Having lived in multiple countries, we discuss how artistic funding works in different places with the hilarious and talented Ruxy Cantir. “[One] of Scotland's leading visual theatre makers,” Ruxandra Cantir is a Moldova-born, US-trained, Glasgow-based physical theatre artist. Ruxy holds an MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre (Blue Lake, California). Since her graduation in 2013, Ruxy has devised and performed original work in a variety of styles all around the world, both in self-started projects, and as an invited artist in established companies. Recent notable productions include Storify and Unicorn Dance Party - two online series for young audiences for National Theatre of Scotland's Lockdown Family Programme, an outdoor theatre piece commission from the Hans Christian Andersen Festival in Denmark, and Draculala by LARDS - the much-anticipated first performance by a brand new ensemble made up of 5 of Scotland's finest physical comedians and visual theatre creators at Edinburgh's Manipulate Festival 2020. With a knack for the absurd and the grotesque, Ruxy most often works in the styles of Clown, Vaudeville, Physical Comedy, Storytelling, and Movement theatre. Why Listen: I'm so honored to have had time with Christian today I want to give a little bit of backstory that I give at the start of the interview but I think it's worth recapping here. So, as many of you know we were fortunate to receive financial sponsorship from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. It allowed us to do a new series of interviews and so as Steve Bane and I were talking about who we wanted to interview, I realized that we haven't talked to anyone in the drone industry, and I think it's an industry that has a lot of interest for veterans - it's growing rapidly, it's cool, it's high tech. And so I did a little bit of searching and Steve sent me some articles and we looked for Veterans in this space. And I came across Christian. He was the only person I emailed and I just sent a cold email explaining what I do with Beyond the Uniform and asking if you'd be willing to be on the show. And I just want to bring that up first of all to say like, I was so energized and inspired by this conversation. And it all came about because of simply writing an email to another veteran. And I just want to bookmark that for all of you listening because I think great things come when you get out of your head when you get out of your comfort zone when you get out of your office or home and talk to people. And that's a major theme in today's interview and Kristen has a really brilliant man I think that will come across in his, his advice to listeners, but he in 1998 got out of the military went into tech, when tech was just or that you know that is software programming, and that was just becoming a thing. And I think that you'll learn a lot from his story, although it's, it's one of entrepreneurship it's one about the drone industry. It's really advice relevant to every career path, because his story demonstrates, time and time again, the value that comes from pursuing one's passion, the value that comes when you put aside money. At least temporarily to focus on adding value and learning, and also a story of how, when you get out of your comfort zone when you talk to people when you circulate ideas, great things come about. So we cover a lot of ground we talk about minimum viable product we talk about customer development. We talked about why you should never have an NDA that's a non disclosure agreement. We talk about leadership on it was just really exhilarating conversation and so I'm really honored to have had Christian on the show. About Christian: Christian Sanz is the CEO and Founder of Skycatch, the leading industrial aerial data collection and analytics company, focused on indexing and extracting critical information from the physical world. He served in the Navy for 4 years, and his civilian career includes work as a software engineer for The Walt Disney Company, a Senior Software Engineer at LoopNet, the Senior Director of Engineering at Break Media, the CTO at Kin Community, the Founding CTO of Storify (acquired by Adobe), and the Founder of DroneGames. Over the last 7 years, Christian has grown Skycatch to have over 50 employees and $46M in funding.

Der March for Science am 22. April 2017 hat auch in Deutschland ein großes Echo gefunden. Es gab Veranstaltungen in Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Frankfurt/Main, Freiburg/i.Br., Göttingen, Greifswald, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Helgoland, Jena, Kassel, Koblenz, Leipzig, München, Rostock, Stuttgart, Trier und Tübingen mit schließlich über 37.000 Teilnehmern. Unter dem Eindruck der Vorbereitungen auf den 22. April haben sich Gudrun Thäter und Annette Leßmöllmann zum Gespräch getroffen. Sie teilen das Interesse an den Fragen: Welche Rolle hat Wissenschaft in unserer Gesellschaft? Welche Rolle sollte sie haben? Wie nimmt Wissenschaftskommunikation darauf Einfluß? Dabei haben sie unterschiedliche Rollen und Erfahrungen, die im Gespräch zu einer persönlichen Einschätzung des Status quo und der Wünsche für die Zukunft zusammengeführt werden. Annette Leßmöllmann leitet die Abteilung Wissenschaftskommunikation im Institut für Germanistik des KIT, das heißt sie forscht und lehrt im Bereich Wissenschaftskommunikation. Ihr Interesse lässt sich kurz fassen als: Was nehmen die Konsumenten wissenschaftlicher Botschaften für ihren Alltag mit? Drei Gedanken stehen am Anfang des Gespräches: Die Rolle von Wissenschaft ist auch eine ökonomische Frage: Wer stellt Geld für Wissenschaft bereit und mit welchen Zielen? Was ist wissenschaftliches Erkennen und was ist ihr Vorteil als Sicht der Welt? Demokratie und Pressefreiheit sind nicht selbstverständlich. Tatsächlich wird die Arbeit mit Studierenden immer politischer, was sich erst kürzlich am großen Interesse am Vortrag von Michael Blume zum Themenfeld "Wahrheit" zeigte. Am Beispiel der Mathematik zeigen sich konträre Eintwicklungen. Einerseits durchlaufen alle in Deutschland eine mathematische Schulbildung von 10-13 Jahren und setzen das häufig in Ausbildung oder Studium fort. Gesellschaftlich akzeptiert ist jedoch die Aussage: "Das brauche ich später sowieso nicht..." Was noch nie zutreffend war, aber mit der aktuellen Entwicklung in Alltag und Technik immer unwahrer wird, denn fast jede/r muss mit Wahrscheinlichkeiten hantieren und Daten deuten, Kausalität von Korrelation unterscheiden, Entscheidungen beurteilen oder treffen, die auf Computer-Simulationen beruhen. Man bräuchte dafür auch psychologische Forschung, z.B. um den Umgang von Menschen mit Risikobotschaften besser zu verstehen. Denn wir treffen häufig sehr wichtige Entscheidungen unter Zeitdruck und mit nur teilweise zugänglichen Informationen. Dem trägt inzwischen auch ein von der DFG finanziertes Schwerpunktprogramm Rationalität Rechnung. Durchdringung der Berufswelt mit Hochtechnologie und Computern führt zu Monitorrückseitenberatung bei Banken/Reisebüros etc. inkl. dem Effekt "the computer says no". Damit wird Erfahrungs- und IInsiderwissen der klassischen Berufsausbildung in Deutschland entwertet. Anweisungen von Spezialisten sind schwerer durchschaubar für untergebene. Dies führt zu latenten Vorbehalten gegen gebildete Leute ("die wissen ja nichts sondern sind nur eingebildet") und einer gefühlten Benachteiligung. Gleichzeitig erfolgt eine versteckte Umverteilung des Vermögens von unten nach oben und damit eine echte Benachteiligung der Mehrheit. Technische und soziale Kompetenz greifen zusammen in der Nutzung moderner Medien. Es ändern sich auch die Formen von Gesprächen hierdurch. Wissenschaftskommunikation muss man deshalb auch auf die Art der Kommunikation der jungen Leute abstimmen.Man könnte diese Entwicklung doch auch dazu nutzen, um Beratung zu verbessern! Dazu bräuchten Mitarbeiter aber auch Spielraum und eine andere kommunikative Ausbildung. Es ändert auch die Arbeit im Journalismus, denn Nachrichten sind inzwischen überall verfügbar, aber das Einordnen und Wichten wird zum eigentlichen Spezialwissen. Eine wichtige Rolle kommt Modellen zu. Sie ermöglichen die Einordnung der Geschehnisse in der Welt in einen persönlichen Zusammenhang, d.h. genügend vereinfacht, um sie mit Sinn zu füllen und darüber kommunizieren zu können. Die Schulbildung müsste dem Rechnung tragen, ist aber strukturell unterfinanziert und als Beruf und Berufung ist das Lehramt nicht genug wert geschätzt. Auch Universitäten werden immer abhängiger von Geldgebern mit bestimmten eng gesteckten Zielen. Wenn offensichtliche Lügen wenig bis gar keine Konsequenzen haben, greift das die Position von rational begründeten Entscheidungen - also auch eine im Kern von wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen getragener Weltaneignung - an der Wurzel an. Als Wissenschaftlerinnen können wir das nur schwer ertragen. Was sind aber Fakten? In der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung geht es dabei stets um Interpretation von Daten und unterschiedliche Formen von Gewissheit. Was davon ist diskutabel oder überhaupt öffentlich diskutierbar? Als Menschen in der Forschung müssten wir außerhalb unserer Arbeitswelt offensiv für wissenschaftliche Kriterien werben. Wir müssen verstehen, wieso Leute Kraftposen so bewundernswert finden und rationale Diskussionen als "Liberales Getue" abwerten. Das ist unabhängig von Fakten sondern sehr emotional geprägt. Wir als Forscherinnen müssen verstehen, dass unser Fortschrittsglaube außerhalb der Wissenschaft in der Gesellschaft nicht geteilt. wird: "Meine Kinder werden es nicht so gut haben wie ich." Ich bin letzte Woche nach Berlin gefahren und war letztes Wochenende beim 5. Podlove Podcast Workshop. Da ich nach dem Podcast Workshop noch auf der re:publica war, teile ich meinen Berllinaufenthalt in zwei Teile. Hier geht es also erst mal nur um den Podlove Podcast Workshop. Über die re:publica, werde ich gesondert berichten. Am Freitag bin ich mit dem Fernbus nach Berlin gefahren und es ging am 1. Mai los. Der Preis des Tickets war ein wenig höher, als beim letzten Mal, aber das lag wahrscheinlich an den Feiertag, den wir am Freitag hatten. Ich habe EUR 46,-- gezahlt, was ich immer noch sehr günstig finde und das die Fahrt über 10 Stunden gedauert hat, finde ich akzeptabel, da ich mit dem Auto oder mit der Bahn auch 8 Stunden brauchen würde. Während der Fahrt, sind wir mal in eine Polizeikontrolle geraten, als wir kurz vor der thüringischen Landesgrenze waren, hat uns die bayrische Polizei angehalten. Einer der Fahrgäste, ein farbiger junger Mann, hatte keine gültigen Papiere dabei und mußte darauf aussteigen und durfte dann auch nicht mehr mitfahren. Durch die Kontrolle sind wir etwas verspätet in Berlin angekommen. Ich bin dann in Berlin mit der U-Bahn zur Haltestelle Gleisdreieck gefahren und ins Hotel gegangen. Nach dem ich dort eingecheckt hatte, bin ich dann auch gleich zum Workshop gegangen. Die Räumlichkeiten von Wikimedia, wo die Veranstaltung, stattgefunden hat, sind nur wenige Minuten von dem Hotel entfernt. Den Abend habe ich nicht mehr viel mitgenommen, ausser, daß ich erst mal alle Bekannten begrüsst habe und ich mich sehr darüber gefreut hatte, alle die ich schon vom letzten Workshop her kannte, wieder zu sehen. Mir sind leider nur wenige Sessions in Erinnerung geblieben, vielleicht weil sie für mich nicht so relevant sind, aber die, die für mich interessantesten waren, sind mir natürlich noch präsent. Es wurde z.B. darauf hingewiesen, daß Transskripte wichtig seien, gerade was die Durchsuchbarkeit angeht, Während des PPW15a wurde oftmals etwas abfällig über Laberpodcasts gesprochen, was mich immer wieder ein wenig betrübt hat, denn mein Podcast ist ein typischer Labberpodcast. Zum Glück wurde in einer Sesseion versucht, eine Lanze für Labberpodcast zu brechen. Ich höre gerne Labberpodcasts, gerade weil sie einen Einblick in das Leben der Podcasterin / des Podcasters liefert. Was haltet ihr von Labberpodcasts? Holgi und Chris Marquart. Holgi macht WRINT und Chris Marquart macht "Happy Shooting". Happy Shooting ist ein Podcast über Fotografie und Chris Marquart hat eine Session und einen Workshop angeboten, die ich mir beide angehört habe bzw. daran teilgenommen habe. Eine der Sessions, war ein typischer Foto Workshop und der andere ging der Frage nach, "Wie kann man mit Podcasts Geld verdienen". Gerade diese Frage stellt sich irgendwann, wenn man merkt, daß man gerne podcastet und gerne mehr machen würde, aber leider nicht so die Zeit hat, wie man das gerne machen würde. Leider ist es sehr schwierig, über Podcasts Geld zu verdienen. Als Resultat kam heraus, das man warhscheinlich eher indirekt Geld verdienen kann. Wie man auch einen Podcast unterstützen kann, ist über Patreon, worüber ich zwei Podcasterinnen/Podcaster unterstütze, nämlich Katrin Roenicke ( https://www.patreon.com/dieKadda ), die den "Erscheinungsraum Ost" und den "Lila Podcast" produziert und "Die Feueltöne" ( https://www.patreon.com/feuilletoene )mit Herrn Martinsen und Frau Grünkariert. Ralf Stockmann hat in einer Session den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern gezeigt, wie man ganz einfach ein Intro für seinen Podcast basteln kann. Er hat dazu Garage Band genutzt und die darin enthaltenen Loops und Instrumente. Ich habe das auch schon mal vor längerer Zeit versucht, aber ich bin nicht so musikalisch und leider hat es mir damals nicht so gut gefallen, so daß ich das dann sein gelassen habe. Ich habe in der Grundschule mal Blockflöte gelernt und ansonsten habe ich schon mal versucht Gitarre und Ukulele autodidaktisch mir beizubringen. Ich werde demnächst mal versuchen, ein Intro zu basteln, mal sehen, was ich da Zustande zu bringen werde. Nach der Aufräumsession am Sonntag, ist der Rest des Workshops noch ins WAU gegangen. Ich habe dort ein Steak gegessen. Ich war aber nicht so lange dort, da ich müde war und ins Bett wollte. Mir hat der Workshop sehr gut gefallen und zwar so gut, daß ich bebsichtige, nächstes Mal wieder hin zu gehen. Was mir nicht so gut am PPW gefallen hat, waren die Abendveranstaltungen, die mir zu lange gingen. Wenn man Abends um 23.00 Uhr die Räume verlassen muß, fand ich es schade, daß die Veranstaltungen bis 22 Uhr gingen und dadurch nur eine Stunde Zeit übrig blieb um sich mit den anderen, unterhalten zu können. Der nächste Termin für den Podlove Podcast Workshop steht noch nicht fest, aber der Termin für Podstock (http://www.podstock.de) steht schon fest und dort werde ich auch wieder hin fahren, wie schon letztes Jahr. Users can search lots of social networks from one place, drag individual elements into a single storyline, and add text to give context. This winter, McKenna Haley from Seattle University’s Project on Family Homelessness (https://www.facebook.com/SUProjectOnFamilyHomelessness) used Storify to tell the story of the Washington’s Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day. McKenna joined us to talk about her experience with the free version of the tool. At Firesteel, we experiment with a lot of new media tools as we advocate for an end to homelessness. It was a really good use cases and examples, and Steve Jobs' examples. It's really good that you could put it together and, you know, it's cool. So, but, how are you feeling, what's been going on? Tell me about your role in News Rewired. My role in here? I mean, I came to give this presentation about storytelling. Yep. And how I believe that now we are in this new age of social media, where we have over 800 million people who actually are reporters. Yeah. Social media has turned every one of us into a reporter, but not everyone is a journalist or a blogger. Yeah. So we need those people more than ever, to actually make sense of what all of those people are sharing on social media. Sure. Whether it's to verify the source, to add context, to really retell the story, to making sure whatever is happening is reported on social media. We can remember it, and we can understand what happened, and we can publish that so that the wider audience than the only few were following that personal social media, can actually understand what happened. Yeah. Exactly. So, in your opinion, social media has, is a massive influence and very important to the future of journalism. Absolutely. It's a paradigm shift. Yep. And Storify is trying to be kind of like the platform to enable to bring all those things together, right? Absolutely. We are the typewriter for this new social media age.
