Send us a textI'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. As a leader, you're going to have to talk. From boardroom presentations to team meetings, public speaking is an unavoidable reality of leadership—yet it's often the skill we're least prepared for when stepping into leadership roles. The question becomes, "How can leaders prepare to step behind the podium and truly connecting with their audience?"In this episode, Matt Drinkhahn, high-performance coach and host of The Eternal Optimist podcast, will explore the fundamental shift that turns average speakers into exceptional ones. Matt reveals his journey from focusing on himself (his appearance, his memorized script, his performance) to genuinely serving his audience - pivotally reorienting everything about his speaking effectiveness.Drawing from his experience delivering over 175 speeches to audiences of up to 2,000 people, Matt shares practical frameworks for speech construction, including the "spider web" approach that liberates you from memorizing every word while maintaining focus on your central message. You'll hear candid stories about his biggest speaking disasters—from splitting his pants onstage to completely freezing mid-presentation—and how these moments became invaluable learning opportunities rather than career-ending catastrophes. This episode offers actionable strategies for preparation, delivery, and recovery when things inevitably go sideways. Learn how to read a room, pivot when necessary, leverage modern tools like AI for preparation, and collect meaningful feedback to continuously improve. Most importantly, discover how shifting your focus from impressing to serving creates an authentic connection that resonates with any audience.Ready to step up to the microphone with confidence? Whether leading people through a 15-minute meeting or a years-long pandemic, communication requires compassion. For Dr. Anthony Fauci, that means being clear about who we're speaking to and concise in what we say.As one of the world's leading experts in infectious diseases and public health, Fauci has been America's most trusted voice during the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises. Whether addressing groups of fellow scientists and specialists or everyday people, his communication approach is the same. "Know your audience," he says. "Decide what your message is and make it crisp [and] clear."In addition to being clear about the known facts, Fauci advocates for equal transparency about the unknowns. "Be totally transparent into what you know and what you don't know," he says. "Transparency, honesty and a little bit of humility — let the audience know that you don't know everything."In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Fauci joins Matt Abrahams to discuss how leaders can communicate more effectively by staying focused on what matters most. Hey Podsters! Ready to level up your public speaking game? Whether it's the boardroom, a client presentation, or even a networking event, owning the room can make all the difference for you personally and professionally. Today, we're talking about how to leave a lasting impact—not just with what you say, but with how you make people feel. Here are three game-changing tips to help you do just that. Know the RoomI know, sounds basic, right? But this little detail is everything. Knowing the physical space can turn a good presentation into an unforgettable one. Check out the venue online ahead of time. Is it full of windows? You might need darker slides. Is the AV setup tricky? Get there early, do a sound check, and get familiar with where people will be sitting. Trust me, even something as small as a room layout change can throw you off your game if you're not prepared. Pro tip: Let people know what to expect. If the room's cold, remind folks to bring a sweater. Far from the elevator? Tell ‘em to wear comfy shoes. These small touches matter more than you think! Connect with the RoomAnd by "the room," I mean the people in it. Send out a quick questionnaire before the event—find out who they are, what they care about, or the kind of jargon they use. When you step on stage, start with a story. Whether it's a travel mishap, a funny experience, or something current, stories break the ice and make you memorable. People don't remember bullet points—they remember feelings. So, make them feel connected from the jump. Engage with the RoomInteraction is key. Ask questions like, "How many of you have heard of this concept?" Raise your hand, nod—do something that gets people involved. If you see them drifting or scrolling through their phones, reel them back in with a phrase like, "I know we're all busy, but what I'm about to say is really important." And if all else fails? Mix it up! Have them chat in groups or do something interactive. Keeping people engaged will make sure you—and your presentation—are unforgettable. So next time you step up to present, remember: Know the room. Connect with the room. Engage with the room. These tips are tried and true, and I promise they'll help you own any stage. Until next time, go out there and own that room, Podsters! Artificial intelligence can now do a lot of things. But if you're worried about it taking your place as a communicator, Russ Altman says you need to question why you're communicating in the first place.Altman is a professor of bioengineering, a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and host of Stanford Engineering's podcast, The Future of Everything. According to him, advancing technology isn't a threat to human creativity and connection, but a tool we can use to raise our own standards for communication.“If you're worried that a ChatGPT-type tool can replace you, you need to [ask]: Why am I communicating? What am I trying to say? Do I have a message?” he says. “If those things are true, it shouldn't be a problem. It should actually amplify and improve your message.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Altman and host Matt Abrahams explore how effective communication can help us envision, articulate, and navigate towards our desired future, in our relationships, in our work, and in society.Episode Reference Links:Stanford Profile: Russ B. “Anything is fixable,” say Frances Frei and Anne Morriss. As cohosts of the Fixable podcast, they're typically the ones doing the fixing, but on this special episode, they turn to Matt Abrahams for tips on what to do when communication breaks down. Both Frei and her wife Morriss are public speakers; the former, a professor at Harvard Business School, the latter, a CEO and best-selling author. As they discuss with Matt Abrahams, perfectionism and self-doubt can often creep in, both during preparation before speaking and after the fact. According to Matt, effective communication is about “connection, not perfection.” Instead of putting pressure on ourselves to “get it right,” Matt encourages us to shift our focus from ourselves to those we're speaking to. “Whenever you're communicating, you're in service of the audience you're communicating to,” he says. “It's not about you, it's about them and what you can do for them.”In this podcast episode, Frei, Morriss, and Matt explore frameworks and strategies for speaking more spontaneously, building confidence, managing anxiety, and course-correcting when communication goes awry.Episode Reference Links:Fixable Podcast: Website Anne Morriss & Frances Frei: Website Anne Morriss: LinkedIn Frances Frei: HBS ProfileConnect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> thinkfast@stanford.eduEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn Page, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInStanford GSB >>> LinkedIn & TwitterChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionMatt Abrahams introduces the episode, a collaboration with the Fixable podcast hosted by Frances Frei and Anne Morriss.(00:04:58) Mission of Spontaneous Speaking Matt discusses his focus on helping people communicate more effectively in unplanned situations.(00:07:10) Audience Centered Communication The importance of focusing on the audience to reduce anxiety and improve communication.(00:09:51) Connection Over Perfection Prioritizing connection over perfection in communication.(00:11:00) Benefits of Effective Communication The benefits of improving spontaneous speaking skills.(00:12:17) Building a Communication Infrastructure An outline of helping organizations create supportive communication environments.(00:13:33) Six Steps to Better Communication A six-step process to improve spontaneous communication, covering mindset and messaging.(00:16:55) Managing Communication Anxiety Strategies for managing anxiety in high-stakes communication situations.(00:21:00) Handling Blanking Out How to handle and recover from blanking out during a speech or presentation.(00:25:21) Real-Life Experience A recent experience of underestimating time during a keynote and how the situation was managed.(00:27:44) The Value of Preparation The importance of preparation in both spontaneous and planned communication.(00:28:43) AMP and Building ConfidenceThree immediate strategies for reducing anxiety right before speaking.(00:31:53) Conclusion See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
