At a gathering of Muslim-majority states in Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has condemned Israel's military strikes on Iran, accusing it of violating international law and risking “total disaster” in the region. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, also at the summit, warned that any US involvement in the conflict would be “very dangerous.” Also in the programme: In the UK, the launch of a new scheme to map the DNA of newborn babies; and 50 years after the hit film Jaws was released, we ask if it's finally time for a PR makeover for sharks.Photo: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan speaks in Istanbul Credit: REUTERS/Umit Bektas
Over the past decades we've heard a lot about the potential impacts of climate change, from rising temperatures to wildfires and droughts. Greece is on the frontline of many of these shifts. Today we're taking a closer look at how climate change will impact Greece's economy. Nikos Vettas, the General Director of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research and a Professor of Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, joins Thanos Davelis as we break down the challenges and opportunities for Greece's economy. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Climate change to cost up to 327,000 jobsCompetitiveness deficit shows no sign of easingGreek PM opens door to a shift on nuclear powerArmenia's Pashinyan, Turkey's Erdogan to hold 'historic' talks amid Iran-Israel war
In EVN Report's news roundup for the week of June 20: Israel-Iran conflict starting to have ripple effects in Armenia; Russian-Armenian billionaire is in pretrial detention on charges of inciting the seizure of power; PM Nikol Pashinyan is in Turkey at Erdogan's invitation and more.
"Israel openly threatens to eliminate Iran's Khamenei " "Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has threatened to eliminate Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Calling the Iranian leader “the modern Hitler,” the Israeli minister said: ""A dictator like Khamenei, who leads Iran and has made the destruction of Israel his banner, cannot continue to exist.” The threat comes hours after some 20-30 Iranian missiles targeted Israel's central cities, including Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Holon, as well as Soroka Hospital in the southern city of Beersheba." "Trump to decide if US joins assault on Iran ‘within two weeks' " "US President Donald Trump has said he will decide whether to attack Iran within the next two weeks due to a ""substantial"" chance of negotiations, as Tel Aviv and Tehran traded fire for a seventh day. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said hat Trump was interested in pursuing a diplomatic solution with Iran, but his top priority was ensuring that Iran could not obtain a nuclear weapon. She said any deal would have to prohibit enrichment of uranium by Tehran and eliminate Iran's ability to achieve a nuclear weapon, adding that ""correspondence has continued"" between the United States and Iran." "UN adds Israel to blacklist of worst violators of children's rights " "The UN once again included the Israeli troops among ""parties that commit grave violations affecting children in situations of armed conflict,"" according to a report. The report said: ""In 2024, violence against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels, with a staggering 25 percent surge in the number of grave violations in comparison with 2023."" It added that the UN verified 41,370 grave violations against children, with 36,221 committed in 2024 — a nearly 50% rise in deadly incidents compared to the previous year." "Kiev worries Iran-Israel tensions may divert US attention " "Fighting between Iran and Israel could deflect global attention from the Russian incursion into Ukraine and even bolster Kremlin's war effort, Ukrainian officials have said. ""For Ukraine, the challenge is the price of oil, because if prices remain high for a long time, the Russians will earn more,"" a senior Ukrainian political source said. Kiev is concerned that waning attention and support from Washington could lead to a muted US response to further Russian advances or deadly aerial attacks. Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy said that the war between Iran and Israel carried risks for Kiev, adding that they would like to see the aid to Ukraine would not be reduced because of Israel-Iran conflict. " "Türkiye will never forget Azerbaijan's solidarity after earthquakes: Erdogan " "Türkiye will never forget the solidarity of the Azerbaijani people after the earthquakes that hit southern Türkiye in February 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. Speaking at the key delivery ceremony of post-quake houses in Türkiye's Kahramanmaras province alongside his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, he said that Azerbaijan was one of the first countries that came to his country's aid after the quakes. He recalled Türkiye's support for Azerbaijan on the issue of Karabakh from the first days of the 44-day conflict with Armenia in fall 2020, expressing Turkish solidarity “gave us additional strength.”"

Since arriving in Ankara, US ambassador Tom Barrack has been thrown into the spotlight. Aside from his active role in Syria, reports indicate he is laying the groundwork for an Erdogan visit to Washington. If we take a closer look, however, the argument could also be made that he is seemingly promoting a number of Turkish positions across the board - from selling Turkey F-35s to presenting Turkey as an indispensable actor for regional stability. Now Israel's strike on Iran could throw many of these calculations up in the air. The FDD's Sinan Ciddi and Tyler Stapleton join Thanos Davelis to break all of this down.Sinan Ciddi is a non-resident senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and an expert on Turkish politics.Tyler Stapleton serves as director of congressional relations at FDD Action. He previously spent eight years working in Congress where he served as a senior advisor on national security, foreign policy, defense, and intelligence for two members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Israel and Iran Trade Attacks on 4th Day of ConflictPlans afoot for an Erdogan trip to the White HouseIran denies asking Cyprus to convey messages to IsraelCyprus on high alert as regional tensions escalateModi begins two-day visit to Cyprus, set to sign joint declaration on strategic cooperation
At least 4 killed, 103 injured in Israel after Iran launches new wave of missiles "At least four people were killed and 103 injured in the latest Iranian missile strikes targeting Israel, Israeli media reported. Two of the injured are in serious condition, while seven others are in moderate condition. All casualties have been hospitalised." Israel continues to kill Palestinians across besieged Gaza "Israel has killed at least 16 more Palestinians across Gaza as its brutal war on the besieged enclave continues. The strikes targeted Gaza City, Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza, and Khan Younis as Israel's war on the enclave continues." Trump blocks Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's Supreme Leader, US officials say "A senior US official told AFP that President Donald Trump blocked an Israeli plan to assassinate Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The official, speaking anonymously, said Washington warned Israel against the move. Israeli PM Netanyahu declined to confirm the report but stated, “We'll do what we need to do.”" Turkish President Erdogan welcomes Trump's remarks on ending Israel-Iran conflict "Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed Donald Trump's recent call for peace between Israel and Iran, warning of a regional catastrophe if tensions escalate. The two leaders spoke by phone, discussing bilateral ties and regional issues, according to Türkiye's Communications Directorate. Trump earlier wrote on Truth Social that “Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal.” UK names first female head of MI6, rewriting rules of spy game The UK has appointed the first woman to lead its Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), the Prime Minister's office announced. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageThe drumbeat of conflict reverberating through the Middle East has drawn global attention, but behind the headlines lies a methodical strategy that deserves deeper understanding. Following the catastrophic events of October 7th, 2023—Israel's own 9/11—we've witnessed the systematic dismantling of Iran's proxy network throughout the region. This episode examines Israel's calculated response to Hamas and other Iran-backed groups, tracing how Israeli forces have degraded Hamas's military capabilities, decimated Hezbollah's leadership, curtailed Iraqi and Syrian militias, and contained Houthi threats from Yemen. We explore how this campaign has now reached Iran itself, with Israel targeting military infrastructure to prevent nuclear capabilities while facing reprisals against civilian areas. The contrast between these approaches speaks volumes about the conflict's moral dimensions. What does it mean that only two theocracies in the world—Iran and Yemen—are actively exporting religious violence? How might Israel's campaign against Iran's military effectiveness create conditions for expanded peace in the region? As we witness history unfold, understanding these dynamics helps us grasp not just the headlines, but the profound shifts reshaping the Middle East's future. our book of the day is "Sledgehammer" by David FriedmannKey Points from the Episode:• The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia unexpectedly endorsed President Trump's Middle East peace plan, alongside many other nations• Turkey was historically cooperative with Israel until President Erdogan's leadership beginning in 2003• Iran has been exporting hate and violence in the region for nearly 50 years through proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas• Since October 7th, 2023, Israel has systematically degraded Hamas, weakened Hezbollah, and curtailed Iraqi and Syrian militias• Israel is now directly confronting Iran's military capabilities, particularly its nuclear program• Of all world theocracies, only Iran and Yemen are actively exporting violence through physical means• The 2020 Abraham Accords created unprecedented peace agreements between Israel and UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco• These agreements achieved peace without requiring Israel to make territorial concessionsOther resources: Israel's Sept 11thLM#38--Israel's 9-11, part 1LM#39--Israel's 9-11, part 2--Don't look awayLM#54--Black Saturday, October 7th -- One Year LaterWant to leave a review?

During the early morning hours of June 13, 2025, Israel conducted a preemptive strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, ballistic missile installations, and Iran's military and nuclear science leadership. Israel initiated this action based on intelligence it had acquired which revealed Iran is very close to closing the loop for obtaining a nuclear weapon. This compares to a 5.4% average increase for resident doctors, formally known as junior doctors, and 4% for consultants and other senior doctors. The Scottish government has already agreed a two-year 8% pay offer with health unions. Around 345,000 members of the Royal College of Nursing union will be asked if the pay award is enough in what has been described as the biggest single vote of the profession ever launched in the UK. Nuala speaks to Steve Ford, editor of the Nursing Times.Turkey has imposed a restriction on elective caesarean sections at small private medical clinics, without a medical justification, under new health ministry regulations. President Erdogan has declared 2025 to be the ‘Year of the family' and has been campaigning for women to have vagina births, or 'natural births' as he's calling them, in a bid to encourage women to have more babies. Turkey has one of the highest rates of caesarean section births according to health ministry figures from 2023, where out of all births 61.5% were by c-section. This compares to the UK's 42%, according to the latest NHS data. Nuala talks to Guardian journalist Ruth Michaelson and Dr Irmak Sarac, a gynaecologist and feminist activist in Turkey, to discuss why these restrictions have been brought in and what's happening to women's reproductive health in Turkey.Daughters of the Bamboo Grove: China's Stolen Children and a Story of Separated Twins is the real life story of twin girls born in China who were separated as toddlers in 2002. One girl was adopted in good faith by an American couple who believed that the baby's Chinese birth-parents had given her up. The other remained in China to be raised by her birth parents. The story shone a light on China's one child policy which ran from 1979 to 2015 and China's involvement in international adoption, a practice that was ended last year. Nuala speaks to the American journalist Barbara Demick, who unravelled the truth of what happened to the twins, eventually broke the story to the world and who has put their story into this book. At the 9th Our Ocean Conference in Athens last year, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that Greece would create two marine parks that would raise the extent of Greece's marine protected areas to 30 percent. Last year's announcement also led to objections from Turkey, adding a geopolitical angle to this discussion. Now, reports indicate Greece is about to pass legislation to make this a reality. John Psaropoulos joins Thanos Davelis as we break down what this could mean for Greece's delicate marine areas, while looking at how Turkey's objections are complicating this story. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Greece poised to make marine parks a realityPlans afoot for an Erdogan trip to the White House“The right time is coming and it will come soon,” vows Greek Foreign Minister regarding Crete-Cyprus power link

“You can essentially divide the region between two sets of players. You have the, broadly speaking, Western-aligned players, which essentially consist of Israel and the non-Islamist Arab countries—countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE—and then, on the other hand, you have the axis of Islamism—of support for Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood and jihadism. And that, these days, is mostly the Iranian regime of course, Turkey unfortunately under Tayyip Erdogan, and Qatar, Qatar being the lead financier of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood,” says Josh Hammer, host of the Newsweek podcast “The Josh Hammer Show” and author of “Israel and Civilization: The Fate of the Jewish Nation and the Destiny of the West.”“Iran is the source of evil in the Middle East. We should be very clear about that,” he says. “This is the world's No. 1 state sponsor of terrorism. They have been ever since the hostage crisis that formed this horrific regime that ended the Jimmy Carter presidency in 1979.”What does an America First foreign policy look like? How does Trump's Middle East strategy fit into it? And what about the U.S. relationship with Qatar?“America has always been engaged on the world stage. So the fact that we're not necessarily going to be going around crusading in the name of spreading liberal democracy does not necessarily mean that we have no interest in the world. We're America first, but you have to be America smart as well,” says Hammer.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and guest and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

TURKEY: NO EU OBSTACLE TO ERDOGAN 1870 ISTANBUL
Last week a $7 billion energy deal involving the United States, Turkey and Qatar, was signed in Damascus, a move designed to revive Syria's crippled power sector. The move raises questions about Qatar and Turkey's role in post-Assad Syria and about the Trump administration's Syria policy. Groong Week in Review - June 1, 2025In this episode of Groong's Week in Review, recorded on June 2, 2025, guest Benyamin Poghosyan joins hosts Hovik Manucharyan and Asbed Bedrossian to unpack a tense and volatile week in both regional and domestic politics. The conversation opens with rising tensions in the Ukraine war, as drone strikes reach deep into Russia, Germany lifts missile restrictions, and Trump labels Putin “crazy,” all while Iran nuclear talks remain frozen under hardline U.S. demands. The focus then shifts to the South Caucasus, where Turkish FM Hakan Fidan met Lavrov in Moscow to push the “3+3” platform and floated Istanbul as a summit venue for global powers. Meanwhile, Erdogan, Aliyev, and Pakistan's PM Sharif staged a PR spectacle in Lachin to inaugurate a third airport in occupied Artsakh, signaling strategic realignments. Back in Armenia, the Pashinyans launched harsh verbal attacks on the Armenian Church just as Baku's Grand Mufti claimed Etchmiadzin as Azerbaijani land, prompting questions of tacit coordination. The episode also revisits the impeachment debate versus opposition planning for the 2026 elections, probing whether security and corruption can drive real political traction. Finally, the hosts spotlight the rise of regime-aligned oligarch Narek Nalbandyan, whose sweetheart deals, state-enabled asset grabs, and government-backed expansion raise serious concerns about the erosion of anti-corruption values in Armenia today.TopicsStatus of Ukraine and US-Iran CrisesHakan Fidan in MoscowErdogan, Aliyev, Sharif in LachinAzerbaijan and Pashinyan Attack the Armenian ChurchImpeachment vs. ElectionsThe Kitchen SinkGuest: Benyamin PoghosyanHostsHovik ManucharyanAsbed BedrossianEpisode 442 | Recorded: June 2, 2025SHOW NOTES: https://podcasts.groong.org/442VIDEO: https://youtu.be/oo_B7xhOVlMSubscribe and follow us everywhere you are: linktr.ee/groong

A v čem by u operace Pavučina měli zpozornět i Evropané?
Turkish authorities are intensifying their crackdown on Istanbul's imprisoned mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu. The move comes as İmamoğlu, despite his incarceration, remains President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's principal political rival, with protests continuing over his arrest. On Wednesday, a suburb of Istanbul witnessed the latest demonstration in support of the city's detained mayor. Despite the protest taking place in a traditional electoral stronghold of President Erdoğan, tens of thousands attended.İmamoğlu masksIn a recent attempt to quell the unrest, Istanbul's governor's office issued a decree ordering the removal of all images, videos, and audio recordings of İmamoğlu from state buildings and public transport across the city. Within hours, social media was flooded with footage of people wearing İmamoğlu masks while riding public transport.Turkey's youth rise up over mayor's jailing and worsening economy“Up to 75% are against İmamoğlu's arrest, as the aversion to Erdoğan's attempt to sideline his opponent with foul play was widely distributed by all parties,” claimed political analyst Atilla Yeşilada of Global Source Partners, citing recent opinion polls.Yeşilada argues that the poll's findings underscore the opposition's success in winning over public opinion.“There is a strong reaction. This is not a temporary thing. It's a grievance that will be held and may impact the next election whenever they are held,” he added.Recent opinion polls also show İmamoğlu enjoying a double-digit lead over Erdoğan in a prospective presidential race, with a majority of respondents believing the corruption charges against the mayor are politically motivated—a claim the government denies.Erdogan's jailed rivalsPolitical analyst Sezin Öney of the independent Turkish news portal Politikyol suggests Erdoğan may have expected İmamoğlu to follow the same fate as other jailed rivals, whose influence faded once imprisoned. “The government is counting on the possibility that İmamoğlu is jailed, is out of sight, out of mind, and the presidency will have his ways,” explained Öney.Further arrests as Turkey cracks down on protests over jailed Istanbul mayorTurkish authorities have persistently sought to curtail İmamoğlu's presence on social media. His accounts on X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky have been frozen following court rulings. The fate of opposition journalistsSimilar actions have been taken against opposition journalists and their supporters. “The operation goes deeper and deeper in recent months; it's just a very concerted policy to create a blackout in this vibrant society,” claimed Erol Önderoğlu, Istanbul representative of the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders. The legal crackdown on the Istanbul municipality continues, with further waves of arrests extending even to İmamoğlu's personal bodyguard. His party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), is also under investigation for alleged irregularities at its party congress.Analyst Öney predicts that further crackdowns are likely, given the potential implications for Erdoğan's political future. “I am sure this is being calculated and recalculated every day—whether it's beneficial to throw more cases at him (İmamoğlu), by weakening his party, the Republican People's Party, weakening him personally, or whatever is convenient. But the sky is the limit,” explained Öney.Nevertheless, each new crackdown appears only to fuel the momentum behind opposition protests, which continue to attract large crowds across the country—including in Erdoğan's own political bastions.Protest movementThe leader of the main opposition CHP, Özgür Özel, has earned praise for his energetic performances and has won over many former sceptics. However, analyst Yeşilada questions whether Özel can sustain the protest movement.“I feel in the summer months, it's very difficult to keep the momentum; the colleges are closed, and people are shuffling through the country, so if that (protests) is the only means of piling the pressure on Erdoğan, it's not going to work,” warned Yeşilada.Istanbul's mayorial elections mean more than just running the city Yeşilada believes the opposition leader must elevate his strategy. “Özel needs to find new tricks. It will take two things: A) hearing what the grassroots are saying, in particular the younger generation, and B) being able to reshuffle the party rank and file so true activists are promoted—so they can energise the base,” he added. In 2013, Erdoğan weathered a wave of mass protests which largely dissipated with the closing of universities and the arrival of the summer holidays. This year, he may again be relying on summer to quieten dissent. For the opposition, the challenge is to ensure that Erdoğan's summer is anything but peaceful.

Türkiye celebrates Istanbul's conquest by launching gas platform "Türkiye sent off its first floating production unit Osman Gazi, towards the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan led the ceremonial send-off in Istanbul, accompanied by top officials and a traditional mehter band. Marking the 572nd anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul, the platform's journey through the strait began with presidential blessings and radio communications. Expected to double gas output, Osman Gazi is seen as Türkiye's bold stride towards energy independence." US flag returns to Syria after 12 years of frozen ties "In a landmark move, US envoy Thomas Barrack raised the American flag over the ambassador's residence in Damascus. It was its first appearance since 2012. Though embassy operations remain suspended, Barrack's visit signals renewed US-Syria engagement. Appointed on May 23, Barrack met with Syria's President Ahmed al Sharaa and reopened the residence with Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani. He reiterated US support for current leadership, hinted at peace talks with Israel and confirmed that sanctions had been lifted by President Trump, including Syria's removal from the ""terror sponsor"" list." Ukraine open to Istanbul talks but wants Russia's peace terms first "Jumping on to another volatile region, Ukraine has expressed its readiness to participate in peace talks planned to take place in Istanbul next week. However, Kiev insists that Russia must share its proposed peace terms in advance. Ukraine described Moscow's refusal to do so as “non-constructive,” warning that the meeting risks being ineffective without transparency. Meanwhile, the United Nations has reported a sharp increase in civilian casualties, with over 13,000 civilians killed since the conflict began. The United States has called on Russia to agree to a comprehensive ceasefire, emphasising that there is no military solution to the conflict. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also urged all parties to keep dialogue channels open despite stalled diplomatic efforts." South Koreans show record turnout as early voting continues "South Koreans turned out in record numbers on Friday for the second day of early voting, aiming to end months of political chaos sparked by ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol's controversial martial law declaration and impeachment. With the economy under strain and a revolving door of interim leaders, liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung leads the race, followed by conservative Kim Moon-soo. Already, a record 21 percent of 44.4 million registered voters have cast ballots, with overseas turnout hitting historic highs ahead of the June 3 election." "Hamas: Israeli ceasefire response fails to meet core demands "Palestinian resistance group Hamas says Israel's response to a US-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal falls short of its demands. The plan, put forward by US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff, remains under Hamas review. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes bombed southern Lebanon, striking several towns days after a deadly attack breached the 2024 truce. Separately in Gaza, the head of the United Nations relief agency for Palestinian refugees Philippe Lazzarini, warned that Israel's war tactics, including starvation, threaten future generations in Gaza. He urged unhindered access to aid to avert a deepening humanitarian catastrophe."
This week Turkey's President Erdogan said he was putting together a team to draft a new constitution, a move that comes in the wake of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu's arrest. Many critics see this push for a new constitution as a power play designed to allow Erdogan to remain in power beyond 2028, when his current term ends. Sinan Ciddi, a non-resident senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and an expert on Turkish politics, joins Thanos Davelis to look into what's at stake for Turkish democracy and why it matters for the US and Europe. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:A Turkey With No Elections?Turkey's Erdogan appoints legal team to draft new constitution, sparking fears of extended ruleIndia turns its gaze to Cyprus as gateway to Europe and the Middle EastGov't drafts tougher law for rejected asylum seekers, Mitsotakis says
The United States and Iran have drawn clear lines in the sand regarding Iran's nuclear program. The U.S. demands that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon. Iran insists it does not want to have a nuclear weapon. The U.S. demands that Iran must stop enriching uranium at near weapon's grade levels and dismantle their nuclear sites. Iran insists that it will never give up its right to enrich uranium. Is it possible for the two sides to reach an agreement? And what's behind Iran's demand to enrich uranium at such high levels if highly enriched uranium is not necessary for domestic energy use? During this episode of the Blessors of Israel Podcast, Pastor Rich Jones joins Dr. Matthew Dodd in studio to discuss what is behind Iran's demand to enrich uranium. They also discuss the historical and biblical significance of Jerusalem Day along with recent developments in Israel's war against Hamas. China is planning a new version of its Made In China 2025 industrial strategy. Just as America is punching holes in its own science funding budget, we'll be reporting from the output gap. Meanwhile, the new US ambassador to Ankara has declared that he's against carving up Syria in a modern Sykes-Picot, the treaty that drew up the Middle East modern borders. Is this an important anti-colonial action or just a license for Erdogan to gobble up his own Ottoman empire? Finally, Harvard continues to come under shelling by the US government. Not content with disbarring international students, Trump said on Monday that he is considering taking $3 billion of previously awarded grant money and giving it to trade schools. Reports indicate that President Trump and members of his administration are looking for ways to circumvent or lift CAATSA sanctions and put arms sales, particularly of F-35 jets, back on the table with Turkey. A decision earlier this year by authorities in the occupied northern part of Cyprus to allow headscarves in schools has led to mass protests against what many see as President Erdogan's increasing authoritarianism and a creeping Islamification from Ankara.
