Late last month, President Trump announced that the United States would be restarting nuclear weapons tests after a break of over 30 years. We've since learned that they won't be the explosive kind of tests, but this sent us down a rabbit hole — where we found a story about dinosaurs, Carl Sagan, and nuclear war. Because there was a moment in the not-so-distant past when we learned what drove the dinosaurs extinct... and that discovery, made during the Cold War, may have helped save humans from the same fate. This episode originally published in March 2025.Guests:David Sepkoski, Thomas M. We've all done it — used a big fancy word to sound smarter or more impressive. But does it actually work? Research says no. In fact, the secret to sounding intelligent and confident has nothing to do with big words at all. I'll explain what is far more powerful. https://www.businessinsider.com/use-simple-language-to-sound-smarter-2015-9 Maps are fascinating. Did you know that early maps were not made for navigation at all, and a lot of modern maps are filled with mistakes and distortions that frustrate entire countries? Jay Foreman, co-host of the hit YouTube series Map Men (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfxy4_sBQdxy3A2lvl-y3qWTeJEbC_QCp) joins me to uncover the strange, surprising, and often controversial world of mapmaking — and why maps still shape how we see the world. Jay is author of the book This Way Up: When Maps Go Wrong (And Why It Matters) (https://amzn.to/49gSlrk). Everyone remembers a time when they wish they had been more courageous. They wish they had spoken up, took a risk, or made a bold move. But what separates courage from recklessness? Harvard Business School professor Ranjay Gulati, author of How to Be Bold: The Surprising Science of Everyday Courage (https://amzn.to/42Tmg52), explains how to tap into genuine courage when it matters most — and why bravery often looks different than you think. Finally, have you ever noticed that almost every zipper in your life works flawlessly? That's no accident. One company dominates the global zipper market — and their story is a master class in precision, persistence, and quality. Listen as I reveal how this quiet manufacturing giant came to control nearly every zipper on Earth. https://ykkamericas.com/our-history/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Sumichrast's Wren and Nava's Wren are both sooty-brown songbirds of southern Mexico. They both live in tropical forests where limestone outcrops provide a natural amphitheatre to show off their vocal feats. Yet the two have very different songs and are never found in the same place. Though scientists once thought they were the same species, genetic studies eventually proved that the two wrens are distinct — each with their own way to serenade their forest homes.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? What if space and time aren't real, and consciousness is the true fabric of the universe? In this mind-expanding conversation of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Dr. Donald Hoffman, pioneering cognitive scientist and author of The Case Against Reality, breaks down the revolution currently shaking science to its core. Could everything we experience — even space and time — be just part of a virtual interface our minds use to survive? Dr. Hoffman explains why consciousness (not matter) might be fundamental, what could exist beyond space-time, and why merging science and spirituality may be the only way to solve the Hard Problem of Consciousness. He also breaks down why: - Reality may just be what we perceive through a VR headset - Thinking you are your body could be one of humanity's greatest dangers - AI will never truly be conscious - Consciousness doesn't arise from physical processes, but might create them - Darwin's Theory of Evolution may suggest our world isn't real at all - Technology could be clouding our ability to perceive God - Recognizing a higher consciousness naturally leads to compassion and love for others - Building a scientific framework for spirituality could allow science to finally confirm what mystics have always known - His mathematical model of consciousness may reveal a collective mind & even prove the existence of God - His theory of the observer could unlock real magic: time travel, instant knowledge downloads, limb regeneration, and more We may have discovered the first layer of the Simulation's software; once we understand it, can we manipulate it to create magic? But with this potential power comes danger — if we unlock reality's source code, what happens next? Dr. Hoffman believes that if science proves consciousness is fundamental, confirming spirituality itself, the impact on humanity will be unlike anything we've ever seen. If consciousness really is the code behind reality, this might be the most important conversation of our lifetime. Don't miss it! If we ever meet intelligent extraterrestrials, will we even be able to talk about physics? Physicist Daniel Whiteson of UC Irvine and cartoonist Andy Warner join Sarah Al-Ahmed to explore one of science’s strangest and most profound questions: if alien civilizations exist, would their understanding of the Universe look anything like ours? Their new book, “Do Aliens Speak Physics?”, discusses the nature of knowledge itself, asking whether math and physics are truly universal, or if even our most “objective” truths are shaped by our human perspective. Together, they consider what it would take to communicate with alien intelligence and how humor and illustration can make those big cosmic ideas feel surprisingly down-to-Earth. Then, stick around for What’s Up with Bruce Betts, as we discuss how difficult it is to explain physics to humans, let alone extraterrestrial life. We explore what glucose spikes really mean, why time-in-range and variability matter more than a single peak, and how stress, sleep, and even eating speed affect your numbers. We cover carb timing, meal sequencing, post-meal walks, creatine, why under-fueling can make exercise spikes worse, and much more so you can keep glucose working for your performance and overall health.Liz McKinney, CNS, LDN, heads up the clinical nutrition team at Nutrisense. Today, Michael talks about the art, science, and practice of meditation where he addresses these questions—and so much more—followed by an extended guided meditation session.  Highlights include: -A clear definition of meditation: paying undistracted attention to Reality and being present with our thoughts, sensations, and emotions without resisting or enhancing them -The benefits of meditation: less anxiety and reactivity; more clarity, creativity, resilience, and Source-led decision making; better sleep, balanced blood pressure, immune support, and neuro-regeneration through consistent practice -Breaking myths like "my mind's too busy" to meditate—why busyness is exactly why we meditate and observing "thinking-ness" instead of fighting it -Why meditation is a universal human practice for everyone—parents, athletes, teachers, leaders—not just monks or yogis -From starting your practice to the mature practice that recognizes meditation is portable and can be done any time and anywhere -Various meditation tools: guided, breath, mantra, observation and frequency music options that make practice accessible and flexible -Spotting classic blockers at the edge of insight and stabilizing the insight so revelation becomes a living state, not a memory -Bringing the vibe with you—before meetings, generate the quality (peace, love, support) and walk in carrying it -Michael's extended guided meditation on intention, attention, and breath Meditation Resources -Livestream Michael every Sunday at 6:45 AM PT for his Way of Meditation service at Agape's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@AgapeSpiritualCenter/streams. In this episode of Science of Reading: The Podcast, Susan Lambert is joined by Northwestern University Professor of Education, Social Policy, and Psychology David Rapp. David's research focuses on language and memory, and his conversation with Susan gives insight into how memory is connected to comprehension. The first half of the episode is spent defining comprehension as a process, a product, and a higher-order cognitive process. David then digs into how that definition informs the ways in which educators assess comprehension and where they can look for potential failure points. One of these failure points includes misinformation. David addresses what happens when misinformation is stored in long-term memory. He details the issues this can cause for student comprehension, and he gives guidance on how to prevent and correct them.Show notes:Submit your questions on comprehension! Access free, high-quality resources at our brand new, companion professional learning page.  Check out David Rapp's lab.Resources:Listen to Season 2 of Amplify's Beyond My Years podcast.Join our community Facebook group.Connect with Susan Lambert.Quotes: “Once the information is in memory, you can't really get rid of it. In this episode of The Data Chief, Ilan Twig, co-founder and CTO of Navan, shares why large language models will revolutionize our relationship with technology—just like the mouse did for the keyboard. From pushing AI to its limits to launching Navan Cognition, built for zero critical hallucination, Ilan reveals what it really takes to lead through change and build AI that people can trust. He also dives into a critical question every company must face: Will you build AI from scratch, or build with AI partners?? And if you're curious about the next frontier, Ilan paints a bold vision of agent-to-agent communication—where AI services talk to each other and your admin work disappears into the background.  A must-listen for anyone building the future of AI-powered user experiences.Key Moments:Agent-to-Agent Communication (A2A) (17:00): Ilan envisions a future where dedicated AI services communicate with each other in natural language, without the need for an API. This "mother of all bots" would manage administrative tasks by talking to other bots, simplifying complex tasks for the user.AI as a "Human" Experience (27:16): Ilan was surprised by the release of ChatGPT in 2022 because it was the first time a technology felt human. This led him to spend four months building and testing the technology's boundaries, including its ability to lie or be "jailbroken" with creative prompts.Identifying the Core Business (31:43): Ilan advises companies to decide if they want to become an "AI company" or simply use AI. He explains that building a core AI platform requires a huge commitment.A Case Study in Building (35:32): The conversation furthers, as a light is shed on the building of “Navan Cognition”, because no solution existed at the time to prevent critical hallucinations in AI models. This system includes a supervisor agent that works to catch and correct undesirable responses, creating a "zero critical hallucination" experience for its users.Key Quotes:"LLMs would do to the mouse what the mouse did to the keyboard when it comes to how humans interact with computers."  - Ilan Twig“My role is to always apply the best technology in order to drive, to create the best product and best experience. That's my role. And it is not technology for the sake of technology. It is technology for the sake of creating value for the users." - Ilan Twig“We ended up using ThoughtSpot. We also applied the generative AI capabilities that you guys have built into your product. That's build versus buy. That's the benefit of buy.”  - Ilan TwigMentionsNavan Introduces World's Smartest T&E Personal AssistantNavan CognitionAI jailbreak method tricks LLMs into poisoning their own contextSurely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! Zohran Mamdani's historic win as New York City's first Muslim mayor member of the Democratic Socialists of America has gotten a lot of reaction from all political sides. Mamdani was just one of nearly twenty other Democrats that ran pushing socialist policies. Recent polls finds two-thirds of Democrats view socialism favorably, while fewer than half say the same now of capitalism. FOX's John Saucier speaks with Mike Emanuel, chief White House correspondent for FOX News and host of the FOX News Rundown' podcast, who says the results will be studied by both parties for future election strategies. In this episode of the Ageless Future Podcast, Cade Archibald explores how white adipose tissue (white fat) can be transformed into metabolically active brown fat to improve energy, fat loss, and overall health. He explains how excess white fat impairs mitochondrial function and nitric oxide production—two keys to aging and vitality. Cade discusses practical strategies like cold exposure, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and mitochondrial-boosting peptides (including MOTS-c, Epitalon, and Adipotide). He also reviews a fascinating animal study showing Adipotide reduced abdominal fat by 27% and improved insulin sensitivity by 50% in just 28 days. Listeners are challenged to try cold showers, HIIT, and energy tracking for better metabolic function and cellular health.www.agelessfuture.comLIKE/FOLLOW/SUBSCRIBE:YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@ReganArchibald / https://www.youtube.com/@Ageless.FutureInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ageless.future/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AgelessFutureHealth/
