Today on Mea Culpa, I welcome back Andy Ostroy, political commentator, producer, and host of The Back Room with Andy Ostroy. We dig into Trump's accelerating authoritarianism, from his push to federalize D.C. police and undermine mail-in voting to his casual talk of a third term. We break down the stakes of President Zelenskyy's recent visit to the White House, Gavin Newsom's role in countering MAGA's propaganda machine, and how the DNC needs to prepare for the midterms. Andy and I also discuss Trump's growing grip on power, his ties to Epstein that continue to haunt him, and how lies, fear, and raw ambition are reshaping American politics in real time. Our August break continues and we're throwing it way back to Episode 34 with Aaron Mankin. A true American hero, Aaron Menken joined Paul Rieckhoff at the Classic Car Club in New York for an incredibly powerful conversation. Having survived a catastrophic IED explosion in Iraq that left him with severe burns and countless injuries shares the story of his journey to recovery with Paul in this riveting conversation. This is about more than just survival—it's about choosing hope over despair and we're sure it will leave you feeling inspired. Aaron's injuries have meant he's had to endure over 70 surgeries to reconstruct his face and body, but he's lifting up others by turning his recovery into a mission to inspire others. He talks about the extraordinary support of Operation Mend at UCLA, a program that not only rebuilt his face but also helped restore his soul. With his trademark humor, he recalls a memorable encounter at the Playboy Mansion, where he found himself in a room with more plastic surgery than any place on Earth. It's a masterclass in turning trauma into purpose. The importance of gratitude and service, and a unique look at how you define a leader and a patriot. His powerful message is a must-listen interview with a man who has every reason to be angry but chooses to be happy and inspire others instead. In “A College Guide for the Perplexed,” our feature essay this month at Mosaic, our focus is on higher-education reform, the future and fate of the humanities, and helping parents of Jewish students figure out the best places to pursue university studies. This is not the first time that Mosaic has dealt with these and related issues. In May 2024, my Mosaic colleague Andrew Koss wrote a searching, provocative essay in which he looked specifically at the field of Jewish studies. In the spring of that year, when campuses had exploded in pro-Hamas, anti-Jewish activism, how did professors of Jewish studies react? How should they have reacted? Andrew probes the history and sociology of this academic discipline in his blockbuster essay “Jewish Studies against the Jews.” Later that month, we invited one of the eminent figures in the field of Jewish studies, the UCLA historian David N. Myers, to discuss the essay with Andrew. Professor Myers, as Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver notes in his introductory remarks to that conversation, is prominent not only in his scholarship but also in his public commentary—on questions of Israeli public policy and defense policy, and American public policy—that is very different from our general orientation at Mosaic. We were grateful that he joined us, despite those differences, and at the end of their interaction, some of the core tensions and disagreements between Andrew and David come to the surface. Their conversation was broadcast exclusively for Mosaic subscribers. Today we're airing as a podcast this dialogue about whether and why Jewish studies as a field has turned against Jews on campus and beyond.

Sam McDowell of the KC Star reports that a bullet was shot through the window of Andy Reid's office in May of 2024 while Andy was in the room. Why would it take 18 months for this story to get out? The timing is curious to say the least, we have a couple theories. JD Vance is speaking out about bringing Elon Musk back into the Republican Party and according to reports, Musk is on board. This could mean the end to any attempt at a third party. An American in Alaska with a WW II era Soviet motorcycle is gifted a brand new Russian bike by Putin. The Royals give one away in the 9th inning but don't lose any ground. The Chiefs trade Skyy Moore which is no small miracle. The Pats coach has a problem at Starbucks. And Lee Sterling of www.paramountsports.com is back with a preview of the SEC and Big 12 and a couple free picks for you in Week Zero of college football.
What if everything you thought you knew about why evangelical Christians became politically active was completely wrong? Today I sit down with one of America's greatest historians of religion, Randall Balmer, to do some serious myth-busting. We dive deep into what Balmer calls "the abortion myth" - the widely believed but false story that evangelicals mobilized politically in the 1970s over Roe v. Wade. The real origin story? It's much more uncomfortable - it was actually about defending racial segregation in Christian schools when the IRS threatened their tax-exempt status. Balmer takes us through this hidden history he discovered firsthand at a 1990 gathering of religious right leaders, where architect Paul Weyrich admitted abortion "had nothing to do with" their political mobilization. We trace how a religious community that once championed prison reform, women's rights, and abolition transformed into today's Christian nationalist movement, and explore what this means for the future of American religion. From Jimmy Carter to Donald Trump, from the Jesus movement to Project 2025, this conversation reveals how evangelicalism lost its prophetic voice and became, in Balmer's words, dangerously "worldly." It's a sobering but essential look at how we got here - and whether there's any hope for course correction. Randall Balmer is one of America's leading historians of religion and a prominent scholar of evangelicalism. A professor at Dartmouth College, Balmer grew up in the evangelical subculture as the son of a preacher before earning his PhD. Balmer is the author of numerous influential books, including Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right, God in the White House, and America's Best Idea: The Separation of Church and State. Episode No. 720 is a summer clips episode featuring artist Tidawhitney Lek. Lek is among the 30+ artists featured in "Spirit House" at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. The exhibition considers how 33 contemporary artists of Asian descent challenge the boundary between life and death through art, including how the spiritual relates to diaspora, connections to ancestral homelands, and the experience of feeling present within multiple cultures and multiple geographies. The show's curatorial framework was inspired by spirit houses, small devotional structures found throughout Thailand that provide shelter for the supernatural. "Spirit House" originated at the Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University, and was curated by Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander with Kathryn Cua. It is on view in Seattle through January 11, 2026. An excellent exhibition catalogue, titled “Spirit House: Hauntings in Contemporary Art of the Asian Diaspora,” was published by the Cantor and Gregory R. Miller & Co. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $45-50. Lek is a southern California-based, Cambodian-American artist whose work examines narratives surrounding and the daily experiences of a first-generation American born to immigrant parents. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, and she's been featured in the Made in LA biennial at the Hammer Museum, University of California, Los Angeles. Her first museum solo show was at the Long Beach Museum of Art in 2023. For years, the job of the Environmental Protection Agency often conflicted with the interests of American industry, but President Trump's new appointee to lead the agency believes it's possible to have it both ways. Attorney, former congressman, and the latest person to take on the mantle of EPA Administrator, Lee Zeldin discusses his de-regulatory approach to a position that his historically been synonymous with the opposite. Administrator Lee explains his misgivings about the Obama-era EPA's Endangerment Finding and how repealing it will benefit the nation financially, as well as how billions of dollars were misplaced under the guise of environmental protection policies. For decades, private equity has been the darling of pension funds, university endowments, and sovereign wealth funds, promising high returns and low volatility. Now, President Donald Trump has made it possible for everyday investors to get in on the magic with his executive order, "Democratizing Access to Alternative Assets for 401(k) Investors.” The order relieves regulatory burdens that limit the access of defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s, to alternative assets such as private equity (but also cryptocurrency and real estate). The hope is to give American workers access to greater choice, diversification, and potential growth towards a comfortable retirement. But Trump's order comes just as longstanding questions about private equity's promise of high returns and low risk are coming to the fore. Has the distribution of returns slowed to a trickle? What does data actually say about private equity's performance, and where is the industry headed? There is also a long standing debate whether private equity is good for society, independent of financial returns. Is private equity actually a ponzi scheme that now threatens the retirements of millions of American workers? To make sense of it all, Luigi and Bethany are joined by Dan Rasmussen, an experienced investor and author who began his career in private equity but has emerged as one of the most prescient critics of the industry. Together, the three of them distill what the state of the industry means for the future welfare of investors, workers, and the American economy as a whole.Bonus: Check out ProMarket's recent series on the impact of private equity in the health care industry.

During his second term, Donald Trump has railed against the United States' closest allies. He has imposed tariffs, threatened to upend security commitments, and openly challenged the borders of Canada, Panama, and Greenland. Historians often look to the past for insight about the present and future. But although alliances have collapsed for many reasons over past centuries, Margaret MacMillan argues in a recent essay for Foreign Affairs that Trump's current behavior toward allies has little precedent. His approach, she writes, “does not suggest a clever Machiavellian policy to enhance American power; rather, it shows a United States acting against its own interests in bewildering fashion, undermining one of the key sources of that power.” A renowned historian and professor emeritus of international history at Oxford University, MacMillan is one of the greatest chroniclers of the grand alliances of the twentieth century and the world wars they fought. She joined Editor-at-Large Hugh Eakin on August 18 to discuss the normalization of conquest and the war in Ukraine, how U.S. allies are calculating their next steps, and what the United States' approach to its alliances will mean for the future. Can you be a Christian without the church? In this timely episode, Dr. Carmen Imes argues forcefully—and pastorally—that Christianity without community is a contradiction. Drawing from her new book Becoming God's Family, she and Dru Johnson explore why so many people are walking away from church and what it would take to draw them back. From church hurt to spiritual abuse to toxic celebrity culture, Carmen doesn't shy away from the reasons people leave. But she also offers theological and pastoral wisdom on why we can't give up on the church. They explore biblical stories of failed community, why Hagar's story matters, and what healthy faithfulness looks like in a flawed body. They also discuss when it's time to leave a church, how American and global cultures can distort biblical community, and why true belonging means discomfort, difference, and even lament. Drawing on stories from her life and ministry, Carmen makes the case that church isn't about getting what we want—it's about becoming who we're meant to be. The slaughter of three Americans innocently driving down a US turnpike in their mini-van by a soul-less illegal migrant third-world invader from India using a 80,000 trailer as a lethal weapon to kill our fellow citizens raises a plethora of interesting questions.First, why do Americans allow our home-grown sanctuary cities to harbor illegal migrant third-world invaders--including those who commit violent crimes upon American men, women, and children--from the lawful consequences of their predation on ourselves and our fellow citizens?Second, why does American allow for the importation into our nation of tens of millions of third-world migrant Indian nationals who are competing for American resources for scarce American resources--particularly high-paying tech jobs, but also of course qualify housing, education, healthcare, social services, and much more--when those same Indians are infamous for corrupting the H1B and other immigration pipelines, for engaging in outrageous nepotism in hiring only other Indian nationals over more qualified American citizens, who laughingly fake their academic and professional credentials, and who bring with them their third-world Indian culture that is entirely alien and inimical to our own American culture, and utterly unsuited to assimilation in any but the most minuscule of numbers? Are these CDL killings the modern immigrant BOSTON MASSACRE that will wake America from its slumber, and lead us to finally checking this third-world invasion of our nation, economy, culture, and people? The #1 guide for understanding when using force to protect yourself is legal. The Quanes think American electoral anxiety and an overall Hollywood Liberal fear of the future in the Trump era play a role in the blockbuster semiotic rules of Blue meaning “the good guys”, Red being “the bad guys” and Purple meaning “the bad guys who could potentially be good guys or at least have good ideas”.We explore this idea by applying it to recent superhero movies in general and finally how it can apply to the new Fantastic Four, which has been a financial disappointment but like the new Superman, was more entertaining than the three of us expected it to be and despite some quibbles we may have about it, points the way to how to fix these endless comic book movie franchises.Follow Liam Quane on Bluesky, Facebook and VERO.Follow Adam Quane on Facebook.Liam's novel Road to Juneau (Beaten Track Publishing) is available in Kindle and paperback!Original teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Matt Shakman, 2025) that briefly features John Malkovich (who was cut out of the finished film)

In 1971 and 1972, American troop withdrawals accelerated under President Nixon’s Vietnamization policy. The South Vietnamese Army faced its first major test during Operation Lam Son 719 in Laos, which ended in a costly failure and revealed the ARVN’s limitations. Domestically, antiwar sentiment intensified, fueled by the Winter Soldier Investigation, rising drug use and fragging within the military, and the explosive release of the Pentagon Papers. In 1972, North Vietnam launched the massive Nguyen Hue (Easter) Offensive, aiming to decisively defeat the South. Despite initial successes, the offensive was repelled with significant help from U.S. air power, including Operation Linebacker and the mining of Haiphong Harbor. While the ARVN held its ground, the costly battle highlighted the fragility of Vietnamization and set the stage for the war’s final phase.
