Brittney explains what a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is and how it centers on prevention, rather than intervention. She also talks about the intersection of universal screening data and an MTSS, and provides advice on evidence-based strategies and techniques to make a positive impact in your classroom. Drawing on examples from her former district, Brittney discusses how to prevent burnout, use data effectively, and support ongoing improvement.Show notes: Connect with Brittney Bills on LinkedIn.Listen to Season 3 of the Amplify podcast Beyond My Years.Join our community Facebook group.Connect with Susan Lambert.Quotes:"[An] MTSS is not a thing that lives outside of the Science of Reading. Human childbirth is often difficult and incredibly painful—just ask anyone who's been through it. And for a long time, childbirth seemed to be uniquely difficult for humans. But a new study suggests that we aren't alone: Some small primates birth offspring whose heads are nearly twice the size of the mother's pelvic area.   So how do those primates go through difficult childbirths? Why didn't evolution make ours any easier? And what can this tell us about humankind? Flora explores these questions and more with anthropologist Lia Betti. She explains that imagination isn't something reserved for creativity or daydreaming; we're using it constantly to anticipate the future, interpret the present, and tell stories about the past. Cassandra shares how becoming more conscious of these patterns can help us recognize when our imagination is working against us, shift the stories that keep us stuck, and use this powerful capacity to approach challenges with greater flexibility, possibility, and hope. My new book, Own Or Be Owned, is all about building a business so good it doesn't need you. More profit, less pain. It's out September 18, grab your ticket to the launch event here: https://contrarianthinking.biz/oobo_bigdeal - cs You've been visualizing success. Watching the vision board. Repeating the affirmations. Trusting the universe to deliver. Here's the truth: the more vividly you fantasize about success, the worse you perform. And the science proves it. The Secret sold 30 million copies by promising that if you visualize wealth hard enough, the universe will deliver it. But two decades of research shows the opposite. NYU psychologists tracked college graduates and found that students who spent the most time in positive fantasies about their dream jobs sent out fewer applications, got fewer offers, and earned lower salaries two years later. Your brain books the fantasy as a partial payment on the real thing, giving you the reward before you've done the work. Manifestation isn't fuel. It's anesthesia. This episode breaks down the exact frameworks elite builders use instead, why Buddhist monks sit with decaying bodies to rehearse death, and the three anti-manifestation moves that turn goals into reality. From the Stoic practice of premeditation of evils to the WHOOP method that doubles your odds of success, you'll learn why imagining failure makes you stronger and how to engineer systems that make your obituary impossible. In this episode, you'll learn: Why NYU research proves that positive fantasies kill performance and how students who visualized success earned 24 pounds less in weight loss studies and lower salaries than peers who confronted reality The five step anti-manifestation practice: write your business obituary, name what caused the death, run the survival check, extract the system, and put it on the calendar quarterly The Stockdale Paradox: why optimists died in Vietnam POW camps and how brutal faith in the destination plus brutal honesty about the path is what separates winners from wishful thinkers Why announcing goals out loud makes you quit 33% faster and how premature applause becomes a paycheck your brain cashes before the work exists The WHOOP framework: Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan, and how this method doubles your odds of hitting goals by naming the exact moment resistance shows up and engineering the if-then response in advance And one more thing for the business owners: stop making million dollar decisions alone! The most damaging hours of the Lindsay Clancy murder trial belonged to her own defense attorney on Day 10. Then the prosecution took the exact same testimony and turned it around.Kevin Reddington spent the morning at Plymouth Superior Court walking Dr. Jennifer Tufts through everything she did not have. No file from the perinatal clinic her patient was attending. No conversation with the family. No signed authorization that would have unlocked either. Tufts, who is a named defendant in a malpractice claim over this care, told the jury she did not believe she had been negligent.Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague began her redirect by asking Tufts to describe what psychosis looks like in an appointment, then asked whether she had ever seen any of it in Lindsay Clancy. Tufts answered no. She said she saw no mania either, and described the presentation as the opposite.Sprague then built out the state's theory. Clancy scheduled her own appointments. She took herself to an emergency room without being sent. She reported her medications and her reactions to them with precision. On the family question, Sprague established that federal privacy law barred Tufts from calling relatives at all.One more detail landed for the prosecution. Clancy reported on January 16, 2023 that she had to force herself out of bed, and Tufts testified she had no idea her patient had taken the children to the Museum of Science days earlier.Tony lays out both readings of the same day and where the afternoon witness leaves them.Clancy is presumed innocent of the charges against her and has pleaded not guilty. We can envision what our lives may look like in the future or revisit the past. Psychologist Cassandra Vieten argues that using our imagination is not about immersing ourselves in a fantasy world. It's a powerful tool that affects our physical and mental health, our relationships with others, and life trajectories and careers. What role does empathy play in the healing process?Healing has become one of the defining pursuits of our time. Whether through medicine, therapy, or countless approaches to emotional and psychological well-being, people everywhere are searching for ways to heal.Yet there is one essential force that, while often acknowledged, is still profoundly underestimated: empathy. You've probably heard of mirror neurons. Science has shown that we're wired to mirror one another's experiences. Watch someone accidentally slam a door on their fingers, God forbid, and you'll instinctively cringe. You may even cry out, "Ouch!" Though the pain isn't yours, you feel it because, in some way, you have entered their experience. But what if empathy is more than a reflex? What if it's one of the most powerful healing forces we possess? Can another person begin to heal simply because they know they're not alone? Because they feel deeply seen, understood, and held with genuine care and compassion?Perhaps healing doesn't begin only with the right treatment. Perhaps it begins with the reassuring presence of another human being who truly feels your pain. Please join Rabbi Simon Jacobson as we explore The Empathy Effect—how the simple act of feeling, listening, and caring can become a profound path to healing.

Water always wins. The question is whether we let it cool the planet while it does — or keep fighting it until there's nothing left to fight with.Erica Gies is the author of Water Always Wins: Thriving in an Age of Drought and Deluge, and is currently writing her second book, Roots to Sky: How Life and Water Can Help Cool Earth's Climate, due in 2028. She is an environmental journalist who has spent more than a decade travelling the world to document how communities are rebuilding their relationship with water — not by controlling it better, but by understanding what water wants and working with it.The common climate narrative — decarbonise, bring fossil fuel emissions to zero, done — is no longer sufficient on its own. Water vapour accounts for roughly half the greenhouse effect. We've degraded 75% of the earth's land surface, largely by draining it. And more sea level rise comes from pumping groundwater than from melting glaciers — something a 1970 MIT Press report already knew. We've only accelerated since. The good news: this is something we can change relatively quickly through land restoration. And water is absolutely key.In this episode:— Why water always wins and what it means to ask what water wants rather than fighting it— How growing up in California, built on extreme water engineering, shaped Erica's obsession— Why she shifted from surface water to the atmosphere for her new book Roots to Sky— The 1970 MIT report that flagged pumping groundwater raises sea levels — 55 years of acceleration since— Why 87% of wetlands drained, two thirds of rivers dammed, and cities doubled since 1992 have made our water problems worse, not better— Why the best water solutions are modular and decentralised — and why that's empowering— What beavers in California are teaching farmers who spent eighty years shooting them— Why investors optimising single variables are running out of natural buffers faster than they think— Why land back for indigenous peoples may be one of the highest-return interventions available— Her magic wand answer: caring for non-humans — and why she thinks we're closer to it than it seems.More about this episode.Thoughts? Black-and-white Warblers are tiny songbirds that breed in North America's deciduous forests and winter as far south as Colombia. They feast on insects gleaned from leaves or plucked from cracks in tree bark. You'll often find them clinging to tree trunks or the undersides of thick branches — acting more like a nuthatch than a warbler. Like many songbirds, Black-and-white Warblers migrate at night — using the stars to navigate. Unfortunately, nocturnal light pollution can disrupt their sense of direction or cause them to collide with buildings. You can help Black-and-white Warblers by turning off outdoor lights and shading your windows at night, especially during migration season. With the Trump administration's newest political persecution of Anthony Fauci and three years after our first lab-leak special, now seemed like a useful time to return to the topic. Fortunately, you do not have to rely on our knowledge of viruses, as we have somehow managed to convince the same three esteemed virologists, Eddie Holmes, Kristian Andersen and Michael Worobey, to come back for an update.Mike, Kristian and Eddie return and offer us their read on where the scientific evidence on COVID's origins stands in 2026. They take us through the main lines of evidence and the often overlooked role of the wildlife trade, explaining why the lab-leak story remains so appealing, and how their own assessments have shifted as more evidence has emerged. We also discuss the standard claim that the media suppressed the lab-leak narrative while noting that coverage across both alternative and mainstream outlets remains heavily skewed towards it (and almost entirely detached from the research literature). Finally, we end on a characteristically positive note by discussing the Trump administration's attacks on science and the ongoing campaigns against high-profile scientists and public health figures. Our guests describe their experience of committing the heinous offence of following the scientific evidence and arriving at conclusions that contradict the preferred views of polemical politicians and prominent media pundits. In short, this episode is our modest attempt to drag the topic back towards the science, while also focusing on the price paid by the people who actually conduct the research and care about the evidence. We are not neutral when it comes to the ongoing attacks on science and scientists and do not pretend to be. Dr. Alan Cohen is Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences, Chair of Biological Complexity and Healthy Longevity, and Co-Director of the Science of Health Program in the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. In his research, Alan takes a theoretical biology approach to some of the biggest questions in science, including what aging is and what it means to be alive. Rather than viewing biology only as a collection of individual genes, molecules, and cells, he studies how these components interact as complex dynamic systems to maintain the internal balance that supports health. His work explores how the breakdown of these interconnected systems may underlie aging and disease, and how scientists can develop new ways to measure and understand these changes beyond traditional reductionist approaches. When he's not working, Alan enjoys practicing Aikido, a martial art he first learned while living in Japan. He also does contact improvisation dance, where partners use spontaneous points of physical contact to create movement together without knowing where the dance will lead. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Asian Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and he was awarded his PhD in Biology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Afterwards, Alan completed postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Sherbrooke. He then served on the faculty at the University of Sherbrooke for about 12 years before accepting a position at Columbia University in 2022. Alan has received various awards and honors, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Aging New Investigator Prize of Excellence in Research on Aging and the CIHR New Investigator Salary Award. In this interview, he shares more about his life and science.

In this episode of the Animal Training Academy podcast, host Ryan Cartlidge is joined by special guests Irith Bloom and Dr. Kristina Spaulding to discuss their mentorship and certification program, Carefree Companion. Together, Ryan, Irith, and Dr. Spaulding explore how the program bridges the gap between technical training plans and a human owner's ability to successfully implement them. Dr. Spaulding brings her expertise as a scientist and behaviorist with a PhD in biopsychology, specializing in the neurobiology of stress, while Irith brings over 40 years of animal training experience and a deep focus on agency and the science of learning. The guests share the origins of their professional partnership, which blossomed from working together on education committees and through shared interests in science, stress, and behavioral choice. The conversation dives deep into the concept of dialectics—embracing "andness" instead of an "either/or" mentality—and how both contradictory emotions and complex problem-solving are a normal part of the human experience when living with companion animals. They also unpack the power of motivational interviewing, explaining how trainers can move away from imposing rigid expectations and instead use open-ended questions and curiosity to understand human resistance, build better collaboration, and help clients find their own path forward. Finally, they break down the structure of the 28-week Carefree Companion program, highlighting its blend of synchronous live calls, structured asynchronous discussion forums, and individualized monthly mentorship. Throughout this episode, we discuss: ✅ The origin of the partnership between Irith Bloom and Dr. Kristina Spaulding  ✅ What dialectics are and why embracing "andness" helps both pet owners and trainers navigate conflicting feelings ✅ How the Carefree Companion program evolved to focus heavily on coaching skills and human pedagogy ✅ The application of scaffolding in human learning—providing temporary support and gradually pulling back to foster client independence ✅ How motivational interviewing helps professionals uncover client motivations and navigate resistance without judgment ✅ The 28-week structure of the Carefree Companion certification, featuring live group discussions, forums, and one-on-one mentorship ✅ Creating a safe, collaborative space where respectful disagreement and diverse viewpoints lead to transformative learning Whether you are an experienced trainer or a behavior consultant looking to deepen your coaching toolkit, this episode offers a refreshing and practical roadmap for bridging the gap between animal behavior science and effective human collaboration.
