Jim Norton and Matt Serra are joined by both sides of UFC Vancouver's co-main event — Kevin Holland and Mike Malott — just days before the welterweights step into the Octagon.Mike Malott stops by first to talk about representing Canada once again on home soil. Well aware of the danger Holland presents, he breaks down their matchup and shares what a win would mean for a Malott family riding its own athletic high — with younger brother Jeff making noise in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings. Then, Kevin Holland calls in ahead of his fifth fight of 2025 to explain his approach to fighting Malott and reveal which highly-respected veteran he's chasing for fight number SIX of the year if all goes to plan in Vancouver on Saturday.Plus, Jim and Matt break down the UFC Vancouver card headlined by Reinier de Ridder vs. Brendan Allen with some picks of their own.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this AMA episode of the Rational Reminder Podcast, Ben Felix and Dan Bortolotti return to answer listener questions across a wide range of topics—from covered call ETFs and dividend tax credits to currency hedging, bond mechanics, leverage, and career reflections. They open with a striking quote from Harvard economist John Campbell on how markets cater to perceived benefits rather than real ones—a perfect setup for their recent discussions on the rise of covered call ETFs. Key Points From This Episode: (0:59) John Campbell's quote on capitalism's tendency to meet perceived rather than rational needs—and how that perfectly describes the financial industry. (3:44) Covered calls as the perfect example: products that respond to investor demand for yield, not what's actually in their best interest. (4:49) Dan compares income-chasing in covered call ETFs to Apple's marketing genius—except in finance, the benefits flow mostly to issuers, not investors. (5:48) Why dividend bias was relatively harmless, but the covered call craze is not—and how new ETFs “multiply like rabbits.” (7:46) Ben's analysis: in every example studied, covered call investors ended up with less wealth than those holding the underlying equities. (8:13) The hidden trade-off: holding covered call ETFs is like keeping 25–30% of your portfolio in cash for a decade. (9:33) Lighter interlude: Dan teases Ben about his lentil (and later cabbage) lunches. (9:59) First AMA question: Are domestic dividend tax credits already priced into stock valuations? (Short answer: partially, depending on investor composition.) (12:13) Why even if tax benefits are “priced in,” Canadians with favorable tax rates still come out ahead. (15:58) Hedging currencies in commodity economies like Canada and Australia—when it helps, when it hurts, and why there's no perfect answer. (18:48) Dan explains why unhedged portfolios can actually be less volatile for Canadians and why most hedging is imprecise and costly in practice. (20:03) Behavioral perspective: splitting the difference between hedged and unhedged can be the “strategy of least regret.” (21:06) Bonds demystified—why falling prices during rising rates affect funds and individual bonds equally. (22:22) Understanding duration: bond ETFs are designed to stay at a target maturity, while individual bonds age toward zero duration. (26:03) How rising yields actually improve financial plans by boosting future expected returns. (29:08) Choosing the right bond fund duration based on your time horizon and liabilities. (33:39) Are recent bond losses an anomaly? Ben and Dan explain how decades of falling rates created unrealistic expectations. (36:21) The role of unexpected rate changes in bond volatility—and why central banks don't control long-term yields. (38:01) Market-cap weighting: why it remains the most defensible way to allocate across countries and sectors. (41:48) What's changed their thinking after six years of Rational Reminder—from Scott Cederberg's asset allocation data to the behavioral power of homeownership. (45:13) The Horizons/Global X ETF debate: how swap-based, corporate-class structures create tax efficiency—and why that efficiency could vanish. (50:42) Why PWL avoids these products: potential hidden tax liabilities and lack of transparency for clients. (54:31) Borrowing to invest: Ben outlines why leverage works in theory—but Dan explains why most investors shouldn't touch it. (57:25) New “modest leverage” ETFs (125% exposure) as a more behavioral-friendly version of borrowing to invest. (1:00:36) Fulfillment and frustration in finance: helping people achieve peace of mind vs. seeing deception still rampant in the industry. (1:03:09) Five years of Vanguard's all-in-one ETFs (like VEQT): how they've delivered exactly what they promised and reshaped DIY investing in Canada. (1:07:47) Why these “one-ticket” portfolios remain the biggest innovation in Canadian investing—and why global diversification matters more than ever. (1:08:50) Revisiting bonds in retirement: what to expect when they don't offset stock volatility, and how to rethink risk management beyond yield-chasing. This is the second GeriPal podcast we've recorded live using this format, see this link to our prior podcast at the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) meeting in Philadelphia. Also look for our upcoming podcast recorded live from the São Paulo Geriatrics & Gerontology Congress, click here to register. Today we join you from beautiful Banff, Alberta, Canada at the National Palliative Care Research Center (NPCRC) annual Kathleen Foley retreat. This meeting was bittersweet. I've been fortunate to attend every meeting in one capacity or another since 2006. The NPCRC made an enormous impact on the growth and capacity for palliative care research nationally. Personally, NPCRC funding was essential support as I was a new faculty member and had not yet secured longer term career development funding. More than anything, though, I will miss the NPCRC community. I treasure those meals, hikes, sing-alongs with others dedicated to improving care of people with serious illness through research. On today's podcast, we invited Dio Kavalieratos, Prasanna Ananth, and Alexi Wright to join us to talk about three articles that spoke to them. For each I leave you with a teaser of a hard question that was raised that we couldn't really answer. Prasanna chose an article by Abby Rosenberg about being fired in palliative care. We talked about why palliative care clinicians get fired, with Prasanna, a pediatric oncologist, raising the issue that it's more problematic when you're the oncologist providing primary palliative care and you get fired than if the consultant specialty palliative care provider is fired. Dio chose an article about the economic benefits of palliative care internationally, a call to action. We talked about the needs of palliative care internationally, and Alexi raised the question: should the highest standard of palliative care (e.g. in the US) apply to palliative care in every country, a la the Partners in Health model pioneered by the late Paul Farmer? Or should we “settle” for access to affordable opioids? Alexi chose an article about cancer care in prison. Alexi used it as a springboard to talk about other populations at compounded risk for poorer care in the current political environment. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did, dear listeners. We're always trying to improve, and welcome your suggestions for how to improve upon this new “live” format. So far we've heard we need to be better at summarizing the articles for the audience/listeners, and finding ways to involve our live audience to a greater extent than the occasional question. Please let us know if you have other suggestions! Final note - check out the wonderful video NPCRC created about their impact on the field of palliative care (Eric and I were filmed recording GeriPal). -Alex Smith This episode of the GeriPal Podcast is sponsored by UCSF's Division of Palliative Medicine, an amazing group doing world class palliative care. They are looking for physician faculty to join them in the inpatient and outpatient setting. To learn more about job opportunities, please click here: https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/apply/JPF05811

Jeff Wall is one of the most influential photographers of our time. His photos have sold for millions at auctions, he's an Officer of the Order of Canada, and his work has advanced photography as an art form through the use of staged scenes and large lightboxes. But before ever picking up a camera, Jeff was just a kid living in Vancouver trying to find his way, experimenting with different artistic mediums like painting and filmmaking. Now, he's getting ready for his first major Canadian exhibit in 25 years. In a rare interview, Jeff tells Tom Power about the first time he got a camera, how his parents supported him by building him a shed in their backyard, and why he kind of likes it when you don't know the titles of his photographs.Fill out our listener survey here. Today Tony is diving beneath the surface of one of history's most enduring legends: Atlantis. Joining him are maritime archaeologist and bestselling author, David Gibbons, and the writer Damian Le Bas. A life-long fascination with the Atlantis myth has shaped both their work. Together they explore the shifting meanings of Atlantis, from Plato's parable to pop culture icon. They look at the political allegory of Plato's story as a critique of imperialism, how Atlantis has been reinterpreted across history, and the metaphorical idea of Atlantis as a horizon of unknowing: both a physical and philosophical “beyond". When we think of the Second World War, the story is so often told through an Anglo-American lens: Britain holding out alone in 1940, the United States joining the fight in 1941, and the combined Allied effort that followed. But this perspective tends to overshadow the contributions of other nations, particularly Canada. Canada was not usually regarded as a global military power, yet its role in the war was both significant and far-reaching. From the skies over Europe to the convoys crossing the Atlantic and the soldiers who landed on D-Day, Canadian forces made an impact far greater than their country's population might suggest. In this episode of the WW2 Podcast, I am joined by historian David Borys to look more closely at Canada's military in the Second World War. We discuss how Canada approached the conflict, the part it played within the wider Allied war effort, and how its contribution is remembered today. David is a Canadian academic, author of Punching Above Our Weight: The Canadian Military at War Since 1867, and host of Curious Canadian History. His new podcast, Conflict and Culture, explores the intersections of war and society, and we'll touch on that later in our conversation. patreon.com/ww2podcast

The planned Halloween auction of The Conjuring house has been abruptly canceled after a mysterious buyer stepped in and purchased the infamous Rhode Island property outright. Jim and Dar dig into what's known so far, who the buyer might be, and whether this means the end of public investigations and overnight stays at one of America's most notorious haunted homes. From there, the discussion widens across the paranormal spectrum—from the debate over the interstellar object 3I/Atlas, which some believe could be an artificial craft, to Canada's new push to reduce the ridicule surrounding UFO witnesses and a former U.S. defense official's claim that the Pentagon is once again clamping down on UAP transparency. Other stories include a Pennsylvania “curse removal” scam that fleeced victims of hundreds of thousands, reports of new Bigfoot footprints near Mount St. Helens, a global alliance linking Loch Ness, Bigfoot, and Yeti researchers, and even actress Anna Kendrick's Loch Ness sighting last week. Jim also highlights new research showing how near-death experiences can upend lives in unexpected ways, and revisits a 1927 BBC telepathy experiment that tried to prove minds could broadcast like radios. The show wraps with Ohio's new title as the most haunted-house-packed state in America, merch and event updates, and an invitation to the Halloween livestream on YouTube, October 31 at 8 p.m. Eastern. In this incredibly personal and moving episode, we sit down with Teejay and Jon, the authors of the gentle children's book Clemence, to share the full, raw story of their daughter, Nadiya. Their journey began with an unexpected connection—a transatlantic online romance between Teejay in Australia and Jon in Canada—that quickly turned into a marriage grounded in a shared life and purpose. With Teejay's extensive background in early childhood development and their experience fostering a young man with Down syndrome, they felt prepared when Nadiya was diagnosed with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) early in the pregnancy. However, Nadiya's complications were severe: a complete AVSD (Atrioventricular Septal Defect), a heart condition that made survival a constant battle. Teejay and Jon open up about the grueling reality of Nadiya's three-month, extended NICU stay. They speak candidly about the sheer exhaustion, the mental toll of the incessant alarms and machine noise, and the profound isolation of making life-and-death decisions under unimaginable pressure. We explore the difficult but necessary truth of grieving alongside a partner who processes loss in a completely different way. Jon, an extrovert, sought normalcy and company, while Teejay, an introvert, needed space and quiet isolation. They explain how establishing mutual respect and seeking professional counseling were the key foundations that saved their marriage during this seismic time. Finally, they share the powerful mission behind their book, Clemence. Written to honor Nadiya's memory, it provides a crucial tool for families, helping them talk to children about baby sibling loss. They reveal plans for a sequel to address the unique grief of the "neglected mourners"—the subsequent children born after a loss who never met their older sibling. This conversation is an essential listen for anyone in the NICU community, processing loss, or seeking resources for pediatric grief support. Note: We recognize this episode addresses Infant and Pregnancy Loss Awareness. We stand with all families who have experienced loss and hope this conversation brings comfort and community. Sadly in this episode we bring you another horrific case of a serial abuser with political, entertainment and elite connections.Dubbed the "Epstein" of Canada, Peter Nygard has mostly stayed out of the main stream news but his decades of trafficing and abuse may be worse than Epstein. There is a very dark side to this story that rarely gets reported which involves the pursuit for immortality and what he was actually doing with all the very young females he lured.Buckle up.....this should be a wake up call for all of us!Email us at: downtherh@protonmail.com
In this powerful and uplifting episode of Fitzlife Unfiltered, Kim sits down with her friend, wellness entrepreneur, and newly published author Andrea Rogers, to discuss her new book “Small Moves Big Life: Seven Daily Practices to Supercharge Your Energy, Productivity, and Happiness.”The conversation is a heartfelt mix of inspiration, vulnerability, and tangible strategies for living a more intentional, energized life.Kim opens the episode by celebrating Andrea's magnetic energy, describing how her presence lights up any room. Despite her petite frame, Andrea's confidence and spirit “move mountains.” Together, they reflect on Andrea's journey from dancer and choreographer to wellness leader, global fitness trainer, and now author. Andrea shares how her early passion for movement evolved into a career devoted to helping women reconnect with their bodies and reclaim their power through small, consistent daily practices.A central theme of the episode is the transformative power of movement and breath. Andrea explains that the simplest tool is intentional breathing and even ten minutes of movement a day can radically shift your energy and mindset. “Move your body, move your life,” she says, emphasizing that small, consistent actions are far more powerful than grand but unsustainable bursts of effort. She walks listeners through the science behind breathwork and mindfulness, showing how these tools calm the nervous system, restore focus, and create a foundation of self-worth.Kim and Andrea also discuss the myth of constant motivation and the truth that consistency is often boring, yet it's in that boredom and repetition where mastery, growth, and self-trust are built. They explore how habits formed with intention become automatic anchors that support balance and presence throughout life's chaos. Andrea reminds listeners that maintenance seasons are part of thriving and that sometimes “staying steady is the win.”The episode closes with reflections on authenticity, female leadership, and legacy. Andrea's upcoming book tour and events (including New York City, Austin, and Dallas) are shared, along with Kim's heartfelt pride in her friend's discipline and heart. Together they embody the spirit of women uplifting women and celebrating courage, consistency, and the daily commitment to becoming who we're meant to be.This episode is both grounding and energizing and a reminder that small, intentional actions, repeated with love, can change your entire life.Thank you so much for listening!Kim & JamiePurchase Book in US: https://www.amazon.com/Small-Moves-Big-Life-Productivity/dp/1637747454?utm_source=chatgpt.comPurchase Book in Canada: https://www.amazon.ca/Small-Moves-Big-Life-Productivity/dp/1637747454 www.fitzlife.ca
Paul goes to Namibia to check the cute WDH airport, and drive 3000km+ — and yes, before you all ask, driving the Skeleton Coast is everything you dream it to be (this country is stunning, and the NamibRand is perhaps the most beautiful place he has ever seen). He falls in love with Airlink (from their Embraer to their extensive safety talk, and they serve something called food, a forgotten art in Europe/North America), maybe with JNB a bit less (but that lounge there, woah!). Should you board when an aircraft is refueling? Maybe better than staying in front of it like Paul wanted (but the words of the catapion overrule him). Vinod does wide body bingo in Canada (there's one route always on time, listen to discover which!), and shares his South African Airways memories (the current one is a shadow of its former self). The last 777-300ER has left the factory, meanwhile the 777x is delayed, again (dire when compared to the speed of delivery of earlier designs), but it will be a success. SWISS is selling its famous on-board chocolates in stores, but be quick, it's only temporary (you can always dance the extra chocolate off at the Zurich Airport wave, which seems easier to access than the Narita raves we discussed in 149). Hacking the airplane wifi? Well, not really, but... And yes, like in every episode, we talk BA, and we mention FRA haha. We're on video if you listen to us to Spotify, or YouTube (this is nearly 3 hours, our record, so prepare to see our faces for that long!)Thank you to long time listener Garett Gaudet for his insights, here's his latest (excellent) MixCloudSee you in the next episode, happy flying! —For video, subscribe on Spotify or YouTube (or YouTube Music)Review, and rate us, on Apple PodcastsFollow us, and comment on: Instagram - Bluesky - Threads - Mastodon - Twitter/XComment, like, review, and rate us, on FacebookSearch for 'Layovers' on any podcast service (some direct links are on our website)If we're missing somewhere, or for any feedback, let Paul know on Instagram - Threads - Mastodon - Bluesky - Twitter/X

In this exclusive episode of An Educated Guest, host Todd Zipper sits down with John Baker, the visionary Founder and CEO of D2L. John shares the remarkable 25-year journey of D2L, tracing its evolution from a student startup into a publicly traded global learning platform. The conversation explores the massive industry shift from simply managing content to building a "true perpetual learning platform" that serves K-12, higher education, and corporate clients. John argues that AI is the critical enabler—the final piece of the puzzle that will solve chronic issues like lack of personalization and high student failure rates, making models like competency-based education easier to implement than ever before. He provides a fascinating look at SkillsWave, discussing why employers are demanding stackable micro-credentials and why the future of education is less about the traditional degree and more about building skills for "more caring, more impactful work." John also addresses the challenge of AI-enabled cheating and offers a bold prediction for how personalization will redefine quality education in the next decade.Key Takeaways from this Episode:The Power of AI in the LMS: How D2L's generative AI tool, LUMI, is already transforming the faculty workflow by automating assignment and quiz creation, freeing up time for human mentorship.Competency-Based Education (CBE): Why CBE, long seen as theoretical, is now poised for mainstream adoption, thanks to AI simplifying the difficult work of mapping skills and creating personalized pathways. The Global Advantage: Insights into how D2L achieved market leadership in countries like Singapore and Canada by obsessing over client problems and incorporating local innovations into its global product.Building Enduring Companies: John's advice on how a relentless focus on solving the client's biggest problem—and treating change as a constant—is the only sustainable strategy in EdTech.About Our Guest:John Baker is the Founder and CEO of D2L and the Executive Chairman of SkillsWave. He successfully led D2L through its IPO and remains a driving force in its strategic direction. He is recognized globally for his expertise in learning science, technology, and the future of work.

Chelsea Ross is the founder of Goddess Retreats, an award-winningwellness sanctuary in Bali that is a safe and supportive community for women seeking self-discovery and connection. She launched the world's first luxury, women-only surf and yoga retreat in 2003, long before it became mainstream. At that time, men and boys were often the only ones participating in the sport of surfing. She proved that women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities can surf -- and that you don't need to fit the media's image of a ‘surfer girl' to be part of the ocean's magic. Over the years, she expanded her offerings to include wellness, healing, and cultural experiences, too. The sanctuary blends personal growth with cultural immersion, pairing private villa stays with unlimited indulgent spa treatments, daily yoga, and holistic healing. There are also now two locations: the rice paddies of Ubud and the peaceful coastline of Seminyak. Chelsea has lived all over the world -- in southeast Asia, Australia, and Canada. She also has had very diverse work experience, including in hospitality, sales and marketing, as a life coach, salon owner, and more.Contact Info:Chelsea Ross - GuestGoddes Retreats (Instagram)Goddess Retreats websiteJulie Berman - Hostwww.womenwithcooljobs.com@womencooljobs (Instagram)Julie Berman (LinkedIn)Send Julie a text!!Hey, thanks so much for listening to the podcast. Happy Spooky Wednesday, Friends! We continue our Urban Legends October with tales of Canada! First, we've got the Dungarvon Whooper, a murdered lumber camp cook whose spirit haunts the forest, making loud, chilling "whooping" noises. Speaking of things that make strange noises in the dark, we're also talking about the Screaming Tunnel where a woman's disembodied voice can be heard shrieking for help. And finally, we've got the Blue Ghost Tunnel, where you could possibly encounter ghosts of workers who passed when their train derailed. Oh, Canada, indeed.

In the heart of Beverly Hills, just after a red-carpet movie premiere, the life of Ronni Chasen, one of Hollywood's most connected and beloved publicists, came to a violent and mysterious end. On November 16, 2010, the 64-year-old was gunned down in her Mercedes-Benz while stopped at a red light. The shocking murder of the woman who helped secure Oscar Gold for films like Driving Miss Daisy and The Hurt Locker instantly made national headlines. Ronni's influential friends quickly offered a combined $125,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. This massive reward signaled that her inner circle wasn't convinced the killing was a random act. A tip to America's Most Wanted led police to Harold Martin Smith, a man with a lengthy criminal record living in a rundown apartment complex. When confronted by detectives, Smith ended his own life with a .38 caliber revolver. The Beverly Hills Police Department officially closed the case in 2011, declaring Smith the sole killer and the motive of a random robbery gone wrong. However, this "solved" status remains highly controversial due to several glaring contradictions: Ronni's purse was untouched and nothing was taken, contradicting the robbery motive. Police claimed Smith was on a bicycle, but her autopsy report suggests an unknown vehicle pulled up beside her car. The ballistic evidence was inconclusive; documents revealed the findings were "insufficient for an identification" to definitively match the bullet to Smith's gun. Law enforcement was criticized for failing to interview multiple residents and for poor evidence collection. Thank you to this week's sponsors! In this gripping two-part episode of Impact Theory, Tom Bilyeu welcomes back the ever-provocative Michael Malice—author, podcaster, and noted cultural commentator—for a wide-ranging and sharp-witted exploration of American decline, political polarization, and the state of the nation. Malice, renowned for his contrarian takes and deep dives into political history, brings his brand of irreverent insight to dissect the narratives of collapse and ascension in today's America. In Part 1, Tom and Michael confront the popular notion of America's “decline,” argue over metrics and historical context, and investigate whether we're truly on the verge of societal unraveling. The conversation journeys through economic pressures facing young people, the dangers of polarization and “soft secession,” and the historical parallels with past national struggles. With cutting banter and hard-hitting questions, they provide listeners with fresh perspectives on the culture wars, economic stagnation, and the rise of populism—all while refusing to shy away from uncomfortable truths. 00:00 – Intro 00:34 – anatomy of collapse 05:56 – Soft secession: State vs. federal power games 07:27 – Trade-offs, Trump derangement, and costs of polarization 08:39 – Paths ahead: Civil War, Argentina, or revolution? 10:46 – Revolution mechanics: Is another 1860s-style war possible? 13:12 – Violence, political unrest, and expanding executive power 16:06 – Economic crushing of young people and the rise of populism 17:58 – Housing, inflation, and the struggle for the American Dream 20:08 – Currency as a store of value: Societal ruin and a lack of political will 23:10 – The Japan counterargument and the threshold for crisis 26:07 – What drives people to “blink” in political standoffs? 28:24 – Party priorities, empty rhetoric, and pivoting for power 32:00 – Economic disenfranchisement, the myth of moderate politics 34:23 – Passing on generational wealth: Consequences of deficit spending 36:56 – Populism vs. establishment: Energies within parties 39:03 – Political novelty, enthusiasm gaps, and voter turnout 41:38 – Global leftward drift: Authoritarianism in Canada, UK, and beyond 44:01 – Free speech vs. soft totalitarianism: Censorship through crisis 46:13 – “The time for talk is over”—what this actually means FOLLOW MICHAEL MALICE: Twitter: https://twitter.com/michaelmalice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelmalice/ Locals: https://malice.locals.com/ Linkedin: Post your job free at https://linkedin.com/impacttheory Netsuite: Download the new e-book Navigating Global Trade: 3 Insights for Leaders at http://NetSuite.com/Theory Shopify: Sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial period at https://shopify.com/impact Connectteam: 14 day free trial at https://connecteam.cc/46GxoTF Tailor Brands: 35% off https://tailorbrands.com/podcast35 What's up, everybody?
