In this episode of Brain in a Vat, we're joined by Brian Leiter, co-author (with Jamie Edwards) of a new book on Marx. We explore whether workers in contemporary capitalism are truly free—or trapped in a form of “wage slavery.” Leiter uses thought experiments to probe the limits of workplace freedom. He also examines Marx's labor theory of value—its strengths and flaws—and shows how modern capitalism both confirms and diverges from Marx's predictions. The conversation then turns to labor, technological change, human nature, and artificial intelligence—culminating in a pressing question: what futures of work await us under capitalism?Read "Marx (The Routledge Philosophers)" by Brian Leiter and Jaime Edwards here: https://www.amazon.com/Marx-Routledge-Philosophers-Brian-Leiter/dp/1138938505Chapters:[00:00] Introduction and Guest Welcome[00:18] Thought Experiment: Are You a Wage Slave?[02:10] Free Labor vs. Unfree Labor[05:11] Historical Context and Modern Implications[16:07] Capitalism's Role in Technological Progress[20:22] Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work[32:05] The Essential Nature of Human Beings[38:59] Critiques of Marx's Naivety[46:25] Technological Innovation and Labor[51:33] Marx's Labor Theory of Value[58:18] Fetishism of Commodities[01:00:59] Future of Capitalism and Human Nature[01:10:14] Concluding Thoughts on Marx and Capitalism

Stefan invites callers to engage in discussions about the implications of selfishness in humanity, examining whether such traits are innate or influenced by societal conditions. The conversation contrasts the stagnation of government control with the potential dynamism of a stateless society, addressing how moral actions are shaped by societal incentives. Callers raise questions around survival instincts and moral attribution, leading to a deeper inquiry into individual autonomy versus government influence. Stefan invokes Malthusianism to illustrate historical responses to resource scarcity, ultimately advocating for a future grounded in ethical principles, individual liberty, and voluntary societal interactions. Are “the people” really wise and self-governing—or are they dopamine-driven echo chambers manipulated by narrative engineers? Using thinkers like Walter Lippmann, H.L. Mencken, Edward Bernays, Jacques Ellul, Jonathan Haidt, and Neil Postman, Todd dissects the machinery of consent and the myth of the Enlightened Voter. He explores how social media rewires brains, how propaganda evolves into an ecosystem, and why moral outrage trumps rational thought in the Age of the Algorithm. Highlights include: The myth of the rational electorate and the machinery that exploits it Bernays' vision of democracy as a theater of persuasion Jonathan Haidt's “elephant and rider” model as the operating system of tribal politics Tristan Harris, humane tech idealism, and why you can't out-design human nature Digital Pentecostalism, identity marketplaces, and the religion of The Crowd A scathing rejection of both populist saviors and technocratic elites The call for epistemic rebellion and radical individual thought in a conformist age Fast-paced and intellectually packed, this episode hits propaganda, technology, digital addiction, tribal identity, and ideological theocracy in under 30 minutes. This sermon by Pastor Rich Jensen uses the story of Paul and Silas' imprisonment in Philippi (Acts 16) to illustrate the contrast between human nature and the new nature in Christ. Pastor Jensen connects the events—the false accusations, the unjust imprisonment, and the subsequent conversion of the jailer—to modern examples of manipulation and prejudice. He draws parallels between the slave girl's spirit of divination and modern illusions, and between the magistrates' hasty actions and contemporary news rhetoric. The sermon emphasizes that Christianity isn't earned through works but is a transformative gift from God, resulting in a changed heart and life, as exemplified by Paul and Silas' joyful response to suffering. The speaker highlights the Philippian church's diverse origins, united by their faith in Christ, and concludes with a prayer for salvation. The sermon also references Philippians 1:21 and 1:27, and the *Star Trek: The Next Generation* episode "The Chase" to illustrate themes of human nature and the common origin of humanity.#philippians #acts16 #biblestudy #christianity #humannature #salvation #faith #spiritualgrowth #gospel #christianliving Podcast:www.ReformedRookie.comPodcast: https://anchor.fm/reformedrookieFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheReformedRookie Twitter: https://twitter.com/NYapologistSemper Reformanda!

In this special episode of Rewind, Tony Tellado dives deep into the groundbreaking sci-fi epic Babylon 5 — a series that boldly explored the human condition through the lens of interstellar politics, personal transformation, and existential stakes. Aired across five seasons as a "novel for television," the show redefined serialized storytelling and elevated science fiction into an artful mirror of society. Reflections from the late Michael O'Hare, Sci-Fi Talk's very first guest, on the transformation of Commander Jeffrey Sinclair and the emotional weight of his arc. Insightful commentary from creator J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) on the ambitious undertaking of writing nearly the entire series himself — an unprecedented feat in television history. Memorable moments with the late Andreas Katsulas, the soul of Ambassador G'Kar, who also reflects on his time in Star Trek. The unmistakable voice of Jerry Doyle, aka Chief Garibaldi, sharing candid thoughts on his role, the ensemble cast, and the show's legacy. A fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdote: JMS originally pitched Babylon 5 to Paramount — only to be rejected. Soon after, Deep Space Nine emerged. Coincidence or cosmic irony?

Each game strips away the veneer of civilization, exposing what lies beneath—fear, desire, ambition, and the will to survive. But true strength is not found in surviving by any means necessary. It is found in choosing virtue, even when the price is death.Recently, I've been watching Squid Game, catching up on the later seasons. While it's been out for a while, the brutality and moral tension still hit hard. And like any good overthinker—and Stoic—I started asking the deeper questions: What does this show reveal about human nature? And what would the Stoics have to say about it?If you haven't seen Squid Game, I'll warn you now: spoilers ahead. But the premise is simple, and disturbing. Financially desperate individuals—those with massive debts, the homeless, the abandoned—are lured into a series of deadly games. These are childhood games twisted into fatal trials, and for each person who dies, money is added to the winner's prize. A sick trade of blood for fortune. At first, the contestants don't know death is on the line. Once they do, they're given a chance to vote and leave. Some do. But many choose to return. Why? Because they saw the prize money, and with it, a glimpse of hope. A way out of shame, debt, despair. And that's where the moral decay begins. This podcast is listener-supported; if you would like to support the Strong Stoic (as well as gain access to exclusive content), you can do so on Patreon or Substack:Patreon: www.patreon.com/brandontumblinSubstack: https://strongstoic.substack.com

It explains how the Constitution established a government strong enough to secure the rights of citizens and safe enough to wield that power. This course will examine how Publius understood human nature and good government, and why he argued that the only true safeguard of liberty lies in the vigilance of the American people. Publius recognizes that men are neither angels nor beasts. Man is “ambitious, vindictive, and rapacious,” but also is capable of sufficient virtue to make republican government possible.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Human nature and the possibility of utopiaThe idea of utopia - of a perfect society devoid of suffering and inequality - is planted firmly in the human imagination and psyche. From pre-biblical times to Thomas More and communism and beyond, widely disparate groups have attempted to plan or create a utopia. But is it achievable? And if not, why not?Join unconventional psychologist Paul Bloom as he makes the case for the impossibility of utopia given certain key features of human nature. We are not meant, he argues, for perfect harmony and equality. Paul Bloom is a researcher of perversion and suffering, so his perspective brings interesting insights on the question. The Sunday for the Fourth Ecumenical Council Titus 3:8-15; Matthew 5:14-19 Note: the recording includes a few seconds when Fr. Anthony's mind went apophatic and he forgot a critical detail.  Real life is like that sometimes!   First Council: Nicea in 325 (vs. Arius) "And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, Begotten of the Father before all worlds, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made:  Who for us men and our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man;  And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried;  And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father;  And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, Whose kingdom shall have no end." Second Council: Constantinople in 381 (defend the Holy Spirit). Finished our Creed; Holy Spirit, the Church, Baptism, Resurrection, Life in the age to come. Third Council: Ephesus 431 (vs. Nestorius – she gave birth to the man Christ; Christotokos). Jesus Christ was fully God and fully Man. Because Jesus was true God of true God, the Virgin Mary gave birth to God; thus she should be called Theotokos.  Fourth Council: Chalcedon in 451 (vs. Nestorianism and the Abbot Eutyches and the Alexandrian Patriarch Diasocurus (recent robber council) The Fathers accepted the message sent by Pope Leo, which Dioscorus had abstained from reading at his robber Council in Ephesus. In the message, The Pope distinguishes clearly between the two natures, emphasizing the presence of the two natures in one hypostasis. Among the most important conclusions of the Council was that Christ is “perfect God and perfect Man. A true God and a true Man. Equal to the Father in Godhead and equal to us in humanity, like us in everything except in sin. He was begotten from the Father as God pre-eternally and in the last days He was born of the virgin Mary the Mother of God (Theotokos), according to humanity. He is one. He is the Messiah, the Son of God, the Lord who must be confessed in two natures united without confusion nor change, without division nor separation. He was not divided into two persons but he has always been the Only Begotten God the Word and the Lord Jesus Christ”.  In this Chalcedonian definition, the Fathers of the Council re-emphasized the Creed. They also emphasized two other important things: ·      The unity of the person in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is indicated in the “he is one and the same”. The Lord Jesus Christ is One. He is the Word of God eternally born from the eternal Father before the ages, and born from Mary in humanity. ·      That the two natures in Christ sustain their properties amidst the unity of the person. The word became Flesh assuming all the Human Nature except “sinning”, without giving up or abandoning his Divine Nature. Application The Church Fathers chose a gospel to be read in relation to this Council. It is Christ's saying: “You are the light of the world”.  Not just the physical light, but the spiritual light. One of the things that the spiritual light is that we can be full of it ourselves; that we can carry God within us and He can become the light through which we see one another. Not the light of ego or self-confidence; this is a shortcut which will lead us into division (heresy); not the heresy of Nestorius or Eutechius, but the witness of a proud and divisive spirit that actually drives the self and others away from the true light – even while using pious words of Scripture and the Fathers.  This true light is helps us see one another. The Lord says after that: “let your light shine on people so that they can see your work and glorify your Father in the heavens”. This is done not by pious strutting or false humility; but by the way we see and connect with others in the light; by the way we avoid being contaminated by giving in to the dark tempations of the world; and by sharing the same kind of sacrificial light that the Source of Light did when He became perfect man. That is how we can live as a real family with God in heaven as our Father. We avoid sin; and we love one another. This way we can make God's Will come true. The gospel which we heard was chosen to describe the Holy Fathers (whose number is 630) of the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon. These Fathers were the light of the world in both their time and ours as well. We abide by their teachings which were handed down to us. By their teachings we are able to avoid the darkness of heresy. Let us be like them. Let them be our example and model, through Christ, who lives in them, that He might dwell in us too. In today's episode, Tom pulls back the curtain on the hard truths that shape our world, diving into the bloody history and cold calculations that drive geopolitics. Using the concept of “realpolitik” as his lens, Tom explores why nations act not according to ideals, but ruthless self-interest, and how this approach accurately predicts the cycles of conflict, power struggles, and shifting borders that have marked human history. From Genghis Khan to today's nuclear standoffs, Tom examines why humanity's dual capacity for both devastating violence and breathtaking kindness continues to shape the fate of nations. You'll learn the nine core tenets of realpolitik, see how power and survival instincts play out on the global stage, and discover why understanding the unvarnished reality of how nations operate is essential—not just for world leaders, but for anyone who wants to protect and thrive in today's chaotic world. But this isn't just a journey through the darkness of history and politics. Tom also shows how culture, empathy, and pragmatism temper our most savage impulses, offering hope even amidst turmoil. By the end, you'll have a clear-eyed framework for understanding global events, decoding market movements, and safeguarding your freedom in uncertain times. Get ready to challenge your assumptions and build a worldview that actually works. Climate change, global warming – we've all heard the steady drumbeat of doom. But a recent five-year forecast, by the World Meteorological Organization and the U.K. Meteorological Office, puts it starkly: The world will likely soon break another annual temperature record and, according to the Associated Press, the heat will be deadly. What would happen if we embraced the idea that the future still rests firmly in our hands? Is it in our nature to learn, adapt and change? And, equally important, is there still time? Author and climate scientist Kate Marvel dives into those questions in her new book “Human Nature,” on bookshelves now.
