Episode Description: In today's episode (originally recorded as an Instagram Live), I'm answering some of your most pressing questions about insulin resistance and the buzz around GLP-1 medications—through the lens of real healing, root cause solutions, and God's design for the body. We're talking about: Why you might still have insulin resistance even if your labs look “normal” What actually happens when insulin is high—even if your blood sugar isn't How long it takes to reverse insulin resistance (and what most people get wrong) Why some people struggle with insulin resistance even when they're not overweight What GLP-1 is, and why it affects hunger and fat loss How to naturally support GLP-1 function without meds What happens when you stop taking medications like Ozempic or Mounjaro And the truth about whether GLP-1 meds fix root issues or just mask symptoms Plus: I'm sharing the exact free resources and tools I use with clients to naturally support insulin, blood sugar, and hormone balance—without gimmicks or restriction.
Mike Keen came up with the idea of a kayak expedition off the coast of Greenland before he had any clue about how transformative it would be for his life and health and worldview! Today, he dives into what went down—what it was like eating the traditional Inuit diet (including fermented seal!), how his body responded to the kayaking and change in diet, and insights gathered by the microbiologists examining his stool samples (yes, his poop). Now, he has planned to explore more remote places and to continue diving into traditional diets to see how his body responds. A former chef, Mike now admits that he learned more from this experience kayaking around Greenland than from the many decades prior, when he was purchasing and preparing overly processed foods. In Part 2 of this powerful interview, legendary protein researcher Dr. Donald Layman returns to the Optimal Protein Podcast to unpack some of the most misunderstood concepts in nutrition today—and to reveal potential groundbreaking changes to the U.S. dietary guidelines around protein, red meat, saturated fat, and carbohydrates. Dr. Layman breaks down what the science actually says about protein dosing, timing, oxidation, and muscle uptake—and who truly needs to worry about protein distribution. Vanessa and Dr. Layman also discuss:
In response to the article I wrote in The Times about whether I was daft for not using skinny jabs to lose weight, I thought revisiting my conversation with Johann Hari about his book Magic Pill, which extensively researched the benefits, limitations and risks of GLP-1 Agonist drugs such as Ozempic, Semaglutide, Wegovy and Mounjaro.Johann is thorough and meticulous in his research and this interview, originally broadcast in 2024, was before weight loss drugs became as mainstream and as widely prescribed as they are today. One of the experts Johann interviewed during his years of research, stated that the cultural impact of GLP-1s was as significant as the smart phone. At the time, it seemed like a very bold statement, but in the year since we spoke, I think it's hard to argue that they haven't completely changed the way we talk about weight, weight loss, diets, food and more...I'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses the recently released 2025 report on the best overall diets. She critiques the methodology behind nutritional research, emphasizing issues such as recall bias and the reliability of food frequency questionnaires. Leyla then provides an in-depth review of the top ten diets listed in the report: Mediterranean, DASH, Flexitarian, MIND, Mayo Clinic, TLC, Menopause, Dr. Andrew Weil's Anti-inflammatory, Volumetrics, and Cleveland Clinic diets. She argues that many of these diets are misrepresented, particularly regarding their fat content and sustainability claims. Leyla also offers her insights on what constitutes a truly effective and sustainable diet.

In today's insightful Clinician's Corner episode, Clarissa Kennedy and Molly Painschab delve into chronic invalidation as a trauma response, exploring its origins, impacts, and practical healing strategies. This episode offers clinicians compassionate insights and actionable tools for supporting clients on their healing journeys. Key Highlights: Understanding Chronic Invalidation Chronic invalidation occurs when emotions, needs, or perceptions are consistently dismissed, causing internalization of critical voices. Common invalidating statements include "You're too sensitive," "It's not that bad," and "Don't cry." Chronic invalidation often results in perfectionism, emotional suppression, people-pleasing, and using food or substances to cope. Origins and Impact Invalidating behaviors can originate from caregivers' inability to handle their own emotions. Chronic invalidation can manifest in adulthood as strong inner critics, emotional numbness, hyper-vigilance, and difficulty identifying personal emotions and needs. Invalidated individuals often experience significant relationship challenges, attachment issues, and ongoing self-doubt. Healing Strategies for Clients Awareness: Encourage noticing and naming the inner critic as a first significant step toward healing. Curiosity and Compassion: Recognize the inner critic as a protective mechanism developed to cope with past hurts. Co-regulation and Community: Seek safe, validating environments where clients can experience relational repair through community support and co-regulation. Therapeutic Modalities for Addressing Chronic Invalidation: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps clients identify and reframe invalidating thoughts. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Provides emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills. Internal Family Systems (IFS): Validates all parts of self without shame. Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal Theory: Body-based approaches to regulate the nervous system and safely reconnect clients with their bodies. Clinician Guidance and Reminders Avoid invalidating language (e.g., labeling clients as resistant or not having hit "rock bottom"). Validate client experiences before offering problem-solving approaches. Model self-validation and demonstrate relational repair in therapeutic interactions. Encourage distress tolerance skills among clinicians to prevent rescuing behaviors driven by personal discomfort. Embodied Practice (Somatic Experiencing Exercise) Clarissa leads listeners through a gentle, somatic experiencing practice designed to: Identify areas of stored emotional tension. Invite compassionate awareness and gentle inquiry into bodily sensations. Facilitate nervous system regulation through grounding, breathwork, and affirmations. Closing Insights Healing from chronic invalidation is a gradual, individualized journey. Encourage clients to begin with the strategies and modalities that feel safest and most accessible. Remind clients and clinicians alike that healing is not linear but is profoundly supported through compassionate awareness, relational repair, and community. Join us next month for more empowering insights on Clinician's Corner! The content of our show is educational only. It does not supplement or supersede your healthcare provider's professional relationship and direction. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified mental health providers with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition, substance use disorder, or mental health concern.
That window between getting home from work and going to bed can feel like clocking into a second full-time job. The second shift - your role as mother, wife, pet parent, chauffeur, chef, and manager of all the things - is emotionally charged and exhausting. You're physically tired from your day, legitimately hungry from meals eaten hours ago, and experiencing mental whiplash from switching between your structured work role and the emotional labor of caregiving. Add decision fatigue from making thousands of choices throughout the day, and it's no wonder your brain defaults to takeout, cereal, or wine and popcorn. Tune in this week to learn practical strategies to transform this chaotic time into something more manageable and grounded. Mike and Heavy Hepp take a moment to remember the life and work of Ozzy Osbourne who'd passed away in July 2025. Ozzy shaped the musical landscape, especially in rock and metal, and was a significant piece of our youth. When something or someone from our past exits this life, there's a significant internal feeling that goes along with it related to the progression of life. Thank you Ozzy! You've been doing “all the right things” for a few weeks. Eating better, moving your body but the scale hasn't budged. Sound familiar? That's not failure. That's normal. In this episode, we unpack the uncomfortable truth: healing and real transformation take time, often much longer than we want. You'll hear why quick fixes and crash diets set you up for disappointment, and why slow, steady progress is the only path to sustainable change. We'll talk about prepping your body before weight loss even begins, what to expect when you start eating more, and why discomfort (yes, including hunger and resistance) is part of the journey. I also share what it took for me to transform over two years and why I still don't believe in a “finish line.” If you're frustrated with your progress or tempted to give up after a few weeks, this episode will reframe everything.
