Kevin Hall, Ph.D., is a physicist-turned-nutrition scientist whose rigorous research has upended some of our most sacrosanct beliefs about metabolism, dieting, and weight loss. This conversation explores why diets fail, the truth behind the "slow metabolism" myth, how ultra-processed foods hijack our biology, and why the 800-pound gorilla driving the obesity epidemic isn't willpower—it's our toxic food environment. Christmas tree fires are frightening, but they're not the leading cause of house fires in the U.S. What's surprising is how many fires start from everyday habits and household choices most people never think twice about. This episode begins with a look at several common yet overlooked causes of home fires. Source: https://www.bobvila.com/articles/fire-safety/#.Viz3ILerTIU We alter our own memories far more than we realize. We forget details, highlight the good parts, and unintentionally distort events over time. Now scientists are exploring how to deliberately modify specific memories — softening painful recollections and strengthening positive ones. Steve Ramirez explains how memory really works and where this groundbreaking research is headed. He is an associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at Boston University, a TED speaker, and author of How to Change a Memory: One Neuroscientist's Quest to Alter the Past (https://amzn.to/3KFiLJp). Wildlife encounters seem to be increasing — bears on porches, coyotes in yards, bobcats strolling down suburban streets. Are these animals getting more comfortable with humans? Are we building into their territory? And what should you actually do during a close encounter? Randi Minetor, author of more than 90 books including The Bear at the Bird Feeder: Why We're Seeing More Wild Animals in Our Neighborhoods and How We Can Live in Harmony with Them (https://amzn.to/4pHy5UM), offers insight and practical advice. Seeing flashing police lights in your rearview mirror is enough to make anyone nervous. Once you're pulled over, what should you do — and just as important, what should you not do — when the officer approaches your window? We wrap up with key tips to help keep the encounter calm and trouble-free. Source: https://www.aamva.org/law-enforcement/what-to-do-when-stopped-by-law-enforcement PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! This episode explores how intimacy, desire, and erotic states function as powerful tools for healing, nervous system regulation, and personal transformation. You'll learn why certain forms of conscious erotic play create genuine altered states of consciousness, not through substances or external compounds, but through the body's own internal chemistry. This conversation reframes sexuality as a core aspect of health, performance, and emotional resilience rather than something separate from personal development or spirituality. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Kimi Inch is a somatic therapist and educator with over 20 years of experience working at the intersection of intimacy, conscious kink, trauma healing, and embodied self awareness. Her work centers on helping individuals and couples access deep states of connection and healing through structured, consent based practices that engage breath, sensation, power dynamics, and presence. She is known for creating safe, grounded spaces where people can explore desire in ways that support lasting nervous system regulation and authentic self expression. Together, Dave Asprey and Kimi explore how erotic experiences trigger specific neurochemical responses including oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins, and adrenaline, and why this internal cocktail mirrors the effects of many psychedelic and somatic healing modalities. They discuss surrender, safety, attunement, and aftercare as essential components of integration, and why unexpressed desire often leaks into leadership, relationships, and performance in destructive ways. You'll Learn: • How erotic states create real altered states of consciousness through internal neurochemistry • Why intimacy can function as a powerful form of nervous system regulation and trauma healing • The difference between conscious desire and compulsive behavior • How surrender, safety, and attunement reshape emotional and relational patterns • Why suppressed desire leaks into work, leadership, and relationships • What makes healthy power dynamics healing rather than harmful • The role of aftercare and integration in long term transformation • How erotic intelligence connects to vitality, authenticity, and human performance Thank you to our sponsors! -EMR-Tek | https://www.emr-tek.com/DAVE and use code DAVE for 40% off. -Calroy | Head to https://calroy.com/dave for an exclusive discount. -Our Place | Head to https://fromourplace.com/ and use the code DAVE for 10% off your order. Explore how students are using simple mindful breathing practices to navigate stress, stay grounded, and support their classmates.Summary: Classrooms often are confronted with difficult topics that can leave students overwhelmed and anxious. In this episode of The Science of Happiness, we highlight how college student Evelyn Mata brought calm to herself and peers during an Immigration Studies class through simple collective breathing practices. How to Do Box Breathing: Sit comfortably: Find a quiet spot and focus on your breath, keeping a relaxed posture.  Inhale (4 counts): Breathe in slowly through your nose, letting the air fill your belly and chest. Keep the pace steady, not strained for a count of four.  Hold (4 counts): Pause gently at the top of the inhale. This isn't a tense hold, just a moment of stillness to let the body register calm. Hold your breath for four slow counts.  Exhale (4 counts): Release the breath through your nose or mouth in a smooth, even flow. Imagine tension leaving the body as the breath moves out for a count of four, emptying your lungs.  Hold (4 counts): Let yourself rest briefly in the empty space before the next inhale. This completes the “box.” Repeat: Continue this cycle for several minutes, or for 3-4 rounds, until you feel calmer. Stop sooner if you feel lightheaded; return to natural breathing when you're done. She challenges oversimplified evolutionary psychology narratives and underscores the importance of understanding the cultural evolution of gender roles. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why valuing women isn't enough52:52: You can say pretty words about valuing the feminine. Oh, you know, women are great. They're so wonderful. They're so empathic and collaborative and participative, and they're really good at building people. But you can't just say that—you have to actually change your organizations so that you literally put your money where your mouth is, so that is what is actually being rewarded.Redefining patriarchy10:37: There's a sort of assumption that when we talk about patriarchy, we're just talking about the harm to girls and women. Its long been recognized, I think, in feminism that often men and certain groups of men do also face harms in that kind of system that's keeping some men on top.Why our ideas about sex differences often get it wrong20:58: I do think we have to be careful about looking at our—first of all, making assumptions about what sex differences actually are—because they're often, you know, a huge amount of overlap, contingent depending on the context and the cues. But also, to then project that back into our ancestral past without taking a kind of wider look at societies beyond the weird populations—Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Cecilia L. Thirty years ago, NASA’s Galileo spacecraft became the first mission to orbit Jupiter, opening a new chapter in our exploration of the outer Solar System. Over eight years around Jupiter, Galileo transformed how we understand Jupiter and its moons, revealing a powerful and dynamic planetary system, uncovering evidence for oceans hidden beneath icy worlds, and reshaping the search for life beyond Earth. To mark the 30th anniversary of Galileo’s orbital insertion, scientists, engineers, historians, and advocates gathered at the California Institute of Technology for a special symposium: Galileo at 30. In this episode of Planetary Radio, host Sarah Al-Ahmed takes you inside that celebration. You’ll hear how Galileo survived seemingly impossible challenges, how its team adapted when things went wrong, and how its discoveries reshaped planetary science. You’ll hear from key voices in Galileo’s story, including historian Erik Conway, project manager Bill O’Neil, magnetometer principal investigator Margaret Kivelson, Europa Clipper Project Scientist Bob Pappalardo, and Dragonfly mission Principal Investigator Elizabeth “Zibi” Turtle, along with reflections from many others whose lives and careers were shaped by this remarkable mission. Together, they tell the story of Galileo not just as a spacecraft, but as a shared human effort, one whose legacy continues to guide exploration today. Send us a textHow seasonal changes in light and dietary unsaturated fats affect circadian rhythms in mammals.Topics Discussed:Evolutionary context of circadian rhythms: All organisms have adapted to Earth's 24-hour day for survival, with internal clocks slightly offset and adjusted by environmental cues.Molecular clock mechanism: Involves a feedback loop where proteins turn on/off genes, lasting ~24 hours, regulated by phosphorylation and degradation for timing precision.Genetic variations in sleep: Families with mutations in clock genes like PER2 cause extreme morning lark behavior, altering protein stability and period length by hours.Light entrainment: Morning light shortens human clocks (average 24.2 hours) to match 24-hour days; seasonal day length changes require gradual adjustments.Food & metabolic links: Seasonal food scarcity/abundance affects clock via glucose and fatty acids competing for protein modifications, as shown in diabetic mouse models.Role of unsaturated fats: Paper finds MUFA/PUFA ratios in diet alter phosphorylation of clock proteins, speeding or slowing adaptation to winter/summer light cycles in mice.Modern environmental impacts: Artificial light extends “daytime” signals, while constant food access erases seasonal patterns, contributing to obesity and diabetes risks.Jet lag & adaptations: Sudden time shifts mimic seasonal experiments; high-sugar/fat intake may phenocopy genetic effects to aid adjustment, though not recommended for health.Practical Takeaways:Expose yourself to morning natural light to help synchronize your internal clock and improve daily energy.Consume main meals during daylight hours and avoid late-night eating to align with natural metabolic rhythms.Limit evening screen time to reduce artificial blue light disrupting sleep onset.Consider varying diet seasonally, favoring diverse, whole foods to mimic natural availability patterns for better health.About the guest: Louis Ptacek, MD is a neurologist and professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Why are we so obsessed with “storytelling”?In education, we talk about it when we're working on language and reading comprehension. It's also referred to in sales and copy writing as a tool for generating more leads and customers. And of course, people writing books or films think about it all the time. We all know storytelling is an important life skill. But do we remember HOW MUCH it can impact our ability to communicate and function? And do we know how to support students who don't have this skill?I invited my colleague Jane Gebers to the De Facto Leaders podcast to discuss this topic. If you're helping students build skills for functional daily tasks, challenging academic work, or in social situations, you won't want to miss this conversation. In this first half of the interview, we talk about the “why” behind teaching narrative discourse, plus specific examples of how we've both used narrative structure to build our own comprehension.Jane L. Gebers is the author of the popular resource, Books Are for Talking, Too!, first published in 1990, and now in its 4th edition as of March 2023. A practicing speech-language pathologist for over 40 years, she has worked in public school, hospital, private, and clinical settings. Ever feel like the more you expect from yourself, the tighter you get? The pressure builds. Your focus slips. And instead of living free, you start overthinking every move – at work, at home, on the field, wherever you compete. Let's be real. High expectations don't automatically lead to high performance. In fact, when your mind is overloaded with expectations, your performance usually pays the price. What feels like discipline often turns into pressure, anxiety, and hesitation. What I've learned through my work with pro and executive athletes is simple but counterintuitive: performance doesn't come from expectation – it comes from preparation. And when your preparation is dialed in, freedom shows up. Freedom fuels confidence. And confidence unlocks your best game. In this week's 5-Minute Drill on Coming Up Clutch with J.R™, I break down the exact mindset shift and 3-step strategy I use with elite competitors to help them: Stop choking under pressure and start playing free Reallocate expectations from results to preparation Trust the outcome while staying locked into the process So if you're tired of gripping tighter and getting worse… If you're frustrated that your talent isn't translating into consistent performance… And if you want to bring your best – not just at work, but at home too – this episode is for you! In this episode, you'll hear: Why overloading yourself with high performance expectations often leads to worse results. The story of an MLB player who immediately regained freedom, confidence, and high-level performance after one subtle shift in his mindset. Science-backed reasons that explain why focusing on preparation over outcomes is a must. A powerful biblical example from the story of David and Goliath about how trusting God and leaning into your preparation leads to victory. The 3-step strategy to overcome the expectation trap. Key Quotes "When your mind is overloaded with performance expectations, your performance typically pays the price." - J.R. "Preparation creates freedom. Freedom fuels performance." - J.R. "We're not guaranteed success because of high expectations. We're put in better position to enjoy success because of our preparation." - J.R.
