I'm honored, and I'm turning purple--'cause I'm blushing, you know what I'm saying? So for those of us who don't know you, and I know I gave a little bit in the intro, would you mind telling us a little bit about yourself?Nicaila: Sure, sure. So yeah, you covered a lot, but I guess from what you didn't cover--so, you know, at the core, I am a dreamer, I am a storyteller, and when I was young, that looked like me being the little girl who loved, you know, making up stories, just being by herself in her own world, and later in life [it] would manifest in this career in marketing, specifically social media marketing. So I have over 10 years of experience in that lane, and while I was figuring out my life's journey, what ended up happening is--throughout my life I've side hustled and come up with different things a few times, but coming out of grad school I had a hard time finding a full-time role, and that led me back to the side hustle path, but this time I was determined to actually grow it to the point where I could do my own thing. So the side hustle was the podcast, Side Hustle Pro podcast like you said, and I was able to market and monetize it to the level where I was able to quit my full-time job and turn my side hustle into my full hustle, and now I coach emerging podcasters in my Podcast Moguls program because I want other people to be able to have that experience. And since I have a lot of jobs and, you know, that's just in my blood like you said, I'm also an app creator. So my husband and I recently launched the Color Noir app, which is an app devoted to all things melanin and Black Girl Magic. So really excited about that.Zach: Man. First of all, I love this. Yes, I love the Color Noir app. Definitely in Podcast Moguls. We're gonna talk about that as well. You know, it's interesting, 'cause my--I know that you talked about, like, you know, how you made the side hustle your full hustle. I feel like the scariest part of anything is getting started, right? So you talk about--you talk about kind of not really knowing what you wanted to do after grad school, but, like, plenty of people finish grad school and don't know what to do, and then they figure--you know, they do something. They end up going back to industry, or maybe they teach or something like that. What was the igniter for you to actually launch Side Hustle Pro specifically?Nicaila: So the igniter for me was really rejection. I got rejected so many times in that period between when I graduated from Michigan--I went to the University of Michigan for my MBA.Zach: Shout-out [?].Nicaila: Shout-out. Go Blue. Graduated in May 2015, and [I] didn't end up landing a full-time role until December of 2015. So between that time I had a whole bunch of rejections. I'm talking about--there was one company, I went on an interview--I had six interviews with, and I just knew I was gonna get that role... did not get the role.Zach: Mm-mm! [read: No!]Nicaila: Yeah! So what happened is I started blogging again and interviewing people, 1. because I was trying to figure out, "Okay, what can I do? I know I love writing. I know I love social media. Let me just explore and continue to work on things that bring me joy. I don't know what it means. God, I don't know how to make a career out of this," but I figured that while I don't have a job I should at least nurture those skills. So that was the initial impetus to just start the blog, and I was particularly interested in black women who were side hustling but were able to build out their business on the side, because 1. I was so tired of being rejected I was like, "Oh, I'm done with corporate. Even when I got a job, I gotta do my own thing. I gotta do my own thing shortly after, like, the last job I'm gonna get. No one's ever gonna be able to reject me again." And then 2. I also knew that, again, I was gonna go back to corporate and that anything that I was gonna start would have to start as me building it on the side.Zach: One thing you said that I love is that--what I've observed, especially for, like, younger folks, millennials--millennials ain't really younger no more. We're, like, not the youngest people [?] anymore. What we'll do is, like, you know, we don't know what we're doing, where to start, so we just kind of sit on our hands, and part of your story was you were like, "Look, I'm not getting a job. I'm gonna do something." Like, you took that and you used that energy and put it towards something that eventually manifested into something viable, and that's just--that's so inspiring to me, like, no boost, because I think a lot of times what I've noticed is, like I said, we'll just kind of, like, sit on our hands and be like, "Well, I don't really know what to do, so I'm not gonna do anything." It's like, "Well, no. You could do something," you know what I'm saying? Like, you could do--like, figure out--figure out something. Like, take that energy and put it towards something. Make it--Nicaila: Absolutely, yep.Zach: Yeah, make something--like, do something productive. Man, so that's just super dope. So, you know, we talked about the first scariest thing. I think the second scariest part of doing something entrepreneurial is realizing like, "Oh, snap. This is something I can actually do full-time." So, like, as you were building out Side Hustle Pro and as it was growing, at what moment did you go, "Ayo, this is gonna be me for real"? Like, "I got this"?Nicaila: So, you know, I kind of had two of those moments in my journey. So the first one happened when I was freelancing. So because I didn't have a job I was able to land, like, a freelancing gig with this organization, Management Leadership for Tomorrow, MLT, which prepares, you know, under-represented professionals for the career field and also has a super dope MBA prep program, which I went through, and I also went through it in undergrad.Zach: Yeah.Nicaila: Folks at MLT Family, much love to them, because they gave me a freelance role as a social media marketer during that summer while I was finding my way. That was one of the first moments where I was like, "Yo, I could--you know, worst comes to worst I could maybe start my own social media consulting agency. That's one thing I could do." But I kind of pushed that to the side because I was like--I just didn't know how I would start that, how I would get any clients and what that would look like, and I wasn't sure if that's what I wanted to do. So continued to do that, continued to interview, got my full-time role--which ended up being at NPR, National Public Radio, in Washington, D.C., doing social media for their programming and their podcasts, ironically. So as I was doing that I ended up turning the blog into a podcast at that point, and the moment when I thought "I think I could do this full-time" is when I decided to start going after sponsorships. So within six months of the podcast launching, I pitched my first sponsor, and it just so happened that cold pitching--I landed that first sponsorship contract, and it was $4,000, and it's like, you know, $4,000 living below your means? Like, that could cover me. Like, I could live off that.Zach: Ayo, straight up.Nicaila: So I was like, "Wait a minute." I really went hard. "I could do this full-time." So that was that first light-bulb moment.Zach: Man, that's really cool. The other thing--and your story is, like, just putting yourself out there, right? You took a shot. Like, you had some evidence under your belt that, like, this was something viable with the podcast, and you said "Okay, I'm gonna put something together," and you--and you made it. That's really cool because, you know, people out here trying to pitch and stuff all the time, and I know we're gonna talk about Podcast Moguls in a little bit, but everybody doesn't make it on their first attempt, you know what I'm saying? Like, you hit a full-court--you pulled up from, like, 40, like Steph Curry [?]. And wet. My gosh.Nicaila: It was such a--it was such a good fit, and that's what I try to tell people about sponsorships and pitching anything. Like, you really have to know who you're pitching and what is in it for them. Like, what are you providing? Is your audience a good fit? You have to know your audience too.Zach: You know what? And it's interesting--and I think your marketing background plays a part in this, right? Like, understanding--understanding, like, the mind of your audience and understanding, like, the psychology behind even putting together an effective pitch. And, you know, I've been in Corporate America since 2011, and one thing I've seen is that first-gen corporate professionals, especially black and brown folks, are not the best at really marketing themselves, whether that be, like, to get a promotion or find another job or even to, like, get a side hustle going or get sponsorship and get support for a side hustle. I met folk with genuine passions, and I know, like, part of the TED talk is--[we?] didn't talk about this and all the stuff--in your quick intro, you know what I'm saying, you're still really humble, Nicaila. Like, you didn't talk about the fact that you was on--that you had a TED talk and you [were] talking about multi-passionate professionals and the future of work. But it's okay, I'ma let you make it. But I've met some folks with multiple passions or ideas and aspirations that they've been sitting on for years. Like, they have--like, they have ideas for years. Like, what would advice would you give to folks who don't really know where to start when it comes to amplifying your voice in the working context?Nicaila: First thing I always tell people is you've got to get out your own way, so the first obstacle is your mind and all of the stories we tell ourselves about, "Oh--" And a big thing that holds us back is what we tell ourselves people are going to think, when in actuality none of that matters. Those people--these, like, mystical people that you're making up that are gonna say this or that or these obstacles that are allegedly going to get in your way, let that happen and then deal with it rather than assume it's gonna happen and stop yourself before you even try. So that's #1, get out your way, and #2. Start so ridiculously small. Just by--you can write down everything you think you need to do and then start chipping away at that. So for example with a podcast, I thought about it in 2015. I didn't end up launching until 2016, but that's because I needed to tell myself, "Oh, I'm gonna learn how to do it first." So I spent some time just YouTubing, I spent some time listening to other podcasts to get a feel and doing all that stuff. Like, that was part of my process, but I knew I had an end date in mind, I had a launch date in mind. So start going through the process of launching what it is you want to launch. Invest in experts so that you can learn from the best. I'm not talking about taking endless courses. I'm talking about looking at the top person who you want to replicate and investing--if they have something--investing in learning more from them, whether that be going to a conference that they have, investing in a course that they have, because there's no sense in you, like, sitting around, trying to figure everything out on your own and getting in your own way. So those are my two biggest tips.Zach: That's--man, that's really dope. You know, and it's interesting because I feel like a lot of what you're talking about also comes down to really, like, understanding who you're trying to connect with and building authentic relationships. It's tough though because, like, it feels as if everyone, especially in 2019, is in sales mode on every social media platform, right? I mean, like, no joke. I was on LinkedIn today, and look--you know, Nicaila, I'm a fairly handsome man, okay? My teeth are--my teeth are fine, and yet, like, this dentist hit--a dentist hit me up on LinkedIn talking about "If you need anything, you know, with your dentist needs and you have, you know... use this promo code." I was like, "What?" Why is a dentist pitching me on LinkedIn?Nicaila: I bet you what though. Guess what? Because it's worked for him. I bet you that's why.Zach: I bet, I bet. And I can't knock the hustle. We live in a capitalist society, you know what I'm saying? It's built on the dollar. I get it, you know? Whatever. Different topic for a different day, but with that being said, what does relationship building look like in 2019 when these platforms that were initially built or pitched to us as really, like, relationship building and community building are really being used to kind of always, you know, sell something. And people are fatigued from that, they're wary of that. What does it look like to really build authentic relationships in today's space?Nicaila: Well, you know, I--before I answer that, I do want to say that I don't necessarily think sales is a bad thing. So that's where we can have a dialogue, because I think that's part of the reason why--that stops a lot of us from taking our business from where it needs to go, because we've been taught that sales is a bad word--and don't get me wrong, there are a lot of bad salespeople. There's a lot of practices out there that I'm like, "Come on." For example, when I get a DM that's just, like, selling me. Like, and I don't even know the person. I'm like, "This ain't it. This ain't it."Zach: Yeah.Nicaila: It's like, "This works for you? No, this is not happening." So I know I said the dentist, that might work for him, but honestly most DM pitches are 100% terrible. But at the same time, if you're using your platform to tell people more about your services, like, that's how people are gonna know about it, otherwise no one will discover it. And I've even experienced that with Podcast Moguls, right? You know, because I did a soft launch I wasn't talking about it as much, but when I finally really started to ramp up sharing, sharing, sharing, that's now when I'm beginning to build the level of awareness that I want to get to, because not everyone sees every post. Actually, no one sees every post, so in order to make sure that everyone knows about it you have to continue to talk about what you're doing, and that's what I think of it as - talking. So some people think of sales as pushing and being really aggressive to try to force someone to do something. That's not what I think of it as. I think of explaining to people what you know and leaving--and allowing them to make an informed decision. So that's #1, and #2. I absolutely still think of social media as relationship building. I mean, look at us. I think that--you know, we met via email, right, when you reached out for this podcast, and we continued--even though I couldn't do it at the first moment that you reached out, we continued--you know, [?], might touch base via DM or what have you, and a lot of the people who end up enrolled in any of my programs, whether it's Podcast Moguls or my Master the Gram program, a lot of them follow me on social media, and we have talked multiple times--we've had multiple touch points, and when they're looking and they're ready for an expert to help them with Instagram marketing or launching their podcast, they immediately turn to me and trust me because they know that we have a relationship. It's not just that they saw my ad. Some people it is, but for most people they had some kind of connection with me before they enrolled in my program.Zach: That's real talk, and you know what? Again, I'ma brag for you, 'cause it's--it's funny, because the reason I even connected with you--so I would have likely found you anyway, right, but what accelerated me to connect with you is because there are people in my network, when they knew that I was starting a podcast they were like, "Oh, you need to talk to Nicaila," and so your brand had already established itself enough that I had heard about you in other ways and then kind of--I connected to you through an informal referral.Nicaila: Yeah. [What I'd add?] too about relationship building--so I'm that weird person who, like, I look at Instagram as the same way I would a networking event, and because I'm actually an introvert, because I prefer--I'm a homebody--I prefer social media networking over going to--walking into random rooms where I don't know people. That's just always been my preference, but I'm not a weirdo. Like, I actually--[both laugh] I engage with people's comments. I mean, I will leave a meaningful comment once I start following you. I will--we will have actual, like, meaningful dialogue [?], and so that's how I view relationship building on social media, and then when I have the chance, I do try to connect with people, and I'm doing more of that, especially this year. So there are people who I've talked to on social and Instagram specifically, and I feel like I know them, but I haven't, but then when I go to conferences where I know that, you know, a good amount of these people are gonna be there, that's an awesome moment to kind of cement that relationship. So it started online, and then we make the offline connection, which just helps it to flourish even more.Zach: I love that, and I do appreciate you pushing back and challenging. I do think that it's definitely a space where you can make those connections, and I love the fact that you reinforced that. I think because on my side--and it might be just--you know, that's why I'm in your Podcast Moguls class, and we're about to talk about that in a second, but it might just be because of, like, the level of interaction I get where it's, like, a lot of, just, DM requests about, like, sales-y things, and not necessarily, like, just relational things. So with that being said, let's talk about a little bit more about what you have going on and where people can learn more. I'd like to start with Podcast Moguls because I'm currently in it, and I'm loving it. And then I'd love to talk about the Color Noir app, but I'ma let you wax poetic. You take it where you want to go.Nicaila: Sure. So Podcast Moguls is, you know, one of the major, major things that I have going on, because in 2018 I realized after--speaking of DMs--after years of just, you know--ever since I launched my podcast, after years of just, like, getting DMs, consistent emails, questions, questions, questions about how to do this whole podcast thing and how to grow it to the scale that Side Hustle Pro has grown to, I decided to package my knowledge and actually launch an accelerator program. One was to finally answer everyone's questions in one place, and the second was because when you look at the podcast charts, it is just really lacking in diversity, okay?Zach: It is, it is.Nicaila: And I'm like--I know we have a lot of great things to say and a lot of information, so there's no reason why we shouldn't be up there, but it's not enough to have great content. It's not enough to have valuable content. You have to know the marketing piece, and that's what I realized was my differentiator, my background in marketing. So I started my Podcast Moguls, which is an 8-week accelerator. Essentially I take people through the process of--you can start if you've already launched. So if you've already launched you can go right into working through the [?] steps to scale your podcast, but I also take people through the steps of launching, coming out the gate strong, growing that audience, and then continuing to grow from there. We have weekly coaching calls, so it's really cool because--it's not just a course, it is an opportunity for me to also really learn what people are struggling with so that I can continue to stay on my toes and just refine and refine content and give people information. So it's been a really rewarding experience for me. I think sometimes when we are on this path of entrepreneurship doing very untraditional things--like I said, when I was really exploring blogging I was like, "I don't know where this is gonna lead. This makes no sense. This can't possibly be a job." And I still have those moments where I'm like, "This can't possibly be a job," but I've learned through Podcast Moguls is when I see the results that people are getting, their reactions when they break in the Top 200 charts in their category and break through 10,000, 20,000 and more downloads and land their first sponsor, that has been a light-bulb moment for me to realize, like, "Listen, bloom where you are planted." You never understand exactly why you are doing this thing right now, but keep doing it. One day it will all make sense, because this is benefiting someone. This is providing value. And this is gonna change your lives--just like launching a podcast has changed my life, this is going to change your life. So I really am just so happy that I launched Podcast Moguls, and for anyone out there who's listening and, you know, has an idea for a podcast or started their podcasts and want to take it seriously and not just treat it as a hobby, I definitely recommend you come over to the program. Yeah, I think we do need to pause, because you're in the program and, you know, you can definitely speak to being a podcaster who has a podcast, was doing your own thing, growing on your own and deciding to join.Zach: Yeah. So first of all I love the passion, right? And so, like, I got this app--see, I ain't trying to be just too--just too ridiculous, 'cause I was gonna play, like, these little "ow"--'cause I felt like you was preaching. Like, "Mmm." Like, "[imitating]," you know? I was like, "Golly, she is going off." But yeah, no, no doubt. You're absolutely right. Living Corporate has been around for about a little over a year, and so we're at a point now where I feel like we are--we're definitely continuing to grow, but I want us to get to that next level, and I'm a little impatient, and I also just--there's a lot of things that I know I don't know, and so what I've loved about Podcast Moguls so far is how open it is and how it really does reinforce community through the social media aspect. I love the content. It's just really--it's just really, like, smartly put together. Like, it's very interactive. It's self-paced, which is really important because I'm a manager at a big four consulting firm, so, like, I don't have time in the regular part of my day. I have to kind of, like, carve out time in my weekend to get in--I just love it. I love it. I'm just now really getting into the marketing aspect of it, but what I've already gone through just to, like, the basics and, like, the background, and, like--I'm loving it. I think it's absolutely great, and I definitely--this is not even an ad.Nicaila: That makes me so happy. Right? That's not even an ad.Zach: This is not an ad, y'all. I am not a corporate shill, okay? I am for the people. Yo, I'm still with y'all. I'm still with y'all. Don't play.Nicaila: No, but that makes me so happy, and also I'm really excited for you because I'm a listener of Living Corporate, and like I said, it's all about--Zach: Stop. Stop.Nicaila: No. It's all about this valuable content [needing to get?] in the right areas. Like, you know how many of us struggle with this? So Color Noir, I mean, yeah, I didn't realize how big coloring books was until my husband Muoyo--like, he is--you know, he's the app guy of us, so he has been in the app business for almost ten years, and he kept coming across all of these coloring books. "Coloring books?" And he's like, you know, "I think we should create a coloring book app, but for black people," because as usual, everything that's created is not created with black people in mind. The images, you know? Look at Disney, Disney movies. You talked about Band-Aids in one episode. It's crazy that literally--Zach: We did talk about Band-Aids.Nicaila: Literally everything that's created on Earth was not created for us. So that's a big opportunity, y'all, for those of you out there figuring out what to create, literally look at anything--Zach: [laughs] And make it black.Nicaila: [?] selling it, okay? So, you know, he brought the idea to me. Of course I loved it because I just love seeing myself represented, you know? That's why, as soon as Rihanna launched Fenty, like, I--that's my exclusive makeup line now simply because I love what it represents. So we developed this together, so he worked with the actual developers and, you know, handled the technical side whereas I was all about the look and feel, because I am a user. I am the target customer, so I needed it to be reflective of me. And then one of the smart things that we did, we also created a Facebook group so that as people are using it--when we launched it it was beta, so everyone could use it, give us feedback before we really started marketing it, and so that group gave us really great feedback about skin tones, us needing to add more skin tones, the images, and of course Android, which is coming very soon, so--Zach: Look at y'all. First of all, it's so fire. It's so fire. Like, the designs are so intricate too. These are beautiful stencils.Nicaila: Yeah. So, like, we discuss every image, 'cause it's like, "What is this--" You know, it can't be too complicated that you can't color it, but at the same time we wanted images--eye-catching images that you don't see every day. To quickly share the story, James is one of my App Moguls who joined me over a year ago before the program was even really a program. I always advise people to get to market as quickly, cheaply, and imperfectly as possible, as the real learnings begin when you're live, making adjustments. No one ever listens, and neither did James, haha (neither did I at first), but now he is live and getting those real learnings from the market, and it is a joy seeing him trying many things, adjusting, and truly becoming an entrepreneur. I've already seen him plow through several setbacks on the way to nearly 100 PAYING SUBSCRIBERS who will pay month after month. This will only increase and compound, but he had to actually start and get out there to make it happen. On this episode…. We are discussing How to Start. How do you take the first step in your entrepreneurial venture. First thing to establish is that there are 1,001 ways to do this. Anyone who tells you that there is one path alone is just lying to you. It’s not true! There are many ways to get it done. What I want to share with you is how I’ve done it. What I’ve done right, What I’ve learned, what I could’ve done way better, and I have a feeling this is going to be a more helpful approach for you. Cool? So let’s revisit my origin story which you’ve heard from a couple different angles in episodes 1 & 3… I think episode 3 is particularly relevant to this question, but we are going to go more in depth here on the “start” thing… on the question of START. Our story starts with me working as a “Business Manager” for one of the biggest technology companies in the world. In reality I was mostly managing spreadsheets and managing not to go crazy. Throughout life, I had mostly done all the things we’ve all been told to do… go to school, study hard, get good grades, and that is what I did. For whatever reason after both college and after graduate school, I was rejected from A LOT of jobs that I applied to, before I finally landed this opportunity, and I was making the most money I ever made in my life, the elusive six figures… I could not complain about that. Like a lot of folks in the corporate world, all I wanted to do was do well… dominate in my job, get recognition and promotions, more responsibility, and more money. I didn’t necessarily care about climbing up the ladder (I always had a vision that eventually I would work for me… I didn’t necessarily think it would be that soon), but making money was important to me.   The struggle ended up being that I was working long hours... days, nights, and weekends in a job that I did not enjoy, where I was not learning much on a daily or weekly basis (funny story: when I visited my business school on a couple occasions on recruiting trips, while speaking to the students, I actually realized that my mind was atrophying, and I was getting dumber from lack of using it)... and I was pretty certain from their actions and our interactions, that the people I worked with… the higher ups, did not respect me.   The worst part: I was starting to internalize some of this negativity and negative energy in the atmosphere (if you are in an environment anything like this, make sure to go the extra mile to fortify yourself against it) and had even begun to wonder if I was smart, competent, or capable. I gained a lot of weight and I just was not feeling good about myself overall. I wondered how it was that no matter what I did and how hard I worked, I kept finding my way back to the exact same familiar place… utter & complete failure Then, because things were not going poorly enough, I discovered that I was being demoted or moved into a position that I wasn’t actually trained for or credentialed for, and wouldn’t be able to contribute. It’s kind of like they were just looking for a place to park me because I was not seen as a valuable member of the organization. (I am grateful that they didn’t fire me though while all this was going on, and I was able to collect that check!) I still remember crying quietly to myself in my car driving on Washington Boulevard at nighttime on the way home. And it was around then I made a decision that something had to change. And for any of you who are going through something similar… who are going through a terrible time professionally, and perhaps even personally, I want you to pay attention to this story, and hopefully you can use it to your advantage and it can serve you as well as it has served me. And then you know the story… I was running around frantically… I had massive energy…. Just looking for a way out. Anything else that was legal that I could potentially pursue, whether it was another job or an entrepreneurial opportunity. Negative energy can be powerful fuel. Especially when you feel like you’re out of options. I was looking at everything, and I came across an entrepreneur doing mobile apps. I studied him for a while, and said “hey, I think this could be my thing” I loved that individuals and small teams were succeeding with it and I loved that you could build them one time and benefit many times over… not that there was no work to it… that doesn’t exist, but your work could be magnified. The apps kept on working without getting tired, complaining, or taking breaks, and you could always add more to the team!I decided I was going to build a big app portfolio, so that out of this portfolio, some would be big winners, and overall they would work together to replace my income and free me financially. That’s where I dove in and invested in a book and then 2 different online courses to educate myself. I started with small results, but it was enough to show me more was possible if I kept on pushing. 936 downloads for $81.78. I then knew that my biggest problem was more downloads, so I dove deep on marketing and was able to reach a $1000-$2000 monthly revenue plateau. I wasn't there yet and ran into a number of problems, so I just tried to address them one by one when they arose That December, the momentum started to compound and things really started to take off and the numbers started to make sense financially and I knew I was on my way I was getting more money than I had originally hoped for, I was experiencing the freedom I dreamed of, and I was being looked to for leadership, and having the pleasure of helping a lot of other people with their own journeys… Which is exactly what we’re here to do today. I hope by sharing my story and my experience that I can be helpful to you. And I am still on that journey to this day. Just because you experience success once doesn’t mean that you don’t have to continue earning it or that there are not different levels to unlock, but today we are talking about how to start… or even how to re-start. Maybe you’ve experienced success already and you want to build another thing. I’ve been there… Maybe you’ve experienced a failure or 5… I’ve been there… Maybe a little bit of both... Based on my own experience that we just recapped, here is roughly how I would approach it. Again keep in mind there are many other ways. This is my take: Make a decision that you’re going to start (and that you’re going to finish)I didn’t know how I was going to get from here to there, but I knew for damn sure that I needed to make a change, no matter what it was going to take and no matter how long it would take. In my experience when I approach with that kind of conviction and that level of fervor and determination, I have a much better success rate in getting what I want than if I just go through the motions or “give it a try”And another hack I like to use in combination with this is to make an investment so I have some skin in the game, and I am less likely to forget about the idea and move onFor example, the night in the coffee shop when I came up with Game of Grow, minutes later I was signing up for the social channels and buying the domains. Not as huge an investment in this. You don’t want to give it a try, you want to make a decision about what is going to happen. Slight shift in thinking, but it is powerful Start This might be the biggest thing. Even though I didn’t know what the heck to do in the beginning, I got into action and started trying a lot of different things. A lot of these things were the wrong things for me, but it allowed me to find some of the right things. Had I just stayed in one place and tried to come up with the best plan, it never would have happened. Just start. If you can nail points 1 & 2 you’ll be ahead of the game. What are your interests? Very simply, this is going to be a lot of work over a long period of time if you want to be successful with it. While you don’t necessarily need extreme passion in the thing you are working on, if you don’t enjoy at least some part of it, you are going to struggle to put in the work necessary to excel. Market demand We talked about this in episode 3, so feel free to go back. If we look at things from first principles… if we break it down to the essentials…. To have a business, you need to solve a problem for some set of customers, and in return they compensate you for it. In my app business to this day, I research the top charts and other data sources to determine what people want and how they are spending their money so I can use that data to inform my decisions. No matter what you decide to go into, it can’t JUST be about what you like. You want to be sure that whatever you decide to offer the market, there is demand for it. You can do this by looking at things that are already selling, and/or uncovering problems that you are aware of that could be addressed better, faster, more efficiently… whatever… Something I definitely could have done better earlier was zeroing in on exactly which customers I wanted to serve so I could offer them a series of complementary solutions rather than just moving from opportunity to opportunity. So that may be something you want to think about that will definitely bring value to your business. But don’t let it stop you from starting Establish a base While I know there is power in visualizing where you want to eventually be… (begin with the end in mind. I do love that) I didn’t allow it to paralyze me. What I needed was to replace my income or at least be able to cover my expenses plus some allowable margin of safety. My target became about $300 per day. If I could do that in a reliable fashion, I was in business. And that is pretty much all you need to do from the start. If you can cover your needs and then some in a recurring fashion, it’s going to allow you to go out and take bigger and bigger risks without even needing an investor, and I’ll tell you that you gain a lot of confidence by handling that for yourself, or at least I did. A lot more achievable than if I thought I needed to build Amazon or Facebook on my first try, which is what a lot of people set out to do… and that can be very daunting. Find a MentorAll of the things we talked about above can be expedited if you find someone who has already done what you want to do, already achieved the results you want, and then you walk in their path. I had several mentors for the app business, as I’ve discussed. I paid for their books and their online courses, and I’m glad I did because it saved me a ton of time and allowed me to get to the results I wanted a lot quicker than I would have otherwise. To this day I invest a lot of time and money in my skills and personal development in order to acquire the skills I need to accomplish what I want to accomplish. I also leverage free and inexpensive information… podcasts, books, audiobooks, etc. And sometimes I will be lucky enough to find myself in a position where someone has taken an interest in me and I’ve cultivated a relationship where the mentoring is free of charge. But I don’t count on that and I to this day I don’t have a problem paying to invest in my future if I know there is value there, and most of the people I know who have had some level of success will tell you the same thing. Note that It has to be in the right person for your goal, so definitely do your research before you start signing up for everything left and right and spending money foolishly, and note that it doesn’t absolve you of doing the work or running your own race. So know that as well. But mentorship can be a major shortcut when it comes to this entrepreneurship game. And like I said… I will never claim I have all the answers for you. Keep letting me know what your goals are and what you want to learn. As much as I can, I will do my best to introduce you to accomplished and credible people I know that can help you get start   So that’s about all I have to say today on how to take the first step. I did not leave my job until things were up and running and making significant revenue and you don’t have to either. You can certainly get started on the side as a side hustle and still be effective, in my experience. The movement is STRONG ….but at the same time, at the time of recording, we have about 30...34 reviews live, so a lot of you guys should not be patting yourselves on the back that much. I am working extremely hard to bring you a great product for free… and I really really believe in it. Today’s Topic So without further ado... And I had a completely different topic planned for you today, but while I was in the gym this morning (where I start my day most mornings) and this really hit me hard (while I was struggling through my final sets… didn’t get enough rest last night… it’s important) and I knew I needed to share it Today, we’re going to talk about why you don’t need a Grammy, and how this knowledge… how this concept can improve your business and your life. Let me tell you a quick story… You might have heard there was an event a week or so ago called the Academy Awards, aka the Oscars, and not too long before that was the Grammys… or vice versa, who knows? Now I don’t typically watch any of these shows because it’s just not my thing… I don’t get much enjoyment or entertainment out of it, I don’t care who is wearing what, it doesn’t affect my life or move move me towards any one of my goals, so for me it’s a waste of time (btw, I am not saying that YOU shouldn’t watch them. There is nothing inherently wrong… and I am not going to lie, I do get excited when I hear that one of my people won, that somebody I support won, just because I know it’s a big moment for them) But there is also another reason besides entertainment value that I thumb my nose at the award shows. As a kid, I did watch some of these shows, and after a while they all started to seem to me like some old, out of touch dudes in a room deciding which art was the best based on their taste, and their taste alone, no matter what anyone else thought or was going on in the real world. Seems like a crappy position to be in as an artist. Spend countless hours year after year of your life working on and honing your craft, only to have the decision of whether you are “worthy” come down to the opinion of some random dudes. And I really started to think to myself how often are we put in that position, or how often do we ALLOW ourselves to be put in that position in everyday life? Let me explain... Enter Drake... The day after the Grammys, I learned that Toronto’s own Drizzy Drake had said something I agree with, so here it is: "I want to let yall know that we're playing in an opinion-based sport, not a factual based sport. This is a business where sometimes it's up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed raced kid from Canada has to say, or a fly Spanish girl from New York, or a fly brother from Houston." "If you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you're a hero in your hometown, if there's people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain and the snow, spending hard earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don't need this right here," (talking about his Grammy) "You already won." ...and that’s when the Grammy’s cut him off and cut to commercial Funny, right… but this is a business & entrepreneurial podcast. This is a personal development podcast. This is a podcast for ambitious people. Why on earth are we discussing the Grammys? I’ll tell you why… How often in our work or in our businesses, projects, side hustles (shoutout to the Side Hustle Pro podcast and my illustrious wife). How often in our work, in our businesses, projects, side hustles, or even in life do we get critical feedback or opinions from others on the outside looking in which hurts our feelings, or makes us feel less. We get upset, we get down, we get frustrated...  And then we want to spend all of this time trying to prove to this person (who usually is not even our customer by the way) that we are indeed smart, right, worthy, whatever… Sometimes we’ll even go into a funk. It’s all very much just like the Grammys. I want to encourage you not to do that, because you don’t need a Grammy to be validated. And I could stop right there and call it a day, but I want to give you a few more points to flesh this out. Feel free to take a pen and a pad and jot down some notes if you like Advice vs Counsel Anyone in the world can offer you can opinion or give advice, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with hearing them out. This is a good thing, mostly. But not everyone can give counsel. Counsel is wisdom backed by experience, which can only come from doing the thing. So when you get the piece of criticism or feedback from Person A, consider what qualifies them to give this advice, and whether they have done the thing that you are trying to do at a high level. Is it advice, or is it counsel? And I am not saying you can never gain wisdom from people not in your profession, but just make sure you’re taking that advice with a grain of salt and giving it the proper weight. A quick shortcut I like to use. Ask yourself… Would you trade places with the person giving you the advice? And then act accordingly. If the panel handing out the Grammys or the Oscars or whatever have not done what I want to do…. if they are not playing in the same game I am playing… why would I care one bit about their award or any criticism they had about me? You don’t need a Grammy. Do things that move you towards your goals My mentor in my head, Tom Bilyeu (his podcast Impact Theory is definitely worth listening to) has a saying which he says often… “Do and believe that which moves you towards your goals” and on the flipside “Do not do or believe that which moves you away from your goals” I liked this concept so much I included it in the App Mogul Mindset, which is a set of beliefs I share with all my App Moguls students. There’s a printable PDF, a copy you can use for your phone, an editable copy, and some other fun stuff: appmagic.co/imamogul Invest in those who invest in you As humans, we all have a tendency to overfocus on the negative things that happen in our lives, our businesses, etc… even if there are a lot of positive things. I think this has to do with survival, with biology, etc. But this does not always serve us. There are probably a lot of people, or at least some people who enjoy your work and what you do. In most cases it’s going to be a better use of your time and energy to try to serve them at the highest level rather than trying to pander to some out of touch guys in a back room smoking cigars who don’t quite get it. You don’t need a Grammy. Nobody owes you shit While it would be amazing if everyone were universally nice, respectful, professional, and sufficiently aware of your abilities and awesomeness, the fact is that will never happen, and you don’t have any control over it. Even though all those things would be nice, you can’t expect them. Nobody owes you a damn thing and it does not serve you to allow their actions, even if they are rude, dismissive, uncalled for, whatever… to throw you off your game. Even if you are “in the right”, you are not serving your own interests and the things you want to accomplish by wasting time on people whose opinions frankly do not matter. As the great Tywin Lannister once said “A lion does not concern himself with the opinion of sheep” Especially if you are an entrepreneur or want to be an entrepreneur… but this really applies to anyone. You are 100% responsible for your life, your results, and where you are right now. People are going to do what they do and say what they say. Sometimes it will be mean, sometimes it will be hurtful, sometimes it will be dismissive. But you have to do your thing regardless… or at least you should. You don’t need their approval and you don’t need a Grammy. Use it, no matter what If they are right, use it to get better. If they praise you, feed off the positive energy. If they are wrong/spiteful/trying to hurt, use it as fuel. Negative critiques and negativity in general… or those that you perceive as negative (because sometimes that is not the intent) can be some of the most amazing fuel. Highly underrated. During his playing days, Michael Jordan would make up stories in his mind about how opposing players had wronged him, slighted him, or talked about his mama just so he could get fired up and perform at a higher level. Many other elite athletes do the same. I can remember so many instances in my life and career in which I’ve leveraged this kind of thinking. I still remember sitting in the office that cold January morning with my "assigned mentor", who I probably spoke to once a quarter if I was lucky... "It happens to us all, Muoyo. You think I haven't been passed over for promotions or treated unfairly? It's just something you have to learn to deal with", he advised... In that moment, at the very same time I nodded my head in agreement slowly, I realized that I could not agree less I thought to myself "Maybe YOU do, but that's not what I have in mind", and I made a decision. I said F this shit. Let’s GO. And I did. You don’t need a Grammy. Let the fact that they are rejecting you drive you to greater heights. And I could go into another example, and another one, and ANOTHER ONE… but let’s save some ammo for a future show. Why not, right? Alright… I want to bring this thing to a close by sharing with you one of my favorite quotes, from Theodore Roosevelt. I think you’ll see why in a minute. Welcome to the very first episode of the Game of Grow! I’m your host, Muoyo Okome. On this episode I will be sharing my vision for the show and how it came about, and also sharing a bit about my story, so we can get to know each other. Those messages are coming directly to me and you can also connect with me on social media… all the handles are listed right there So, without further ado… here’s how the show was born: Origin of the Show One recent night in the coffee shop, after a long day of work, I found myself asking myself some hard questions, like... “What if I placed the demand that any business I build leave every person that interacts with it better off? What would that look like?” “How could I make it successful & impactful at a scale I have not yet reached before?” “How would I need to change & who would I need to become to make all of that possible?” “How can I share the process with other people with similar goals?”⠀ Out of those questions comes my new podcast & project "Game of Grow", in which I will document my journey as an entrepreneur. Why the name? Well… it’s kind of a play on "Game of Thrones", which is obviously dope. Plus, I love the Game of Entrepreneurship, the journey of growth and development that comes with it, the growth mindset needed to succeed, and all of that good stuff. So that’s how it happened. If you are trying to start a business, grow a business, or simply level up in ways you have not before, this is for you... It doesn’t matter where you start or where you are. A big part of this game that goes highly underrated, because everyone is overly worried about popularity (including myself sometimes, sad to say)... is skill acquisition. It’s about acquiring the skills you need for where you want to be. It’s about if you’re willing to grow...⠀ By the way, this is not about me being the “expert” on everything. I am a student of the game just like you. I won’t pretend I have all the answers. My goal is to transparently document and share the highs, lows, and lessons of my journey and bring as much value as I possibly can, hopefully producing one of the most valuable pieces of content you listen to each week. In return, I get a ton of public accountability to help me move forward with my goals and I’ll be able to have an authentic conversation with you. I still love the App Game and will continue to talk about, teach, and execute against that (shoutout to my App Moguls making me proud). However, I realized I also needed a more inclusive platform where I could help more people, and let them get to know me... (a realization that recently punched me in the face when someone told me they bought my app course just so we could talk business. Shout out to you, my friend. If that's not a signal...) I want to deliver it raw & real in a live format by leveraging platforms like FB Live, IG Live, republishing everywhere I can, and if and only if you’ve derived value…. counting on my community to help bring others in, one by one. You’ll have the opportunity to ask me anything, and perhaps even a live consulting call here and there. We will experiment... Expect that the show will often be unpolished, because it's happening in real time, and my focus is on the content over the production, but at the same time very real, valuable, and actionable. What on earth is that about??) I’ve worked my way through all the content and exercises, and it was extremely helpful. Now it is time to stop stalling and share with the world…. My Story So now let’s get into my story. First of all, I’m from Brooklyn, NY and grew up in a Nigerian household with 2 Naija parents. I attended public school all the way from Kindergarten thru 12th grade (shoutout to Mom & Dad for getting me into the gifted program… I have the most supportive parents ever). I’m married… coming up on 2 years now, to my beautiful wife Nicaila Matthews Okome, who is actually pretty well known for her podcast Side Hustle Pro, which consistently ranks among the top 100 or 200 business podcasts in the world. Super proud of her. Shoutout to wifey... And if and only if you are getting value of any sort. If you care at all…  I need you to pause right now and subscribe to the podcast and leave me a rating & review. I want to be able to show my face around here. I did the "right things” all my life, went to school, studied hard, got good grades, went to great schools, was rejected by an endless number of companies I applied for (this happened after college, and again after grad school) and ended up stuck in a corporate job where I was not respected. I wanted to be able to earn money and support myself and start building a promising and lucrative career as a technology executive I was working days, nights, and weekends in a job that I did not enjoy, where the people did not respect me Worse than that I was starting to internalize the beliefs being expressed towards me and had even begun to wonder if I was smart, competent, or capable. I gained a lot of weight and generally felt miserable most of the time. I was demoted to an even lower position which I was not actually qualified for or credentialed for and often found myself at home without a role where I could contribute meaningfully to the team. I had recently attended an online workshop from a surfer looking dude who would soon become my first app mentor He discussed one of his apps making about $10,000 per month, which broke down to $120,000 per year, or $333 per day, Meaning this one app was making more than my full-time salary by itself. Did I mention he was not at all technical? But what was even more interesting is that he had another app making $3,000 per month, a new one making $800, two more making $5,000 each, and the list went on from there. At the time he had at least 12 different apps, all making modest but consistent profit. But the craziest part was that unlike me, he did not have to show up to the office each day. Nor did he code them himself. He did some research up front, created them for small amounts of money, and then got paid for them over and over again. That’s when I realized I didn’t want be paid for my time like I was doing…. I wanted to create apps like this guy. And so that’s what I did... You can imagine my excitement when I first made $30 in a day Given my $300 per day salary, this equated to a 10% raise.... and I wasn't working any harder (ask me when I got a 10% raise overnight at work) And then $100, and then $400, and eventually much more. I had an epiphany: my apps kept on working without getting tired, complaining, or taking breaks, and I could always add more to the team! I could give myself a new raise whenever I wanted by doing the research and creating a new well-positioned app. My plan was to start building up a portfolio of multiple apps that together could pay for my lifestyle and my freedom. I dove in and invested a bunch of money in a book and 2 different online courses to educate myself. It was by no means smooth sailing. My first month I achieved only 900 downloads and brought in about 80 bucks. The next few months I was able to build up to $1000-$2000 in monthly revenue by focusing more on the marketing, but it was still a tough journey. Not every app worked out. I sometimes hired programmers who did not deliver, and Apple would even change the algorithm on me, cutting my daily revenue in half… twice! Six months in, my work started to compound and I finally broke through. 3 apps that I launched took off, and that month I would earn twice as much from my app business as I did from my six-figure corporate job. I even got an improbable 7-figure offer on my company, which I eventually turned down to bet on myself even more. While the money was great, this experience gave me a taste of freedom, as well as the unflappable confidence that I could really cut it and take care of myself, and no one would ever control me again. And while it started out being all about me and being able to take care of some bills, my mission grew into something much greater that I never expected. unexpectedly I became a leader and someone that people consistently turn to for advice, and it’s been one of the greatest pleasures of my life to help thousands of entrepreneurs on their own journeys Btw, that app business grew to over 12 million downloads and I sold it for a very nice chunk of change. Since then I’ve had other businesses and projects, but if we’re being honest, I have not yet reached the levels of impact and success I have in mind. But that’s alright, it’s a journey, and that’s what this show is all about The Game of Grow This is not your typical entrepreneurship podcast. I’ve been an entrepreneur for years now, and had my fair share of successes as well as failures. A lot of people ask me for advice, and I figured rather than tell you, I want to show you the whole process. You’ll see when I get it right, when I fall on my face (it happens more than you think… that’s how we grow), what I learn, and everything that happens along the way. I don’t want to show you the result. I want you to see the journey. It’s not about where you start. It’s about where you want to go, who you want to become and the price you’re willing to pay to get there.. Because you’re going to need to put in the work and develop those skills. According to Pastor Darryl Dash, margin is “a little reserve that you’re not using up. You’re not stretched to the limit. You’re not going from one meeting to the next with no space between. Margin is the space between my load and my limit.” 1:57 - The only reason I know about margin because we had a sermon at The Journey Church about restoring balance and allowing God to restore balance. The concept of margin came up. 2:16 - It struck a nerve because I acknowledge that I, like most of us, am on overload. 2:20 - Let’s break down margins, think a piece of paper. The standard 1” margin would be setting a margin around your life, saying “Everything outside of this isn’t available.” 2:40 - Sometimes I live on the 0.2” margin, and I'll let procrastination/ anxiety stop me. 3:06 - When it comes to restoring margin, I get a little excited. To that end, I'll be sharing the ways I've been trying to restore margin to my own life, and a few of the podcasts that have been with me along the way. I’m gonna chat about it with a few podcasts I've been enjoying and have been crucial in helping me notice patterns when I Don't have margin, and make those non-negotiable. 3:36 - Nobody has to tell you how busy you are. We have the lists--we know the XYZ, and somewhere we’re supposed to fit in the ‘YOU’. 3:48 - Margin is basically breathing room. The sermon spoke to me, and I realized I was running on my own steam instead of the Lord’s, and I wasn’t focusing where I was supposed to focus. 4:07 - For me, that meant instead of focusing on one aspect of a project, I’m weighing all 10 aspects equally at the same time and weight, which means I'm waffling and moaning about the idea of doing instead of getting down to it. 4:30 - One of the 2 places I've started creating margin is when it comes to taking care of myself. I find margin in my life when I Devote time to caring for myself. 4:42 - I've mentioned before on this podcast that when my anxiety is in full swing, the first thing I Attack is my body. Here I Am, i’d fall asleep after a day of work, evening of volunteering, and i’d forget to brush my teeth, fall asleep with the lights on, wake up in the middle of the night to do what I should've done hours ago, because I Didn't have margin in my life for taking care of myself. 5:15 - “The Naked Beauty” podcast  really got through to me. It’s a podcast hosted by Brooke DeVard, and it’s “an unfiltered talk about beauty trends, tips and products” hosted by Brooke Devard. What Takeaway is that the bare minimum is not allowed. 5:40 - what I've learned from podcast is that when things go wrong, we can’t make ourselves optional. But finding margin and making myself not an option but a requirement--for me, that means setting a timer, 20 minutes Ican take care of everything skincare and oral hygiene. Setting that timer and making it a non-negotiable has helped me to restore margin and take care of myself. Here’s a link to the podcast. I can give that to myself at least every day. Building that margin in and making it a non-negotiable has helped me restore a sense of balance to my own life. 6:40 - The other way I've restored margin is by giving myself a little bit of a break on my calendar. Does this sound like you? 6:50 - you have a regular commitment then there are the one-off engagements, and a host of appointments. And your life admin. Maybe you only have 3 prime hours in the evening and morning around a work or school schedule. So when my schedule’s out of whack and I'm too busy to recharge let alone do the work I'm supposed to do, I realize there’s a cliff for me. I find myself beyond my margin, limit and load when I'm not impeccable with my word. 7:35 - The “Side Hustle Pro” podcast episode hosted by Nicaila Matthews Okome featuring Charreah Jackson got me thinking about being impeccable with my word. “Side Hustle Pro” is a podcast that helps creative entrepreneurs grow their passions into money makers. Listening to the most recent episode featuring Charreah Jackson hustle pro restores the reality that we control our time and we control the projects we want to give energy to. Choosing one over the other doesn't mean you can’t accomplish both. It’s just a decision about where you choose to put your energy. 8:25 - What I love about the conversation featuring “Boss Bride” author Charreah Jackson is that it reminded me of the old adage Ilove--you can do everything, just not at the same time. Charreah understand sand has devoted her time to helping people understand what they can do, so they can do something else. I can’t wait to read Charreah’s book! 8:52 9 - those are the two ways I'm restoring margin: Establishing it taking care of myself, and in my calendar. Establishing these margins now while we still have 202 days left is so important to me. I feel like I've feel what it feels like to live outside of these margins, what it feels like to NOT make time for myself, so we’re not always going past our margins and loads. 9:50 - I've had a good time recording this episode.
