Superstition, idolatry, divination, and magic are all things we can encounter in our daily lives, and, with Fr. Mike, we unpack how they break the first commandment. Fr. Mike reiterates that superstition represents an “excess of religion” and can affect the worship we offer to God. He points out that we can be superstitious even in our Catholic practices. He also explains that idolatry consists of divinizing anything that is not God. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2110-2117. They have a 1 out of 100 chance of winning the House. Don't say they didn't warn you. For instance, the national bellwether race in the state of Virginia has a Democrat on a narrow edge. So does the battleground New York House contest. Texas is still red… but so tantalizingly close… so inviting to drop some cash now for 2028. Bulletin: Most blame Donald K. Trump for higher prices and are unhappy with how he is handling the economy. Trump blames himself for his awful Supreme Court. And for not banning all journalism and just hiring an ad agency. He told you he had a gun! But did you listen? Most likely, we'll have some sort of midterms though, and Republicans are pretty certain to lose, and pretty certain that they will lose. In Texas, many are voting for a change of face, many because they actually like James Talarico as much as they hate Trump. Many are voting against Ken Paxton, although drowning him would be fine. Gina Hinojosa is doing well with those who ran out of excuses for their education system. Bobby Pulido really makes Quinceañeras great again. Susan Collins probably can't sing but can't do commercials well either. Sherrod Brown really can't sing but knows how to do a commercial. Republicans discovered that there are fewer rich voters than poor voters, so how does 38¢ off a gallon of gas sound, hm? In this first part of our How to Play Numenera series, Randall attempts to explain a billion years of lost civilizations, Ash discovers that physics are apparently optional, and Tyler starts asking the dangerous questions about Edge. Before long, we have ancient nanotechnology, mysterious artifacts, cyphers that might explode if you hoard them, stat pools that double as hit points, and a GM who can literally bribe you with XP to make your life more interesting. Show Notes We're kicking off our How to Play Numenera series with a tour of the Ninth World and the Cypher System mechanics that make this wonderfully strange science fantasy RPG work. Randall walks Ash and Tyler through the Numenera setting, a version of Earth roughly a billion years in the future after eight unimaginably advanced civilizations have risen and disappeared. Their technology is everywhere, but the people of the Ninth World understand so little of it that ancient machinery might as well be magic. That gives Numenera its central science fantasy theme: sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. We dig into the Steadfast, the Beyond, and the increasingly strange places beyond civilization, along with the remnants left behind by previous worlds. Those remnants include reusable artifacts, one-use cyphers, mysterious oddities, and massive ancient structures that the characters may have absolutely no idea how to operate. Sometimes the players know they have discovered an elevator. Their characters definitely do not. From there, we get into how to play Numenera and the Cypher System core mechanics. Tasks have difficulty levels from 0 to 10, with the target number determined by multiplying the difficulty by three. Instead of piling bonuses onto a d20 roll, characters make challenges easier through training, specialization, assets, and Effort. Effort introduces one of Numenera's most interesting resource-management decisions. Might, Speed, and Intellect are not simply ability scores. They are pools that power abilities, fuel Effort, and absorb damage. Spend too aggressively and you may discover that the resource you just used to succeed is also the thing keeping your character alive. Then there's Edge, which reduces the cost of spending points from those pools. Naturally, Tyler immediately begins investigating whether enough Edge will allow him to achieve his ultimate character build: the Edge Lord. We also explore one of the signature Cypher System RPG mechanics, GM intrusions. The GM can offer XP to introduce an unexpected complication, while players can spend XP to reject intrusions, reroll critical checks, create temporary skills, trigger player intrusions, or advance their characters. The goal is not simply to punish players. A good GM intrusion makes the story more interesting, creates new opportunities, and occasionally puts something cool behind the wall that just collapsed on you. By the end, we've covered the Numenera setting, cyphers and artifacts, task difficulty, Effort, Edge, stat pools, XP, GM intrusions, player intrusions, and the basics of character advancement. It's a surprisingly streamlined system hiding underneath one of the strangest tabletop RPG settings we've explored. Task difficulty ranges from 0 to 10, with the target number equal to the difficulty multiplied by three. Training, specialization, assets, and Effort can ease difficult tasks and bring otherwise impossible rolls within reach. Might, Speed, and Intellect are resource pools used for abilities and Effort, but they also function as your character's health. Damage normally reduces Might first, followed by Speed and then Intellect. If all three pools reach zero, things have gone very badly. Edge reduces the cost of spending points from a stat pool and becomes increasingly powerful as characters advance. In the Cypher System, the GM generally does not roll dice. Players make both offensive and defensive rolls. GM intrusions let the GM introduce complications in exchange for XP, turning unexpected problems into part of the game's advancement economy. XP can be spent on rerolls, player intrusions, temporary skills, and permanent character advancement, creating a constant choice between helping yourself now or saving for later. Numenera encourages creativity over strict simulation. Sometimes the explanation really is, "Ancient technology did it." It's a surprisingly streamlined system hiding underneath one of the strangest tabletop RPG settings we've explored. Key Takeaways Numenera takes place on Earth roughly one billion years in the future, after eight previous civilizations have risen and disappeared. The Ninth World mixes science fiction and fantasy by treating incomprehensibly advanced technology like magic. Numenera includes artifacts, one-use cyphers, oddities, and enormous remnants of ancient civilizations. The Cypher System uses a d20, but characters generally reduce task difficulty instead of adding large numerical bonuses to rolls. Task difficulty ranges from 0 to 10, with the target number equal to the difficulty multiplied by three. Training, specialization, assets, and Effort can ease difficult tasks and bring otherwise impossible rolls within reach. Might, Speed, and Intellect are resource pools used for abilities and Effort, but they also function as your character's health. Damage normally reduces Might first, followed by Speed and then Intellect. If all three pools reach zero, things have gone very badly. Edge reduces the cost of spending points from a stat pool and becomes increasingly powerful as characters advance. In the Cypher System, the GM generally does not roll dice. Players make both offensive and defensive rolls. GM intrusions let the GM introduce complications in exchange for XP, turning unexpected problems into part of the game's advancement economy. XP can be spent on rerolls, player intrusions, temporary skills, and permanent character advancement, creating a constant choice between helping yourself now or saving for later. Numenera encourages creativity over strict simulation. Sometimes the explanation really is, "Ancient technology did it." It gave me everything I want from fantasy: compelling characters, fascinating worldbuilding, a unique magic system, and themes that gave me so much to think about long after I finished reading.One of my favorite aspects is the way science, physics, mathematics, and magic work together. Magic essentially feels like coding—you have calculations, written spells, and a system with actual structure behind it. But that incredible worldbuilding is only the beginning.M. L. Wang uses this story to dig into classism, colonialism, sexism, religion, institutional power, and who gets access to knowledge. If we had the courage to venture into the depth of inquiry that guides a nice essay to a memorable story, what unexpected magic, freedom, or self-understanding might happen next? The depth of inquiry into our personal narratives moves even the best essays away from a nice recounting of facts and events and what happened to what did it all mean? There's more to your story than facts and events. Our stories become memorable when we deeply explore our lived experience, become curious about our motivations, what was at stake, the choices we made, the risks we took, and then reflect on how those experiences earned us a hard-won lesson. To get started recording a lived memory moment experience you recall—maybe the first job you ever had or the first time you stood up for yourself—set down the time, place and setting of the facts and events as you remember them. Next, capture highlights of the character (that would be you), who she was, how she was living her life, and why we might care about her. What was the event that upended her daily routine and set her up to want something different for herself? What was the problem that got in the way of what she wanted and how did she overcome it? Now we're embarking on the depth of inquiry. We focus our attention on the character's underlying emotions, feelings, fears, doubts, struggles, and values. These personal truths help us understand the meaning of what has happened when her routine was upended, what was at stake for her, and why she chooses to do what she does to get what she so keenly desires, come what may. When we dig deep into our lived experiences by asking difficult questions, refusing to accept our initial reactions, and allowing the story to lead us, we transform surface answers into self-awareness, self-understanding, and self-affirmation. Jace and Rocky break down all 7 DC releases for the week of September 30, 2026. Wonder Woman Annual 2026 #1 gives the Matriarch considerably more depth and motivation, but Jace and Rocky both struggle with how this more vulnerable, emotionally driven characterization fits with the formidable version of the character established in Tom King's run. Bleeding Hearts #8 expands the complexity of Dennis Camp's zombie world by introducing different perspectives within the undead themselves, while Jace and Rocky praise the shifting viewpoints and striking artwork even as Jace sees the issue largely as setup for what comes next. Poison Ivy #48 leaves both Jace and Rocky frustrated by what feels like a regression for Ivy after so much character development under G. Willow Wilson, with Jace questioning whether the Bad Seeds storyline can ultimately use this setback to push her forward again. Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1 brings the nine-part crossover to a conclusion that Jace and Rocky find far less satisfying than its promising beginning, although Jace is much more enthusiastic about the numerous epilogues and the Superman stories they set up for the future. Zatanna #6 continues to divide the hosts, with Jace admiring Jamal Campbell's artwork but struggling to become invested in the expanding cast and magical lore, while Rocky remains enthusiastic about the Hidden City, its political intrigue and Campbell's continued world-building around Zatanna. Bizarro: Year None #3 earns praise from both Jace and Rocky for its artwork, but neither connects with the story, with Jace finding it forgettable between issues and Rocky still struggling to understand exactly what the series is trying to accomplish after reading the issue three times. Adventures of Superman: Book of El #12 closes Philip Kennedy Johnson's saga with Jace appreciating an earned resolution built around Superman's compassion and the larger mythology Johnson has added to the character, while Rocky remains unconvinced by this vision of Superman's future. There are no facsimiles or other reprints this week, but Jace and Rocky cover a substantial group of collected editions before ranking all 7 books and revealing their Books of the Week.
