In July of 1917 a pioneering landscape painter paddled out onto Canoe Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park and never returned. His death was initially ruled an accident, but in the following decades peculiar “evidence” and claims from the locals raised a lot of questions. Theories began to arise that maybe it wasn't an accident after all. Tom Thomson's death may have happened nearly 100 years ago, but it remains one of Canada's most enduring mysteries. But she wasn't really alone. Wild creatures became her friends, and she was constantly the recipient of neighborly kindness from folks on the mainland. Laura Lee's 1922 book about her winter on the island is now considered a classic of Canadian literature, and a vivid portrait of time gone by. What happens when low salmon prices stop being a short-term problem and start reshaping how the entire industry thinks about risk? In this episode, we dig into Q3 financial results from the publicly traded salmon companies, not just to recap the numbers, but to unpack what they're really signaling beneath the surface. We explore widening gaps in EBIT per kilo across regions, why Chile stands out while Norway, Scotland, Canada, and Iceland struggle in very different ways, and how persistent price pressure is forcing companies to prioritize cost control over growth. The conversation goes deeper into the tradeoffs this creates: where cost-cutting shows up quickly through sea lice decisions, where it hides longer-term risk through disease and biology, and why the push toward “control” via land-based and semi-closed systems hasn't yet translated into stronger economics. The result is a clear-eyed look at whether the industry is truly buying predictability or simply shifting where risk shows up. Download the full Q3 2025 report here. For more aquaculture insights head to our Fish n' Bits blog.

Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Federal News Bulletin from CIC news release. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.News release December 8, 2025—Toronto—In support of the Budget 2025 commitment to fill critical labour gaps with high-skilled talent, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Maggie Chi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, today announced new measures to support Canada's health care system by making the path to permanent residence simpler for international doctors.  As part of these measures, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will create a new Express Entry category for international doctors with at least one year of Canadian work experience in an eligible occupation, gained within the last three years. These doctors are already working in Canada on a temporary basis, helping patients and contributing to our health care system. We're giving these doctors a clear pathway to permanent residence in Canada to fill critical health workforce gaps, while helping support reliable care and a stable health system for Canadians. Invitations to apply for the new Express Entry category will be issued in early 2026.  The Government of Canada will reserve 5,000 federal admission spaces for provinces and territories to nominate licensed doctors with job offers. These spaces are in addition to the annual Provincial Nominee Program allocations. Doctors who are nominated will receive expedited 14-day work permit processing, allowing them to work while awaiting permanent residence.  These measures also support our broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, which aims to strengthen the jobs and industries that drive our economy and communities, while helping restore balance and long-term sustainability in our immigration system.   | You can always access past news from the Canadian Federal Government by visiting this link: https://myar.me/tag/fed/. In the wake of Sunday's terrorist attack on Australia's Jewish community, Canadian Jews are feeling angry, scared, mournful and defiant, with some seriously considering moving to Israel. As of Sunday night EST, the death toll in New South Whales had risen to 15 victims, including the host of the Bondi Beach candle-lighting event, Chabad Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who has deep ties to Toronto and Ottawa. Meanwhile, officials believe up to 60 other festival-goers were wounded, including the rabbi's wife, a mother of five. One of the two shooters was also killed. In Canada, rabbis and Jewish leaders urged their community to push back against terror, show extra pride and make an effort to attend public candle-lighting ceremonies this Hanukkah. But some fear Canada is equally ripe for an attack like Australia's, due to the failure of public officials to stop hate speech and protests on our streets featuring chants like “Globalize the Intifada”. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast with Ellin Bessner, you'll hear what Jewish Canada sounded like while mourning Jews on the other side of the planet. We're joined by Richard Marceau, a senior official with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, who just returned from an antisemitism conference in Australia six days prior to the attack; award-winning Canadian author Sidura Ludwig, who lined up early to buy special sufganiyot at a Thornhill bakery; Sara Lefton of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto; Rabbi Levi Gansburg of Chabad on Bayview, who knew the murdered rabbi; and political leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, Toronto mayor Olivia Chow and cabinet minister Evan Solomon. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sayan sits down with Alisha Esmail from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to unpack a founder truth most people avoid. Burnout is not a badge, it's a bottleneck. Alisha shares how burning out three times forced her to rebuild her business approach with stronger systems, clearer priorities, and a “harmony over balance” mindset. They break down her Five Tanks Framework (emotional, mental, physical, relational, spiritual) and a practical daily check-in to spot depletion before it snowballs. They also get real about using AI and automation to buy back time without losing the human edge. If you're building a company, leading a team, or just tired of the hustle narrative, this one is a clean reset. About the Guest: Alisha Esmail is a purpose-led founder behind one of Canada's recognized coffee brands and a builder working at the intersection of AI, human performance, and sustainability. She teaches founders how to reduce burnout through systems, clarity, and her Five Tanks Framework. Key Takeaways: Burnout repeats when recovery is treated like a break, not a redesign of how you operate. “Harmony” beats “balance”. Some seasons require intensity, but the system has to pay you back with time later. The line between healthy intensity and overextension is context. Most “emergencies” can wait till tomorrow. Use the “three cards” rule. Limit how often you pull people into after-hours work so you don't burn out the team. Five Tanks Framework is universal: emotional, mental, physical, relational, spiritual. The refill method can vary by personality and season. A fast daily audit works: draw five circles, label the tanks, score each 1 to 10, then act on the lowest tank first. Empty tanks show up as short temper, conflict, anxiety, spiraling thoughts, and feeling out of control. AI should not replace thinking. It should remove repetitive tasks so founders stay in strategy, creativity, and leadership. Practical AI win: rewrite intense messages to reduce conflict and prevent “emotional shrapnel” in relationships. Scarcity is not a reason to self-destruct. It can be a forcing function for creativity and smarter leverage. Today we unpack the education experiences of students from the former Soviet Union who have migrated to Canada. My guests are Sarfaroz Niyozov, Stephen Bahry and Max Antony-Newman. For the past few years, they have been working on a research project that has explored the experiences of the high school children with post-Soviet backgrounds in the Greater Toronto Area. The research project strives to improve the education experiences of this under-researched, often misunderstood group of Canadian youth, their parents, and communities who come from the countries of the former Soviet Union. Sarfaroz Niyozov is an Associate Professor in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, where Stephen Bahry is a sessional lecturer. Max Antony-Newman is a lecturer in education at the university of Glasgow. Various articles from their research project will soon published. With stunning lyricism, Somia Sadiq's Gajarah (GFB, 2025) tells the story of a fearless woman torn between two worlds-Pakistan and Canada-whose life is upended by sexual violence. Emahn is big haired, mischievous, and larger than life. Born in the Arabian Gulf, she spends extended summers with her grandparents, aunties, and cousins on the rooftops of Lahore. But tucked away beneath her spirited exterior, Emahn carries the weight of childhood trauma. When she marries and moves to Canada, she quickly learns the art of navigating multiple realities and compartmentalizing memories of the world she left behind, even as she clings to the stories of her home. She is resilient; she is driven; she is unbreakable. Almost. When tragedy strikes, Emahn must draw upon the deepest wells of her ancestral strength to survive, even if it means revisiting her gutting past. Braided together with prose, poetry, and mythical parables, Gajarah confronts the realities of forgiveness and justice, and asks what it means to belong to a land that so forcefully pushes one away. The move came Saturday through an executive order. It directs both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to form separate task forces, each charged with taking “all necessary and appropriate actions” to look into the food supply chain. That includes examining whether foreign ownership in food-related industries is driving up grocery prices or posing a national or economic security risk. In the order, Trump said anti-competitive behavior — especially by companies under foreign control — threatens the stability and affordability of America's food supply. He pointed to past settlements in which some companies paid millions to resolve price-fixing allegations. The administration, he said, intends to determine whether such practices are raising the cost of living for Americans and whether they pose any security concerns. The President also said that if Attorney General Pam Bondi uncovers criminal collusion, the Justice Department could pursue criminal charges, including convening grand juries. The task forces are required to provide their first updates to Congress within 180 days, and again within the first year of the investigation. This executive order follows Trump's earlier directive for the DOJ to immediately investigate alleged collusion and price manipulation among U.S. meatpackers. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Attorney General Bondi voiced support for the effort, even as reports surfaced that a previous DOJ probe into beef-packer concentration, launched in 2020, ended without charges. According to the Wall Street Journal, Rollins, along with trade adviser Peter Navarro and Homeland Security Adviser Stephen Miller, has recently met with Trump to discuss rising beef prices. I was having breakfast with my son, daughter-in-law and grand child earlier in the week. He is 25, she is 24, and baby is 5 weeks old. They're both pretty successful in their jobs - both in sales, on commission, so very much performance-based - and they both work very hard. They are ambitious. They want a big house with a big family, and plenty of money to live off. Pretty normal ambitions, really, and once upon a time not so impossible to achieve.I'm extremely proud of them both for having gone against the grain and had their first child so young. I'm also proud of how they have both adapted to parenthood. They live with me, so I see every day how utterly devoted they are, how much effort they put in, how they are learning and flourishing. The way Millie has thrown herself into motherhood and totally dedicated herself to her child is a thing to behold. Breast feeding on demand, everything. It really is a joy to see.Because they've started a family young, there is a very real chance they will go on to have a very big family. They both say that is what they want. My son, Samuel, has now gone back to work, while Millie is on maternity leave. But having both made several successful deals, and with a backlog of outstanding commission coming payable too, they found themselves between them paying £26,000 of taxes last month - 50% of the £53,000 they earned was taken, when you factor in the student loans they have to repay. (They might get some of that back at the end of the year). To earn that kind of money in a month at such a young age is just brilliant - I see how hard both of them work, the hours they put in, early morning after early morning, late night after late night, the persistence - and I'm proud of them. It is not easy. None of their university colleagues are doing anything like as well, at least in financial terms. With the bonanza month they both had, they could have paid off significant chunks of their student loans. But no such luck. The tax man cometh first.Meanwhile, they are so far from being able to buy a house for their young family - not just in the area they grew up, but anywhere in Greater London - it's a joke. I like having them live with me, don't get me wrong, but the fact that even a couple as successful as this are miles away from owning a property of reasonable enough size to start a family makes my blood boil.We live in a Victorian terraced house in South London that was built 150 years ago for a working-class man and his family. Yet a working-class man could never afford to buy this house now, even though it's 150 years old - never mind the highest-earning couple in their peer group. The most commonly given reason why people do not have bigger families earlier in life is expense. And what is the greatest expense in your life? Altogether now, “your government”. By far and away. Lower that expense and people will have bigger families again, earlier in life. (Even the cost of housing itself - the second biggest expense in a typical life - would come down with less government - less planning permission, less building regulation, less market intervention for political ends, less fiat and so on).Quite a few of the houses in our street are owned by the council. An old lady who lived in one of them recently died, and her house was given to a Somali family. So the taxes that Samuel and Millie are paying, and would like to have been able to use towards their own family, are being used to house another family not just from another country, but another continent never mind another culture. I've no doubt their needs are great. They get the house they need. We pay. How many more families not from the UK are we expected to sponsor - and delay/minimize our own procreation for?We are literally taxing our own to enable to the procreation of others. As I say in the title, we are taxing ourselves into oblivion.“Have you ever known taxes to actually go down?” My son asked me.“Well,” I said. “They came down a bit in 1980s under Thatcher”.It might feel relatively recent to me, but that was a good 15 years - half a generation - before my son was born in 2000. And even under Thatcher and Reagan, it's worth remembering, the state actually grew. The state continued to grow in the 90s and 00s, and, by the time you factor in all the various stealth taxes that got introduced, not least fiscal drag - perhaps the most odious of the lot - as well as currency debasement, so did taxes. Now, because of fiscal drag, you see teachers paying higher rates of Income Tax. It's not in any way exceptional in London to earn more than 50 grand. You haven't got a hope of having any kind of lifestyle, if you don't. I dread to think how many Londoners - those that work hard at least - are paying higher rates of tax. And for what? What chance do these people have of buying a home and starting a family? And all this money is being taken to spent on what, exactly? Not potholes, that's for sure.I think the question my son was really asking was, “Is there any chance taxes come down?”Well, if you look at Britain since World War II - actually since World War I - the growth in the state has been relentless and inexorable. So the rise in taxes we must pay has been inexorable. I'm not just talking about Income Tax. As I say, I'm talking about all the stealth taxes and debasement of currency as well. Is there any realistic chance they'll come down? Liz Truss only tried to slash government spending by two and a half percent. And look what that did. It's incredible to think that at the turn of the 20th century taxation - or the state - amounted to less than 10% of GDP.Even if Reform were to win the next election, how would they realistically cut state spending by more than a couple or three percent? The institutional resistance - the blob, the civil service, the quangos, the media - would fight them at every turn. In short, taxes are unlikely to come down by anything meaningful. We cannot get this country purged until the currency collapses. That's the only way I see it happening. It's very sad. If you live in a Third World Country such as the UK, I urge you to own gold or silver. The pound is going to be further devalued. The bullion dealer I recommend is The Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. More here.My son, who is not particularly political, observes the absurdity of it: many people who build wealth, the most productive and talented, are leaving because of high taxes, and we replace net contributors with net takers. The country is systematically driving away the people who create value while importing those who consume it. It's economic suicide by design. As readers of Daylight Robbery will know, I regard taxation as the best measure of freedom there is. The more heavily taxed societies - where obviously there is limited economic freedom - tend to be the societies where there is limited freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of thought, freedom to experiment and all the rest of it.Freedom of movement in the UK is limited by the cost of movement - whether it's transport costs, petrol costs, Stamp Duty, fines, charges, new mileage taxes - all reduce movement. They're all a tax. There might not be laws preventing movement in the way there once were if you were, say, a serf, but taxes give you a similar outcome. They restrict movement - and thus possibility - because people cannot afford to move. You don't need me to demonstrate how freedom of both thought and speech are being attacked. The two-tier justice system sees people committing violent crimes getting released early - indeed often not even getting convicted - while people who just said words get locked up.I'm sorry to say it, but I don't think even Farage and Reform can turn this one around, particularly when Farage is watering a lot of his policies down in order to give the media less to smear him with, and make himself more electorally palatable. Starmer did something not so totally dissimilar. And if something should happen to Farage, what then? What would Reform be without him? I like Richard Tice a lot, but there is not exactly a huge queue of people waiting to fill Farage's boots.Tell someone about this great article. So I come back to my point that I've made on these pages many times. If you are young and wanting to build a good life for yourself, and you want to be rewarded for the hard work you put in, your chance of doing that in the UK is limited. You're best off going somewhere else. Sorry to sound negative. There are many things to be positive about in this world, but the future of taxation and freedom in the UK is not one of them.Remember the golden rule of Daylight Robbery: fix taxation, everything else follows. But there is no sign of us doing that.Until next time,DominicICYMI, here is this week's commentary - also prepping for the North American tax loss trade. And, finally, I appeared on the mighty Tom Woods Show this week. I love Tom, and he is fast becoming one of my best buddies. Here are links to the interview on Apple podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. This is a public episode.

The announcement follows a November meeting with King and members of the Tribal Alliance Against Frauds, a US-based group dedicated to exposing people who falsely claim American Indian heritage. And they discuss Elaine Miles, an Indigenous actor best known for her roles in “Northern Exposure,” “Smoke Signals,” “Wyvern” and “The Last of Us”. While she was walking, 4 men wearing masks and vests with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement labels stepped out of two black SUVs with no front plates and pressed her for her ID. She handed them her tribal ID from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. The agents called it "FAKE". Federal government agencies recognize tribal ID as a valid form of identification, and Miles has used it to travel back and forth to Canada and Mexico without any issues - until now. His new book is Burned by Billionaires: How Concentrated Wealth and Power Are Ruining Our Lives and Planet. There's a number of examples of how we could create a decency floor that many societies have (including, obviously, Canada) that you can't fall below those levels. Same with education, access to education. These are universal opportunity programs that good societies maintain. You raise the floor and you create a level playing field. But the reality is we're not going to get any of those if we don't address this concentration of wealth and power, which is essentially blocking us from moving toward these reforms we're talking about.Chuck CollinsSarah Moskowitz is Executive Director of the Citizens Utility Board, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group with the mission to fight for the rights of customers of investor-owned electric, gas and telecom utilities across Illinois. That's part of what we're really proud of here at CUB Illinois is that you can reach a human. Glenn starts the show by going through the history of Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying program, which has become a grotesque injustice. Glenn opens up the phones for callers to discuss various issues, including one caller who's fighting the state of New York from taking over her farmland to install solar panels. Glenn warns that Texas could soon face rolling blackouts as power grids are overwhelmed. Glenn gives an update on Jolene, a Canadian woman who needs life-saving surgery. Forgetting the autopen scandal, does the president have the power to issue immunity deals under the guise of pardons? Glenn lays out why Canada's health care is such a mess. Glenn gets a call from a listener who calls him out for referring to “George AI” as a “he” and not an “it.” “The Case for Christ” author Lee Strobel joins to discuss his newest book, “The Case for Christmas,” which dives into the evidence of the birth of Jesus Christ.
