plan to destroy whatever trust people still have in the government. In this fiery episode, we turn the tables on the right-wing outrage machine by exploring what actual cancel culture looks like under the current administration. We dive into the Pentagon's removal of webpages about minorities who served in the military, including Ira Hayes, the Native American Marine who helped raise the flag at Iwo Jima.We play a game of "Do You Remember?" highlighting the hypocrisy of those who decried "cancel culture" just a few years ago but are now actively erasing history that doesn't fit their narrative. We examine the shocking DEI purges happening across government agencies, particularly in the National Archives and Department of Defense. From historical monuments to classic films and music, we explore what American culture would look like if we truly followed through on current efforts to erase "DEI" from our collective memory - everything from Johnny Cash's music to "To Kill a Mockingbird" would be on the chopping block. We connect contemporary deportation policies to Bush-era "black sites" and examine how the current administration learned its playbook from previous Republican administrations.Recorded March 20, 2025. Marie Stopes' “Mother's Clinic” opened its doors in Holloway, on March 17th, 1826. Stopes was a trailblazer, her birth control clinic providing working-class women with access to contraception and advice for the first time. However, her organisation's full name - "The Society for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress" - reveals her disturbing underlying belief in selective breeding for racial progress; a commitment that only strengthened as time went on, and she corresponded with Hitler. In this episode, The Retrospectors consider Stopes's pioneering work on female desire and sexual health in her bestselling book, "Married Love,"; explain how she pivoted from paleobotany to reproductive health and racism; and ask why Marie Stopes International waited until the 21st century to rebrand itself… Further Reading: • ‘Family planning in the 1920s: Marie Stopes and the ‘wise precaution of delay'' (The National Archives blog, 2022): https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20speople-family-planning-in-the-1920s-marie-stopes-and-the-wise-precaution-of-delay/ • ‘Marie Stopes: a turbo-Darwinist ranter, but right about birth control' (The Guardian, 2011): https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/2011/sep/02/marie-stopes-right-birth-control • ‘Marie Stopes' Eugenics, Feminism and Birth Control' (Wellcome Collection, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPqog-EV9jI This episode originally aired in 2024 Love the show? On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, despite all the lies and static about “the conservatives” on the present Supreme Court, who are actually originalists doing the job of real jurists, these activists are destroying and intending to destroy the judicial system, using it as a kind of politburo to impose their ideology from the bench. This is the real Constitutional crisis, not President Trump, Elon Musk, and others trying to re-establish separation of powers, representative government, limited central authority, etc. These entities have the temerity to claim Trump is a threat to Constitutional government as they usurp it and him. The truth is, Trump is a threat to them. No judge has the power to run the executive branch, especially when it comes to such basic executive functions as restructuring agencies, personnel matters like severance, temporary holds on spending to conduct reviews, access to agency information to conduct audits, etc. These judges have no power to substitute their personal and political preferences for that of an elected president. Later, if an executive department or an agency has discretion on how to spend funds or appropriations then it's clearly Constitutional for an elected President who oversees the agencies to do the same thing. We're told the only person in the executive branch who cannot participate in this process is the president. That's preposterous. How can it be a government employee in a back agency issue a grant to a left-wing group but the President can't alter those decisions? Afterward, Attorney for America First Legal, Michael Ding calls in to discuss new documents they obtained through an ongoing investigation into the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) confirming that the classified documents case against Trump was a sham prosecution that involved the Biden White House from the start. Finally, Professor Randy Barnett calls in to discuss his book, A Life for Liberty: The Making of an American Originalist. https://www.amazon.com/Life-Liberty-Making-American-Originalist/dp/1641773774/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.OnpUgGSoIebO7Y-HZhgGKg.VT37mlplLETuI_K9rfxvsOZGiskam8-1N_wtMwuE580&dib_tag=se&keywords=A+Life+for+Liberty%3A+The+Making+of+an+American+Originalist&qid=1739383661&sr=8-1 Learn more about your ad choices.
