What is humanity for? What happens if we rethink not just the way we plan buildings, but our entire role as beings on a living planet? These are the central questions driving Michael Pawlyn's third edition of the life-changing book, Biomimcry in Architecture. Michael Pawlyn is an architect, the founding director of Exploration Architecture Ltd and is a ground-breaking pioneer, not just of biomimicry as the design foundation of architecture and the built environment, but of the ways we might redesign humanity. Before setting up his own practice, Michael was central to the team that radically re-invented horticultural architecture for the Eden Project. In 2018 he jointly initiated Architects Declare a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency which has since spread to 28 countries with over 8,000 companies signed up to a declaration of action. In addition to his architectural work he advises companies and governments on how to make the shift from sustainable to regenerative design. He lectures widely and his and his TED talk has been viewed over 2 million times, which gives you a sense of the scale and scope of the possibilities he opens up. With Sarah Ichioka, he co-wrote the book 'Flourish' and we spoke to Sarah back in episode #147, but now Michael is back with the third edition of Biomimicry in Architecture, which came out on 1st September, and my goodness, this book has the capacity to change our world. If every key decision-maker on the planet had a copy of this book, and was given time to read it, our world would be a different place, because over and over again, Michael shows the ways that the natural world has designed things that are more efficient, stronger, more resilient than anything humanity has created - but that we can make things with them that the natural world has not imagined. More than anything this book re-iterates the fact that we are an integral part of the web of life and that by using our astonishing creativity, our capacity to see the design of an abalone shell, or the way a mussel roots in the seabed, or the ways palm leaves roll up in a hurricane or any of a thousand other almost-miraculous things—and then applying them in different contexts, we can create everything from surgical drills that can bend round corners to whole tidal lagoons that create and store power and offer whole new biomes. If we set the flourishing of all life as our goal, we can co-create miracles. As will be obvious in the conversation you're about to hear, this book lit up so many parts of my heart and my mind - there is so much we can do if we bring the best of ourselves to the table and Michael Pawlyn is one of those thought-leaders who has ranged right to the edge of what we know and what we can do and brought the results to the rest of us in a way that's intriguing, inspiring and invigorating. Whatever else you do this year, you need to read this book. Buy it, share it, tell your friends. This is how we change the world. So, with that endorsement ringing in your ears... The most unusual thing about today's story is that almost everyone is going to bruise their lungs. For your sake, I hope it's from laughing. Not everyone will be so lucky. On today's episode: you'll hear about the one part of your body I want you to consider more worthy of fiddling with than your genitals; if you're a stickler for building codes, we're going to take you on a beautiful, potentially one-way hike to see some shoddy-ass worksmanship; and we'll see what makes helicopter rescues as frightening as whatever you did to earn one in the first place. And if you were listening on Patreon… I would use tales of sharks and octopuses and meth and sex toys to try and make today's location more appealing; you would meet the surviving inductees to the No-Parachute Hall of Fame; and you would find out how the greatest construction disaster in US history inspired my idea for an OSHA Violation Ouija Board Game.In this episode, so you know, I was going to start by saying we have a story you're going to fall head over heels for, but that felt like the most unintentionally disrespectful thing I've ever said. I'm also going to teach you the reassuring paleontological roots of why you laugh at this show. It is my unique pleasure to be able to take us all back to Oceana on today's episode. I make a point about how little attention is paid to this part of the world outside of South East Asia. Actually, I make a few points about it, as I've done in the past as well. This is, sadly, one of those episodes were young people will die terribly, and frighteningly, but it's also one of those stories that offers two things. First, a silver lining and legacy of change and safety, sure – but second, a chance to really get your torches and knives out for a government that dropped a ball and then walked behind it kicking it the whole way. I know a lot of listeners get a kind of malicious satisfaction or bureaucraschadenfreude when people in positions of responsibility for our stories get their heads removed. You'll just have to wait and see. And because we're now into October and the Halloween Season, I will be creating a masterpiece of horror and gore for our next episode. This is one I originally started writing all the way back in 2016 (yes, it took four years to get this show rolling). I shelved it though. Too violent. Too many limbs. Well, five years in, you've all proven how hard it is to scare you off, so from the annals of history comes our most frightening episode ever. Maybe. It's relative I suppose. In this empowering episode of Healthy Waves, host Avik Chakraborty brings together two remarkable voices of transformation — Antoinette Lee, a U.S. Army veteran, author, and adventure sports influencer, and Trea (Asher) Drake, a Krav Maga black belt instructor, mindfulness coach, and breathwork expert. Together, they explore how breathing and meditation can unlock inner strength, emotional balance, and clarity in the most challenging times. From overcoming trauma and rebuilding life after brain and spine injury to using nature as medicine, this episode dives deep into the science and soul of resilience. Listeners will discover: How to use breathwork and mindfulness to manage your nervous system and emotions Why time in nature is more than therapy — it's a biological necessity What it means to consciously create your “new normal” after crisis And how calmness, courage, and intention can co-exist even in moments of chaos. If you're seeking inspiration to start again, heal deeply, or find peace through stillness, this episode will remind you that flourishing isn't about perfection — it's about presence and choice. About the Guests : Antoinette Lee:A decorated U.S. Army veteran, former tech CEO, and survivor of a traumatic brain and spine injury, Antoinette's journey from the brink of death to becoming a motivational speaker and outdoor adventure athlete is awe-inspiring. As the author of Four Hours to Live and founder of New Normal Big Life (NNBL.blog), she empowers others to redefine their limits and create a fulfilling “new normal.” Trea (Asher) Drake:With a Master's in Education and nearly two decades in behavioral analysis, Trea has dedicated his life to helping others master resilience through martial arts, breathwork, and mindfulness. As a certified Krav Maga black belt, meditation trainer, and expert in intentional communication, he teaches how to rewire the nervous system for calm strength and conscious living. Key Takeaways : Conscious breathing isn't just survival — it's the remote control of your brain and body. Healing begins when you stop asking “Why me?” and start asking “What's next?” The nervous system is the gateway to resilience — mastering your breath helps regulate emotions and decisions. Nature's “medicine” (like phytoncides from trees) reduces stress, boosts immunity, and improves sleep. True mindfulness happens in daily life — five mindful seconds a hundred times a day creates transformation. When overwhelmed, ask: “What am I afraid of?” or “What can I control?” to return to center. Healing isn't passive; it's intentional courage — choosing calm, breath, and small daily steps forward. Outdoor adventures and nature immersion restore emotional clarity, courage, and spiritual connection. Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas
Certain features of our universe seem unnatural to us. These include "constants of nature" such as the cosmological constant and the mass of the Higgs boson, as well as features of the initial conditions like the curvature of space and the initial entropy. But they can't truly be "unnatural" -- they are literally features of Nature itself. Some have turned to the anthropic principle and the multiverse, while others look to theism for an explanation. I talk here about my views on the various attitudes one might take toward these apparent fine-tunings, and why it is important to think about them.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/10/06/331-solo-fine-tuning-god-and-the-multiverse/Support Mindscape on Patreon. Some readings of relevance:Livio and Rees, Fine-Tuning, Complexity, and Life in the MultiverseCarroll, In What Sense Is the Early Universe Fine-Tuned?Barnes, A Reasonable Little Question: A Formulation of the Fine-Tuning ArgumentGoff, Our Improbable Existence Is No Evidence for a MultiverseNeal, Puzzles of Anthropic Reasoning Resolved Using Full Non-indexical ConditioningSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The human tendency to solve problems by adding something is called "additive solution bias." However, sometimes a problem is more quickly and effectively solved by taking something away. In this episode we talk about how "additive solution bias" can play out in our parenting strategies, and how we can become more aware of the times when what we actually need to do is take something away. Amy and Margaret discuss: Why our brains are wired to solve problems by adding things How additive solution bias increases along with the size of the problem we're attempting to solve Why removing something, or doing less, isn't automatically easier Sign up for What Fresh Hell Plus on Supporting Cast to get all episodes ad-free, plus monthly bonus episodes. SummaryIn this conversation, Benjamin Lee discusses the contrast between trusting in the universe and trusting in God. He emphasizes that the universe is a created entity and cannot provide guidance, salvation, or answers to life's questions. Instead, he argues that God is the true source of life, truth, and blessings. Benjamin warns against modern idolatry, where people worship the creation rather than the Creator, and encourages listeners to seek a personal relationship with God.TakeawaysThe universe is a created entity, not the Creator.Trusting in the universe leads to disappointment.God is the source of life and truth. The universe cannot provide guidance or answers.Worshiping the universe is a form of idolatry.God desires a personal relationship with us.Redemption is found only in Jesus Christ.Every good gift comes from God, not the universe. The universe is silent; God communicates with us.The truth of God will always prevail over lies.Chapters00:00 The Universe vs. The Creator04:04 The Nature of Creation09:01 The Silence of the Universe11:51 God's Communication with Humanity16:07 The Power of God vs. The Universe19:48 The Fallacy of Trusting the Universe23:36 The Call to Trust in Godwww.icandopodcast.com
What if generosity isn't something we have to teach or force — but something we're born with? In this special episode honoring the birthday of Marshall Rosenberg, the founder of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), I share a personal story about my 5-year-old daughter — and how her spontaneous, joyful act of giving reminded me of one of Marshall's most powerful teachings: “What I want in my life is compassion — a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.” We'll explore: Why generous giving flows naturally when we feel connected and free How this principle applies not just to parenting, but to romantic relationships What gets in the way of that generosity in couples — and how NVC can help restore it A simple question to reflect on in your own relationship today Plus, I'll share how you and your partner can go deeper with NVC through my 9-Week Private Coaching Program for Couples: Stop Fighting (without stuffing your feelings or sacrificing your needs) If you're longing for more joy and spontaneous generosity in your relationship — this one's for you. I've shared these ideas across 100+ episodes, but I wanted them all in one place. These are the concepts that make Connect Method Parenting different, the foundation of everything we do inside League and what I teach on this podcast.I'm going through them fairly quickly in this episode, so if you want to go deeper on any of these, search the podcast or come ask me inside League during office hours. In this episode:Connection is your most powerful tool (and your child's most essential need)Why life is designed to be 50% amazing and 50% terrible, and why accepting this changes everythingIt only takes one person to improve a relationship, and that person is youYour brain will ruin your life if you don't supervise it (primitive brain vs. higher brain)Emotional maturity is spontaneous but not inevitable, here's how to create the conditions for itWhat you want matters more than other people's expectations of youHow you think about yourself literally creates the quality of your lifeEveryone is doing the best they can in the moment (yes, even when they ate the brownies)Nature knows what it's doing, trust the timingYour emotions come from your thoughts (not from your kids' behavior)A few things I mention:The baby powder blizzard of 2007 (my origin story)Hiking Machu Picchu with my daughter having a meltdownDr. Gordon Neufeld's work on attachment and emotional maturationThe Daily Peace process we do inside LeagueThe "More emotion, less feeling" conceptWant to go deeper? These ideas are just the beginning.

Join us in "streaming" this conversation with Alicia Marrs, Director of Western Water for the National Wildlife Federation. You'll learn about Low Tech Process Based Restoration (LTPBR), which is a very practical, hands-on technique for improving degraded watersheds using natural materials to slow the flow of water. LTPBR helps restore habitats by reducing erosion, increasing infiltration, and restoring natural wetland functions. A bonus of this conservation strategy is that it can actively involve volunteers, including kids and families, in the installation of these LTPBR structures. The gang discusses two papers that provide nuanced information to test when key innovations in vertebrate evolution occurred. The first paper looks at unique semi-terrestrial trace fossils in the early Devonian in order to determine the trace maker, and the second paper looks at fossils that could provide information about the origins of teeth. Meanwhile, Curt has theme park ambitions, James provides Amanda with new anxieties, and Amanda leaves it all to chance. Up-Goer Five (James Edition): The group talk about two papers that are looking at the earliest time things have been seen in the rocks. The first paper looks at some tracks in the rock left by animals with no legs that live in the water but can gasp air. We have looked at tracks from the same place before where the animals stuck their faces into the ground. The new tracks come in two forms. The first is where the animal took a rest and its bits that it uses to move in the water stuck in the ground. The other track is where it had to come out of the water and moved around on land. It used its head to pull it along as it moved. The track made by this is the same as tracks made by the same type of animal that still lives today. This is the oldest case of this type of animal moving on land and shows that animals with hard parts inside them began to move onto land in lots of different ways. The other paper looks at the supposed earliest time we find teeth growing on skin. This is interesting because there are several ideas about why the teeth began to grow on the skin, so when it first started could help tell which of these reasons is true. The skin teeth bit has been considered the same as an animal with no legs that lived in the water that was found in younger rocks from a different place, but when studied up close it does not look like the thing it is named as. By using lights to look inside the rock and seeing whether it looks the same as skin teeth on living animals it is shown that the old skin teeth are not skin teeth at all but actually are parts of the skin of a different animal with no hard parts inside that has legs that move in many places. In this 50-minute podcast, we talk polar bears, wolves, women, climate activists, and Denali wolf advocacy, through the tales of award-winning nature writer Marybeth Holleman whose new book is the eco-climate fiction novel “Bloom Again” a tale of two women in midlife -- estranged childhood friends -- Astrid a paleo-botanist in Raleigh, North Carolina at UNC and Elyse, a painter in Anchorage, Alaska, who both eventually reunite while experiencing major life changes, in their attempts to mitigate the climate crisis and take some risks in their careers, and through them we realize the road to climate solutions relies on a marriage of art and science. Polar bears play a central role in the plot of Bloom Again (Marybeth and I read some book passages on a polar bear, Binky, in the Anchorage zoo). I really enjoyed reading Bloom Again, as I liked how the narrative pivoted back and forth between Astrid's dramas in NC and India and then Elyse's dramas in Alaska and Siberia, but with some connections between the two women and their friends and the shared environmental crisis we all face. In this show recorded in October 2025, I also talk to Marybeth about an important 2013 nonfiction book of hers called “Among Wolves,” co-authored with the late Denali National Park wolf researcher and staunch wolf advocate Gordon Haber, who tragically died when his small research plane crashed when he was out monitoring the wolves in the park in 2009. Marybeth co-authored the Among Wolves book with Gordon after his death, using his field notes and telling his passionate story with Alaska's wolves, and their dramas, family joys, as well as their abuse at the hands of some brutal human hunters and trappers. Gordon provides solutions for fairer, smarter, and more humane wolf policies (as individuals not "packs" of interchangeable wolves). Both books, Bloom Again, and Among Wolves, will affect you deeply. They are published by University of Alaska Press, as Marybeth resides in Anchorage, Alaska. Her website that links to all her writing is https://www.marybethholleman.com/ "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly hour-long radio show airing Wednesdays at 6pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station) hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or friend Melody Paris. What if unlocking their secrets could help us extend human lifespans? Research into nature's most resilient species is already pointing the way. Joining me is Steven Austad, Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and author of Methuselah's Zoo: What Nature Can Teach Us about Living Longer, Healthier Lives (https://amzn.to/3Q5Zj8L). He reveals what the natural world is teaching us about living not just longer, but better. Why do some people come to believe things that simply aren't true? From flat-earth theories to dangerous conspiracy thinking, misbelief is everywhere — and it can have serious consequences. Dan Ariely, professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University, knows this topic intimately. He's the author of Misbelief: What Makes Rational People Believe Irrational Things (https://amzn.to/3ZNNOpB), and he shares both the science and his personal story of being the target of misbelief. This conversation might change how you view false beliefs — and those who hold them. And finally today, tossing out your empty prescription bottles might seem harmless — but it could expose you to risks you never considered. We were finally able to schedule a taping with enough lead time to get a special guest we've been wanting to have on for a long time—the great Hadley Arkes, emertus professor of jurisprudence from Amherst College and founder of the James Wilson Institute on Natural Rights and the American Founding, and co-host of his own very fine podcast, the Natural Law Moment. We've abused Hadley in absentia in some of our podcasts over the last few months, so now he got hsi chance especially to attempt to sort out the very stubborn John Yoo. John was delayed a bit joining us, so since this podcast is partly anchored not only in the truths of natural law, but also libations of a scotch variety, we decided to take advantage of Hadley's advanced expertise in gin martinis. Plus some "origin story" of how he came to political philosophy and in particular natural law as the primary focus of his mature work. And once John showed up, it was ON! We rounded off this episode with an AI-generated parody of Hadley, which begins as follows:“On the Ontological Status of the Ham Sandwich: A Moral Inquiry into the Lunchtime Crisis”By Gladly Harkness, Edward Whiskers Professor of Ontological JurisprudenceIt is a curious feature of our current jurisprudence that the simple act of consuming a ham sandwich has not yet been subject to rigorous philosophical analysis. . .For the whole thing, you'll need to head over to Steve's "Political Questions" Substack.

Today, Sean and Sarah welcome Author, YouTuber, Journalist, Speaker, Podcaster, Film Critic and Baptist Minister, Peter Laws to discuss his upcoming book 'The Frighteners: Why We Love Monsters, Ghosts, Death and Gore'. The book will be published on 9th October 2025. 'The Frighteners' finds Peter on a paranormal pilgrimage to seek out what is it that draws people to both the dark and macabre, but also to the light and faith. With a healthy dose of dark-humour including threatening a zombie in a wheelchair with a shotgun, enticing a werewolf with peppered steaks from a Sainsbury's Local, to a festival which Peter described as a sort-of meta-physical Come Dine With Me, this thought-provoking book is one not to be missed. When I say thought-provoking, mainly death if we're honest but we'll get into that.As the book blurb proclaims: 'Grab your crucifixes, pack the silver bullets, and join the Sinister Minister on his romp into our morbid curiosities!'Sean, Sarah and Peter share their own ghost 'experiences'.Guest Links:-Peter Laws Website: https://www.peterlaws.co.uk/-Into The Fog with Peter Laws: https://www.youtube.com/@IntoTheFog-Creepy Cove Community Church Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3238cjOfCXGgXHI3SKI4ka-Uncanny: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0010x7cAcknowledgments: Thank You To Peter, Elle-Jay from Icon Books and Paul Bavill from the 'History Rage' podcast.Chapters:0:08 Welcome to Review It Yourself1:06 Literary Exploration of the Macabre2:25 Introducing Pleasure a.k.a. Why are horses so big? Why do horses have tails and manes? How do their legs move? Are their bones in their hooves? What do they eat and how do they run and jump? We tackle those questions and more in this episode all about horses. We'll also learn a little bit more about the unique horses in Iceland, where there's a strict ban on horses coming in from other countries. But Why visited riding instructor Sonja Noack at Hestasnild, a riding school in Iceland, to get answers to all your equine questions.Download our learning guides: PDF | Google Slide | Transcript
Remembering Jane: a conversation with Jane Goodall on her storied careerScience lost a unique pioneering figure this week. Jane Goodall — primatologist, conservationist and activist — died at the age of 91. In 2002, she visited the Quirks & Quarks studio to talk with Bob McDonald ahead of the Canadian launch of her IMAX film Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees. Bob and Jane spoke about how a girl growing up in urban England developed a love for animals, why scientists critical of her work were wrong, and how she was able to get close to the wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park. Scientists can predict what colour a person is looking at based on brain activityScientists can predict what colour a person is looking at based on brain activityDo you see what I see? New research says you do. Using brain imaging technology, scientists were able to predict what colour a person was looking at by reading their brain activity. This suggests that everyone responds essentially the same way to certain colours. Michael Bannert, a postdoctoral student at Tuebingen University in Germany, led the research published in the Journal of Neuroscience.A Mars rover spots strong evidence of ancient life on the red planetEarlier this month, NASA revealed that their Perseverance rover gathered what could be the strongest evidence yet that life may have existed on Mars. Using the rover's scientific instruments, scientists identified two minerals in an ancient river that they say are most often found as a result of microbial life here on Earth. They also set aside a sample for a future return mission. Joel Hurowitz, a geologist at Stony Brook University, says he can't wait to get the sample back to Earth to find out if it truly is a sign of life. It was published in the journal Nature.Life at the limits: searching for 'Intraterrestrial' life deep within the Earth's crustA new book explores the latest research into the search for life deep inside the Earth, where the sun doesn't shine and oxygen doesn't reach. Scientists travel to some of the most geologically dangerous regions of our planet to understand how life forms in extreme environments, and answer deep questions like the origin of life on Earth and what life might be like off of our planet. Karen Lloyd, a subsurface biogeochemist from the University of Southern California, is the author of Intraterrestrials: Discovering the Strangest Life On Earth.
Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist, conservationist, and humanitarian, died on October 1 at the age of 91. Goodall was born in London in 1934, and her curiosity about the natural world led her to the forests of Gombe, Tanzania, where she made groundbreaking observations of chimpanzee behavior, including tool use. Her research challenged the accepted scientific perceptions of our closest relatives.Host Ira Flatow shares his memories of Dr. Goodall, including an interview from 2002 in which she discussed her life and work.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
