In celebration of the Pogues' 'Fairytale of New York' EP, we take a detailed look at how their classic Christmas single came together. The Pogues originally formed in London in 1982 by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy and Jem Finer. MacGowan had gotten his start playing in the punk band, the Nipple Erectors, and when that band broke up, he began playing in an Irish traditional music style. Gradually, he brought in James Fearnley, Cait O'Riordan and John Hasler to become a sextet. Andrew Ranken replaced John Hasler as they signed with Stiff Records. Their debut album, Red Roses for Me, was released in 1984. For their second album, they added Philip Chevron on guitar and hired Elvis Costello as their producer. Rum Sodomy & the Lash was released in 1985, and they continued working with Costello for the Poguetry in Motion EP, released in 1986. At this point, Cait O'Riordan left the band and they updated the lineup to include Darryl Hunt and Terry Woods. They signed to Island Records and hired Steve Lillywhite to produce their third album. If I Should Fall from Grace with God was eventually released in 1988 and included the Christmas single, “Fairytale of New York.”  In this episode, Steve Lillywhite describes working with the Pogues at this pivotal time in their career when they were expanding the lineup and becoming more ambitious with their song structures and arrangements. Despite not having experience recording a traditional folk band, Lillywhite proved to be the right producer for the Pogues at this moment. His input and confidence in the studio led to them splicing two sections of “Fairytale of New York” together and also enlisting his wife Kirsty MacColl to sing the female part in the song. Jem Finer talks about his initial writing process for the song and how he wrote two potential Christmas ideas that his wife Marcia dismissed as being far too sentimental. Her input led to him rethinking the song and writing about a down on their luck couple, inspired by people who lived in their neighborhood in London. Finer describes how Shane MacGowan then took the song and moved the setting to New York City and added some key lines that were taken from real conversations. James Fearnley describes the thrill of recording the opening section with just piano and voice and how he practiced repeatedly to be able to get that part right. He talks about how the song deserved an ambitious string arrangement and so he worked out some ideas on a synthesizer before bringing in Fiachra Trench to help with the orchestration. By taking inspiration from film scores like Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in America and Leonard Bernstein's On the Waterfront, Fearnley talks about wanting to bring a cinematic sound to match the classic American story that was being told. From the song's long gestation period of a few years, to Steve Lillywhite bringing the tapes home and casually asking Kirsty MacColl to sing on it, to the inspiration behind the classic “I could've been someone”  line, to the initial disappointment of getting to number 2 in the charts, to the perfect sparring duet partners in Shane and Kirsty, to the anti-Christmas Christmas song that has become timeless, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

BEST OF: With a reportedly historical peace agreement made in the Middle East war has been averted and the world will finally be a harmonious place to live for all people. Sure, if you believe in the framing of that narrative. Reality is much different. The so-called “peace” deal was only agreed upon for two major reason: one, the President had to ensure Israel would not break it, because this is all they have ever done to such agreements; and two, because Jared Kushner was the architect, the same guy who wants to build, with Trump, a resort in Gaza. At home it was Stephen Miller who is credited as the architect of a militarized police state, the same guy behind White House policy who said the President is now operating with “plenary authority,” total authoritarian rule. How naive are we? Within hours of the peace announcement, Israel was claiming its enemies were simply regrouping and that soon an American city may be in the crosshairs of a nuclear attack from Iran. This is just days after we were told that terrorists were going to dress like the Village People and bomb hospitals in the US. Since the President has been labeled a “savior” and “messiah” of the Jewish people by Mariam Adelson, it appears the plan is set. The peace will not last long and will be violated in a way that triggers a larger war. The nihilists will be unleashed, Christianity and Islam will go to war, and the Jewish state will fulfill their Talmudic prophecy about the antichrist; about non-Jews becoming servants of Jews. The push for Armageddon optics is so obvious and yet Christians tend to go along with it because what it implies for their own belief. The notion that America should invest only in Israel, ban other religions, and create a Judeo-Christian theocracy is a growing cancer. In this way, it appears that Jesus himself is the reason for the treason. Otherwise, one does not need Jesus or Christianity to have a safe, clean, high-trust, advanced society. He is also a Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and a lecturer at The Ohio State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in political science in 2023. Before transitioning to full-time political analysis, Trende practiced law for eight years at firms including Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Hunton & Williams LLP, holding a J.D. and M.A. from Duke University and a B.A. from Yale University. Even national leaders have echoed these allegations, often without defining what “systemic racism” actually means. When examined closely, the arguments fall apart: Claims of widespread racial animus ignore how aggressively modern institutions punish and correct discriminatory behavior. Assertions that past racism explains all present disparities assume causal links unsupported by evidence. Psychological theories of subconscious bias have been widely challenged and debunked. Disparity-based arguments focus solely on offenders while ignoring victims, who are disproportionately minority themselves. Perhaps most troubling, many proposed “solutions” would harm the very communities they claim to protect by reducing safety, enforcement, and accountability. The Bottom Line The conversation reaches a clear conclusion: the claim of systemic racism in American policing and the criminal justice system does not stand up to scrutiny. That doesn't mean reform isn't needed or that every police action is justified, but it does mean debates should be grounded in facts, not fear or political convenience. The On Guard crew takes a look at a longstanding queer dance art form that has deep roots within the gay men's leather community. Flagging (no, not the hanky kind) developed from fan and t-shirt dancing prominent in early American leather dance and later circuit party club culture. Today it is most commonly done using specially-made weighted silk flags spun while dancing. The modern iteration of flagging has seen a revival in recent years. The On Guard crew wants our audience to experience the joy of this unique queer art form while we discuss its leather roots and tangential cultural influences.

For the fifth time in the history of the podcast, Team Vintage Sand returns to one of its most popular formats: the Hidden Gems episode. As we did in episodes 11, 30, 40, and 53, Michael, John and I each choose one film to discuss that we feel has been underappreciated and overlooked by the madding crowd yearning to see anything besides a prequel, sequel, spinoff, or reboot. And while the episode features three films that could not be more different from one another, the one thing that they do have in common is that they are definitely movies made for grown-up sensibilities. Michael kicks things off by taking us back three decades to Nobody's Fool, a film written and directed by the great Robert Benton and featuring one of Paul Newman's best performances, which is saying something. Benton's script, as well as a ridiculously good cast featuring Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, a young Philip Seymour Hoffman and, in her final performance, the matchless Jessica Tandy, remind us of how unfortunate it was that this film, while not exactly overlooked, got lost in the Oscar tsunami that was Forrest Gump. I once again focus on an imperfect but powerful and prescient film, in this case Cary Joji Fukunaga's low-budget debut from 2009 Sin Nombre. Fukunaga tells the story of a young man from Chiapas and a young woman traveling with her uncle and father from Honduras who meet on the treacherous and often terrifying train ride through Mexico to the American border. A decade and a half before the dehumanization of people like Willy and Sayra became government policy, Fukunaga spares us nothing in showing us the humanity, resilience, strength, and decency of these people and why they feel compelled to make this almost suicidal journey just in the remote hope of finding a better life. Finally, John shines the spotlight on City Island, a sweet and gentle comedy from 2009 featuring Andy Garcia and Juliana Margulies as the parents of a family living in the titular unique and lovely section of the Bronx. The father, Vince, played by a charmingly understated Garcia, is a corrections officer with dreams of becoming the next Marlon Brando, and is taking an acting class (and eventually going to an audition) without telling anyone. But that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the secrets this family is keeping from one another. Featuring supporting performances by old pros like Alan Arkin (as Vince's acting teacher who hates pauses) and Emily Mortimer as a friend he makes in the class who may have secrets of her own, the film is a lovely slice of life that contrasts its uniquely placid setting with the universally complicated dynamics of family and of wrestling with both one's past and one's dreams. So please enjoy, go see the many great films that are playing in theaters as the year comes to a close, and have a peaceful and restful holiday!

In Appropriated Tales: Race and the Disney Fairy-Tale Mode (Wayne State UP, 2025), scholar Michelle Anya Anjirbag examines Disney's method of fairy-tale storytelling to determine how the corporation has shaped public understanding of what fairy tales are and who belongs within them. Covering a span of years "from mermaid to mermaid"—from the 1989 animated The Little Mermaid to the 2023 live-action remake starring Halle Bailey—she deconstructs and interrogates Disney's corporate commodification of multiculturalism and diversity, centering its impact on misrepresented people and cultures over the stated intentions of the producers. Further, Anjirbag demonstrates that Disney shapes childhood experiences and imagination in a way that strategically promotes American cultural imperialism. Through close film analysis, applied critical theory, and social analysis of the Disney corporation, Anjirbag unearths a new framework for studies of Disney fairy tales and how they shape popular culture. The show starts off with Sami's review of the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica AWD, which boasts a peachy engine and cool seats that can hide away for more storage as needed, but Sami points out there are more than a few concerns with the American company's minivan, and it may be starting to feel a bit old these days. Then Benjamin reviews the 2026 Honda Odyssey, which he pilots through a pair of hefty snowstorms. Though it lacks the all-wheel-drive and versatile seats of the Pacifica, he has more than few reasons to recommend this mighty minivan.
