Despite uncertainty for US clean energy investors, things are looking good for the geothermal sector. US$1.7 billion in public funding was pumped into geothermal projects in Q1 this year - 85% of 2024's entire annual allocation – as breakthrough technologies promise to transform untapped resources into commercially viable clean energy projects.Enhanced geothermal and advanced geothermal technologies are making geothermal energy accessible anywhere, not just at existing sites chosen for their high-temperatures.To explore the science behind EGS and AGS, host Sylvia Leyva Martinez is joined by John Plack, VP of engineering at Ameresco. John explains how techniques adapted from the oil and gas sector, like directional drilling and reservoir stimulation, are improving geothermal's commercial viability. John shares what's changed since the IRA's passage, the role of EGS, and why improved subsurface mapping is critical to unlocking investment.Geothermal is currently supplying less than 1% of global energy needs, but could provide 15% of worldwide power by 2050. The US leads global geothermal power production, yet its 4 GW of installed capacity leaves vast resources untapped. Total potential US geothermal capacity exceeds 500 GW, with the best sites in western states featuring temperatures above 150°C and heat flow rates exceeding 80 milliwatts per square metre.Investment is there, and the technology is there, so has the impact of the Trump administration's energy policy been lighter for geothermal than other sectors like wind and solar? Dive into a one-of-a-kind episode this week as I sit down with software industry leader and passionate fly fisherman, Tim Huckaby. Tim's career has led him to work with tech giants like Microsoft and hop on stage with legends like Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, but it's his adventures on the river and in the wild that truly inspire him. Facebook   Twitter   Instagram Love the show? Subscribe,  rate, review, and share! Sign up for my Newsletter  HERE I'd love to hear your feedback about the show! You can contact me here:  rick@ricksaez.com Show Notes What Happened: I didn't mean to create a world-famous fly. Honestly, I just wanted something that wouldn't fall apart mid-float. It started with a cheat. I jacked a foam-folding technique from Charlie Craven (legendary fly tier) and started riffing. I was fishing the Upper Kern, and those trout were demolishing grasshoppers. Like full-on buffet mode. So I tied up something massive—ugly from the top, perfect from below—and boom. The Kern River rainbows went nuts. I named it the Huck Hopper. Fast forward a few years: I'm fishing around the world. Behind guides' backs, I quietly swap in my Frankenfly. Next thing you know, they're demanding to know what it is. And I'm FedExing Huck Hoppers at 3 a.m. because some poor guy “needs ‘em for Patagonia.” I even spun up an e-comm site. “Nobody will buy them,” I thought. Wrong. Principle: Sometimes, what sets you apart isn't how polished your idea is—it's how deeply it solves a problem only insiders truly understand. Real traction often comes from obsession and imperfection—not slick branding or mass appeal. Transition: A lot of outdoor entrepreneurs and creators make the same mistake I almost did: thinking your thing has to be perfect or pretty before it's worth sharing. Or worse—waiting for permission. The truth? Your “ugly” prototype might be someone else's holy grail. That's why so many talented people stall out: they're waiting to be validated, to be “ready,” or for some guru to give them the green light. That's Why: That's why we brought Tim Huckabee onto the podcast—he's proof that your passion project doesn't have to be fancy to make waves. Whether you're into fly fishing, side-hustling, or building gear people actually want, this episode shows how relentless curiosity, a bit of rebellion, and a lot of river time can create something unforgettable. Call to Action (PAS-style): If you've been second-guessing your scrappy idea, overthinking every detail, or stuck in “not good enough” mode—this one's for you. Listen now to hear how Tim turned a back-of-the-boat experiment into a globally loved gear essential. Follow up with Tim: https://www.timhuckaby.com/

Ants are a hugely successful family of eusocial insects with over 14,000 modern species described. They are known from every continent except Antarctica and show a wide range of ecologies. Whilst many of us are familiar with their highly organised social structures and castes, there still remain a lot of public misconceptions about how their societies function. The evolutionary history of ants is equally as impressive, with roughly as many fossil ant species known as there are of dinosaurs! Since their appearance in the Cretaceous, several early lineages of ants (stem ants) have gone extinct. In this episode, we're joined by Dr Christine Sosiak of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology as we explore what some of these stem ants were like and ask how the different groups of ants fared over geological time.

In this episode, Jim talks with Louis O'Connor, founder of Strategic Metals Invest, about a little-known asset class that's playing an outsized role in energy, defense, and global manufacturing: rare earth and strategic metals. Louis breaks down how investors can position themselves ahead of the demand curve—and why most people have never heard of these assets. 3 Key Takeaways: Critical inputs, limited access. Strategic metals power everything from semiconductors to EVs and missile systems. But most investors are locked out. Direct ownership is now possible. Private investors can hold metals like gallium and hafnium in secure vaults—and sell directly to manufacturers. Geopolitics drives opportunity. China's control over the supply chain creates volatility, trade tension, and leverage for early movers. Most portfolios react to the market. This is a chance to get ahead of it. Rethinking Risk: How Strategic Guardrails Can Actually Empower Innovation - Abim Kolawole, Chief Audit Executive at Northwestern Mutual

What if audit wasn't just a watchdog—but a catalyst for innovation, trust, and long-term growth? And what can education learn from it?In this episode of The TechEd Podcast, Matt Kirchner sits down with Abim Kolawole, Chief Audit Executive at Northwestern Mutual, to explore how risk management, when done right, becomes a strategic advantage. Abim shares his remarkable journey—from growing up in Nigeria and watching Wall Street as a kid, to becoming a lawyer at the SEC, to now leading audit at one of America's most respected financial institutions. But this episode goes far beyond compliance. It's about how innovation and integrity can—and must—coexist. Abim breaks down how technology can accelerate outcomes only when deployed safely, how AI is reshaping how organizations detect and act on risk, and why relevance is the new currency for both businesses and educators.Listen to learn:Why tech is only an accelerant if you deliver it safelyHow AI helps businesses “listen for risk” and act with foresightWhat schools can learn from client-centric models in businessHow Northwestern Mutual is balancing tradition with transformationWhy critical thinking—not just tools—is the real superpower3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Audit is no longer just about compliance—it's about enabling innovation. Abim Kolawole views audit as a strategic partner that delivers foresight, insights, and confidence to help a company grow safely. By using data, analytics, and a future-focused mindset, internal audit can help organizations place smarter bets, not just avoid bad ones.2. Technology only accelerates value when it's implemented with trust and purpose. At Northwestern Mutual, cloud migration and emerging tech like AI are approached with a “safe by design” mindset that includes cross-functional vetting and intentional guardrails. Abim emphasizes that skipping this step puts long-term client trust—and company relevance—at risk.3. Education leaders can learn from the client-centric models used in business. Just like Northwestern Mutual redesigned the advisor and client experience using design thinking, educators must reimagine the student and teacher experience before introducing new tools. Critical thinking, not technology alone, is the foundation of a truly transformative education.Resources in this Episode:To learn more about Northwestern Mutual, visit: www.northwesternmutual.comCheck out the movie Wall Street, mentioned in this episodeFollow Abim on LinkedInConnect with Northwestern Mutual on Social Media:LinkedIn  |  X  |  Facebook  |  Instagram  |  YouTubeWe want to hear from you! Another market rally Monday, flirting again with all-time highs. While there is nothing overall concerning about the markets, they're always setting up for some kind of rotation. There are a few things to pay attention to now. The market is being primarily driven  by three sectors: Industrials, Transportation, and Technology. Those secotrs have been outperforming relative to the S&P. Technology has been leading the charge, of late; Industrials have also been posting well. Both are tied to the AI buildout. What will happen next, as these sectors become over bought, is money moving to risk-off areas, like Staples, which have been under-performing lately. Money doesn't leave the market, it just changes where it goes. There is a pretty big deviation between the risk-on and risk-off trades.    Hosted by RIA Chief Investment Strategist, Lance Roberts, CIO  Produced by Brent Clanton, Executive Producer ------- Watch today's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diYGZ_-lLMI&list=PLwNgo56zE4RAbkqxgdj-8GOvjZTp9_Zlz&index=1 ------- Articles mentioned in this report: "Is The Dollar Setting Up For A Comeback?" https://realinvestmentadvice.com/resources/blog/is-the-dollar-setting-up-for-a-comeback/ "Relative Returns Or Absolute.
