“My whole goal in life is to have that connection with people.”—  Tara Stiles‘Yoga Rebel' and Strala founder Tara Stiles has inspired millions of people around the world to fall in love with yoga, meditation, and nutrition. In this episode, she'll inspire you to stretch your ambitions. When Tara first got interested in yoga, she wondered why others around her weren't, and started trying to figure out the misconceptions or fears holding them back. She began talking about yoga more as a way to feel better than as something difficult to be mastered. Her entrepreneurial journey started with a blog, a studio, and a very early YouTube channel in 2007, back when YouTube was primarily cat videos. She drew from her dance background and offered a freer, less rigid style of yoga — with a sense of humour. As she grew, she developed partnerships, began offering teacher trainings, and eventually licensing the Strala name to other studios. Now, she has books, an app, and a clothing line, and her instructors lead classes in 15 countries to thousands of people.Learn how she grew an empire aligned with her values and goals! In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode,‌ ‌you'll discover:‌ ‌How Tara transformed her passion for yoga into a wellness business empire Why she doesn't regret turning down venture capital funding — and believes in the power of slowing downHow to get back into yoga (without feeling intimidated)About Tara StilesTara Stiles is an American model turned yoga instructor and founder of Strala Yoga in New York City. We're talking about building your team today. Have you experienced a nightmare with hiring or managing a team member? Or are you imagining a future nightmare because of what you've heard from your peers? Are you confused about what role you should be hiring for? Or whether it's time to hire? Our guest, Tara McMullin, leads 2 successful companies, and she's about to share her experiences building and managing both of those teams. A bonus treat for me is that she's an introvert, like me, so we get to lean into some particular challenges and solutions for introverted bosses. If you want to hear an earlier episode with Tara from 2 years ago, head to episode 102, which I'll link in the show notes. Tara McMullin is a business strategist, podcaster, writer, and producer. She's the founder & host of What Works, a platform for small business owners building stronger businesses. She's also the co-founder of YellowHouse.Media, a podcast production agency that helps small business owners produce standout podcasts to grow their businesses. Here's some of what we talked about: How she has found her team members without the traditional pathways Why Tara and I agree that you probably shouldn't use a VA agency Finding low-energy and effective ways to introduce your new hire to your company Documenting your processes will help you with onboarding team members Why we should think about operations within our business and products as having huge overlap The liberation Tara experienced when she started hiring employees instead of contractors How the responsibility of running a team helps Tara show up in her business the way she wants to Strategies Tara uses to take time away from her team to do deep work Why you should create an organizational chart even if you're a company of one right now How Tara thinks about whether it's time for you to hire someone or simplify your business Why you might want to hire an extrovert if you're an introvert! Here are some takeaways that particularly stand out to me: Takeaway #1: The team member you are looking for is probably already in your orbit. Tara has found her team members by looking to people she already knew or who were in her network. Takeaway #2: Document everything repeatable that you do in your company so that you can easily share it with a team member. We talked about using the platforms Notion, Clickup, and Google Docs, and most of all, using video through a platform like loom. Takeaway #3: Switching from hiring contractors to hiring employees made a big difference in Tara's experience within her company. She noticed an unexpected level of liberation and feeling supported by her team. Takeaway #4: Even if you're a company of one now, Tara recommends making an organizational chart. That will help you see that you are actually doing many jobs, and it will help you to organize your time, respect your energy limits, and get ready to hire your next team member. Those are 4 of my takeaways. What stood out to you? Did this conversation help you avoid a hiring mistake? Are you thinking differently about your business? Are you surprised by how many jobs you're actually doing? Send me an email at info@coachingwithannie.com. Even better, include a voice memo so I can share your voice on the pod.   What have you overcomplicated in your business recently?   Are you trying to solve problems by adding more to your plate rather than taking something off?   It’s not just you. There’s a human tendency to add and look for more things to do whenever we have a problem that needs solving, when subtraction might be the best solution.   Add a culture where what we do is who we are, and overwork is treated as equivalent to good work, and it’s easy to see how that tendency gets amplified.   On today’s episode I’m excited to have badass business owner, Tara McMullin.   Tara McMullin is a coach, community builder, podcaster, producer, and writer. She’s the founder of What Works, a digital platform for small business owners who are building strong, resilient and sustainable companies.   AND she’s the co-founder of Yellow House Media, which you might recognize from the credits at the end of this show every week. That’s right, that’s how I know Tara, because her company is the reason I have a podcast every week.   She’s a brilliant thinker, writer, strategist, she has her own podcast, What Works, which has been downloaded over 2 million times, she’s an international speaker and she’s been featured in Fast Company, Forbes, Inc, and The Huffington Post.   I’m delighted to share this conversation with you where we go deep on topics around being overworked business owners, what it really takes to find that freedom and flexibility and how simplicity is usually the answer to business challenges.   Tune into this episode to hear: How Tara is simplifying her social strategy by only posting “remarkable” content, and how it’s working Why the question, “who are you without the doing?” totally knocked her for a loop How building structures in your business that reject overwork can only take you so far if you’re not doing deep work to shift your mindset How knowing what values motivate you can help you lean into your strengths and identify your weaknesses   Learn more about Tara McMullin: What Works What Works Podcast Yellow House Media Standout Podcast Club Instagram: @tara_mcmullin   Learn more about Pia: No BS Agency Owners Free Facebook Group The Show Your Business Who's Boss Crash Course Start reading the first chapter of my book Piasilva.com   Resources: Can't Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation, Anne Helen Petersen The Ezra Klein Show: Tressie McMillan Cottom on the Moral Panics of Our Moment Hurry Slowly Podcast: Who Are You Without the Doing? Host: Dr. Tara EganCo-host: Anna, teen daughterToday we are discussing characteristics of screen addiction in kids and teens. Do you suspect your child or teen has a screen addiction? Tune in as Tara and Anna discuss the warning signs. Screens, such as those associated with cell phones, tablets, computers, and videos games, are designed to elicit a release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in our brain, which results in a euphoric feeling and drives us to spend more and more time on screens. Tara started off the discussion by sharing some general recommendations from the American Pediatric Association about screen time and kids. She shares the guidelines of screen time usage from 0-18 yrs old.We dive into:How Tara feels that Discord is not the best app for kids. How YouTube may be the most misunderstood app because it impacts kids ability to have sustained attention because everything is fast-moving, rolls from one video to the next, and each video is high-interest and brief. She offers suggestions on how parents can support their kids in maintaining their sustained attention, and expresses concerns about kids using technology as a self-soothing strategy.  She answers the question: who is most at risk for screen addiction?Symptoms of screen addiction:- Kids want to spend more time and even replace real life friends with online friends.- It is interfering with daily activities -not wanting to attend family dinner or shower, or get homework done. These kids often display moodiness or outbursts when asked to transition away from tech devices.  - They are showing emotional symptoms  - their conversations revolve around being away from their technology, they will say that screen time is the main activity that brings them happiness, and if they are not engaging in screen time, they will act resistant, unhappy and miserable. - Getting less physical exercise.- Disturbed sleep.- Conflict in the home and power struggles, including sneaky behavior, not respecting parental controls, and expressing resentment about technology time. - Strategies to reduce screen time are unsuccessful. If any of this information sounds like your kid (or even yourself), reach out to a professional. Being human is messy and imperfect—and, we’re bound to make mistakes.  It’s part of the deal. We’re not going to get everything right, every time.  But we learn as we go.  That’s what being human is all about.  For some, being human—the messiness of it—is totally anxiety-provoking. Antiques expert, designer, and author Tara Shaw joins the show to share her passion for antiques and how to decorate with them in our homes. She talks about sourcing antiques, steps for bringing beautiful pieces in our space, and the inspiration behind her new book Soul of the Home: Designing with Antiques. What You’ll Hear On This Episode: Tara’s new book, Soul of the Home: Designing with Antiques ties in education about designing with antiques and explanations of how furniture that is both old and modern can work together. Take it from us, it will be the kind of book you want to bring out on a relaxing morning and savor with a cup of coffee. Tara’s amazing story of how she made the transition from antique importer to working on Harry Connik Jr.’s home in Connecticut, and how the experience of “doing it afraid” opened the door to take on new clients. How she went to school for education, worked in apparel, and ended up in antiques. What an exponent is, and why personal carvings are so special when shopping for the right antique piece. How Tara’s suggestion of purchasing one nice piece a year can really lead to an entire home of beautiful antiques after some time. Tara’s real confessions on what she keeps for herself, and how she decides just what items she can’t live without personally. Why Tara loves mid-century and how to effortlessly mix different styles of furniture. Why she buys mid century and its a good thing to mix with antiquity so it doesn’t feel stale. A glimpse into Tara’s process of shopping for antique items and bringing them home for her now sought after container parties. Start with one room and an anchor piece. Take a minute to find your voice and be fearless to execute it. How her love of canopy beds and hand forging them keeps artisans in New Orleans employed. Mentioned In This Episode: Tara Shaw Soul of the Home @tarashawdesign Matthew Carter Interiors Decorating Dilemma: We love that you encompass exactly what talk about in this episode - you know what you like and you are fearless about it! This room screams pink and green to Tara, a Palm Beach look that is congruent with the Lily Pulitzer type fabric. It would also look more bespoke if you found trim that you could trim your draperies with, and use a drapery hook with pointy edge rings instead of a clip. Some art that can thread the colors in together would be great, and we love the pink chair.

She encourages women to do the inner work on themselves, embrace the fact that therapy is necessary, not taboo, and understand that strong women will change the world. Tune in to discover: How Tara crushed her limiting beliefs to transition from her traditional corporate background to her spiritual coaching work Her early experience with yoga training and how she distanced herself from voices of criticism How her travels around the world shaped her spiritual development and knowledge of her work The changes that made her decide to fully immerse herself in her business One thing that irritates her about the coaching industry Why you can’t help and teach others before you have done the work on yourself Why the crisis will create the change What she thinks her gutsiest and most creative move has been so far   About Our Guest: Tara is a Master Business Coach & Feminine Embodiment Mentor, creator of the Online Temple School for the Divine Feminine, the High Ticket Empress Business Course, a podcast host, and facilitates workshops and intensives around the world. Have you heard the term “call and response”? When I hear the phrase, I think of preachers, especially in black churches, who use it to engage their parishioners and uplevel the energy in the room. As speakers, we can use call and response to heighten energy and emotion with our audiences and get them to participate more in the experience. (See episode 113 on E.P.I.C. content for some examples.) But, have you thought about using this idea of “call and response” on social media? I certainly hadn’t until I saw a post by my guest, Tara McMullin, in her What Works online community that I’m a member of. Here’s what’s interesting about Tara’s idea: We assume we’re creating the “call” with our social media posts and content. However, what if our posts are the response to the question that’s already in the minds of our audience. Our goal is to seek out the call from our audience and respond to it, not the other way around. Mind-shifting, isn’t it? In this episode, Tara and I talk about: The business model of her What Works community and how it evolved from what she had before How this idea of call and response is influencing what Tara is doing on social media The impact, engagement, and results Tara has seen with this fresh approach, especially on Instagram As a marketer, we need to think of what the questions (calls) our audiences/prospective clients have What I’m currently doing on social media How Tara approaches the content she creates for speaking engagements   I was curious about where the phrase "call and response" originated, so I did some searching: “Call and response is deeply embedded into African-American musical traditions including blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, and hip-hop. The phrasing is a musical conversation—a statement made by a musician or group musicians is answered by a response. Call and response comes from Sub-Saharan African cultures and developed in America through slave work songs and field hollers, spirituals, and blues.” (Source: https://stevetres.com/2016/01/5-types-of-call-and-response-phrases/)   This episode is sponsored by Modern Traction, a web development and content marketing company. No longer dealing with addiction to sweets and that guilty feeling of letting your body down, sounds nice right? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from business leader and entrepreneur, Tara Bosch. In her conversation with Jeremy, Tara opens up about why she started SmartSweets, how she began the production process, challenges she faced along the way, what it took to expand the team, and much more. Don’t miss a minute of this compelling and engaging episode featuring Tara’s story!  Do you have that one person in your corner who you can count on day in and day out? Maybe for you, it’s a parent or childhood friend. What challenges has that person helped you through? For business leader Tara Bosch, the person who was there to encourage her along the way was her grandmother. Tara fondly looks back at the time she spent with her grandmother and points to their mutual love of sweets that led her to start SmartSweets in the first place. Not only is it a good idea to stop and remember those who have helped you on your journey, but it’s also a good idea to consider who you can do the same for.  While it’s helpful to have family members and mentors in your corner, the one constant through your whole life will the be the person you see in the mirror. How do you treat yourself? Do you give yourself enough slack? Do you challenge yourself enough? One important lesson that Tara Bosch has learned on her journey is the value of keeping your self-talk positive. Often the business leader can be their own worst critic, take it easy on yourself! Think of inner dialogue as your number one fan, not your number one critic. This simple mindset shift can have a significant impact on your chances of success both personally and professionally.  Let’s face it; the average American is hooked on sugar, it’s almost as ubiquitous as salt! From salads to cereal, sugar is in much of the food you eat. What do you do if you want to kick sugar from your diet? How do you do that while still enjoying deserts and snacks? SmartSweets created the first candy that kicks sugar naturally. Their snacks are free from added sugar, sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners. Every ingredient they use is non-GMO, always real and never artificial. Make sure to check out the link to the SmartSweets website located in the resources section at the end of this post to learn more! Have you found that one thing that lights you up? Are you able to pursue that passion professionally? Tara Bosch knew that starting a business selling sugar-free candy was a huge risk, but she jumped in head first because she knew it was what she was meant to do. Tara started SmartSweets after her love affair with candy turned into an unhealthy relationship with food. She experienced the adverse effects sugar has on our health, and she wanted to be part of the solution. This venture was far from easy for Tara; she struggled for months recipe testing in her kitchen with a gummy bear mold from Amazon until she finally found the right formula. The challenges only increased from there, but Tara was committed and saw the process through. Now SmartSweets is a thriving business moving forward and helping people finally kick sugar from their diet. When you’re striving for recognition as an industry expert, you pull out all the stops. Some even sacrifice their authentic selves just for a sliver of the spotlight. But what if there was a way to gravitate people toward you without having to sell out…or sell yourself?   Tara Bradford is an expert at helping others stand out so publicity and opportunities come to them. In this episode, she connects the dots of her journey from nurse to high-performance coach to founding her PR firm, Potentialista — and how she blossomed into a natural media magnet by planting the right seeds in the right landscapes.   Episode Topics How Tara’s makeup tutorials strengthened a marriage Using uniqueness as strength and being different on purpose Breaking into established groups in a new town How to become a magnet and get people to come to you first Building a solid network from complete scratch How Tara met Oprah and got featured on Dr. Oz → (almost) What holds people back from getting more media for themselves Leveraging deep connections and building a personal brand How Tara attracted clients without having to sell herself Common misconceptions about being featured in the media How Tara’s business coach inspired her coaching career Landing clients through social media and guest blogs Tara’s coaching certification program recommendations Challenges of moving and being the odd one out Building relationships and word of mouth referrals Taking the first step, vulnerability, and how it inspires others to help   [3:58] Starting line: While she worked as a nurse, Tara started a side-hustle recording makeup tutorials.   [6:02] Realizing potential: She started getting good feedback from the videos including one woman who thanked her for helping her marriage.   [7:27] Hiring a coach: When she moved to New York, she worked with a business coach to help monetize her YouTube channel. But really, he improved her mindset.   [8:50] Supportive network: Friends took notice of Tara's newfound confidence and encouraged her to teach others her ways.   [10:24] Discovering passion: By the time she was done working with the coach, she wanted to be a coach and make a bigger impact.   [13:46] First mentor: She met a serial entrepreneur who invited her to networking events but she refused —she never saw herself as an entrepreneur.   [15:19] Paradigm shift: After a fateful conversation, Tara began viewing herself through other people’s eyes. “That’s when I learned more about personal branding and solving problems for my target audience.”   [17:21] At a crossroads: Signed up for coaching certification not knowing if she’d pursue it as a business. She had 2 weeks to find her own NY apartment, a job, and inform her grad school she wasn't coming.   [18:24] August 2017: One month after she found an apartment and landed a hospital admin job, she launched her coaching practice.   [20:38] A walkthrough of Tara’s 10-week coaching certification program.   [21:49] Featured on Dr. Oz…kind of: Although Tara wasn’t sure how to market herself, she was featured in the media every 2 weeks including on the Dr. Oz show. After her segment was bumped, she started exploring PR.   [24:35] Seeing opportunity: She recognized the need to help people get publicity after being asked how she did it. One year into her entrepreneurial journey, Tara began doing PR for people.   [27:49] Getting clients: All of her clients found her through social media, her website or guest blogs. "I never had to actually sell anything. People just came to me and said ‘I wanna work with you’."   [29:17] The evolution of Potentialista: How Tara connected the dots between previous experiences and what she does for clients today.   [32:07] Attention magnet: She put herself in situations where she could be a magnet for conversations that she's afraid to start herself.   [32:53] Building a network from scratch: Attended events with established groups where she’d be the odd woman out. People wanted to hear her story. "When you put yourself out there and make yourself different on purpose, people want to help you achieve your goal."   [42:09] How Tara uses Potentialista to help people build their ideal reputation.   [45:10] “People think they can't be featured in the same publication twice and that's holding them back from getting more for themselves.”   [47:28] Be vulnerable: “Doing something brave, courageous, and vulnerable is what makes people wanna help you…they think ‘wow you're really putting yourself out there in a way I could never or have never done. I admire that and wanna be a part of it.”     Connect with Tara: Tararaebradford.com Thepotentialista.com     Subscribe to the Experts Unleashed YouTube Channel for exclusive video trainings and content. I am in awe when it comes to the resilience of the human spirit and body, and today’s guest, Tara Mackey, just reaffirms my belief. With a tumultuous childhood that lead to a drug prescription at the young age of 13 subsequent prescriptions thereafter, it’s not surprising that Tara once came close to ending her own life. However, seven years ago, she finally realized that the help she sought didn’t come in an orange bottle or from the people who she’d allowed into her life. She knew the drugs (and diagnoses) were holding her back and as a result, she quit all 14 drugs cold-turkey (she doesn’t advise this method) and hasn’t looked back since.   Tara now takes pride in educating others to get off drugs and even more in helping people recognize what’s holding them back and then guiding them to create new habits that propel them forward. I resonate so deeply with Tara’s message as she also truly believes that we all are put on this planet with a purpose. And once we’re able to pinpoint the habits that are holding us back we can then create replacement habits and finally tap into our own intuition and purpose. Tara’s new book, “WILD Habits,” even walks you through the steps to do just that.   I think everyone will relate on some level to this episode and I can’t wait to hear all of the takeaways from this episode and her soon-to-be-released book.   --      Question Highlights: What do you do now and how did you get started on that path? At what point did your intuition start talking to you and tell you to do something different? What were some of the most influential experiences in your life that got you to those moments? Can you explain what you mean when you say “numb?” What do you share with people around what it really looks like when you step into the journey of your purpose? Growing up, were there influences in your life that sparked a feeling of purpose and reminded you of who you were? What were some of your labels and how did you get over them? Do you have any labels now that have come with success that hold you up to some expectation? How do we change out our habits and what does that look like? How do we begin to make the space to follow the WILD Method steps? What was your focus for energy in your book? Do you believe everyone on the planet has a purpose?   In This Episode We Talk about: How Tara got off drugs and now helps educate people to do the same How Tara helps people recognize what’s holding them back and then create new habits that propel them forward Why harmful habits are all distractions from your true purpose The importance of recognizing what you’re using to numb out Labels How drugs impact your labels and your behavior Why it’s OK to change and grow all the time Tara’s WILD Method Listening to your intuition The mind/body connection The importance of movement What toxicity in all forms looks like Why it’s important to step away from judgment and criticism How social media distracts us from our true purpose Figuring out what to put your energy toward And so much more…   Quotes “I wanted help but help hadn’t come in the form of orange bottles or the people that I had let in.”   “We numb because we’re afraid of living up to our full potential.”   “Focus on adding up the moments that bring us joy because that brings us closer to who we truly are.”   “People will know you as whatever you do in that moment.”   “It’s not weird that you’re changing and growing all the time.”   “If you’re not moving your body other things get stagnant.”   “Become more conscious of why you’re doing what you’re doing.”   --   Tara Mackey is the best-selling author of Cured by Nature, a soul singer and global motivational speaker. She is the Founder and CEO of The Organic Life, recognized as one of the Healthiest Companies of the Year. Tara has been honored as Woman of the Year and named one of San Diego’s Most Admired CEOs of 2017. Mackey travels the world as an activist, inspiring people to make bold and brave moves, take actions to live their dreams and create a more sustainable and empowered world.   Her next book, WILD Habits: Unlock Your Mind, Improve Your Health and Release Your True Power (SelectBooks, Inc. May 8, 2018) shares all of the specific mental practices and natural home remedies Tara uses in her own life for a healthy spirit, mind, and body.   Tara studied biology and worked as an MLT at Cornell before moving to California in 2011 to pursue her passions in health, acting and music. Tara began her blog and company, The Organic Life, in 2012 to share her wellness journey. Mackey’s bohemian spirit, talent and drive has generated a booming, engaged and inspired following. Tara Bosch is a woman on a mission to kick sugar. In service of that mission, she and her team at SmartSweets make low sugar, non-chocolate confections... and really nothing else. The thinking is, if you can offer something that tastes like regular candy without all the sugar, you can break the cycle of sugar addiction that adversely affects so many people’s diet - and overall health. It all started with a heart-to-heart conversation between Tara and her grandmother. After years of enjoying sweets together, Tara was surprised to hear her grandmother say that consuming too much sugar was a major regret in her life, as it had taken a toll on her and her family's health. Whereas most people might have taken this information and perhaps changed their diet, this conversation sent Tara down a path of entrepreneurship. A week later she had a gummy candy mold, a candy thermometer, and was recipe testing in her kitchen. Her goal was nothing short of building the leading low-sugar confectionary brand on the planet. Oh, and by the way... she was still in college at this point. It's been a remarkable journey. In grade school Tara was known as the “Questioning Queen."  Being dyslexic, she had to find alternative ways to gain a deeper understanding of the subject at hand. Which meant asking “Why,” “How” and “What if” until the point of exhaustion. She owes these experiences to the reason why she values the importance of intellectual curiosity and encourages others to engage in this way of thinking.  In 2015, Tara graced the TEDx stage with her talk, Curiosity Saves the Cat.  Tara graduated from Oklahoma State University where she got her degree in Advertising and Strategic Communication. At her time at OSU she held a variety of leadership positions including Social Chair for her sorority, President of the Advertising Club and was the Account lead for the National Student Advertising Competition. Upon graduation she spent the first four years of her career at Tracylocke working on amazing brands like Pizza Hut, Samsung and Cattle Barons Ball. Tara has recently joined Bottle Rocket Studios, a mobile app development first that has created some of the highest quality apps in the world, as their newest Client Executive.  On this episode we discuss:  What Dyslexia is and how it affects the brain's ability to process information How Tara adapted her learning style to cope with Dyslexia  How Tara turned a learning “disability” into a superpower  The importance of intellectual curiosity  The TEDx application process and her full TEDx experience  Important takeaways from Unleash the Power Within - Anthony Robbins Seminar What she learned from walking barefoot across 2,000 degree coals

She also shares her typical day and the most important things she does to stay focused on her mission. Knowing when to let go. Another essential step in the healing process is letting go. Tara explains the value of letting go of what no longer serves you and the importance of taking inventory of your life. She says you must evaluate the things you need to release in order to create the life you want. Tara also discusses the role of prayer, meditation, and exercise in her daily routine. She goes on to share some valuable insights you can implement to help you stay focused and on track with your goals. Find a way, because you’re worth it.
