Send us Fan MailChris Hobson, CEO of Rare Beauty Brands, home to Patchology and Kate Somerville, breaks down the business of beauty: the insight that turned Old Spice around, what it now costs to build a brand, how to handle dupes, and the metrics founders should track.Who is Chris Hobson?He started a clothing brand in college in Canada, then joined Procter & Gamble in brand management, running Scope, Folgers Canada, Old Spice, and Secret before an MBA and a career building brands. "As a brand manager, you get trained as sort of the mini general manager of your brand."How did he turn around Old Spice?By finding an insight instead of denying the brand's age. Research showed a woman would borrow her partner's deodorant from almost any brand except Old Spice. "We came up with this funny tongue in cheek positioning of Old Spice as the last bastion of masculinity." The brand went from a distant fifth to third in Canada, and the positioning went global.What makes consumers loyal to a beauty brand?Product quality first, emotional connection second. "When you get that magic of the consumer insight married to really high quality product, that's the foundation of a brand."What insight drives Patchology and Kate Somerville?Two very different ones. "The insight for a Patchology consumer is I want a moment of joy... the act of putting on the mask slows me down from my crazy day." The Kate Somerville consumer is buying certainty from a clinic with 20 years and 250,000 facials behind it.Should beauty brands chase trends?Only in ways authentic to the brand, though Hobson is candid about the pull. "The science is sort of suspect, but hey, it's a $10 million opportunity. How do we not do it?" Brands lose themselves when they go wholesale trend focused.Why did Patchology stop marketing its science?Because consumers buy results, not mechanisms. Hobson watched women's eyes glaze over at talk of ten times more ingredient delivery, then light up when the patches came off. "Turns out all she cares about is the better results."How long does it take to build a beauty brand?Longer than founders expect, now that ad costs have erased the cheap growth era. "You've got to be prepared to raise 10 to 20 million dollars at least, and spend 10 to 20 years on it. That's the new reality."Why is it harder for indie brands to scale now?The economics of attention changed. "The advertising prices have come up and the ROI has come down, and so it's harder for young brands to make that leap."How should a brand respond to dupes?By owning the category so copies feed demand back to the original. "When a brand copies us, a rising tide lifts all boats." Patchology is up over 20 percent this year.Do dupes steal customers from the original?Within limits set by price and psychology. "They're wearing it and they're knowing in their mind, I'm not really wearing Chanel." Hobson argues most of those consumers come back.Does getting into Target or Walmart grow a beauty brand?Not without demand behind it. "If you don't have the demand generation capability in place to move that product off the shelf... you're out." Accessibility is a high stakes strategy, not a shortcut.What metrics should new beauty founders track?Repeat purchase above all, measured by cohort rather than revenue share. "The way we make money as brands is repeat purchase... if I had to go out and acquire a customer every single time, I'd go out of business."What is the biggest business lesson of his career?People. Today's Headlines: Kash Patel scheduled a trip to Russia in October with no disclosed agenda or meeting list, which is a perfectly normal thing for the FBI director to do while leading an agency that investigates Russian interference. In tariff news, Trump dropped new tariffs on Canada — specifically cars, alcohol, cheese, and hockey sticks — on products covered by the USMCA trade deal he negotiated himself in 2020 and called "the best deal ever," though they don't kick in for 30 days so this is probably a stunt. Meanwhile, the cyclospora lettuce saga got weirder when the FDA announced the positive test on Taylor Farms lettuce was a "false positive" — conveniently after Taylor Farms donated a million dollars to Trump's super PAC in 2025, six days after the FDA delayed food traceability rules that would have applied to companies like Taylor Farms, and one day after Taylor Farms executives met with senior FDA officials before issuing their voluntary recall and blaming Taco Bell, so the whole thing smells like something other than lettuce. On ICE, the FBI will no longer investigate confrontations between ICE agents and civilians — essentially eliminating the only oversight ICE was ever exposed to — with responsibility for investigating ICE now falling to ICE itself, and traffic stops resuming less than 24 hours after DHS said they'd stop them. On a related press freedom note, the DOJ subpoenaed phone records of multiple New York Times journalists, at least two of their spouses, and one of their mothers, dating back to January 1st — long before their reporting on Trump's Qatari jet. A judge temporarily blocked the Paramount-Warner Brothers merger for two weeks, siding with 12 state attorneys general on antitrust grounds, which means Bari Weiss running CNN is on hold until at least August 3rd. On the election beat, Lindsey Graham's sister Darline — sworn in less than two weeks after her brother died — announced on Sean Hannity that she's running for the full six-year term, citing "inner peace," which is one way to process grief. And finally, on a genuinely positive note, Senator Andy Kim introduced MediKIDS, legislation that would automatically enroll every child at birth in health insurance through age 26, covering 4.4 million uninsured kids. Over the next few years, Northcott lured young victims to the property with the help of his teenage nephew, who he had taken from Canada under the guise of teaching him the family trade. Behind the chicken coops, he built one of the most disturbing crime scenes in California history. Steffi Friyia is an accredited Certified Music Therapist (MTA) and the current President of the Music Therapy Association of Ontario (MTAO).We're very excited to speak with Steffi about the #GetAMPEDForMusicTherapy campaign, a major Canadian advocacy initiative for music therapy. The #GetAMPED campaign involves music therapists across Canada coming together to call on provincial governments to formally recognize Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) as healthcare professionals, and requests that they be added to the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) Authorized Medical Practitioners (AMP) list in each province. This recognition would allow clients and families to claim music therapy as a medical expense on their taxes, increasing access and equity to services.We're thankful for Steffi and all other MTAs working towards this initiative to increase the recognition of music therapy across the country. Red, White & Blues FC | The World Cup Is Over and We're Not OkaySpain lifted the trophy, Argentina got what they deserved, FIFA gouged everybody blind — and we have to go back to just being Chelsea fans now.The World Cup's over, and Jason opened the show genuinely mourning the fact that he can't just be a fan of football anymore — he has to go back to being a fan of Chelsea. Before we get into it: yes, Morgan Rogers is coming to Chelsea, and no, we're not giving you our real take on that until Thursday's transfer roundup. Consider this the palate cleanser — one last love letter to a tournament that had no business being as good as it was. We both went in with expectations on the floor and walked out calling it an A+.Spain Were Just Better — One Goal the Entire TournamentWe're united as households on this one: shout out Spain. Daniel's big argument is the one he's been screaming at Blueco to copy since day one — you build from the back and you win by not letting the other team score. Spain conceded exactly one goal the whole tournament, ran a 19-year-old out at center back, let Unai Simón coast on one or two saves a game, and still found the goal when it mattered (that Nico Williams header back across for Ferran Torres was gorgeous). The final itself was a boring, ugly watch — Spain couldn't finish, Dibu Martínez put on one of the great World Cup final keeping performances and still lost because Argentina did, in Jason's words, absolutely jack all night. They didn't register a real shot in the first 90. They deserved nothing, and Enzo Fernández taking one for the team with that cartoon second yellow felt like poetry.FIFA, Infantino, and the Great Ticket HeistHere's where we go long and angry. Trump 80-year-old-manned the trophy presentation and nobody — not even Infantino sprinting back across the stage — could get him off it. That was the only prediction we nailed all tournament. From there it's the ticket scandal: FIFA running its own resale site for the first time, a whole Belgium-fan section mysteriously going on sale the day before the US–Belgium match at $1,600 a pop against a $60 face value, tier-two seats quietly getting “expanded” into what were really tier-three views. Canada forced FIFA to relist; the US gave them carte blanche. We put Infantino on a pace to out-corrupt Sepp Blatter and genuinely mean it.Funflation and the Fans Who Paid AnywayThe part that actually depresses us: people paid. Stadiums were full. And every dollar those fans coughed up just teaches FIFA it can charge more in four years — it's not if prices go up, it's how much. Jason walks through the “painted doors” idea (companies A/B testing what you'll tolerate) and “funflation,” the creeping cost of doing literally anything fun, from World Cup tickets to Ticketmaster concerts to $100 parking and $100 subway rides to a stadium built in a swamp you can't walk to. We admit it hit us personally — we'd planned to go for a couple years and priced ourselves out rather than be “World Cup broke” for the next two. Great tournament. FIFA gets zero credit for it.The Third-Place Classic, the Booth Wars, and Closing the Book on Messi & RonaldoThe stuff we loved: England vs. France in the third-place game, a ten-goal exhibition that turned into pure competitive pride once the players got going — Jason calls it better than the final. England going into the Azteca and beating Mexico. Cape Verde drawing Spain and going home heroes. On the booth: all hail Rebecca Lowe, and please, Paramount, give us Zlatan and Thierry Henry full-time and keep Alexi Lalas as far from a microphone as humanly possible. Stu Holden gets both barrels for narrating the obvious as if he has inside knowledge, and for the whole crew being so unready for a boring final they filled time talking about the weather. We close on the legends aging out — Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar waving goodbye while Mbappé's already passed them with two World Cups likely still ahead — plus the eternal USMNT reality check (Pulisic showed up for one game and vanished; stop with the Captain America stuff) and a quick debate over whether third-place stats should count.
