Wings For The Thought Bird, 2500 DelMonte Street: The Oral History of Tower Records

“I don't think I ever recovered from Tower going away” Zev Feldman tells us towards the end of this episode. If you worked at Tower Records on the East Coast, you most certainly worked with Zev Feldman. Starting as a salesman for Polygram Distribution, young Zev covered Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. A visit from Zev Feldman was full of energy, enthusiasm and a pure music fan's zeal. Later Zev had a stint with Rhino Records as the Northeastern Classical & Jazz Sales ManagerWhen Tower Records went away and the music business tried to figure itself out (has it succeeded?) Zev landed at Concord Music Group as a National Sales and Marketing Director for catalog recordings in Los Angeles. In 2009 Zev moved to Resonance Records where he was given free reign to search out previously unreleased recordings by some of the legends of Jazz. Zev's releases have been critical and sales smashes, so much so that he was elevated to the position of Co President of Resonance Records. As each ensuing project dominated the jazz landscape, Zev was hired as a consulting producer of archival and historical recordings for Blue Note Records in 2018 working with Don Was. But it doesn't stop there. Zev Feldman is also a consulting producer with Elemental Music, Sunset Blvd Records, Real Gone Music  and Reel To Real Recordings. Very recently Zev was named Best Producer in the 70th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll. Throughout our conversation Zev discusses growing up in Record Stores, working for Universal Distribution and doing all of his work in Record Stores, he explains the complicated process of putting these gorgeous jazz box sets together and how brick and mortar retail is always the jumping off point for releasing these labors of love. He also tells us about his regular visits to the Tower Records stores in Dublin Ireland and Japan  and the feelings invoked. Finally Zev tells us how Tower's demise hurt him personally.

This time on The Children's Hour, we have a show on Patriotism & Leadership. What does it mean to be patriotic, according to some bilingual 8th graders at Albuquerque's Washington Middle School? Then, we travel across Albuquerque to Adobe Acres Elementary, where kids describe what makes for a good leader, and what qualities diminish the job. We also learn about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance. This show is mixed with excellent music. Patriotism And Leadership titleartistalbumdurationlabel Whose Flag? (feat. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Casey Abrams became an overnight celebrity in January 2011, when he was selected to be a contestant on the popular televised talent competition American Idol.   ******LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND SUBSCRIBE!!! www.richredmond.com/listen   Abrams was born on February 12, 1991, in Austin, Texas. Abrams' family lived in Illinois for several years before settling in Idyllwild, California, where his father taught filmmaking at the Idyllwild Arts Academy. Abrams became a student at Idyllwild, where he studied both jazz and classical music, with emphasis on the double bass and piano. In addition to jazz, Abrams developed a fondness for classic jazz and pop vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and James Taylor, and began studying singing as well as instrumental performance. When the producers of American Idol began holding auditions for their tenth season, Abrams appeared at the tryouts in Austin, and his version of Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor" impressed the judges, who made him one of the 24 semi-finalists who took part in the televised competition in Los Angeles. Abrams' warm, engaging style and likable personality made him a favorite with American Idol's viewers as well as the judges, as did his eclectic choices of material, ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Nirvana. When Abrams fared poorly in the voting after reaching the Top 11, the show's judges made the rare choice to "save" him, intervening to keep him in the running after an impressive performance of Elton John's "Your Song." However, four weeks later, Abrams was finally voted off the show, coming in sixth place while Scotty McCreery came in first. After making a number of television appearances and taking part in the annual American Idol concert tour, Abrams made his recording debut in the fall of 2011, when he and Haley Reinhart (another season ten contestant) recorded a duet version of the seasonal favorite "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that was issued as a single. In January 2012, Concord Music Group announced they'd signed Abrams to a record deal, and his self-titled debut album was released in June 2012.   Beginning in 2014, Abrams became involved with Scott Bradlee's jazz-themed covers ensemble Postmodern Jukebox, joining the group on several tours and recording fan favorite covers with them like a New Orleans' take on Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" and a version of Haddaway's "What Is Love" done in the style of the Isley Brothers. His ebullient vocal delivery and double bass chops made him a strong fit for the band, even as he continued to record his own music, including the 2016 EP Tales from the Gingerbread House. 2018 saw the release of Abrams' third full-length, I Put a Spell on You, while he dipped back into his roots the following year with the aptly titled effort Jazz.   Some Things That Came Up:  Eve of Destruction w/ Cyndi Lauper Playing on American Idol Rich's playing near Steven Tyler and JLo on AI Getting emotionally attached to an acting role Playing with Jack Black on AI Putting a bass track to "Kiss" by Prince "Make Out" performance    Follow Casey: www.caseybassy.com @casseybassy   The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. What could be more spooky than a pandemic Halloween? The Kids Crew are joined by Drs. Bop 'n Pop, who are on a mission to help normalize lifesaving public health behaviors for children and families through their songs and videos. We get an update from the doctors about how Covid can be contained and we find out how to have a safe Halloween, in spite of the pandemic. Plus the kids in the Extinction Diaries update us on the arctic caribou, a creature bound to its fragile environment. Hear plenty more spooky music from Kymberly Stewart, Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats, fleaBITE, Kid Pan Alley, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, The Happy Racers, Vince Guaraldi, and Johnny & the Raindrops.   The Children's Hour is supported by the Cultural Services Department and the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund at the City of Albuquerque. “Tell me again a million times,Who I am in heaven’s eyes,” sings Jillian Edwards, a native of Texas now pro singer-songwriter living in Nashville with husband, Will Chapman, and daughter Willow Faye. With songs placed on episodes of Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, and Citibank Ads, Edwards is in her fifth year as a signed songwriter to mega- publishing company Concord Music Group. Her 2014 album, Daydream, topped iTunes’ Singer/Songwriter chart and landed at No. 6 on Billboard’s New Artist chart.  Her new album “Meadow” was executive-produced by five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning artist, Steven Curtis Chapman, who happens to be Jillian’s father-in-law. “Meadow” features newly co-written songs with other amazing songwriters; David Leonard, Jonathan Smith, Peter Groenwald, Josh Bronleewe, Tony Wood and Jessie Early. In this episode, John Chisum and Jillian talk about the challenges of being a touring musical family (her husband, Will Chapman, is the drummer for indie rock band Colony House), whether or not the intimacy with God portrayed in her songs is a constant in her life, and how Jillian stays creative despite the demands of songwriting, touring, and building a family as a young wife and mother. “Jillian is delightful,” shares Chisum. “This episode will give any aspiring singer-songwriter a bird’s-eye peek into what it’s really like, even for someone as successful as Jillian and the Chapman family. I love this interview and I know it’s going to be encouraging to a lot of people who hear it.” Jillian Edwards is a rarity you don’t often find... a pure heart, a fresh voice, and someone who’s transparent enough to share the real struggles behind making music as a career. You can find Jillian Edwards on iTunes, Spotify, and at jillianedwards.com.

In December 2015, the Smithsonian called on rock and roll lovers around the world to collect photos and stories of their favorite moments in music. Fans dug through attics, basements, closets, shoeboxes, digital cameras, and photo albums to post great rock shots to rockandroll.si.edu. From Woodstock to the Whisky a Go Go, from Lollapalooza to the 9:30 Club, and all the rockin' places in between, fans overwhelmingly responded with their favorite rock and roll moments. Iconic artists ranging from the Who to Nirvana to Chuck Berry to the Jimi Hendrix and many more are celebrated here. There are early photographs of everyone from Run-D.M.C. to the Runaways, and contemporary shots of some of the biggest names in music, including Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, and Metallica. Presented together, these photographs create a kaleidoscopic history of the artists, the musical styles, the venues, the concerts, and the fans. This is rock and roll as it has never been seen before. BILL BENTLEY is the former A&R Director at Concord Music Group and Vice President of Warner Bros. Records. He is also an AmSat certified Alexander Technique Teacher and completed that training at the Northern California Center for the Alexander Technique (Redwood City, CA) in 2011. Pete is a student of internationally recognized Yamaha Trumpet Artist and Clinician: Bobby Shew. He has also studied trumpet privately with 25 teachers, including: Mario Guineri, Roy Poper, Jon Lewis, and Steve Braet (who were all students of James Stamp). Formerly on the Jazz Faculty at Sonoma State University (1999-2011), Pete has been on the at Santa Rosa Junior College Faculty for over 20 years, where he has taught Jazz Courses, Music Fundamentals, and Applied Music (Trumpet). He has also been an Adjunct Faculty Member for Pacific Union College and Napa Valley College. He has been and active Private Trumpet Instructor for 34 years. He has transcribed over 400 Jazz Trumpet Solos as well as numerous Original Jazz Compositions and Arrangements by various Blue Note Artists. Pete's Transcriptions of Miles Davis' Solos were included as bonus material with the 2006 and 2009 re-releases of the 50's Prestige Sessions by the Concord Music Group. Under the guidance of James Newton (Downbeat Poll Winner-Jazz Flute), Pete transcribed and arranged portions of Duke Ellington's "Queen's Suite". This work, previously unreleased, was performed by the Danish National Radio Orchestra in 1991. As a student, Pete had the good fortune to perform with, and arranged for, ensembles featuring such well-known jazz artists as Bobby Shew, Charlie Haden, James Newton, Red Calendar, Bruce Forman, Tom Scott, Carl Fontana, Joe Williams, Albert Heath, Ernie Watts, and Roscoe Mitchell. In addition to performing regularly in a variety of musical settings which include Orchestral, Theater, Dance, and Brass groups, Pete also plays with his own Jazz Quintet (the Blue Note Collective). He has appeared on several albums by local artists including: Mel Graves' "Ear Shot", Bonnie Brooks' “You are the Song in Me”,and Steve Wolf's “Joy Button”. For the past 31 years, Pete has served as the Racetrack Bugler on the Northern California Fair Circuit, performing each summer for Fairs in Alameda, Humboldt, Sonoma, Solano, and San Joaquin County, as well as the Sacramento State Fair, and in the “off season”, for Cal Expo Harness Racing. SAXOPHONIST RICHARD ELLIOT CELEBRATES HIS FUNK AND R&B ROOTS ON SUMMER MADNESS When tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot began preparing Summer Madness, his follow-up to 2014’s critically acclaimed Lip Service, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. First and foremost, it had to be funky. “When I was growing up in the ’70s and first learning to play the saxophone,” he says, “I was mostly attracted to instrumentally based R&B and to jazz that had R&B roots. This record definitely goes down that path, leaning more on the funk side.” He also knew precisely who he wanted to accompany him on the new music. “I wanted to involve my band,” Elliot says. “A lot of artists tour with a group of musicians, and then when it’s time to make a record they hook up with a producer and go into the studio and use completely different people that maybe they’ve never even met before. I feel that if you’re lucky enough to have a regular group of musicians that you work with, and you don’t draw on their talent and their inspirations, you’re short-changing yourself.” Summer Madness, set for release on September 9, 2016 via Heads Up, a division of Concord Music Group, is a new kind of Richard Elliot recording. For one thing, the cast includes two other horn men augmenting Elliot’s signature sax work: trumpeter/trombonist Rick Braun, who also produced the album and, on several tracks, baritone saxophonist Curt Waylee. Most importantly though, the music was created from scratch as Elliot and his handpicked musicians formulated and honed their ideas in the studio, with Braun’s ultra-capable guidance. For Elliot, recruiting the additional players and having the entire band—plus a well-respected veteran producer help him shape the music—was integral to the project’s success.
