George Carollo of Dover.com tells Geordie how he founded the platform, built the MVP, and built their MRR from 40 to 400k in 9 months amid the pandemic. Listen and learn. George Carollo is the co-founder of Dover, the inaugural end-to-end Y Combinator-based recruiting platform that helps enterprises recruit top-tier talent. Previously, George worked in venture capital, project finance, and fintech, where he gained tremendous experience. He talks to Geordie about his journey. What You’ll Learn The problem that Dover.com solves for its customers Who is the ideal Dover customer? How George and his co-founders identified the core problem What is George’s vision for their product? How George and his team started building a SaaS product Where can hiring managers find potential candidates? How Dover collaborates with hiring managers to get the best talent How George and his team determined the core problem Importance of user feedback before developing a potential solution Pros and cons of Y Combinator In this Episode Many recruiting managers struggle with hiring and retaining top talent. George, whose career began in the finance industry, says he learned how to become a front-end engineer on the go. During his learning process, he came up with the idea of developing a targeted solution that hiring managers could leverage to hire experienced talent. George has coding skills which he says helped him become conversant with the coding language. However, he believes there are more talented people than him. According to George, Dover is exclusively designed for hiring managers regardless of their department. He says that approximately 50% of their users are founders, while the remaining 50% are hiring managers. Every successful business must begin with robust ideas. By the time George joined Dover, his co-founders had already identified around 20 ideas they wanted to work around. They later worked together to prolong their list of ideas and surprisingly got their first customers without tech. Listen to the podcast to understand how this idea worked. While George and his team had a long list of ideas, they struggled to differentiate the good from the non-effective. He explains how they finally worked on a solution for this challenge, and you can find the details from the podcast. During the initial stages of the venture, their customers paid for the services upfront. George says his co-founders enjoyed a great reputation which explains why many of their customers trusted them. With continued automation of the Dover platform, George says their prices have become more affordable. He envisions a time when Dover will be the face of great products. He gives his definition of a great product in this podcast. Listen in to find out. At some point, George explains his journey building the SaaS product from scratch. He says the process was manual and taxing. Together with his co-founders, they had to peruse through more than 1,000 resumes. This is an interesting part of the podcast that every aspiring entrepreneur should not miss. Amid major struggles, George and his team managed to develop and automate their core technology. George says recruiters can get candidates from three different sources, which he explains in detail. He also mentions how they collaborate with other channels to attract potential candidates. Listen to the podcast for more details. Regarding building the MVP, George mentions that they acquired customers before getting any funding. Together with his co-founders, they built their inaugural MVP amongst themselves. It was not until they understood the problem that they began investing more energy in developing a follow-up solution. He explains how they survived the initial stages seeing that all of them (co-founders) had resigned from their current positions. George says they cut a different niche than what is the norm in the industry. Unlike many developers who focus on development before knowing the solution, they wanted to establish their target user needs. The team focused on understanding their end solution first before embarking on development. Listen to George as he explains how the idea of acquiring user feedback worked for them. When did George and his team get their big break? He says they hit 60k in around four months. They decided to focus more on product development at some point, and it is around that time that Dover started growing exponentially. Following the Covid uncertainty across the world, Dover lost a chunk of its users. As people started working remotely, their numbers started growing, and they managed to keep the platform afloat. Listen to this podcast to understand how Dover grew in the midst of the pandemic and what they are doing to maintain the growth. George concludes the podcast with his top tips for a successful hiring process, which you do not want to miss. Resources Dover.com George Carollo LinkedIn

Few writers' words and ideas are abused daily on the Internet as much as George Orwell's – and now most of his work is out of copyright. On the anniversary of Eric Blair's death, we present a champion Orwell-off. Dorian Lynskey, author of The Ministry Of Truth, talks to DJ Taylor, author of Orwell: The Life, about Blair's underrated works and over-cited quotes, David Bowie's 1984: The Musical, and why Orwell would have baulked at the modern misuse of “Orwellian”. “Orwell's life and legend now fit perfectly the roles we've created for them.” – DJ Taylor“Words have been so redefined now that ‘Orwellian' is routinely used as the opposite of everything that Orwell stood for.” – DJ Taylor“Orwell was an imperfect man of his time, and very good at dramatising his own life.” – DJ Taylor“Orwell hated writing film reviews so much that he paid his friend Inez Holden to go and watch the plays for him.” – DJ Taylor“Anthony Powell used to say ‘How George would have loved to be a poet killed in the war…'.” – DJ TaylorPresented by Dorian Lynskey. The path to a career in trades is not a one-size-fits-all trajectory. For my friend George Bergey, he didn't jump on the college train or head straight into trade school. Instead, he joined the Marines, built up some of his skills, and then began his career in trades years after his high school graduation. Now, he’s worked his way up from carpentry apprenticeship to working as the Project Superintendent for Hunter Roberts Construction Group. In this episode, George details his experience transitioning from Marines to the trades, including what it was like to take certification tests and find his first job. He shares why he chose carpentry over other trades, what his day-to-day looks like, and how he’s keeping his team safe during these COVID times. We also bust the myth that college is the pathway to success, and why working in trades is a great way to make a living. Tune in to hear more about George’s professional journey from Marine to Project Superintendent! Some Questions I Ask: How did you get started in the trades? (4:28)What responsibilities fall under the jurisdictional work that carpenters do? (10:49)Did you ever consider any other trades? (15:21)What are the procedures like regarding COVID on the big job that you’re managing right now? (28:00)If I were to take your Jeep or boat away, which one would get you more upset? (31:07)In This Episode You Will Learn: What George’s transition from the Marines to trades was like. (4:40)What is a roadman? (8:58)Why George chose carpentry as his civilian career. George Hillman all the way from New Jersey is our guest today. Since 1994, George has been recording and performing his unique style of Christian music that's a blend of pop-rock and R&B. George is a producer and has helped engineer, and produce songs for local, regional, and widely known Christian artists, such as singer-songwriter, Gary Oliver, guitarist Mike Deasey of The Wrecking Crew Fame, Jason Alvarez, and Daniel M Stutz. George is also a pastor at a Bloomfield, New Jersey Ministry. If you've been blessed to hear one of his songs, then you can certainly agree that there's an uncompromising spiritual element that's present in every song that he's performed. I was really compelled to have George on the show after I listened to his song ‘In God We Trust'. How George became a Pastor. It was never in George's plan to walk in the path of being a shepherd of God's flock. While growing up with a love and passion for music, George started a Bible Study Group in his local church. With the church experiencing immense growth as a result of the Bible Study started by George, the church pastor decided to ordain him. As a pastor, George has a particular liking for people who struggle with being in terms of the church principles, because he also went through a similar experience while growing up. Life-changing moment. As a band playing in his local church. George as a youth was going through a phase where he felt disconnected to the church. After performing at a retreat centre in Upstate New York with his band, a young rebellious George walked off stage to relax and cool his thoughts down. He veered off and found himself in a quiet library in Upstate, New York. While at the library, George was drawn towards a particular book in the library - The Halley's Bible Handbook. On the cover page, the handbook had instructions directing the reader to turn to Page 83, the most important page in the book. After flipping to the page, George found himself in a verse by verse teaching section, with related case study examples. A reading experience that completely changed his understanding of the bible and its teachings. Fast Forward to a couple of years later, and George transferred to a church where verse by verse teaching was the mode of preaching. He's been using this method of bible study ever since. Church Culture. Part of what George struggles with in life is the modern church culture, where many churches make people dependent on them. Churches are building an addiction where the congregants can only worship and find peace in the church buildings. This complex culture is in contrast with early churches started by the Acts of the Apostles who had a more simple and straightforward approach of defining a church as the congregants, rather than the building and tools inside the building. As Christians, we should question the kind of relationship we want to build with God and focus more on how we can strengthen our bond between us and Him. In times like these, it's even more important to put our trust in God because of the greatness that he's done for us since the dawn of creation. Gratitude is the key to being happy and fulfilled in life. Be grateful and give thanks to the little or big that God has provided for you. I was fascinated by the craft of making music. I'd spend hours listening to the stereo and my curiosity to understand how music is made is what drove me towards being an artist. Engineering music is part of the magical process of producing great music. It starts when you write the lyrics alongside the vibe that you want your chords to communicate. Engineering is what ends the process, and helps get your message across. As Christians, it's important we understand that loving God isn't enough. We should also stretch our love to other people, despite their beliefs or background. Verse by verse teaching was a game-changer for me. It helped me as a Christian to have a clear and better understanding of the bible and its teachings. The fact of the matter is that we all need God and His grace. I find it very wonderful that He has made Himself available to each and every one of us when we need him. And that's what inspired me to write the song “In God We Trust”. Ministry is every single thing you do as a Christian musician. So get into a relationship with God and let your whole life and music be inspired by Him. Selected Links and Mentions. Today’s guest is George Aye, the co-founder of Greater Good Studio and an Adjunct Full Professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. We talk about creating a design studio driven by social impact, how to make facing the hard, ethical questions part of how a team functions, and what it means to design and lead with a deep awareness of power and its absence. Dawan Stanford, is your podcast host. Show Summary George’s path to design began in England, where he studied mechanical engineering at university before being fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to work with IDEO in their Chicago office. It meant packing up and moving overseas. For George, his time with IDEO was pivotal, both to his understanding of what design was, but also for what it felt like to work as part of a world-class team. During his time at IDEO, George was already noticing questions about the work, why we do it, and why certain projects — those with a clear social mission — engendered very different feelings in him than those without that mission. He wondered how he might focus this work on the social mission projects. Seven years on, he would leave IDEO to work at the Chicago Transit Authority, where he designed a bus and researched bus ridership. When the political environment shifted and he was let go from the CTA, George started teaching at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was here that his idea for a design studio focused solely on the social sector began to take shape. Since co-founding Greater Good Studio, George has continued to ask the hard questions, and encourages his team and his students to do the same. George talks about why these questions are important, the dynamics of power and how it can offer insight into people’s motivations and behaviors, and how to incorporate these discussions into the daily functioning of your design team. Listen in to learn: Some of the ethical questions George and his team tackle when approaching a potential project with a client Why it’s a good thing to always be asking “What are we doing, and why?” How questioning assumptions is essential for good decision-making The importance of creating a “psychologically safe” workplace George’s thoughts about power and understanding how it shapes behavior and outcomes Ways to bring learned expertise and lived experience together in teaching design Why the idea of “saving people” is problematic Our Guest’s Bio George co-founded Greater Good Studio with the belief that design can help advance equity. Previously, he spent seven years at global innovation firm IDEO before being hired as the first human-centered designer at the Chicago Transit Authority. Since founding Greater Good, he has worked across complex social issues such as criminal justice, civic engagement, public education, public health and youth development. He speaks frequently across the US and internationally. George holds the position of Adjunct Full Professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. We have a really special episode of the podcast in store for you today. In it, we sit down with a remarkable entrepreneur named George Papazov. Now, you might recognize his name because we actually featured George in a Customer Success Story last year. George is a expert stock trader & teacher, online entrepreneur, and successful MemberMouse customer. He runs a membership site called TRADEPRO Academy and teaches his members everything they need to know to become an effective stock trader. Since the last time we spoke to George, he and his team have doubled the lifetime customer value of their members and tripled their revenue. How did they do this? To make a long story short, they use the power of the MemberMouse Advanced Reporting Suite to get specific metrics and high-leverage business insights. George and his team then strategically use this information to improve their marketing, member engagement, and product offerings. While this might seem simple and straightforward on paper, the reality is a bit more complex. As you'll discover in this episode, it's not quite enough to know your metrics and KPI's... you need to DO something with them to grow. In our conversation, we dive deep into many interesting topics like: -How George strategically designed and developed his membership site -The specific ways he uses metrics to intelligently grow his business -His attitude towards risk, opportunity, and ego -And much more! We're grateful for everything George shared in this episode and can't wait for you to listen to it. We hope you enjoy it and walk away with an insight or two that can help you succeed in life or business.

I was joined by George Barnes who is one of the founders of Hamilton Barnes. George's mindset and approach to Recruitment really impressed me. It comes with no surprise that he has built a really successful recruitment business in Hamilton Barnes. He made this decision in his early 20's and hasn't looked back since. The business is nearly 5 years old and he now has ambitious plans to grow the UK team and conquer the USA. I loved George's genuine passion for people which really shines through in this episode and it's clear he has built a people first business. We dive into a number of topics but to highlight a few. - Having a clear structure is everything. - People first. Period. - How George keeps his Chi in order with Meditation. - How he has maintained his billings whilst managing and running his own agency. Plus much more, really enjoyed this chat with George and I hope you all will too!

With a team of over 1,100 across multiple states, George Morris has leveraged leadership, talent and the idea that you can do anything for one day. What are the practices and fundamentals behind his team’s success, and what can agents trying to move to the next level learn? Our company is built on the premise that I can do something for at least a day, and if I can put enough of those days together, I can make a great month and a great quarter. -George Morris Takeaways + Tactics Most of us are comparing ourselves to other people, but the real measuring stick is what you've done against what you could have done. The key to exponential growth is leadership - duplicating yourself by creating leaders who create leaders. Commission and value are always in proportion. If there’s a high level of value based on who you are to a client, you’re going to get the commission you want. On this episode we discussed: How George’s Everest Group got started How he built his company on the premise of doing anything for one day The leadership vision he has for his team Why it’s easier to do 100 deals than 25 deals The connection between value and commission Helpful books and resources The only way an organization becomes invaluable is when it helps people get to the next level of their lives. George Morris built his business on the drive to build up from one good day, and grew his team organically on the principle of setting one appointment a day. The ability to systematize and continuously duplicate leadership fundamentals has also been key. This stays in line with the greater mission of the company; helping every individual and agent become their best. If you’re looking to build a team of any size, this episode will be incredibly helpful and motivating! Guest Bio George Q. Food matters. Eating food is one of the most intimate things that we’ll ever experience in life. You are literally taking something from outside of yourself and deciding (consciously or unconsciously) to make it a part of you. If we’re asleep to the real power of food, we won’t realize that every-single-thing we eat is changing every-single-cell in our bodies. Your genes, your DNA, your upwards of 100 trillion cells, are all in action to convert that chosen food into more you. Now, here’s the real kicker of the situation… You get to CHOOSE what you’re made out of. You can make yourself out of the most vitalizing, storied, health-giving foods in the world - or you can make yourself out of Honey Buns, Fruit Loops, Cheetos, and Skittles. Grass-fed steak, bananas, or bagels… the choice is always up to you. Now, that can be incredibly empowering, or incredibly scary depending on where your mindset is at. Navigating this world of food today takes a special kind of awareness and heart. That's why we brought on our special guest today, because he’s all heart, he developed awareness through experience, and he can make you a meal that will bring tears to your eyes (like that single tear rolling down your cheek seen only in a movie scene). Our guest today is New York Times bestselling author George Bryant (also known as the man behind Civilized Caveman Cooking). Today is going to be a real treat because the Civilized Caveman himself is here to share his story and his secrets with you. We’re going to talk about our crucial relationship with food, overcoming eating disorders, deeply impacting the lives of others, recipes that will change your life, plus a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: How you can be a master in the kitchen in a lot less time than you think. Why a “degree” is not the solution to helping people. Why the food you make yourself and your family matters more than anything. What a triggering event means in relationship to eating disorders. What some of the symptoms of bulimia really are. How George was able to finally overcome bulimia (this is a powerful story!) Why authenticity, congruency, and vulnerability are essential to long-term success. How to make S.M.A.R.T. commitments to yourself and others. Why it’s important to speak up in order to gain support in our lives. How our relationship with food shapes our life. Why an obsession with eating healthy can also be problematic. How our perception of food creates our experience of eating. What some of the Civilized Caveman’s favorite recipes are (you don’t want to miss this!) Items mentioned in this episode include: * Onnit.com/Model
Episode 43 *Spoiler alert- this is my favourite episode ever. Period.* George Bryant is the man behind the wildly popular Paleo food blog “Civilized Caveman Cooking Creations” as well as New York Times Best-Selling author of The Paleo Kitchen. After spending the first 20-something years of his life in a constant battle with his weight, and then nearly losing both his legs while on deployment as a US Marine, George took matters into his own hands and began his own Paleo journey. What started as a simple place to post recipes for friends has since turned into an award-winning food blog. After being in the Marines for 12 years, George has since been medically separated and is enjoying working full time creating delicious Paleo recipes, while hoping to change as many lives for the better by making REAL food recipes simple and tasty. What's unique about George is not only that he overcame a serious injury with his legs, but that he suffered from body dysmorphia and an eating disorder. George is brave in so many ways. His courage and strength never fails to impress me and I can confidently say we can all learn so much from him. Here's what we talk about in today's episode: Why George is so open about his experiences with body dysmorphia and eating disorders His powerful "minute of truth" practice George's legs blowing up, being shot at, his concussions and seeing dead bodies- and how he still sheds tears over it all from a place of love No matter who you are or where you go, there will be opposition How people project their own insecurities onto others and how to approach it The root of so many body image and eating disorders Being present to societal pressures How George's fiance has made personal development possible for him Power comes from acknowledgment There never needs to be a logical explanation for feeling what you feel Tapping Not feeling like your story is worthy What you resist, persists. The number one thing George's friends did for him that allowed him to come out about his eating disorder George's favourite recipe from his cookbook Connect with George: Website Facebook Twitter Get his cookbook >> The Paleo Kitchen Sign up for the upcoming Ditching Metabolic Damage Webinar with Matt Stone and Maddy Moon!
