Not seeing salary info in job ads seems to be a hot button issue that all job seekers can get behind. (Except when it comes to having their current companies add it to their own job ads but I digress…) It's common in the UK.. The state of Colorado just mandated it. But for most job ads in the US, salary ranges are nowhere to be found. But…why? If it gets more job seekers interested, what's the hesitancy? Jeff Smith and James Hornick will uncover why it never seems to happen in the next 10 Minute Talent Rant, Episode 24, “Why Isn't Everyone Putting Salary Info In Job Ads?” Connect with James Hornick and Jeff Smith James Hornick's LinkedIn page Jeff Smith's LinkedIn page

As Kauffman and Moazed touch on various details of the SEC complaint, they also discuss censorship on content platforms, launching and running a disruptive startup business, and the ongoing battle against the overreaching policies of big tech. Jeremy created LBRY because he fell in love with the idea of shared, global content registry that is owned and controlled by no one. Unsurprisingly, he is a longtime supporter of decentralized technology and freedom of information. SHR # 2523 :: Cardiovascular Effects and Benefits of BFR PLUS Critical Thinking 101: Co2 Levels Are at Record Lows.. Why Isn't Anyone Talking About It? - Dr. James Stray-Gunderson, MD - The role of blood-flow restriction training has been well illustrated in improving the anabolic response to exercise in numerous studies. But what about the effect on the heart and cardiovascular system at large? Blood-flow restriction creates a partitioning of blood in the limbs the BFR bands are applied to. Does this make it a good choice for people with existing heart conditions? What about the hemodynamics effects? Could BFR aid in various types of peripheral blood flow diseases? The and many more questions will be answered. PLUS Critical Thinking 101: Co2 is at an all-time global low. Lower than any Green New Deal ever promised to make them. Yet we have some of the craziest weather of all times. What's up with that? Why isn't the MSM asking questions?

With much of the country under stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19, what do these orders mean for the five freedoms of the First Amendment? On today’s episode of So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast, host Nico Perrino and constitutional law expert Josh Blackman will break it all down. Blackman is a professor of law at the South Texas College of Law in Houston and the author of three books, including his recently co-authored book with Professor Randy E. Why? Isn’t one altar call enough? If an altar call is what you really want. Nicodemus didn’t want an altar call. He wanted to "see the kingdom of God.” Jesus knew this through divine discernment and could cut to the chase. “Except you be born again.” But Nicodemus suffers from “Viejitis,” a debilitating disorder that can strike at any age. Pastor Joe explains this condition that resists the mysterious and miraculous ways of God.
Topic 1: Cloud Neutrality You've heard of Net Neutrality. This is pretty much the same thing, with the premise that access to the cloud suffers the same potential problems. Dave's favorite quote: “It would be as though Ford, GM, and Toyota had built the Interstate Highway System using private dollars and then charged tolls to other car makers to use it.” Ryan wonders whether the cloud has become a utility. And Karl's not sure there's actually a problem here. Related link: https://www.wired.com/story/we-need-to-talk-about-cloud-neutrality/ Topic 2: The List of Evil Tech Companies A while back we looked at the most trusted brands. (Remember? The postal service came out on top.) This time we're looking at companies accused of "evil" actions, large and small. Our two biggest observations are: 1) We could come up with more (better) examples than some of these; and 2) Some of these are just businesses pursuing their own interest. Where do you cross the line into evil? And do you need to have evil intent to be evil, or can it be an unintended consequence? Related link: https://slate.com/technology/2020/01/evil-list-tech-companies-dangerous-amazon-facebook-google-palantir.html Topic 3: Why Isn't the Adoption of New Technology Faster? Background: Seth Robinson’s guest spot on Business of Tech: Why new technologies are not being adopted more rapidly. Related questions include how much of the push-back is from entrenched incumbents vs. technicians who are simply not trained on the new technologies. The never-ending lesson is to keep grabbing onto the future. That's where all the opportunity is. With so much emphasis on employee engagement programs, there is very little emphasis on the root cause of employee dis-engagement. Despite the overwhelming research on the negative effects of employee dis-engagement, very little is actually being done to move the needle. It’s challenging to live the values we preach inside our organizations. Just knowing them and believing in them is not enough. As individuals, we’re not good at examining our own behaviors and how they are disconnected from the values we promote (e.g. respect, teamwork, appreciation for the whole self, etc) People get on board conceptually, but until there is a leader who is willing to do the work on themselves, and provide the resources for others to do that deep behavior-change work, the values won’t come to life. Beware of hiring a C-suite level role to ‘deal with’ the culture problems. These challenges below to the entire C-suite and shouldn’t be designated to one person. Ask people for feedback - directly or anonymously - on your behaviors to help build self awareness. Do an inventory of your life over the past 1-5 years of all the things that have gone wrong and all the worst interactions you’ve had at work. Look at each of them as if it was a movie: look for how your actions or choices contributed to the issue or interaction. What themes emerge? Hire an external person that you are paying for in a formal relationship to be your source of truth and wisdom because we can never fully see ourselves honestly. That formality forces you to take it seriously, show up, and know they’re doing their job to the best of their ability. When you do this for yourself, it will trickle down to the people on your team, but likely won’t trickle upward. To manage up, it often takes an external consultant to work with leadership. Too often, we avoid speaking hard truths to those above us in order to protect ourselves, but change cant happen if we’re all functioning from a place of fear. Why Isn’t God Answering My Prayer?Have you ever felt disillusioned because of the troubles of life, and wondered: Where is God? “Trouble” can be a catalyst, the thing that prompts us to remember our privilege to call out to Jesus in prayer! Psalm 50:15 Cry out to God in times of trouble and THEN God will deliver you, and you shall glorify Him. www.prairiebible.org

"Gem" wrote me after a recent episode of my podcast. In that episode, a therapist said, after one single session (where divorce had not been mentioned) that the client needed to prepare for divorce. In Gem's case, her husband used therapy as the excuse that they "had tried therapy but it didn't work." But he went further, saying that if Gem did not go along with his desire to divorce, it amounted to her disregarding (and disrespecting) his emotions. I would have said, "WHAT??", except I have heard the same thing over and over. Often enough that I have even wondered if some Pro-Divorce "expert" had given that as the secret recipe to shift a spouse out of "save the marriage mode." (Yes, those folks do exist... and yes, spouses do find them... and use them to arm against staying married -- as if you need to arm against that!!) What does it mean when a spouse says, "You are disrespecting my feelings by trying to save our marriage"? And what do you do? IS it disrespectful? SHOULD you just go along and give up? I cover it in this week's Save The Marriage Podcast. Listen below. RELATED RESOURCES Can Your Marriage Be Saved? Why Isn't Your Marriage Turning Around? Am I Against Therapy? Rayan Rafay was prepared to be blown away by Bay Area seafood when he moved here in 2016. After growing up on the East Coast, he had been amazed by the seafood he encountered when he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. “It’s just this like magical wonderland of seafood,” he said. “Chefs just did things with seafood on the West Coast that I’d never even imagined in my lemon butter world of fish.” But when he got here, he was surprised not to see the local catch on many restaurant menus. So he asked Bay Curious: With the Pacific Ocean right there, why isn’t local seafood a bigger deal in the Bay Area? This week on Bay Curious, we explore the economics of seafood and the cultural changes need for it to get a star place on our dinner plates. In this episode I spoke to Sean Holman, half of the Lightning and Holman duo that hosts the hit podcast "The Truck Show" for Motortrend. Mike Finnegan introduced us and the two shows have collaborated on a few things over the last year. Sean has always been fascinated with automotive topics and trucks but his start is not the typical story. Early on, Sean obtained a degree in criminal justice and wanted to be an officer. Unfortunately he did not like the bureaucracy and started looking for alternatives to his chosen career. On Sept 11, 2001 he was working in a Boeing factory working security supporting the Shuttle missions and had to make sure the plant was shut down and secure right after the attacks. Employees were watching the skies and listening to silence, unsure of what would happen next. Sean made the jump out of security right after that, by making contacts at Primedia and working his way into being the associate editor of Truckin' magazine. On the first day of Black History Month, Dom asks us to examine what it's like to be Black in America. Terri and Dom dive into a discussion about colorism, good hair vs. bad hair, representation, how we talk, and lots of other factors that could tear down one’s self-esteem depending on how we perceive it. Dr. Dom drops some knowledge about the Clark doll study, the original experiment that illustrates how we've been conditioned to view ourselves as bad. Terri shouts out her husband’s books that showcase Black boys in a positive light. www.becomeproof.com www.30in30.org - a free tool we have created for people to help take ownership of their health. AutoImmunity http://learntruehealth.com/autoimmunity Many people suffer from autoimmunity. But because sometimes the symptoms can be confusing, people fail to seek immediate treatment for autoimmunity. My guest today, Dr. Jared Seigler has an amazing story on how his journey led him to help people address autoimmunity conditions. Stumbled By Accident Dr. Jared Seigler relates that he stumbled into functional medicine by accident. It started when his wife was struggling to conceive for years because she was suffering from PCOS. After almost five years of searching for answers, they were even contemplating on adopting a child. But Dr. Jared Seigler refused to give up mainly since his wife was just 23 years old at the time. He was even subjected to a stool test wherein they found parasites so Dr. Jared Seigler also underwent treatment. After years of searching for answers and countless treatments, the couple was finally blessed with a daughter who is now five years old. Helminth Parasites Helminths are parasitic worms, and parasites are known manipulators of the immune system. The first time Dr. Jared Seigler got exposed to it was six years ago when one of his lupus patients called him. That patient claimed to feel better because of her dog’s licks. She was not taking any drugs nor any supplements. “What good parasites can do, is act like a probiotic for the parasite. As they manipulate the immune system to hide from it, so the immune system doesn’t attack it, they also suppress the immune system that is causing autoimmunity,” Dr. Jared Seigler said. He adds, “I’m not anti-parasite. When I look autoimmunity and probiotics research, it’s a hit or miss. There is even research showing that for example, Crohn’s is due to the immune system in some cases, losing tolerance to normal bacteria.” But Dr. Jared Seigler clarifies that when we see someone being given a beneficial parasite consistently, that can take away a lot of autoimmune symptoms. He says dead bacteria behaves utterly different than a live bacteria. Some of the most potent stimulators of inflammation in the gut are dead bacteria that they use in the modern dairy industry. The Truth About Milk Dr. Jared Seigler believes the gut has to quit getting colostrum from mother’s milk. Hence, a mom has to stop breastfeeding for the gut to grow. “The premise that we need milk for health has been purely built on BS. The research goes the other way,” explains Dr. Jared Seigler. “Technically, when you look at it on a big enough scale, 100% of the world is lactose-intolerant. It takes five gallons of milk a day or a sip to be able to reset intolerance of sugars in the milk.” Understanding Autoimmunity Dr. Jared Seigler readily shares that he has autoimmunity as well as his wife. So, he clearly knows he can’t go back to eating the way he used to eat. Dr. Jared Seigler is also aware that he is not perfect just because he has changed his lifestyle to a healthier one. But he loves being a work in progress. That is why his passion lies in also helping people get their bodies to a place where they can heal. “With the whole premises of autoimmunity, there’s the genetic susceptibility component. I truly don’t believe the immune system makes a mistake with autoimmunity,” said Dr. Jared Seigler. “I believe the immune system is being tricked and overwhelmed in that scenario.” He adds, “Once the immune system recognizes it as a problem, we have to think about what is driving certain things for autoimmunity like molecular mimicry. For molecular mimicry, the immune system initially recognizes something bad like identifying characteristics. Once it progresses, it can start epitope spreading.” Human Microbiome Project The Human Microbiome Project tries to figure out all the bacteria in our gut, and skin, as well as figuring out what all these bacteria do and how they influence our genes. Dr. Jared Seigler says bacteria pitifully outnumber us. “One of the things that the Microbiome Project started to make clearer is that it is really about the diversity of bacteria more than anything,” said Dr. Jared Seigler. Apparently, there about ten times more viruses inside the gut than there are bacteria. So, there’s a whole concept called the microbiome. Plus, there’s a microbiome where we can vividly see worms. “Someone’s microbiome is like a thumbprint. I think a lot of these companies are data-mining people’s microbiomes,” Dr. Jared Seigler said. “They are giving away these costly tests for relatively nothing. For the 23andMe, they were selling people’s genetic data to pharma companies.” Cold Showers Dr. Jared Seigler reveals that he is also a big fan of cold showers. What it does as far as glutathione production, neurotransmitter production, and microbiome change, it that we weren’t designed to be 72 degrees year-round. Just like we weren’t intended to eat the same food. He says taking cold showers changes how mitochondria functions. It also changes antioxidants, changes how our body utilizes and breaks down a lot of things as well as making people warm. Eating Real Food Dr. Jared Seigler says as far as figuring out the cause of autoimmunity; he never blames food as long as it is real food. He believes that in the long run, probably one of the worse things someone can do is restrict a lot of their food diversity. Dr. Jared Seigler also believes that doing a three-day fast can be beneficial. And as far as recommending the best prebiotics, he advises thinking of prebiotics as fiber. Think of fiber like fruits and vegetables. Eat different fruits and vegetables if you want different prebiotics. On the other hand, I have had Chinese medicine practitioner Sarica Cernohous on the show who attested to the benefits of eating fermented foods. Shifting her family to eat at least one fermented food a day eventually strengthened their gut. “I would rather somebody eat fermented foods than try to take it in a capsule. Because traditionally, that’s how we would get probiotics from the fermentation process,” said Dr. Jared Seigler. “It might not necessarily beat all the bacteria that’s in there, but as the bacteria is eating that food, their poop is what we’re after. They change genetic expression.” Gluten Sensitivity According to Dr. Jared Seigler, gluten sensitivity is the genetic predisposition. That is why we see such a huge correlation between autoimmunity and gluten sensitivity. Dr. Jared Seigler also mentions that he took Dr. Tom O’ Bryan and Dr. Peter Osbone’s gluten certification course. He took the classes after deciding to go gluten-free when his wife was diagnosed with celiac. “My energy and depression got better, and my anxiety and brain fog disappeared. I see people on so many different spectrums. Some people don’t even know what gluten is,” said Dr. Jared Seigler. Dr. Jared Seigler says there are even case studies of ALS being gluten sensitive with a 100% resolution upon going on a gluten-free diet. So, it eliminates the inflammation. We dramatically see that when we start to remove problematic foods. Functional Neurology Dr. Jared Seigler explains that from 0 to 6 years old, brain waves of a child is similar to how we dream or store long-term memories. It is similar to dreaming while they are awake. As soon as it happens inside of a child’s brain, their subconscious now operates on an entirely different level. And this is where you can measure some things like heart rate variability. “I love doing a thing called Functional Neurology. Most people know about functional medicine, but functional neurology is like a personal trainer for your brain. You can exercise different parts of the brain to increase its function,” said Dr. Jared Seigler. The Power Of Thoughts Dr. Jared Seigler explains that we always think food may be poisoning our autoimmune disease. So, if you’re only eating 4 to 5 times a day, you have the potential to poison yourself 4 to 5 times a day. But we have anywhere around 30,000 thoughts a day and only 1% may be bad. That’s still hundreds of times a day we poison ourselves with a thought. Technically, a toxin can be a thought or a relationship. “So, if we know that these bad thoughts have negative effects, you can feel your blood pressure rising,” Dr. Jared Seigler explains. “That’s your stress response shifting into high gear. You change your physiology with thoughts. Generosity and gratitude are the two strongest positive emotions.” A positive mindset is powerful. Dr. Jared Seigler usually advises people suffering from addiction to write on a journal and focus on what they are grateful for. “You can get over addiction by diluting it until it is socially acceptable. With an addiction to food, in particular, we can tell when somebody is ready to make a change to the question they are asking. Ultimately, the brain wants to feel normal,” said Dr. Jared Seigler. “The body has never made a mistake. It is just doing what it can in the environment that it’s in. Bio Dr. Jared Seigler, Doctor of Chiropractic and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, practices in West Chester, Ohio. His passion is to help his patients regain their health through Functional and Lifestyle Medicine. This personal quest was sparked by watching the health of his loved ones degrade over time while conventional medicine provided no real answers. Initially starting as a personal trainer, Dr. Jared Seigler had an insatiable appetite for knowledge on how to better the health of his clients. This hunger for knowledge is his guiding light and has grown into what we offer at the Living Proof Institute. By helping patients identify the cause of their disease and giving them the tools to regain their health, Dr. Jared Seigler cannot only compliment his patient’s current healthcare but fill the gaps left by conventional medicine. This is the conclusion of my series on Why Isn't My Audience Growing? Today it's all about what to do when you feel stuck. We'll get a little more woo woo into the mindset, inspiration, and encouragement. To see all the posts, you can can check this page: How to Grow Your Audience and Platform. When you are trying to grow your audience, you are going to hit bumps and plateaus. To be honest, I'm not sure which is worse. Bumps are when something might not work the way you hoped it did, like a Facebook ad that flopped or a webinar that no one registered for. It stinks! Plateaus are when you go on for long periods with very little forward motion. You might grow a little here and there, but nothing consistent or worth writing home about. This also stinks! You might even feel like you are learning and applying strategies and following best practices with no results. Maybe you followed this whole series (catch up HERE if you haven't!) and still feel like nothing is happening. Your growth is stagnant. THIS POST IS FOR YOU! Listen to Episode 111 - What to Do When You Feel Stuck in Your Growth Subscribe via Apple Podcasts (the artist formerly known as iTunes) or you can check out the Create If Writing Playlist on YouTube. You can also listen right here on the blog on the podcast page with a player like the one right above. Troubleshooting When You Feel Stuck in Your Growth You May Not Be Creating the Right Content While I feel strongly that we should all create the things we feel passionate about, this does NOT mean you will grow an audience. Your content may not be interesting to outside readers. You need to consider writing for other people, not just yourself. Unless you just want to write an online diary. Which is totally fine! Just know that if you are writing only for YOU, it may be hard to grow an audience. For help with this, see a great post from Paula Rollo on How to Double Your Pageviews. You also may be struggling with your writing VOICE. I don't feel like people talk enough about this, but it's hugely important. Your writing voice is how you come across to other people. It's a mix of your tone and the personality and can even get as specific as whether or not you use emojis or ALL CAPS when writing. If you don't have a writing voice (think: your writing is pretty vanilla and could be written by any person on the planet or be included in a textbook) OR if you are writing with a voice that doesn't jive with the audience you're trying to reach, you may get stuck. For help with this, see my post How to Brand Your Writing Voice. You May Not Be Clear on Your Audience When you are creating content, you need to ask yourself if you are meeting the needs of your ideal audience and speaking in their language. If you have a disconnect with the kind of audience you want to reach, you will get stuck. Consider surveying your people you already have. I remember the big shock of finding out that the majority of my audience loves written courses...when I've been creating video courses. Doh. If you are not sure about this one, I have a whole series on Finding Your Perfect Audience that may help! You May Not Be Promoting Your Work Enough (or in the Right Ways) I go back and forth on how I feel about automation and scheduling. I want to be live as much as possible on platforms that are social. But I also have over 300 posts (probably way more) between my two blogs. If I am not actively promoting that content, few people see it. (Except those that come from evergreen search traffic like Pinterest and from SEO.) If you don't promote your posts (or bake in really great SEO), you will struggle to grow your audience. You have to do work to promote. People won't just find you. Sometimes we think of promotion in a bad way, like self promotion, as in self-centered-ness. It isn't. I mean, yes, some people cross that line. But I know YOU won't. Right? :) If you need help here, you may be interested in my post on being a good steward of your content. Encouragement When You Feel Stuck in Your Growth Another big reason that you may feel stuck in your growth is that you are stuck in your mindset. Growth is hard. It's hard for all of us. It isn't just hard for the newbies. It's hard for the people who have full-time businesses. We all have to keep working. We all still have goals. You hit one, then you make another. No one has ever ARRIVED. I mean this to be encouraging! Not discouraging. I mean to say that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I struggle with growth! Still! Always! Sometimes I see results and I love what I do. Other times, I feel stuck and feel like I'm going in circles or stuck on a plateau. Two Truths about Growth: Growth Begets Growth - When you hit certain milestones (especially public ones where people can see your following or growth), growth becomes easier. I felt like it took forever to get to 1000 Twitter followers. Now I'm over 6k and felt like I tried WAY less hard to get the next 5000. This probably has some to do with social proof (people see a higher number and think you must be worth following) and may also have some to do with you hitting your stride with that platform and how you use it. Passion Begets Passion - People can FEEL it when you are passionate. It comes across in your videos through your face, in your voice in your podcast, and in your writing itself. Embrace what you love because it may be much easier to do the work! It will be a joy, not just work. EVEN if you still struggle with growth. You may need to take a class and learn. You may need to step back. Find what it takes to tap into your passion! There may be a rare time when you need to give up, NOT push forward. And if you want to hear a really amazing and honest interview on that, you should check out this episode from The Fizzle Show. Need some growth?? If you know you are in a learning mode, there is a FABULOUS resource that I'm an affiliate for (and have a product in) called the Genius Bloggers Toolkit. You can get $6k worth of books, courses, and other resources for $97 OR attend some great free trainings! Click HERE to check out the trainings or HERE to see what's in the bundle. Today we are going to tackle three reasons why your blog isn't growing. This is the first in a series of Why Isn't My Audience Growing? I see people asking questions constantly in Facebook groups about growth. Specifically people want to know why their blogs aren't growing. It's a complex question! But today I'm going to tackle the top three reasons why your blog isn't growing. And, NO. None of these three have to do with social media! (We'll get to that next week!) Three Reasons Why Your Blog Isn't Growing 1. You're Writing for Yourself, Not Your Audience. Ouch. As a writer, this one really rubbed me the wrong way when I started considering my blog growth intentionally. We all have different reasons for blogging. (And you really should know the why of your blog!) For many of you in my audience, those reasons have to do with loving to write. Yes, maybe you want to also sell books or sponsored posts or make money by having traffic an ads. BUT YOU LOVE THE CREATIVE WORK. I know you! So it can feel like a personal insult to hear that you're being too self-centered about your work. (Plus, who likes being self-centered??) I'm not really telling you that you are self-absorbed, only that your blog isn't outward-focused ENOUGH. Why do people read blogs? Not sure? Think about why YOU read blogs. For me, I might click through to read a blog post if the title grabs me. It relates to me. It's interesting or relevant or solves a problem I have. People read blogs because those blogs offer something. They GIVE to the reader. There is a benefit. Maybe that's a how-to or a series of tips. Maybe that's entertainment or encouragement or inspiration. But there is some kind of exchange wherein the blogger (that's you) gives something to the reader. Readers will not read blogs that don't give them something. And when we write blog posts that are just like online diaries, focused on telling just our life story, people are generally not going to want to read. (The exceptions are if you are already a celebrity, you have a really unique story, you have some kind of "it" factor, or you're a really KILLER writer. Usually we are NOT as interesting as we think we are.) We need to invite readers IN. That doesn't mean we can't write about ourselves and our stories. If we leave our own story out, our blog could be interchangeable with any other blog out there. Not good. Our unique story and our voice NEEDS to be there, but readers need to know there is a place for them. It has to be relatable to them and give some kind of benefit. Even if that is a simple as a few minutes of enjoyment. How to Fix This: If this is your problem (and MANY people struggle here), you need to consider how you can write what you want to write, but also think outward. Consider how you can use your blog to benefit other people and what you are giving them. What does your blog give? What does it offer that a complete stranger might want to stop and read? 2. Your Blog Design Detracts from the Content Just when you thought the first reason was hard to hear...I give you this. But I just want to write! I don't care about blog design, you say. Plus I have no money and don't know blogspeak. I know, friend. I know. I was there! I started on Blogger (which, unless you have a lot of money, will ALWAYS look like a blog on Blogger) and when I started paying more attention to design, I didn't want the clean, white look. I had bright colors and busy backgrounds. It was a hot mess. Here's the thing about design: it impacts the way people read your words. When Rob and I were looking for our first house, we looked at all kinds of places. Some were in pristine condition, some were foreclosures with no flooring and holes in the walls. We are good at vision, so we could see SOMETHING in most places. Except one house. It was older and had original mustard-yellow countertops and shag rugs. It was clean, but it was just so much ugly. Most of all, though, we HATED the layout. We struggled with a vision for the house because we didn't like the floor plan. Countertops you can change, but layout is layout. We bought another house and a few months after moving in, I had this realization as I walked into my master bedroom: this house had the same layout as the house we hated. I couldn't believe it. Even with all our open-mindedness and visioning, we hated a house for (we thought) its layout, then bought a house with the same floor plan...but modern updates. Honestly, we were both floored. THAT IS HOW MUCH DESIGN MATTERS. You cannot underestimate the impact of how you package your words. So if you are a writer and hate thinking about this stuff and don't want to learn to code and don't want to pay someone...you have to consider the cost. You don't have to have the most beautiful blog, but you DO need to have a blog that doesn't detract from your content. How to Fix This: If you don't have a lot of money for design, you can use a simple free wordpress.org theme and just keep it SIMPLE. Simple looks so much more professional than busy. Or consider Squarespace, which is something like $7-10/monthly and is drag and drop. Very clean, very professional. If you're using Blogger, it is REALLY HARD (ie- expensive) to make it not look like Blogger. I love working with Merri from WPTech Cafe and I also love the themes from Restored 316. I'm an affiliate for Restored 316 and am currently using their Refined theme, if you want to check that out. (Being an affiliate means if you purchase a theme, I get a commission at no extra cost to you!) 3. Your Writing Style Isn't Unique This is where it gets confusing sometimes. Because I told you in #1 that it's not all about you, and now I'm telling you that it needs to be uniquely you. What gives? Your blog DOES need to be about other people enough to draw them in. But your unique story and voice and perspective will keep them reading. If you don't have something unique, your blog will be like every other of the million blogs out there. Why should they read or come back to yours? This can be really difficult and takes practice. It will also shift over time and depending on content. But learning to find your unique voice and find how you can weave your story and perspective through the posts makes you stand out. And, even though you're being uniquely YOU, it will draw in the readers and keep them. What IS your story? What IS your writing voice? You need to consider these questions in order to help your blog grow. It's not enough just to write helpful tips for people. Your helpful tips need to have YOUR spin. Otherwise they'll get lost in the sea of other helpful tips. How to fix this: If you haven't been training in a lot of the writing spaces, these may not be questions you've thought about at length. But I've got just the resource for you! Check out my post How to Brand Your Writing Voice. These three aren't the ONLY reasons why your blog isn't growing. The other big key to blog growth is promotion. We'll hit on that a bit in the second part of the series when I talk about why your social media isn't growing. But just so we're clear...you can't write a blog post and think people will find it. (Unless you are an SEO wizard.) Promotion totally impacts this. But you can promote like a crazy person and if people don't feel included, are turned off by your blog design, and don't find something unique, your blog will not gain and retain new readers. So...how are you feeling at the end of this? I want you to know: these are not the only reasons your blog might not be growing. And they might be hard to hear. If they ARE, please take some time after you read this or listen to the episode. Be grumpy. Complain. Send me an email about why you disagree. Then come back a few days later when it feels less personal and really LOOK at your blog. Could these actually be the reasons your blog isn't growing? Ask a friend who is impartial if you need help looking with honest eyes. I do NOT mean to be discouraging or hurtful. What you ultimately need to consider is this: DO YOU REALLY WANT TO GROW? If so: HOW BIG? Because if you want to really grow and really want to grow large, you need to seriously consider these three things. But if you want to write for writing's sake or because of a particular passion, then you can worry about them less. If you want to really grow a platform or build a giant blog, you need to take it seriously. You have to think about why your blog isn't growing...and then what you're going to do about it. Women in Archaeology brings a feminist perspective to a diverse range of topics in archaeology. The post Why Isn't All Archaeology Publicly Available? – Episode 22 appeared first on Women In Archaeology.
This week we explore our mental state of mind, how we reached the point where we have our mean girl voice constantly talking to us, and how to tame it. Dr. Napatia Gettings talks to us about mental health. Seeking aid with our mental health is not a negative, it’s not about fixing something. It’s about being our best self, about being educated, and developing our fullest potential. The thoughts we have on a daily basis causes our emotions: fear, self-doubt, resistance, etc. On a daily basis when we have a self-dialogue, let’s be aware of that dialogue, and choose how we’re going to speak to ourselves. That conversation will be based on our upbringing, but we have the ability to reflect on it and evoke change as to how we speak to ourselves. We can be our own worst enemy. The man vs. woman hierarchy is a system we are living in and is built on comparison. We tend to compare ourselves daily and a way to pull ourselves from that is to accept individuality. We all have shortcomings, and we need to embrace that, and embrace everything that makes us a woman. Many of us don’t even realize the strengths we have. Comparison and the mold Social media plays a huge role in comparison and the mold. It can play a positive or negative role as to how we see ourselves. It h as thrown a huge curveball. We struggle with self-perception, but we don’t’ just compare ourselves to people at school anymore. It’s all day long. Adolescents place a lot of value on the expectation of what they should look like, and social media has created a huge avenue for bullying. Dr. Getting’s Social Media Best Practices Guide was created to help parents with the use of their children’s social media and help them navigate this through it. Young adults, and older people are also affected by what we see on social media and needs to be used responsibly and to our benefit, because it could be a positive thing too. Who doesn’t love to reconnect with grammar school friend?!! Tips for Breaking The Comparison Challenge We need to understand judgement, and adopt healthy perceptions about others. Dr. Gettings runs a conversation she calls Are you full of BS? What is your Belief System like? We judge others based on our own perception of ourselves!! This is huge! You are writing your own life story. What do you want it to say? What is that you’re grateful for? Put your intention to that. Visualize being in a room full of people and list the things you would hate to tell them about yourself. What are you ashamed of and why? How did it become an item of shame? Shaming and not being able to own your truth will completely clog your conscience. People take their lives over misperceptions. FSLers, let’s empower one another and build up each other’s strengths, so that we too can see and love the strengths and beautiful characteristics we bring to the table. Our resident electronics expert, Duncan Gray, is back to answer your audio electronics questions! Duncan and I recorded two hours of answers last week to the questions you asked in the original "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Audio Electronics..." post. So to spare you the tedium of digging through 120 minutes of audio to find the answer to your questions, we've split our conversation up into smaller, more easily digestible podcast. Stick with us until the 33 minute mark, where we answer my favorite question so far that gets to the heart of the amazing relationship between audio and analog electronics. Download the mp3 or listen on iTunes . Subscribe to the DIYRE podcast In today's 45 minute segment we cover: "What troubleshooting process do you recommend when your PCB-based project isn’t working?" "What audible impact does input/output impedance have on the connected equipment. The effect it has upon the amount of voltage transferred is clear, however a more comprehensive explanation on how impedance can alter the sound of interfaced equipment would be hugely appreciated." When impedance can be negligible and when it can have a huge impact on sound. "Capacitors have been causing me headaches for a while now. In pedals for guitars, tone circuits for guitars, audio paths for pre’s, and so on, it always seems like folks go the extra mile to use film caps. Why? Isn’t a cap a cap a cap? Putting aside electrolytics for the moment, and voltage limits, why would anyone use one style (ceramic, mica, polyester, polypropylene) over another for audio purposes?" Why Duncan would avoid ceramic caps in the signal path "like the plague." Duncan ranks types of film capacitors in terms of their suitability to audio. "What parts are most/least to susceptible to heat damage from soldering? Using a hemostat to protect your components while soldering. Straight 5" Hemostat (Amazon affiliate link that benefits DIYRE.) "What do you think the top five safety rules are when building audio gear , whether tube or solid-state?" Which voltages are dangerous? Which are fatal? How to protect yourself from the circuit, and how to protect the circuit from you. "Can you clarify and explain the correlation between audio frequencies & amplitude, and their electrical counterparts current, voltage, and resistance… In other words what does a change in resistance, current, or voltage do to sound waves." The "magic of math": how sound and analog electronics are deeply analogous. Sound and AC voltage: same concepts, different medium Using the concept of "silence" to better understand electrical "ground."
