Wyatt MichaelTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Wyatt Michael. My wife and I saw Wyatt perform live at a jazz club in San Antonio and I just had to get him on the show. In this episode, we get to know about Wyatt's early years singing in a rock band, and how he discovered jazz and the American Standards. He lets me play one of his songs from that rock band so we can get an idea of what he USED to sound like. Then we dive into his love affair with the Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble style of music. He shares funny stories about some of his first live gigs in this new style, as well as 'The Curse of the First Dance'. Next, we get into his time on the NBC reality competition show The Voice. Wyatt explains how he came to be part of the show, what his experience was like, and some behind the scenes tidbits. Naturally, I ask if I can play a song that he wrote and performed in this crooning style, that I just adore. of course, we cover his recent move to Las Vegas, and where he can be found belting out the great American Songbook. Make sure to check SingWithSwing.com for tour dates and upcoming shows.

Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on pianist Marcus Roberts.Roberts plays jazz piano like he's lived through its entire history. His style pulls from Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller as much as it does from bebop. He spent years in Wynton Marsalis's band, has performed piano concertos with Seiji Ozawa, and today leads The Modern Jazz Generation, a 12-piece ensemble encompassing three decades of musicians.Roberts is here today to talk about something beyond performance. He's one of twenty artists awarded a grant from the Doris Duke Foundation's Performing Arts Technologies Lab. His project tackles a technical problem that's plagued remote music collaboration: latency. He's working to get the delay below 40 milliseconds so musicians in different cities can actually play together in real time.Roberts has been blind since age five, and he's used technology his whole life to access music and create it. From Braille music notation to AI-powered tools, he shows us how tech can serve artists rather than replace them. And that's just a hint of where this conversation goes.(The first two musical excerpts heard in the interview are from a Marcus Roberts live performance, Jazz in Marciac 2024)–Dig Deeper• Visit Marcus Roberts at marcusroberts.com • Check out Marcus Roberts' music on Qobuz • Marcus Roberts on Wikipedia • Marcus Roberts - 60 Minutes Profile "The Virtuoso" (2014)• Jason Marsalis - drummer in Marcus Roberts Trio and The Modern Jazz Generation • Rodney Jordan - bassist in Marcus Roberts Trio • The Modern Jazz Generation - Roberts' 12-piece ensemble founded in 2012• Dig into this episode's complete show notes at podcast.thetonearm.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? His father, Saturn, ignored him without acknowledgment. Totally abandoned, Apollo the Greek god of the Sun, light, music and prophecy adopted Chiron. Teaching Chiron the arts, science and the mysteries to overcome his beastly nature.Chiron's primary wound of rejection became alchemized as a Master Healer who in turn taught gods, mortals and demigods. Up Yours!”. She went on to form Essential Logic, a post-punk band with duelling saxophones that released one album in 1979. 43 years later she released a second Essential Logic album together with a box set of her back catalogue. Essential Logic plays a post-punk mix of punk, jazz, reggae and funk. Her life took a detour in the ‘80s when she joined a Krishna community, became a mother, and dropped out of music for 25 years. Episode 450 – CFP Chaos, WNBA CBA Fight & Giannis-to-Knicks Debate | Sports ChasersIn this Thursday Night Live (Saturday Morning Edition), the Sports Chasers crew goes deep on the College Football Playoff, WNBA collective bargaining, and NBA superstar power moves. We open with CFP controversy as Texas and Miami sit on the outside looking in of the new 12-team field. The crew breaks down committee bias, strength of schedule, head-to-head logic, SEC privilege, and why a computer-driven system (RPI-style) might be more fair than the human “eye test.”From there, we shift to the WNBA CBA negotiations. The focus? Revenue sharing, not just yearly salary. We talk about streaming money, the growth of the women's game, and why a shorter 3–5-year deal with opt-outs could be crucial as the league's value climbs. Then it's NBA time: Chris Paul's exit, veteran stars losing leverage as their games slip, and the big one – Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors to the New York Knicks. Is it worth sacrificing depth and role players for a generational two-way star? We compare Giannis vs. Carmelo, discuss roster building under the salary cap, and look at the broader East/West picture with squads like OKC, the Knicks, the Jazz, and more.

Bryan Carter is a Grammy and Tony Award-winning drummer, vocalist, composer, arranger, orchestrator, and bandleader. After completing his training at The Juilliard School, Carter played with legendary artists including McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Barron, and Kurt Elling. In addition to working in the worlds of film, television, and Broadway, Bryan founded "Jazz at Pride," a non-profit organization dedicated to curating performances and educational engagements featuring world-class artists from the LGBTQIA+ community. Bryan most recently served as co-orchestrator for Broadway's “Some Like It Hot,” for which he and his co-orchestrator Charlie Rosen made history as the first orchestrators to sweep all three major awards in a single season: the 76th Annual Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations, the Outer Critics Circle Awards, and the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Orchestrations. Rosen and Carter continued their streak of success at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards, winning the title of Best Musical Theater Album as producers on the recording. In the fall of 2024, Bryan premiered “Rustin in Renaissance,” a seven-movement oratorio on the life of civil-rights pioneer Bayard Rustin. The premiere was held at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room and coincided with the 20th anniversary of “The House of Swing.” In this episode, Bryan talks about: Playing multiple instruments and musical roles since early childhood  His orchestration role on “Some Like It Hot” that garnered him a Tony and a Grammy His experience at Julliard, and feeling like the curriculum put him in too small a box Looking around for “who was hiring” in New York and what that looks like on that scene The New York tradition of older established artists seeking out younger musicians and giving them a platform Writing and playing for George Clooney's Broadway production of “Good Night and Good Luck” How using piano for composition has made him think of drumming from an arrangement standpoint  Welcoming how different performers offer different interpretations of what he writes Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage

Episode 470 - Exploring Jazz as Therapy: Kurt Ellenberger Talks Kind of Blue and Musical Healing

Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks, the show that explores how music can lift us out of the valleys of depression and anxiety and into brighter emotional terrain. In today's episode, host James sits down with pianist, composer, educator, and prolific writer Kurt Ellenberger for a deep‑dive into the world of jazz, its pedagogy, and its power to heal. We'll hear Kurt recount his path from a performing career in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to a long‑standing faculty role at Grand Valley State University where he teaches everything from “Jazz in the Culture” to a beloved interdisciplinary course, “Music, Culture, and Aesthetics.” He shares practical advice for newcomers who feel intimidated by jazz—starting with the universally‑accessible Miles Davis classic Kind of Blue—and explains why jazz demands full, focused listening in the way classical music does, unlike the background‑friendly nature of pop or country.Kurt also opens up about his parallel life as a writer and managing editor of the Journal of the International Association of Jazz Educators. From a blog that caught the eye of the Huffington Post to a series of essays that demystify everything from why Christmas music feels “jazzy” to the emotional weight of minor chords, his mission is simple: turn scholarly insight into stories anyone can enjoy. We'll explore how jazz varies across continents, why European and Australian approaches sound distinct yet remain unmistakably jazz, and why the genre is less a fixed style and more an improvisational mindset. Kurt even reveals a surprising non‑musical talent—his knack for home‑repair and hammer‑work—that keeps him grounded when the academic world gets heavy. Finally, we close with Kurt's personal “Rushmore” of musical heroes—Genesis, pianist John Taylor, composer Paul Hindemith, and David Bowie—plus a secret, deeply moving piece that leaves him speechless every time he hears it.If you've ever wondered how to get into jazz, why it's sometimes dismissed as “wrong notes,” or simply want a heartfelt conversation about music's therapeutic power, you're in the right place. Grab your headphones, set aside the background noise, and let's tune into the conversation that proves—once again—when words fail, music truly speaks.
