Satellite Tracking Reveals Increased Global Population Exposure to Floods (2000–2018). Professor Beth Tellman (Chief Science Officer and co-founder of Cloud to Street; Professor at the University of Arizona geography) discusses her peer-reviewed study, published in Nature magazine, using satellite imaging from NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites, equipped with the MODIS optical sensor, to track global flood events. This systematic mapping provides hard data of actual events, augmenting the global flood database, covering 913 observed flood events between 2000 and 2018. Her research identified an increase of up to 24% in the proportion of the population exposed to floods, indicating people are moving faster into flood plains than the general population growth rate. Limitations of the data include satellites being blocked by cloud cover and difficulty tracking sudden events like dam breaks or pluvial events. A significant concern is the underreporting bias of damaging floods in regions like sub-Saharan Africa. 1913 DAYTON

What is the true vow of your life, the one it would kill you to break? This phrase comes from the poem 'All The True Vows' by David Whyte, but there can be no better introduction to this week's guest, who knows how to help people - ordinary, every-day people from our culture - build true, heart-felt connections with the web of life such that we come to know what we are here for, our unique gift to the world, the promise is would kill us to break, what it feels like to be so heart-explodingly in love with the sheer wonder of being alive that we can step out of the world we thought we knew, into the world as it really is, alive with connection to all parts of ourselves, each other and the whole of the more than human world. Bill Plotkin is one of those who has found what he's here for. He's been a Thrutopian activist and cultural catalyst since long before those were buzzwords in our firmament. Over the years, he has been a research psychologist, professor of psychology, psychotherapist, rock musician, and whitewater river guide. Now, I would say he is a visionary, a mystic and an elder. More importantly, he's a map-maker, a way-breaker, a trail-leader of the routes we will have to take to walk out of this moment of dissolution, into a world of remembering and creating anew. Back in the early 80s, Bill founded the Animas Valley Institute, whose central purpose is to assist people through the initiatory process that leads to visionary leadership and cultural artistry. Its primary work is with those ready to undergo the joys and challenges of the underworld descent to soul, which flowers into a life of meaningful service and abundant fulfilment — or a deepening for those already on the journey. In other words, Animas Valley Institute supports people in our culture to find what they're here for, to undergo, in his words, the journey of soul initiation. To embark on this journey requires that people break out of the perpetual early adolescence of modernity and endure the ecstatic initiations of late adolescence and that eventually result in true adulthood and perhaps, for a few, genuine elderhood. Bill offers maps and models for his work in depth and detail. He has four books to date and I encourage you to read them all in order from Soulcraft: Crossing into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche, through Nature and the Human Soul, to Wild Mind and finally, The Journey of Soul Initiation. He writes a blog, Soulcraft Musings, which I also recommend, because we could have explored the basics of Bill's models of human evolution and what it means for people of our culture, who have been subject to what he calls 'systemic human developmental oppression' for many hundreds of generations… and in the long conversation that follows, we did explore the basics of this, but in the days before recording, Bill shared the early draft of a paper called 'A Map to the Next World' and this lit all kinds of fires in my heart and mind and soul—because Bill's capacity to write lucidly the things this podcast is all about is beautiful and sharp and perfect. He writes: 'We need a map to the next world because our current world is clearly in its death throes…We need a map to the next world, a way to navigate the long trail from here to cultures that we will be proud to leave for the future ones — of all species. And nature, as always, including human nature, provides this map, or at least templates for creating one. And we need to translate the map into a contemporary language that we can understand — and act on — even though the journey is necessarily through realms of great mystery. We won't find our way using the maps of other peoples or of other times. We must make our own map.'As and when his paper on the Map becomes available, I'll put it in the show notes. In the meantime, I have included the poem by David Whyte, because truly, it is one of the guiding lights of our movement, and I've included Joy Harjo's poem, also called 'A Map to the Next World' both as a YouTube recording of her speaking it, and the poem, and the book of the same name from which it came. Please do explore these. And now, let's head into the ways we can change our world, with Bill Plotkin. What if the very place you went for safety, love, and divine wisdom turned out to be the scene of the crime? Today we're diving headfirst into the world of spiritual abuse. This week, I'm joined by Katherine Spearing, founder of Tears of Eden, trauma recovery practitioner, and author of a new book, A Thousand Tiny Paper Cuts. If you've ever been told that “God doesn't want your happiness, He wants your holiness” while you were slowly disintegrating inside, well, friend, you're in for a ride. Buckle up, because we're talking:Why spiritual abuse is often so subtle you won't realize you're bleeding out until you're halfway through a panic attackHow high-control religious environments get you to abuse yourself (sick, right?)The toxic theology that turns God into a cranky toddler with a lightning boltKey Takeaways:Spiritual abuse is real, complex, and often normalized. Just because it's subtle doesn't mean it's not wrecking your soul. You're not wrong for wanting peace, freedom, and autonomy. That's not “selfish.” That's survival.Religious trauma isn't just in your head. It's in your nervous system, and it needs gentle care to heal. You get to get your mail from God. Not from your pastor, your husband, or some elder board in polyester pants.Patriarchy is the backbone of most spiritual abuse. If your theology only benefits dudes, it's not the gospel, it's a con. There's a whole beach of freedom outside that toxic church sandbox. And God's not mad you left.Read the full show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources:Grab a copy of Katherine's book, A Thousand Tiny Paper CutsConnect with Katherine on InstagramHop on Katherine's mailing list and get some free resources while you're on her site. We think a lot about how people make us feel, but what about the places we spend our time in? In this episode, we explore how architecture and design influence our physical and mental well-being, from hospitals and workplaces to the spaces we move through every day.Our guest, Tye Farrow, is a world-renowned architect and pioneer at the intersection of neuroscience and design. His new book, Constructing Health: How the Built Environment Enhances Your Mind's Health, reveals how buildings can either harm or heal us.We talk with Tye about salutogenic design, the importance of coherence, and why there's no such thing as a neutral space. Plus we explore how nature and biophilic design play a key role in creating environments that give health rather than take it away. If you've ever wondered why some spaces make you feel alive while others drain you, this conversation will change the way you see the built environment.Show NotesConstructing Health: How the Built Environment Enhances Your Mind's HealthFarrow PartnersFarrow Partners Knowledge Hub | Enriched EnvironmentsFarrow Partners Knowledge Hub | Embreathment The 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design Image Credit: Farrow Partners Architects, Photographer Tom ArbanKeywords: architecture, neuroscience, biophilic design, salutogenic design, coherence, built environment, health and wellness, environmental psychology, design for healing, nature and design, sustainable architecture, mental health, spatial design, human-centered design, Tye Farrow, Constructing Health, healthy buildings, urban design, Serenbe, podcast, wellbeing, placemakingBiophilic Solutions is available wherever you get podcasts. Send us a textMy podcast programming this year is simple – love letters to nature. I invite you to join me in this collaborative project to reweave ourselves to the natural world and each other. Share your love letters with me at fromtheoutsidellc@gmail.com and I will read your loving words to nature on my podcast. How does nature make you feel, how does she sustain you, support you, inspire you, excite you? Read your letters to nature and listen for a response. What wisdom does she offer you? As we profess our deep love and gratitude to our source of life, let us deepen our sense of place, purpose, and belonging. This month, I welcomed the wisdom of acorns, the joy of creating botanical pumpkins with old friends, the first frost, and the return of cardinals to my garden. Listen as I read my October love letter to nature. What moments of joy, love, and gratitude did nature offer you in October?
We've known intuitively for centuries that spending time in nature can give us a boost. But it's only recently that scientists have begun to identify exactly what it is about the outdoors that has such a powerful effect on our mood and our minds. This week, psychologist Marc Berman explores how spending time in nature can actually undo some of the harmful effects of our modern lives.Do you have follow-up questions, comments, or stories about nature's effect on the mind after listening to this episode? Join Rolf Jacobson, Caroline Lewis, and Matt Skinner for Sermon Brainwave as they explore the texts for Christ the King/Reign of Christ Sunday (November 23, 2025) - the final Sunday of the church year and Year C. In this episode, the hosts dive deep into what it means for Jesus to be called "king" and how we understand Christ's reign in a world unfamiliar with monarchies. They examine the Gospel reading from Luke 23:33-43, where Jesus is crucified alongside two criminals, asking: What kind of king is this? A crucified king who sees those we overlook and extends mercy to the marginalized. The conversation also explores Jeremiah 23:1-6 and its promise of a righteous shepherd-king who will execute justice, Luke 1:68-79 (Zechariah's Benedictus) and how it bookends the liturgical year, and Colossians 1:11-20's cosmic vision of Christ's reign. Key themes include: * Unpacking the language of "king," "lord," and "reign" for contemporary contexts * The contrast between earthly kingdoms and the kingdom of God * How Christ's reign is realized person by person through tender mercy * The significance of Jesus riding a donkey as a symbol of peace, not war * God's faithfulness in keeping promises to God's people This episode invites preachers and listeners to reimagine citizenship in Christ's kingdom and what it means to live under a reign marked by justice, righteousness, and mercy. Welcome back to Birds of a Feather Talk Together. Hosted by ornithologists and curators of birds at the Field Museum John Bates and Shannon Hackett, who are married, and also new birders RJ and Amanda Pole. Today we're focusing on a fascinating species — the palm-nut vulture. This is a bird John has been eager to highlight, and once you learn more about it, it's easy to see why. Found in Africa, palm-nut vultures don't eat carrion, but instead their diet is mostly plant based. They're also striking in appearance — mostly white plumage, a sharp contrast to the darker vultures many of us picture — and they're truly impressive to observe in the wild.John has had the opportunity to see palm-nut vultures in the wild, and today he'll share firsthand insight into their behavior and ecology. Here are links to our social and YouTube pages, give us a follow: YouTube Instagram TikTok BlueSky

Send us a textEver wondered how to stay truly clean outdoors without messing up the places you love? We pull back the curtain on camp hygiene with no-nonsense tips for safe handwashing, smart dish systems, and bathroom choices that protect water, wildlife, and your stomach. From what “biodegradable” actually means to why distance from lakes matters more than you think, we break down simple routines that reduce impact and keep your campsite calm and critter-free.We start with first principles: preventing GI illness, avoiding scents that draw animals, and making soil do the filtering work soaps need. You'll learn how to set up compact wash stations, strain food scraps from grey water, and decide when to use a cat hole versus a wag bag in fragile or rocky terrain. We talk gear that works—collapsible basins, light trowels, concentrated soap—and low-waste habits like packing out wipes and diapers, double-bagging scented items, and rinsing away from camp. For families, we offer kid-friendly rules that make clean hands and safe water second nature. We also tackle menstrual hygiene with practical, low-impact options like cups and period underwear, plus tips on storage and rinsing that respect Leave No Trace. Along the way, we share real-world missteps (hello, solar shower rules) and how to read campground and park guidelines so your system fits the landscape, not the other way around. The gang discusses two papers that investigate injuries in fossil bones. The first paper tests hypotheses about the causes of facial injuries in herrarasaurids, and the second paper tests if inferred hunting strategies map onto injury patterns in predators from the La Brea Tar Pits. Meanwhile, Curt provides some hypotheses, Amanda gets spiritual, and James is photogenic. Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): The friends talk about two papers that look at why animals from a long time ago got hurt. The first paper looks at some very old and angry animals with no hair that all got hurt in the face. They try to see why these animals got hurt in the face. They look at all the ways that they could have got hurt in the face and find that it was probably other animals just like them that they lived with that probably hurt them in the face. The second paper looks at two groups of animals that eat other animals. One group of animals is man's best friend, and the other group of animals is from a group that does not care if man lives or dies. Since these two groups of animals are old and from a long time ago we don't know really what they ate but we use other things to come up with thoughts on how they could eat. We look to animals today that are like these animals and think that maybe these old animals ate the same way. But, trying to eat other animals is hard and can get you hurt, and you can get hurt in a lot of the same ways if you jump or run. This paper looks at how they got hurt to see if this fits with how we think they would eat. Turns out that the ways they were hurt makes sense if they ate way we think they ate, with man's best friend running and man's not best friend running. References: Garcia, Mauricio S., Ricardo N. Introduction: The Priority of Prayer and the Word Highlights the necessity of both prayer and engagement with Scripture for believers. Emphasizes that doctrine and theology are essential, but must lead to transformation, not remain theoretical. The Book of Romans: From Foundational Theology to Practical Living Overview of Romans: Chapters 1-3: Human depravity. Chapters 4-5: Justification by faith. Chapters 6-8: Grace, righteousness, and the work of Christ. Chapters 9-11: Continuing theological foundations. Romans 12: A shift from theology (“information”) to practical Christian living (“transformation”). The Challenge of the Information Society Illustrates how technology and mobile devices shape attention, habits, and even identity. Warns against being "discipled" by digital culture rather than by Christ, noting its impact on mental health and spiritual focus. Calls for intentional discipleship—making conscious decisions to prioritize spiritual growth. The Nature of Transformative Faith Positional righteousness (what God has done for us)—must result in practical righteousness (how we live daily). Reference to Philippians 2: “Work out your salvation”—live out what God has worked within. Transformation begins when believers allow the truths of Christ to reshape their attitudes and behaviors, not just gain knowledge. Practical Commands in Romans 12:9-21 Paul transitions from doctrine to rapid-fire practical exhortations: Sincere, non-hypocritical love. Abhorring evil, clinging to the good. Honoring others, showing kindness. Serving God with zeal and perseverance. Being joyful, patient, constant in prayer. Generosity and hospitality to those in need. Blessing persecutors, living peacefully. Humility, unity, overcoming evil with good (not retaliation or vengeance; let God be the judge). Each aspect is meant to be lived out in the believer's daily walk, reflecting true heart transformation. The Issue of Hypocrisy Addresses common criticism of “hypocrites” in the church; urges heart-change and consistency between belief and action. Cites biblical examples (David, Ezekiel) of prayers for a clean and renewed heart. Living Out the Gospel True transformation is evidenced as believers “work out” righteousness, practicing love, honor, kindness, prayer, generosity, and forgiveness. Congregation challenged to examine their own hearts, let go of mere religiosity, and embrace authentic spiritual growth. Communion and Concluding Application Communion performed as a practical and spiritual reminder of Christ's transformative work. Final encouragement to worship, gratitude, and living out transformation in everyday life.
