Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People

How can art bring people together in a world divided by race and culture? In this episode of "Everyday Conversations on Race," we explore how creativity can break down walls and build genuine relationships across cultures. Meet two artists who use their craft to challenge boundaries and connect communities. Carlos “Kookie” Gonzalez, a Chicano artist and former gang member, shares his journey from the streets of San Francisco to becoming a renowned muralist. Carlos reveals how he turned his life around through art and now brings people together through community murals that tell the stories of struggle, pride, and resilience. Discover how he engages young people to see art as a path to a better future, rather than a life on the streets. Click here to DONATE and support our podcast Laurie Marshall, an artist and educator, joins Carlos to discuss her "Singing Tree" project, which has united over 24,000 people from 52 countries in creating murals that envision a world of peace and understanding. Laurie describes how this collaborative process invites people to create something bigger than themselves and reimagine what's possible when diverse voices come together. Together, Carlos and Laurie explain how art can do more than just decorate walls—it can change minds, shift perspectives, and unite people who might never have met otherwise. They share actionable ideas on how anyone, regardless of background or skill level, can use art to spark conversations, dismantle stereotypes, and create new stories that connect us all. Tune in to hear powerful stories of transformation and learn how you can use art to bridge divides and build a more connected world.   Guests Bio: Laurie Marshall For 3Laurie Marshall,5 years, Author, Innovator and Artist Laurie Marshall has empowered youth and adults through creative collaboration. Carlos “Kookie” Gonzalez was born in the San Francisco Mission District in 1959. He has been drawing and painting since childhood, and is a muralist, activist, visual artist, retired probation officer, and musician. As a young man, he was required to perform community service that involved working with muralists, and he quickly fell in love with the craft. Gonzalez attended San Francisco State University (SFSU) from 1983 to 1991, where he was a member of La Raza Student Organization. With La Raza, Gonzalez protested for multiple causes including solidarity in El Salvador and fighting for migrant farmworkers. He continues to work on private commissions and a mural project for affordable housing in the Mission District. Gonzalez's work reflects the street life, activism, music, and struggles of life as a Chicano/Latino in the Mission District.    Click here to DONATE and support our podcast Simma Lieberman, The Inclusionist helps leaders create inclusive cultures. After graduating from San Francisco State University, majoring in Mass Communications with an emphasis in broadcast media and writing for television, Asoniti relocated to Los Angeles and held several positions in the entertainment industry. Success was indeed the reward, as she quickly moved up the ladder to eventually write a couple of episodes on Will and Jada Pinkett Smiths' hit sitcom, “All of Us”. She also worked on a number of other sitcoms, including, One on One”, starring Flex Alexander and Kyla Pratt, “Second Time Around” starring Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kojo, and “Just Jordan” a Nickelodeon show. After the writer's strike, Asoniti began independently developing and filming various projects. While honing her skills in creating, developing, and producing, a new passion blossomed in her life, care for Alzheimer's patients. When both her grandmothers passed from the condition, she educated herself about it and planned to be proactive to an ignored class of patients. What she discovered was surprising and saw an opportunity to share her found information. With very little, to no material about why African American women are twice as likely to have the disease she knew it would be fitting to develop a documentary about it. So, she did, and it is titled, “Puzzled”. PUZZLED is an Alzheimer's awareness documentary that will focus on why women are more like to have AD and why African American women are twice as likely to have it than the national average. And this would only be accomplished working alongside her daughter. Although her career goal is to become a veterinarian, she is multi-talented in production and post-production with an eye for creative edits and attractive content. Rey Ortega is an incredibly smart, well-read, and self-taught programming engineer that is driven to help others reach their goals and potential. His mentoring advice to others is “Make sure you do a deep dive and become a problem solver. Apply this in everything you want to learn. If you don't know your stuff, people will know you don't know what you are doing.” Wise words, right?   We talked quite a bit about AI and how it can be used with impact both positively and negatively.   From a technical perspective, what worries him about 2030 is that a lot of technology will take over things that people used to do. People will feel disenfranchised and left behind. Humans are important, it is bothersome low code, no code solutions, someone has to own the data and it may not be you the owner of an idea. As a previous TEDx Orlando organizer and leader, I am asked a lot about how to land a TEDx speaking opportunity. I thought it best to bring an expert that can share that knowledge with us. I know Adam Lewis Walker from one of my favorite events - Podfest. He has been exhibiting and speaking at that event for years. Adam helps authors, coaches, consultants, and speakers become the thought leader in their niche via his TalkXcelerator method to land and deliver TEDx talks that amplify impact and authority. In this episode you will learn more about the TEDx process and some inside tips about landing a talk. His 5 words that describe are interesting. 1) Relentlessness, 2) Kaizen is a Japanese term meaning change for the better or continuous improvement, 3) Pole vaulter shooting for the Olympics, 4) Family, 5) Legacy .The Kaizen concept is an interesting term that makes one pause and realize the value of continuous improvement and a definite ice breaker conversation starter.  His book, entitled “Awaken Your Alpha,'' focuses on awareness, action, and ascension. You can find his book on Amazon. There is a press release about to publish a list of thought leaders Marquis Whos Who in America and Adam was thrilled to be recognized and receive an award.  His best mentoring advice came from his book. Ikigai is a Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living. Similar to a venn diagram, this diagram shows ikigai as the convergence of four areas of life: what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. The very center, where each area overlaps, is your ikigai – your reason for getting up and where you should focus your efforts to find ultimate fulfillment. I met Michelle Moore at a Women in Tech & Entrepreneurship networking event in 2023. She shared a story about how she came from Canada and was looking for a group that helped women in tech become more confident in their knowledge. She is a natural storyteller and listeners you won't be disappointed. Tune in to hear her story how she initially wanted to be a spy, why she changed her mind, switched her career path, and embraced cultural diversity.  One of her favorite authors, Arwana Hayashi (The Art of a True Move) shared  "The body is our primary way of knowing and being in the world. Through the body, we can access deeper levels of awareness and insight. Michelle mentioned Cal Newport's book, Slow Productivity as a reminder to slow down and engage in the world rather than the speed of technology. This is definitely a book I will order.  When musing on what 2030 will be like, Michelle dropped a thought bomb on us. There will be a big desire to be device free because of the advancement and pace that technology is moving. There will be a demand for device free experiences. This will impact the job market to free people of the false sense of the dopamine pleasure and mindless scrolling that happens now. We need to be reminded that technology is designed to pull us away from others. In person experiences will be in demand.  Michelle's mentoring advice to my listeners is “Learn to listen to your gut; tap into your instincts and intelligence, or your Higher Power. I met Diana Teel at the Central Florida Tech Grove when they hosted Indienomicon's Armed Forces Game Jam. She is smart, personable, and someone you want to have on your side. Why? Because she is all five of these words that she shared that describe her. 1. Tenacious -both of her parents were marines and she learned as a young child not to give up, especially if the answer was no - it would likely turn into a yes later.   2. Passionate - she cares about others and the work she does. 3. Curious - so much going on in the world and she realizes she asks “why,” similar to how a child questions to understand. 4. Connector - Diana loves connecting people to others that creates opportunities to get energy flowing that makes magic happen. 5. Holistic - Diana is a breast cancer survivor and that changed her perspective on life. She chose to look at her life and improve in all areas. Nutrition, faith, physical movement, being supportive of others and allowing herself to be supported.  Diana is a driven technologist that wears multiple hats. Let's count them 1. Director of the NavalX Central Florida Tech Bridge,  2. Outreach Director/Chief Evangelist with the Naval Air Warfare Center 3. Director with Team Orlando and  4. Central Florida Tech Grove Tune in to hear her favorite thought leaders from Marcus Aurelius (yes the Roman emperor) favorite quotes to Elon Musk and what she learned from listening to his audiobook. What do you think of when you hear economist? If you are thinking dry, boring, or not funny - then you absolutely should tune in and hear Dr. Sean Snaith shared his forecast for 2024 and 2030. I have been a fan of Dr. Snaith (and he is okay with calling him Sean) for over 10 years. I get the forecasts that are put out by UCF Institute of Economic Forecasting of which he is the director. I asked him what he forecasts for 2024? The world is still working on getting out of the COVID 19 disruption. The economy will slow down and consumers in the US have faced a decline in what money can purchase in previous years before COVID. Labor market is strong right now as consumers are using credit cards. This overall impact on the economy is spending will impact individuals and families if they continue to use credit cards to pay their bills. Checks and balances folks, think how we as humans have unlimited wants vs. limited needs. Decisions have to be made and if resources are scarce. Best mentoring advice shared - It is impossible to know the future. The future is not your final step. There is an opportunity cost with every choice. You have no idea where your future will take you. You can do any job for a period of time as long as you know that it is not forever. Today's guest is a legend in the world of podcasts. His name is Dave Jackson and he describes himself using these five words: “I love to help people.” He is the Director of Education with Libsyn and the founder of the School of Podcasting, his own business, podcast and a published author. Dave definitely has a servant heart, he shared that as a child he grew up understanding how his mom (his superhero) could make the meals and home feel provided for. His dad was a truck driver and on the road a lot. He missed him at the 3-legged race and wanted to help others feel included as he watched other children run a race with their dads. This desire to help others feel important, seen and heard is what led him to start his own business His take on what 2030 might look like is that he is very worried how people will have dialogue with one another when we have become so accustomed to a digital world behind a screen. He believes that human skills will be at a prime demand because technology is advancing so quickly. Can you truly grow your career without working EVEN more? This is a key question host, Tara McDonagh, is asked regularly by ambitious, exceptional, overachieving women. The assumptive answer is always - no. What most of us have always seen and assumed is that when you continue to rise in your career, company demands on your time will grow. Most women are eager and ready for growth, but don't want to sacrifice even more time with family and friends. Is there another way?  Host Tara McDonagh, invites Megan Witherspoon, VP of Communications at Altria, to discuss how she's both grown her career, and embraced a new level of personal fulfillment through remote work. Megan not only works remotely, she moved her family across the country and continues to take on more responsibility in her role at Altria, while enjoying more time for family and hobbies as well.  In this episode of Communications Business Advisor Podcast, Tara and Megan discuss: How Megan was able to move across the country while advancing responsibilities in her company. Using data to measure if there are differences in remote vs in-person worker performance - make the case with data.  Proximity bias. It is a thing. Will it ever die?  Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion implications tied to remote work. Tim Lesnick inspires with his take on what 2030 holds for us, who is Omar Atlas, and the value of philanthropy.  Giving a shout out to Alec Jones - thanks Alec - that he would introduce me to Tim Lesnick who is the co-owner of Trova Search, a nation-wide recruiting and consulting firm. I now understand why since he has over 20 years in the staffing and consulting industry and placed nearly 4,000 professionals on a contract or full-time basis career path.  Tim believes and exemplifies a tenant mindset, called "Read my mind better" which translates to “Great service means mastering the art of anticipation.” I think this would be a great title for a book.    According to research by researchers at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the University of Bamberg, and The Ohio State University objective was to find out whether consciously deciding to have a certain posture can influence a person's confidence, behavior, and hormone levels. Remember the pose that #Superman or #WonderWoman do?  Hands on your hips, feet spread slightly apart, with shoulders back and chest out Tim is a really fun guy and when challenged to join in on power posing he shared another person that had a great power pose, Omar Atlas. Omar was a wrestler that also captured his audience's attention and favor with his power poses. Be sure to check out Tim channeling Omar Atlas' power pose for a laugh. Tim's thoughts? The pose seems awkward except for when doing this with his kids. No judgments, just fun.    Tim's mentoring advice is spot on because it is a challenge for all of us.  1) Be willing to dig ditches because a lot of people try to take short cuts. 2) People need experience and don't know enough about business and put together what they learn in school and it hasn't been built on experience. And 3) Give value to more than yourself by giving to others - volunteer and give back through philanthropy work. We hope you enjoy this week's episode of The Intern Whisperer. I met Pam McGee at an ATD conference last year and was amazed at her confidence, and depth of knowledge in HR. I knew she was someone that should be a guest on The Intern Whisperer. A little about her background, she served in the Air Force and joined when she was 17 years old and served for 6 years.  Impressive, right? She led the conversation with Lead without influence. Those are three powerful words. Think about that for a minute and how to do that in your life. Pam is a go-getter and after leaving the Air Force, went to school and worked full time while being a young mom.  From there her career journey included working for big companies such as Home Depot for 8 years, Ross Stores, and then moving to Valencia College. She holds SHRM certifications in (PHR)/SHRM-CP.  Her thoughts about what 2030 holds for us are built around AI, robots, and what remote work will look like as we continue to move closer to that not too far off date.  Tune in to this episode and learn more about Pamela and reach out to connect with her on LinkedIn. #iHeartRadio #ApplePodcasts #GooglePlay #Spotify #Stitcher #Podbean #YouTube #Employers4Change #E4C #internships #radio #podcast #innovation #employers #smallbusiness #business #FutureOfWork #ValenciaCollegeRadio The Intern Whisperer Podcast is brought to you by Employers 4 Change - Increasing diversity through #Skills based #DiversityEquityInclusion #recruitment and #management for #interns and #employees alike. She is funny, quirky, and smart (Three of her five words by the way). I met Patti at a networking event and overheard her mention that she is the Chair of the UCF Data Analytics Advisory Board. What was even better, is that Patti is really funny. Tune into the show to learn how she got started in data analytics before it was a thing. I also loved the quote she shared that gives her inspiration. “I am still learning.” On the show, we thought this was passed on by Michaelangelo. Turns out it was originally penned by Seneca's 76th Letter to Lucilius published in 65 AD. Shout out and thank you to our Source: ME Carsley. We know that learning is both difficult and wonderful. Fortunately, Lily Zheng (author of the recently-published "DEI Deconstructed: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Doing the Work and Doing It Right") is here to explain everything; not only in layperson's terms, but from a queer perspective! In an incredibly wide-reaching conversation, Lily (they/them) explains how both the acronym "LGBT" and the phrase "people of color" originated as solidarity terms, and demolishes the maddening argument that "it's actually *harder* to be a straight white man right now..." (complete with factual data you can share with all the butthurt people in your life!). We're joined this episode by Miguelina Peralta.  She is Executive Director for EforAll Greater Worcester.  For a decade EforAll has been growing its program dedicated to providing the opportunity, relationships and resources that underserved citizens need to sustain successful businesses of their own.  EforAll provides long-term mentorship and connections often missing in our underprivileged neighborhoods.  We launched with the question, ‘Is economic renewal in Worcester a win if it doesn't include all of its citizens?' Worcester is the second largest city in the Northeast and is located in the center of Massachusetts.  Like many cities in the United States it is experiencing a resurgence through a local economy based on 21st century industries.  Its people are experiencing both the positive and negative effects of that growth.  A rapidly restrictive housing market.  Outside investment competing alongside citizens for local commercial opportunity.  The negative effects of gentrification at the expense of current community members.    EforAll works to reverse such effects by providing for its participants.  Since it began in Lowell, MA the program has grown throughout the Commonwealth and now boasts locations in Buffalo, Colorado, Arkansas and Rhode Island.  It provides programming in both English and Spanish.   Find out how you can become a mentor, a candidate or general inquiries by clicking here.   Full disclosure: host Scott M. Graves has participated in the summer 2022 cohort and can attest to the value EforAll provides.

We all know that 2020 was a wake-up call for a lot of people. It was a time of reflection, a time of change (hopefully), and a time where schools all over seemed to prioritize inclusion by drafting diversity statements. But here we are in 2022, and I find myself asking: Have the diversity statements made a difference? It's not enough for a school to just have a diversity statement up on its website — administrators, teachers, parents and students must be doing the work to make sure the values in that statement are actually reflected in how the school is run. Dr. Renata Williams knows first hand what it's like to help a school turn a diversity statement into a reality, and she came onto the podcast this week to help us learn how we can help our schools do the same. Dr. Williams is an education administrator with over a decade of experience who is currently the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania — the first person to hold this position at the school. She's worked with administrators at the school to design a comprehensive strategic diversity, equity and inclusion plan for everyone from faculty to students.  In this episode, Dr. Williams helps us understand: How we can help teachers feel supported as they integrate anti-racism curriculum into their teaching. How to embrace and foster students' budding activism. How parents, teachers and administrators can work together to make diversity statements have real impact at a school. The value outside experts can bring into helping a school prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion.   Invite Jasmine to speak at your school! Are you a parent or teacher who wants to help your school turn good intentions into positive action by making anti-racist education a priority? First Name Basis is here to help! Jasmine Bradshaw, the host and founder of the First Name Basis Podcast, is an anti-racist educator and former second-grade teacher who has a passion for helping schools make real change. The tendency of Millennials and Gen Z to care about social justice in organizations and how they will leave jobs where they don't see any effort to support equity The role of organizations in social change, and how Steve Pemberton sees the key role they play When employees have to deal with issues like racism, attacks against Asians, lack of support for Black Lives Matter, etc. they can't do their best work. People who consider themselves allies have to do more than say slogans but need to engage and show support What happens when people of color see their white friends stay silent when they see racism, and why we need people to do more than empathize Allies need to step up and stand next to people who are being targeted and speak out against offensive comments and actions Anyone and everyone can make a difference to support humanity, dignity, and fairness How diversity and inclusion are not the same, what organizations can do to ensure that they have both   Listen in to hear more of Steve Pemberton, find out what's on his playlist, and the books and films he recommends.   Steve Pemberton Bio Passionate about building human-centered workplaces that recognize the value and potential of each and every employee, Steve Pemberton has made embracing humanity in the workplace the core of his responsibility.   As the Chief Human Resources Officer of Workhuman, Steve is committed to working with HR leaders and senior management to transform and lead more connected, human-centered workplaces that accelerate learning, engagement and productivity. What did you do in 2020 to make a change for the better? Last year, companies were asked to be accountable and actionable about their diversity and inclusion efforts. The results have been mixed. As Derrick Coleman of Creative Financial Staffing has written, “Improving diversity at an organization does not happen overnight. It will take time and effort for companies to make progress and begin building a more diverse workplace.”  Young professionals and recent grads are eager to see themselves represented in a company's leadership. Diversity and inclusion initiatives are helping to reshape representation across the accounting world.   On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Derrick Coleman to talk about how a diverse workforce is good for both the culture and the bottom line of an organization. Derrick is the Managing Director for Creative Financial Staffing of Los Angeles, where he serves as a practiced leader of GHJ's recruiting division. CFS specializes in the placement of accounting and finance professionals into temporary and permanent positions across a broad range of industries.   Listen to Kelly and Derrick talk about companies' diversity and inclusion efforts in a post-pandemic world: Why is it important to have diversity in the workplace, especially in the world of tax and finance?  Research shows that a diverse workforce is more profitable at the end of the day, why don't we see more companies making more of an effort to improve right now? The tax and accounting fields are notoriously resistant to change. Derrick says education is key; companies need to start having open dialogues about these topics, and really listen to their staff. As a young professional new to the workforce, there's such an advantage to seeing yourself and your identity represented in your field. Derrick shares how companies can begin to make representation more of a priority.  When hiring, how can professionals learn to look beyond their internal biases, from sharing an alma mater with an applicant, to tackling race and gender biases? Search engines, technology, and online recruiting software have already widened the field and can help companies cast a broader net when seeking to hire. But how can firms teach their staff to overcome their biases when it comes to interviews and offers of employment? Derrick encourages teams to go through mandatory unconscious bias training, with an emphasis on retention just as much as recruitment. He says firms have to make the effort to mentor and develop diverse professionals on a daily basis, long after they've recruited them to the team. The demographics numbers regarding who is graduating versus who is managing teams do not match up at all. In other words, it can be hard for new grads to find an influential mentor in their field that looks like them.  Diversity and inclusion commitments start with the leadership of the company, Derrick says. And it's up to the leadership teams to keep the DEI strategy at high priority, and to assign mentors and sponsors throughout their ranks and across all demographics.  How can staff members practice being supportive allies once new diverse employees are in place, without putting the pressure onto that new staff member to educate the rest of the team? What are Derrick's recommended resources for companies just getting started with putting diversity and inclusion initiatives into place? How can staff members work on speaking up on behalf of creating more diversity equity and inclusion efforts, without causing accidental harm or offense in the meantime? Derrick says that everyone will make mistakes along the way; it's important to create a safe space and stay dedicated to your own further education into the subject. Where does Derrick see diversity and inclusion initiatives going in the future, and how can companies keep expanding upon them for a more diverse and inclusive workplace environment?   More about Kelly Phillips Erb:   Kelly is the creator and host of the Taxgirl podcast series. Just like in a peloton we need to surround ourselves with people that we can trust, people that will support and collaborate with us to transform this journey to the finish line into a journey of love, grace, and gratitude.                   Join this week's conversation about resilience here on The Kintsugi Podcast as we talk about my first in-person event since the pandemic began, the Tour de France, and my impending knee surgery.

As a Communication & Inclusion Trainer, Alissa guides people in addressing awkward situations, helping them quickly adjust to things out of their control. In a recent training, when she had to demonstrate that kind of adaptability because of technical glitches, she realized what a gift it ended up becoming for her and for the participants. By having to shift gears quickly and abandon her slides - her plan - she connected more deeply with the audience. They couldn't help but see how she navigated the technical challenge, move through it and adapt, and end up with an even better product in the end. When she acknowledged the challenge, Alissa demonstrated a level of vulnerability that had a positive impact on her audience, likely far bigger than if everything had gone as planned. During our conversation, we talked about the situation as an opportunity, a gift, even though in the moment we rarely can see it in that light. But our reality is that lots of lessons happen that way. We also covered a lot of ground about Strengths, where we've seen our own strengths as talents vs. obstacles, and how we've guided our clients toward valuable self-reflection about where their strengths might also be getting in their way. --- Connect with Alissa on LinkedIn, grab a copy of her book,  How to Listen and How to Be Heard: Inclusive Conversations at Work, and check out her website, Everything's Not Okay and That's Okay. --- ABOUT SARAH: "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.
