Epiphytes of one kind or another are ubiquitous components of ecosystems around the globe, but we still know little about what they are doing up in the forest canopy. For instance, how do epiphytes influence the water cycle of various ecosystems? Figuring out how epiphytes interact with the water cycle can help us refine models of drought, climate change, and so much more. Joining us to talk about this is Dr. John Van Stan who you may remember from Episode 457 of the In Defense of Plants Podcast. He and his colleagues are working on refining the concept of the "Epiphyte Area Index" that will help us better understand a model vital ecosystem processes such as hydrology. On a cool, humid summer morning from her screened porch, Mary Stone reflects on the richness of slowing down. From a modest vegetable harvest and the gift of one perfectly ripe cherry tomato to birdwatching, fledgling birds, wandering goats, and the hidden life beneath our gardens, she discovers that doing nothing is often far from doing nothing at all.Join Mary as she explores gratitude, presence, the wisdom found in simply noticing, and the many ways nature and gardens continue to nurture us—even when they don't produce as we'd hoped. In this episode:Why a tiny garden harvest brought unexpected joyThe hidden purpose of voles and poison ivyBirdwatching as a practice of presenceDennis Briede's inspiring "sit" traditionGarlic scapes, beet greens, and a little garden humorWhat nature and gardens teach us about patience, hope, and letting life unfoldSometimes the greatest discoveries aren't found by doing more, but by slowing down long enough to notice what nature has been offering all along.

This is episode 5 of a six-part series on food imperialism. Welcome to Edible Empire, a podcast by Planet Pulse Pacific about the hidden cost of our food.Beyond recipes lies a story of power. From colonial plantations to modern agribusiness, this podcast reveals how the pursuit of food has redrawn maps, exploited people, and still shapes who holds control today. This episode explores how New Zealand's dairy industry links local landscapes to global extraction, ecological harm, and the wider machinery of food imperialism.New Zealand's image of clean, green pastures hides one of the world's most intensive dairy industries. Behind each glass of milk there is a hidden web of global extraction: phosphate mined from occupied Western Sahara, palm kernel imported from deforested Southeast Asia, and polluted rivers flowing through Māori ancestral lands. This episode traces how New Zealand's dairy boom reshapes both local ecosystems and distant economies, from illegally occupied territories in West Africa to political power in New Zealand. Through the story of “white gold”, we uncover how even the purest landscapes are bound into the machinery of food imperialism. Here, we discuss the environmentally destructive and geopolitically fraught supply chains connecting intensive dairy production in Aotearoa New Zealand with phosphate mining in the illegally occupied territory of Western Sahara. Our three expert guests detail how New Zealand's export-driven commodity model creates intense global market pressures for corporate profit and high-yield volume. Freshwater ecologist Dr Mike Joy exposes the catastrophic local consequences of this system, explaining how excessive synthetic nitrogen and fertiliser inputs poison rivers, disrupt aquatic ecosystems, and contaminate drinking water. Geographer Dr Milena Bojovic unpacks the structural traps forcing farmers into continual intensification, which in turn fuels a dependency on rare, internationally contested mineral resources. Finally, researcher and artist Dr Crystall Bennes traces the physical journey of this phosphate rock, revealing how Western agricultural high yields rely heavily on wealth extracted under colonial conditions from the Boo Cra mine, highlighting the profound human and environmental costs borne by displaced Sahrawi populations.Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out on the next episode!Resources from this episode:https://ojs.victoria.ac.nz/pq/article/view/9629/8507https://people.wgtn.ac.nz/mike.joy https://www.gofundme.com/f/almasar-library-education-centre-for-children-and-women https://wsrw.org/en https://www.crystalbennes.com/ To view all the links to the websites and documents, visit the show notes on our website. Please support our work and enable us to deliver more content by buying us a coffee or becoming a member of Athletes for Nature.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, subscribe to this podcast, and share this episode with your friends and family.

Have you ever met someone named Lucy and thought, "She really looks like a Lucy"? As strange as it sounds, scientists have discovered there may be more truth to that feeling than you realize. Your name may actually influence the way you look—or at least the way other people see you. Listen as I explain this fascinating research and what it reveals about the surprising connection between names and faces.https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2405334121 We all give away far more than we think. Tiny facial expressions, subtle gestures, the way we sit, stand, or even touch our face can reveal confidence, nervousness, deception, attraction, and much more. Once you know what to look for, it's almost impossible not to notice these hidden signals. Joining me is Peter Collett, a social psychologist who taught at Oxford University and is internationally recognized for his expertise in human behavior and nonverbal communication. He is author of How To Tell What People Are Thinking From the Bedroom to the Boardroom (https://amzn.to/3WVytDM). This conversation is packed with practical insights that can help you read people more accurately in everyday life. What is the brightest thing in the universe? The stickiest substance? The loudest sound? The coldest place? The fastest, slowest, biggest and smallest things imaginable? Nature has some astonishing record holders—and many of them are far stranger than fiction. David Darling, science writer, astronomer, and author of nearly 50 books, including Ka-boom!: The Science of Extremes (https://amzn.to/3X5gTgJ), takes us on a tour of the most incredible extremes in science, nature, and the universe. You'll come away with a collection of facts you'll be repeating to people for weeks. Why does food often seem to taste better after a simple ritual—like singing "Happy Birthday" before eating cake? It turns out the ritual itself may be changing your experience in ways you never realized. Listen as I explain the surprising psychology behind this effect and why small rituals can make everything from meals to everyday experiences more enjoyable.https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/releases/to-savor-the-flavor-perform-a-short-ritual-first.html PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS WAYFAIR: Ready to upgrade your home for way less? In this week's episode we explore if there is any truth behind the well loved, pop-psychology meme going around the internet the last few years detailing THE SILENT WAR; a covert struggle for the mind's of the masses between a decentralized group of marginalized schizo-autists and a loosely affiliated cadre of enfranchised psychopathic elites: or more simply, the secret war between the schizos and the psychos - a theory that proponents claim is as old as time and offers us a new perspective on the dynamics between the hidden genius of charismatic predators who run things from the shadows and the weirdos like us who happen to notice them but can't seem to get normal people to listen until it's too late. In the extended show we go into even deeper detail on how psychopaths manipulate the herd and some examples of exactly how it works all the way from the geopolitical stage to the work place. Work on the “schizoide Alkoholiker” (schizoid alcoholic) personality type, circa World War I period. Swiss psychiatrist; describes a constitutional style of intense inner experience, social withdrawal, and emotional distance that sits on the milder end of what later became the schizophrenia-spectrum / schizoid personality continuum. The script treats this as an early clinical analogue of the meme's “schizo.”Kahlbaum, Karl Ludwig. Description of heboidophrenia (1890s). Condition emerging in adolescence/young adulthood that primarily disturbs personality, drive, mood, and social behaviour rather than intelligence; can present with antisocial, irritable, or “psychopathic”-appearing traits that are secondary to an underlying schizophrenic process. The script uses this to illustrate clinical blending of the two poles.Literary ParallelDick, Philip K. Ubik (1969). Three-class division of humanity (normies / psychics / inertials) mapped by the script onto the Silent War triad (normies / psychopaths / schizo-autists). Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1972). Introduction of “schizoanalysis”; desire as productive, machine-like, deterritorializing force that capitalism both unleashes and reterritorializes under profit axioms. Political Ponerology: A Science on the Nature of Evil Adjusted for Political Purposes (English editions mid-2000s; written earlier under surveillance). Central claim that pathocracy arises when a small minority with personality disorders (especially primary psychopathy, plus certain schizoid and “characteropathic” configurations) attain critical institutional influence and select for their own kind. We all see toadstools and mushrooms and fungi in autumn and winter (and beyond). It was just six weeks ago that we trumpeted the amazing contestants for the “Fungus of the Year”. But gardeners, nature nerds, and kids often find these wonderfully weirdly shaped miniature soccer balls lying on the forest floor – white with light-brown slimy structures. Basket fungi are large spherical structures that carry the spores of the fungus: it's that brown smudgy stuff on the white, rubbery polygons. Those spores smell quite putrid (try them!) and attract all kinds of flies that lap up the moisture – it's probably full of proteins and nutrients! Spores stick to their feet, and as they land in the forest on some organic debris, the fungal spores are distributed – repeating the cycle. When you see a very juvenile version (they look like creamy-white eggs, sticking half out of the ground) just grab one and cut it open! It's remarkable how the basket fungus is totally compressed, ready to hatch inside that “egg”. Main points of the story… What can we learn from this fungus? They recycle stuff – there is no waste in nature. The various flies and other insects spread the spores throughout the forest – I reckon those brown/creamy patches attract those flies. If you have some patience, you can see the flies “licking” the yummy spores up before flying away to other parts of the forest floor. I remember my Jack Russell used to find the smelly deposit and licked it himself! Nature cooperates… everybody wins in the arrangement. Nature communicates with chemical clues – the smell of the spores attracts the vectors. Want to know how to economize on transport cost by reducing the size of packages? Have a look at the basket fungus! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

All Learning Reimagined with Teresa Songbird Episode 9 of series on Embodied Intelligence Future Learner The Future Learner: Cultivating Human Intelligence in a Changing World Summary Learning for an Emerging World In the final installment of the nine-part Embodied Intelligence series, Teresa asks what kind of learner - and what kind of human - an increasingly technological and uncertain future will require. She imagines today's children navigating artificial intelligence, virtual reality, regenerative communities, ocean exploration, and possible travel beyond Earth. Rather than centering the episode on technology itself, she brings the discussion back to human development. She argues that learning belongs to people of every age and should remain rooted in wonder, reflection, and curiosity. The central question is not only what future learners will know, but how they will learn and who they will become. Timeless Capacities for Rapid Change Teresa identifies curiosity, adaptability, discernment, self-awareness, creativity, connection, and communication as essential qualities for the future learner. She describes communication as broader than speech, including writing, singing, body language, and other forms of perception. Reviewing the full series, she connects these qualities to awareness, safety, connection, memory, presence, expansion, identity, and wisdom. She emphasizes that attention is a superpower and that growth depends on feeling safe enough to expand rather than contract. Ancient wisdom, in her view, remains relevant and should not be discarded simply because it is old. From Information Access to Discernment The episode contrasts today's information-rich world with an educational model developed when information was scarce, knowledge was centralized, conformity was rewarded, and careers were predictable. Teresa argues that the modern challenge is no longer access but discernment: deciding what is useful, relevant, truthful, or manipulative. She warns that repetition across social and conventional media does not automatically make a message true and encourages listeners to pause before making decisions. Her approach includes consulting bodily responses, seeking additional information, cross-referencing sources, and going beyond a simple search-engine result. She criticizes educational environments that discourage questioning and calls for richer discussions in which learners can safely examine authority and competing claims. Becoming More Deeply Human Although technology can process information quickly and support many activities, Teresa maintains that human intelligence still includes wisdom, ethics, relationships, imagination, compassion, creativity, and embodied experience. She presents attention and energy as precious resources that can be directed toward nurturing people, communities, and living systems. The future learner, she suggests, will need a blend of intellectual, embodied, emotional, relational, ecological, and creative intelligences. Nature provides a model because rivers, trees, and ecosystems continually adapt to changing conditions. In this view, responsiveness, flexibility, and the ability to evolve are not merely job skills; they are expressions of being alive. Conditions Where Learners Flourish Teresa compares a learner to a seed that needs the right conditions in order to grow. She asks listeners to identify the environments in which they thrive, contract, feel stressed, or become fully alive. Connection, nourishment, rest, movement, purpose, challenge, contribution, belonging, curiosity, wonder, and joy are among the conditions she highlights. She also stresses self-knowledge, communication, and boundaries because different learners respond differently to pressure, time, space, and structure. Creating conditions in which life can flourish becomes, in her formulation, a central part of learning itself. Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Innovation The episode closes by envisioning future learners as bridge builders who can connect science with wisdom, technology with humanity, innovation with nature, information with discernment, individuality with community, and local life with global exploration. Teresa emphasizes that learning happens far beyond school - in kitchens, farms, travel, conversation, mistakes, nature, service, community, and everyday life. She offers a daily micro-practice centered on asking, "What did I learn today?" rather than focusing only on achievement and completion. She also leads an embodied affirmation about remaining open to growth, wisdom, possibility, and evolution. The series concludes with an invitation to live learning, carry wonder forward, and become more deeply human while navigating change.

Today I am interviewing Bruce Friedrich, the author of the newly published book "Meat: How the Next Agricultural Revolution Will Transform Humanity's Favorite Food―and Our Future." Bruce Friedrich is the president and founder of the Good Food Institute, one of the leading think tanks working to make the global food system better for the planet, people, and animals. As an international network of organizations, they advance alternative proteins to help meet climate, global health, food security, and biodiversity goals. Bruce Friedrich serves as GFI's chief thought leader and relationship-builder, working in close partnership with GFI's global teams and food system stakeholders around the world. Before founding the Good Food Instiute, he served as Director of Policy for four years at Farm Sanctuary. Prior to that, he worked at PETA for 15 years as Head of Public Campaigns, leading many of the organization's highest-profile and most memorable campaigns. Bruce has penned op-eds for the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, Nature Food, Wired, and many other publications. He has represented GFI on the Ezra Klein Show, Making Sense (Sam Harris), TED Radio Hour, New Yorker Radio Hour, PBS News Hour, and a variety of other podcasts and TV programs. Nearly seven kilometers beneath the Indian Ocean, a team of scientists went looking for hydrothermal vents — and found something else entirely. What they mistook, at first glance, for smoking chimneys turned out to be whale skulls: the opening of a necropolis stretching 1,200 kilometers across the sea floor, holding nearly 500 fossilized whales alongside active whale falls still teeming with life. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Xikun Song of the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the researchers behind this landmark discovery, newly published in Nature. Dr. Song walks us through the moment of realization on the submersible monitors, the physiology that may be driving deep-diving beaked whales to their limits, and why this site could rewrite what we know about whale evolution over the past 5.3 million years — with remains that may number in the millions, and roughly 6.7 million tons of sequestered carbon locked into the sea floor. He also shares the story in his own words — in Mandarin, with translation — describing the exact moment his team realized they'd found something extraordinary. Is there hope when hope for the hopeless? When life fractured in ways she could notintellectually solve, Dr. Sharnael — naturopathic physician and consciousnessteacher — was called beyond logic, beyond theology, beyond science — intodirect encounter. Enter Iboga. Often referred to as “Grandfather Iboga” and known asthe “Mount Everest of plant medicines,” this“The Truth Hunter,” African root functions as a powerful neurological andpsychological interrupter, disrupting entrenched patterns of illusion, compulsion, and genetic survival programming. In this deeply personal journey, Dr. Sharnael shareshow one of the most intense and misunderstood plant medicines on earth became amirror — illuminating unresolved grief and the unconscious patterns shapingidentity, while guiding her from darkness and sorrow into renewed hope, courage, love, and joy. At a time when suicide rates remain high and opioidaddiction devastates families worldwide, Iboga has drawn attention for itsunique interaction with opioid receptors and its growing exploration inaddiction recovery research. It is also being studied for its potential relevance indepression, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's,Parkinson's disease, Lyme-related neurological complications, and other complexnervous system disorders. Traditionally, the root bark has also been examinedfor antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. Part personal journey, part clinical guide, GrandfatherIboga serves readers seeking Truth, transformation, and understanding. Written by a doctor who became the patient, this bookis for anyone navigating loss, addiction, neurological complexity, and foranyone seeking Divine Truth where conventional paths have fallen short I almost didn't write these books. It would have beeneasier to stay quiet. Easier not to speak publicly about grief. Trauma. Plantmedicine. Consciousness. Easier to protect my reputation than enterconversations that are complex, controversial, and often misunderstood. But silence felt dishonest. And some stories are meant to be told. Today, I am honored to officially announce the releaseof two deeply personal and professional works: The Science of Miracles Workbook and Grandfather Iboga – A Personal Journey Through Grief,Trauma Healing, and Soul Transformation These are not just books. They are lived experience. Together, these two books represent the bridge I havealways stood on — science and spirit, clinical understanding and consciousness, measurable biology and Divine design. Anxiety can feel overwhelming, but when we understand what is really underneath it, we can begin to take our power back. In this episode, I'm talking about how to end anxiety and become empowered. In The Adult Chair®, I define anxiety as the physical manifestation of unfelt emotions. Anxiety often shows up in the body through symptoms like shortness of breath, tightness in the throat, knots in the stomach, racing thoughts, or a rattled nervous system. But underneath those physical symptoms, there are usually emotions that need our attention. When we are anxious, the ego often tells us to do more, fix more, think more, or keep pushing. But that only keeps us on the treadmill. The way out is to slow down, turn inward, and begin noticing what is happening emotionally and physically inside of us. I walk you through two simple steps and five tools to help calm anxiety and bring you back into your Adult Chair®. These tools include mindfulness, deep belly breathing, time in nature, meditation, and journaling. Each one helps regulate the nervous system, move emotions through the body, and reconnect you with your power. Key Takeaways In The Adult Chair®, anxiety is defined as the physical manifestation of unfelt emotions Anxiety often shows up through physical symptoms in the body Thoughts can direct us into the past or future, which can create emotions that rattle the nervous system Becoming aware of what anxiety really is helps us step back into our power Feeling emotions is one of the most important steps in calming anxiety The ego often tells us to do more, but the real healing begins when we slow down Mindfulness helps bring us into the present moment and back into the Adult Chair Slow belly breathing helps regulate the nervous system and activate the parasympathetic nervous system Nature can help calm the body, mind, and energy field Meditation teaches us to observe thoughts without reacting to them Journaling helps move stuck thoughts and emotions out of the body and onto paper Taking action is what helps us feel empowered MORE MICHELLE CHALFANT Website: https://www.michellechalfant.com Membership: The Adult Chair® Collective https://www.michellechalfant.com/collective  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

In this episode, we speak with Andrea Brand, Chair of the Department of Cell Biology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Director of the Regenerative Medicine Institute. We discuss her scientific path from yeast gene regulation to Drosophila neurobiology, and how early interests in DNA and microscopy shaped her career. We talk about the development of the GAL4 system with Norbert Perrimon and how it enabled targeted gene expression in specific tissues and cells. Andrea explains why this approach has remained useful across decades, including its applications in Drosophila and beyond, while noting that no experimental system is perfect and results should be cross-checked with other methods. We also discuss targeted DAM-ID and chromatin DAM-ID, methods developed in her lab to study protein-DNA interactions and chromatin marks in vivo without removing cells from their normal tissue environment. Andrea describes how these tools helped her lab analyze neural stem cells in their niche and investigate changes in chromatin during quiescence and reactivation. A major theme of the conversation is neural stem cell quiescence. We cover how her lab found that quiescent stem cells can show unexpectedly open chromatin, express neuronal genes, and adopt neuron-like features, including long projections and interactions with neurons. We also discuss the link to metabolism, including feeding signals, the fat body, blood-brain barrier glia, insulin-like peptides, and TGF-beta signaling. Finally, we talk about Andrea's recent move toward human brain organoids and the goal of connecting model organism work to human biology and patient data. We discuss ongoing work on quiescent cells, TRIB family genes, and cancer–neuron interactions, as well as the need to better distinguish quiescence from senescence in vivo. References Brand, A. Are you tired of dealing with bloating, heartburn, gas, acid reflux, and other digestive issues? In this video, Prof. Spira breaks down one of the most important principles in Arnold Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System: proper food combining. Most people eat as if the stomach is a garbage disposal, throwing together meat, bread, fruit, dairy, desserts, drinks, and random foods all in the same meal, then wondering why digestion feels heavy, acidic, and chaotic. This video explains why cleaning up your diet is not only about what you eat, but how you combine foods, when you eat them, and how much space you give your body between meals. Prof. Spira shows why fruit should be eaten by itself, why combination salads matter, why drinking with meals can interfere with digestion, and why dietary organization is a major part of the Transition Diet. If you've ever felt like your stomach is overloaded after meals, this video will help you understand why simplicity, timing, and proper food combinations can make such a major difference. Inside this video, we cover: * Why your stomach is not a garbage disposal * How bad food combinations can contribute to bloating, gas, and heartburn * Why fruit should be eaten by itself * How to structure a two-course transition meal * Why combination salad is a foundation in the Transition Diet * Why meal timing and spacing matter * Why drinking with meals can disrupt digestion * How the no breakfast plan fits into Ehret's system * How dietary organization supports long-term transition Stop throwing everything into your stomach and expecting clean digestion. Nature is a very broad term, and as we often discuss on this show, everything is connected. Geology impacts soil, which dictates what plants can grow. But if we pull back even further, the ultimate engine driving our planet's systems is the Sun. So when I think of Nature's Archive—and that big concept of "Nature"—I love bringing these grand, foundational subjects into our scope.Today is one such instance. Our guest is Dr. Ryan French, a solar astrophysicist and author who specializes in studying solar flares. Solar activity affects life on Earth in surprising ways—from creating spectacular auroras (the northern and southern lights) to disrupting GPS systems and power grids. And most fascinating for naturalists: these solar storms can even disrupt bird navigation and alter the foraging habits of bees.Dr. French walks us through why solar flares occur, an even more impactful phenomenon called a coronal mass ejection, why these events follow an 11-year cycle, the current state of space weather forecasting, and how you can see and photograph beautiful auroral displays yourself.Dr. French has an extremely fun and informative social media presence, so be sure to check out ryanjfrench.com for resources and links. This was a super fun discussion—one I've wanted to have pretty much since I started Nature's Archive.FULL SHOW NOTESLinksCompilation from Solar Flares and Eruptions from Dr. French's YouTube Channelryanjfrench.comCheck our Ryan's Books, including Space Hazards and The Little Book of EclipsesNOAA's Space Weather Site, including predictions and real-time observationsSupport Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Rae Wynn-Grant, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

Madlik Podcast – Torah Thoughts on Judaism From a Post-Orthodox Jew

We've all heard the old cliché that "history repeats itself," but the Torah actually reveals a massive flaw in that idea. The Greeks believed history repeats itself. Enlightenment thinkers believed history marches relentlessly forward. The Torah suggests they're both missing something. In this episode, Geoffrey Stern and Rabbi Adam Mintz begin with a single Hebrew word—eikev—and uncover a uniquely Jewish philosophy of history. Through the insights of Ramban, Giambattista Vico, Johann Gottfried Herder, Isaiah Berlin, and Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, they discover a vision of history that is neither an endless cycle nor a straight line of inevitable progress, but a sometimes crooked, yet ultimately purposeful journey in which the past continually echoes into the present. Along the way, they explore Vico's revolutionary claim that history—and indeed all of the human sciences—is fundamentally different from the physical sciences. Nature may be governed by universal laws, mathematical formulas, and today's algorithms, but history is lived, remembered, recorded, and thereby created by human beings. It can therefore be understood only by entering the language, imagination, memory, and lived experience of a people. From Herder they learn that every nation and culture possesses its own authentic voice, and from the Torah that every generation must reinterpret its inherited story without abandoning it. Discover why Jewish history doesn't simply repeat itself—it rhymes. Key Takeaways History Doesn't Repeat. It Rhymes - The Torah rejects both the Greek idea that history endlessly repeats itself and the Enlightenment belief in inevitable progress. Jewish history moves toward redemption, but along the way the same moral challenges return, inviting each generation to respond anew. Eikev Is More Than a Word - The opening word of the parsha—eikev—means "because," "heel," and "crooked path." Through Ramban, we discover that Jewish history is purposeful without always being direct. God's covenant unfolds through the winding paths of human choices rather than along a straight line. History Is Made by People, Not Formulas - Vico, Herder, Isaiah Berlin, and Rabbi Jonathan Sacks help us appreciate what the Torah has always assumed: unlike the physical sciences, history cannot be reduced to universal laws or algorithms. It is created by people, cultures, language, and memory—and can only be understood by entering their lived experience. If you're like me, you consume a lot of information. Many people do that through platforms like social media, but I tend to consume a lot through reading. Recently, I came across a phrase that really stood out: decision hoarding. What is decision hoarding? It's when you hold onto decisions instead of letting them flow. You keep your hands on everything, becoming the bottleneck in your business, your team, or even your family. It often means others have to come to you for every final decision. The problem is, when you're not there, everything stops. People become paralyzed because they haven't been given the tools, knowledge, or authority to move forward on their own. Then you return and feel frustrated, wondering why nothing got done. This happens more often than people realize. Decision hoarding usually means you haven't fully empowered others. You haven't provided clear processes, expectations, or the confidence for them to act independently. But empowerment also means allowing mistakes. I once brought someone new onto my team who struggled to make decisions because their previous environment was highly micromanaged. That kind of experience can create hesitation and even fear around decision-making. So I focus on giving people the tools, clarity, and permission to act — knowing that mistakes are part of growth. Many people who hoard decisions are actually trying to be perfect. They wait, overthink, and delay instead of making clear, timely choices. Fast decision-makers, on the other hand, understand that progress matters more than perfection. I saw this growing up as well. My mother tended to hold control over decisions, and when she didn't have that control, she would channel her energy elsewhere. It was a reminder of how deeply ingrained this pattern can be. But decision hoarding is paralyzing — for you and for everyone around you. It slows progress, creates frustration, and limits growth. If you look at nature, it doesn't operate this way. Nature follows systems and flows based on what's needed — air, water, fire, earth. There's a natural responsiveness and balance. We can learn from that. In our own lives, sometimes what's needed is clarity, communication, research, or simply space. Sometimes you need to step back and let others step forward. And sometimes, you just need to pause — stop over-relying on external input and think for yourself. There's a lot of power in allowing your own mind to work, to create, and to solve problems. So ask yourself: are you holding onto decisions that should be released? --- Follow & Let's Get in Touch! Huxley is an example of having a good attitude about publicly acknowledging errors and learning from them. He earned the nickname “Darwin’s bulldog” for his very vocal support of Darwin’s work, and he wanted to promote science and education, particularly to people that didn’t normally have access to those things. What will it take to begin to heal the deep wounds between women and men? What is the role of men in this transformation? Cynthia Brix and Will Keepin from Gender Reconciliation International say that only by bringing these wounds into the light can we heal them. Patriarchy destroys men's souls, too, so a revolution in gender relations can liberate women and men. The Gender Equity and Reconciliation process seeks to heal the profound wounds around gender, sexuality, and relational intimacy. It brings together people of all sexual orientations and genders to jointly confront gender disharmony to reach healing reconciliation. Will and Cynthia have developed the method over 24 years, introducing the practices in nine countries. Gender reconciliation's startling successes in South Africa have played a role in transforming that country's AIDS and HIV policies, and exciting new academic research on the program is underway at two South African universities. Author and journalist Cal Flyn discusses her book The Savage Landscape with EconTalk host Russ Roberts, weaving together journeys to some of Earth's most remote places, including a live volcanic eruption in Iceland she hiked toward despite the danger. Flyn rejects the myth of pristine, unpeopled wilderness, revealing that the wildest-looking landscapes have been shaped by humans for centuries. She explores spiritual quests at Mount Sinai, the return of predators to Europe, the uncomfortable economics of trophy hunting, and why we secretly crave discomfort in an age of endless comfort.
