This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Benjamin Wittes, Natalie Orpett, and Molly Roberts for a special deep-dive into the intervention in Venezuela, including:“A Hop, Skip, and Jump Across the Rubicon.” This past weekend, the Trump administration took the step that Trump has been threatening for months: he deployed special operations to capture Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and bring him to the United States for criminal prosecution. The targeted operation was only hours long and resulted in no American fatalities, though more than 70 people in Venezuela were reportedly killed. The Trump administration has described it as a “law enforcement” operation. But what was it really? And where did he get the authority to do it?“A Truly Extraordinary Rendition.” By Monday, Maduro and his wife were in New York being arraigned on an array of drug- and weapons-related conspiracy charges. But prosecuting a head of state—albeit one not recognized by the United States—presents certain unique challenges. How should we expect the criminal case to proceed? “Running in Place.” President Trump has asserted that he and his advisers are now going to “run” Venezuela. But he's left Maduro's deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, in place, in lieu of the opposition movement the United States and many other countries have recognized as Venezuela's legitimate government. Trump and his advisers seem intent on dictating terms to Venezuela through the “leverage” provided them by the ongoing quarantine over Venezuela's oil, and potentially the threat of additional military action. But can this light-touch strategy succeed? In object lessons, (notably Chicagoan) Natalie delights in her long-standing admiration of The New Yorker with Netflix's documentary “The New Yorker at 100.” Molly approaches Trump's takeover of D.C. golf courses with a pitch for Knotty by Nature's wooden putters. Scott honors the 5th anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol with a recommendation of Ellie Silverman's moving profile of Nathan Tate in the Washington Post. And Ben honors the same anniversary with both a revisiting of Lawfare's narrative podcast series The Aftermath, and, relatedly, a surprise interview by Holly Berkley Fletcher with one of the attack's most infamous perpetrators. What does it mean to be a wild animal in a world dominated by humans? A recent study found that city-dwelling raccoons' snouts are getting shorter—a sign of domestication. Another study on dark-eyed juncos living on a Los Angeles college campus found that their beaks changed shape during the COVID-19 lockdown, when there wasn't as much food and trash on campus.  Evolutionary biologist Pamela Yeh and animal domestication expert Raffaela Lesch join Host Flora Lichtman to discuss how wildlife is evolving in urban areas, what it means to be domesticated, and when we can expect to have a pet raccoon sleeping at the foot of the bed.  Guests:Dr. Pamela Yeh is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA.Dr. Raffaela Lesch is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Welcome to Day 2771 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday –The Prayers of Christ and the Destiny of the Faithful.   Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2771 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps!   I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2771 of our Trek.   The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website   theologyinfive.com.   Today's lesson is titled The Prayers of Christ and the Destiny of the Faithful.   When Jesus prays to the Father in the Gospels, He does so as the Incarnate Son, fully God and fully man. His prayers are not signs of weakness or inequality, but expressions of true humanity. They reflect His relationship with the Father within the limitations of flesh and blood, taken on voluntarily to accomplish the redemption of mankind. Yet Christ's prayers do more than model dependence. They reveal His mission, not merely to forgive sin, but to lead those united to Him into eternal fellowship with Yahweh, where they will be glorified through their relationship with Him. In His High Priestly Prayer in John seventeen, Jesus says: “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one” (John seventeen verse twenty-two). This is not poetic exaggeration. It is a clear expression of Christ's intent to raise His followers into the glory that He shares with the Father, restoring and transforming them in the process. The first segment is: Jesus's Prayers as Revelation of His Mission. In John seventeen verses one and two, Jesus prays: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.” Christ's authority includes granting eternal life, an existence defined not merely by duration, but by nature: incorruptibility, righteousness, and unending communion with God. Later in the same prayer, He says: “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory…” (John seventeen verse twenty-four) Though Christ is fully divine, He chose to humble Himself. As Paul writes in Philippians two verses six through eight, though existing in the form of God, He did not cling to His divine status but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant. Hebrews two says He was made for a little while lower than the angels, not because He lost divinity, but because He embraced full humanity. His prayers reflect this self-imposed humility and His desire to elevate those He redeems. The second segment is: The Resurrection Body and the Nature of Glorified Transformation. Scripture consistently affirms the transformation of the faithful, not merely morally, but ontologically. Psalm eight states that man was made “a little lower than the heavenly beings,” but destined to be crowned with glory and honor. Hebrews two applies this to Christ and, by extension, to all who belong to Him. First Corinthians fifteen declares that believers will be raised with glorified, incorruptible bodies. Paul...

What happens when an Australian butcher starts reading Leviticus—and finds it fun? In this unique episode, Dru Johnson speaks with Phil Bray, author of Leviticus on the Butcher's Block, about how his day job cutting lambs and steaks helped him see the book of Leviticus in a whole new light. Phil traces his journey from casual Bible reader to Leviticus superfan, exploring how rituals, sacrifice, and atonement make far more sense when you've broken down hundreds of animals by hand. Phil shares how ancient sacrificial rituals weren't necessarily about violent death but about preparing food as a gift to God. The conversation dives into the Hebrew understanding of holiness, clean vs. unclean, and why God's presence is depicted as a space without disease or death. Along the way, Phil and Dru reflect on Mary Douglas, Jewish slaughter laws, the power of smell and memory, and how the altar isn't where the animal dies—but where it becomes holy. Phil's insights bring theology and meat science into one coherent (and hilarious) frame, showing why Leviticus is deeply spiritual, richly embodied, and more relevant than most Christians assume. Dr. Judith Curry, a climatologist known for her criticism of alarmist, doomsday rhetoric about climate change, returns to STEM-Talk for her second appearance. Judy most recently was one of five researchers commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy to draft a Climate Assessment Report summarizing the current state of climate science with a focus on how it relates to the United States. In this interview, Judy summarizes the climate report's key points, including the finding that that carbon-dioxide induced warming of the planet appears to be less damaging economically than has been commonly believed. The report, which was released this past summer, also argues that aggressive mitigation strategies for carbon dioxide emissions could be more harmful than helpful. Our interview comes on the heels of the prestigious journal Nature retracting a study that predicted climate change and carbon emissions would cause catastrophic economic damage by the end of the century.  Our conversation with Judy also followed an about-face from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who wrote last fall that it's time to tamp down the alarmist rhetoric that climate change will lead to humanity's demise. Curry is president of the Climate Forecast Application Network and host of the blog, Climate Etc, which you can find at JudyCurry.com.  Her blog provides  a forum for climate researchers, academics and technical experts from other fields as well as citizen scientists to discuss topics related to climate science and science policy. Her research interests include hurricanes, remote sensing, atmospheric modeling, polar climates, air-sea interactions, climate models, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for atmospheric research. She has published more than 100 scientific papers and is the author of “Climate Change and Uncertainty: Rethinking Our Response,” a book that provides a framework for understanding and rethinking the climate-change debate.  Show notes: [00:03:59] Ken opens the interview explaining that Judy was one of the five authors of a climate assessment report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy. Before diving into the key findings of the report and the response it has received, Ken asks Judy to explain how she became one of the five authors. [00:06:21] Ken mentions that critics of the climate working group have accused the authors of being hand-picked skeptics of the effects of climate change. Judy argues that she and her co-authors are scientists determined to get the science right. Ken asks Judy to talk about her co-authors and the working relationship of the group. [00:09:18] Ken asks Judy to talk about how she and her co-authors came to their key finding that the economic impacts of climate change are less severe than typically thought. [00:13:08] Ken asks Judy to provide examples that demonstrate how climate mitigation strategies can be more harmful than helpful. [00:16:08] Ken follows up by asking about the report's proposal to shift climate science from alarmism to focus more on a better understanding of natural climate variability. [00:18:14] Ken asks Judy what her thoughts are on the next steps that should be taken for a better understanding climate variability. [00:20:06] Ken asks Judy to elaborate on the findings of chapter six of the report regarding global warming and extreme weather events. In particular, Ken asks about the problems with associating specific extreme weather events like hurricanes to climate change, and the issues created by the short historical records we have at our disposal. [00:24:20] Ken asks Judy to talk about chapter nine of the report, which is about the need to focus on reducing vulnerabilities in our infrastructure instead of mitigating carbon emissions. [00:28:43] Ken asks Judy to comment on the accusations that she is a “climate change denier.” [00:31:18] Ken asks Judy to talk about a paper she co-authored with her colleague Dr. Harry DeAngelo titled “A critique of apocalyptic climate narrative.” [00:36:27] Ken brings up Bill Gates' recent about-face on climate change and the need to pivot away from doomsday views of cataclysmic climate disasters. Ken asks Judy to elaborate on what she has dubbed “climate alarmism fatigue.” [00:39:32] Ken asks Judy to give her thoughts on the issue of sea level rise, particularly in light of the pushback that the DOE report faced on this topic. He also asks her to discuss the recent paper that was released after the DOE report titled “A global perspective on local sea level changes” which proports that there is no statistically significant acceleration of the rate of sea level rise for 98% of the suitable global locations. [00:50:47] Ken points listeners to Judy's blog, Judycurry.com, where she discusses many of these same issues. Ken goes on to explain that his perspective as well as Judy's perspective is that climate change has become a scapegoat for many issues. He asks Judy to talk about this phenomenon. [00:55:24] Ken asks Judy what she would like to see in terms of follow-up research to the DOE climate report. [01:00:23] Ken asks Judy about her book “Climate Uncertainty and Risk.” Links: Judith Curry bio Learn more about IHMC STEM-Talk homepage Ken Ford bio Ken Ford Wikipedia page

Plant ecologist Robin Wall Kimmerer, a self-proclaimed “student of the plants,” has dedicated her life to helping people of all ages understand the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. Her latest initiative “Plant Baby Plant” does exactly that, by mobilizing communities to restore plants while building collective power for the Earth. Kimmerer is a distinguished professor, MacArthur Fellow, mother and an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Her 2013 book “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants” emerged as a surprise bestseller with almost three million copies sold across 20 languages. In this enlightening episode, Robin Wall Kimmerer and Laura Flanders explore how nature can inform our language, our economy, our movements and more. As you'll hear, our survival depends on it. Plus, a commentary from Laura on what it took to separate people from nature. Hint: it wasn't peaceful.“I think it is so important that we embrace ecological grief rather than look away . . . When we recognize that pain we feel for our relationships with the natural world is also the measure of our love for the living world. It's that love which is mirrored in the grief that makes you get back up and say, ‘Not on my watch.'” - Robin Wall Kimmerer“. . . We have to kind of decolonize our minds from this industrial revolution concept that the Earth belongs to us as a source of nothing more than belongings, natural resources that are our property . . . What if the goal of life wasn't comfort, success, or even happiness – but meaning? In this episode of Common Denominator, I sit down with Sann McCandless, a life and career coach who helps people design lives rooted in courage, intention, and self-trust. We explore why fear isn't something to overcome but something to walk alongside, how imposter syndrome is actually a sign of growth, and why the most meaningful lives are built in chapters – not linear paths.Sanni shares how intentional living starts with honest self-check-ins, why confidence isn't about ability but self-acceptance, and how nature plays a powerful role in regulating our nervous system and reconnecting us to presence. We also dive into relationships with high performers, parenting, and what it really means to live with perspective when life feels short and precious. This conversation is for anyone feeling stuck, burned out, or quietly craving a life that feels richer, braver, and more alive. In this episode you'll learn:- Why fear doesn't go away, and why that's okay- The real antidote to imposter syndrome- Why confidence is about self-acceptance, not competence- How nature restores presence and regulates the nervous system- The difference between comfort, meaning, and peak experiences- What courageous, intentional people truly have in common- How to live intentionally without being reckless or selfishIf you're questioning your path, your priorities, or what you actually want out of life — this episode will meet you right where you are.Like this episode? This podcast is supported entirely by you, the listener. Without your patronage, none of this is possible. Become a patron of my work for as little as $0.50/week here: https://stoicismpod.com/members -- In this episode I reset Practical Stoicism back to its foundations and begin a new chapter for the show by returning to the classical texts themselves. I explain why this version of the podcast will move deliberately across the Stoic corpus rather than reading a single work straight through, drawing from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, Musonius Rufus, and, where possible, the early Greek Stoics like Zeno of Citium, Chrysippus, and Cleanthes. From there, I focus on Meditations 2.1, one of the most concise and powerful passages in Meditations, using George Long's translation. I explain why Marcus is so often misunderstood, why he should be read as a deeply committed practitioner rather than a philosophical instructor, and why Meditations was never meant to teach Stoicism to anyone but Marcus himself. We then unpack what Marcus is really doing in this meditation: preparing himself to meet difficult people, refusing to moralize or dehumanize them, and grounding his response in the Stoic claim that ignorance of good and evil (virtue and vice) is the root of wrongdoing. I explain why, in Stoicism, there is only one good and one evil, how this reframes resentment and anger, and why Marcus sees hostility toward others as fundamentally anti-social and contrary to Nature. The episode closes by showing how Stoicism combines sympathy, personal responsibility, and moral resolve, and why caring for others is not optional if one is genuinely pursuing virtue. This is not a philosophy of withdrawal or toughness for its own sake, but a demanding ethical system aimed at producing better human beings. Key takeaways from this episode include: Why Meditations is a private practice document, not a Stoic instruction manual, and how misunderstanding this leads to shallow readings How Meditations 2.1 reveals the Stoic view that vice is ignorance, not malice, and why this matters for how we treat others Why Stoicism is fundamentally pro-social, and why turning away from others undermines the pursuit of virtue itself If you'd like to provide feedback on this episode, or have question, you may do so as a member. Email sent by non-members will not be answered (though they may be read). This isn't punitive, I just cannot keep up. Limiting access to members reduces my workload. Scripps Institution of Oceanography marine biologists Bradley Moore and Natalie Grayson explore how ocean life uses molecules as a language. Examples include a pigment that lets squid and octopus change color for camouflage, a coral and its microbial partners that produce biologically active compounds, and a chemical now in phase three human clinical trials to treat glioblastoma, an aggressive cancer of the brain. Their research has applications for new materials in biotech, and improving the food supply and human health. Series: "Jeffrey B. In this episode, Bethany shares the lessons she has learned over the last couple of weeks as she has helped 7 of her goats get through birthing a total of 15 kids. Nature is a powerful teacher, so there are core lessons that we can ponder upon and ultimately incorporate into life and practice ownership.

We often times want to fix perimenopause, but what if we are able to reframe it as a threshold the body is guiding us through. In this episode, we explore how time in nature supports the perimenopausal nervous system by lowering cortisol and inflammation, and how this physiological shift can ease symptoms such as anxiety, weight gain, brain fog, and the emotional rollarcoaster. Through a Wild & Rooted lens, this conversation weaves together science, nervous system wisdom, and the spiritual remembering that we are not meant to move through this season alone; instead we can work in partnership/relationship with nature, which offers co-regulation, rhythm, and belonging. Winter is not the time for New Year's Resolutions—if that looks like taking action right now because we're "supposed to" even though we don't have the energy for it. Statistics prove that Winter is not a Natural time to take massive action—23% of people give up on their resolutions within the first week and 88% by the second week.Winter is, however, a very Natural time to attune to what Love is asking of you, to nourish yourself and let it root down into you, and to let your energy pool inside of you as it will naturally pick back up with the returning Light over the next 6 weeks. This is the Natural time to rest and dream, to reimagine your life, to recreate yourself from the inside out. Nature is doing a lot of growth right now, but it's largely invisible, happening in the dark of the soil. This is what's Natural for us to do right now too, and this episode will help you to do that.Whether you're listening to this episode at the 2026 New Year or in the future, remember... In this episode of Superlative, host and aBlogtoWatch founder Ariel Adams sits down with professional big wave surfer and TAG Heuer brand ambassador Kai Lenny for an in depth conversation about risk, preparation, and what timing really means when nature is in full control. Growing up in Hawaii with some of the most powerful surf breaks in the world just minutes from his home, Kai explains how learning to read the ocean from land shaped his approach long before he ever paddled into massive waves, and why wave selection is as much a mental calculation as it is physical commitment. The discussion explores the realities of big wave surfing, from the physics of underwater pressure and the danger of impact over drowning, to the evolving role of safety equipment, communication systems, and training that allow surfers to operate at the edge of survivability. Ariel and Kai also unpack why surfing is fundamentally a time based sport, how tides, wave sets, and forecasting dictate every decision, and why a reliable dive watch remains a critical tool even in a world of advanced analytics. Along the way, Kai shares how working closely with TAG Heuer goes far beyond sponsorship, offering insight into testing watches in conditions that cannot be simulated on land, providing real world feedback on durability and ergonomics, and drawing inspiration from Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship to refine his own approach to equipment, performance, and constant improvement. The conversation closes with a thoughtful reflection on parenthood, legacy, and how confronting nature's power reshapes perspective, revealing why for those who live at the extremes, timepieces are not just accessories but quiet companions that measure moments most people will never experience.Follow Kai and check out TAG Heuer Watches:Kai - https://www.instagram.com/kai_lenny/ TAG Heuer - https://www.tagheuer.com/ SUPERLATIVE IS NOW ON YOUTUBE! Stefan Molyneux looks at the difficulties in getting kids to understand morality, pointing out how dense philosophical ideas and religious lessons often fall short. He takes aim at old-school punishments that don't really build a true sense of right and wrong, and instead pushes for a straightforward approach that children can pick up on naturally. He stresses the need to focus on empathy, wrapping up with a call to create straightforward ways to teach morals that let kids tap into their own sense of agency."On the Nature and Existence of GOD!" is at https://fdrpodcasts.com/6244/on-the-nature-and-existence-of-godSUBSCRIBE TO ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxFollow me on Youtube! https://www.youtube.com/@freedomain1GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
