In today's episode John takes us on a whirlwind tour from the first sharks to a beast who had "Jaws and teeth that were giant wheels of death" - the Helicopron. Join us to unpack just how sharks evolved into one of the most successful lineages in Earth's history - it's an adventure through 400 million years of evolution, extinction, and dominance in the prehistoric seas.Welcome to our week of Sharks!MORETyrannosaurus Rexhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/3uxH3HHjSuEk0mHmjFU9k7The First Dogshttps://open.spotify.com/episode/6fpF68aiJUIbMv6AzXxfC6Presented by Tristan Hughes. In this episode we're opening our mailbag to answer three fascinating questions from our listeners. How did “ass,” a word for donkeys and butts, become what linguists call an “intensifier” for just about everything? How do pharmaceuticals get their wacky names? And why do we all seem to think that aliens from outer space would travel to Earth just to kidnap our cows? In this episode, you'll hear from linguistics professor Nicole Holliday, historians Greg Eghigian and Mike Goleman, and professional “namer” Laurel Sutton. It's been over three months since President Trump announced very big across-the-board tariffs on imports from nearly every territory on Earth–including uninhabited islands. It's a move he said would revitalize the U.S. economy.Since that splashy White House announcement, the tariff rates have been a wildly moving target. Ratcheted up - then back down - on China, specifically.Overlaid with global product-specific tariffs on categories like automobiles and copper. Partially paused after the stock market tanked.Through it all, the tariff rate has remained at or well-above 10 percent on nearly every good imported to the U.S. And if you've listened to NPR's reporting since April, you'll have heard many voices make one particular prediction over and over again – that American consumers will pay the price. If American consumers are going to pay for the tariffs, the question is: when ? Brian Cox and Robin Ince blast off into a cosmic controversy as they ask, should humanity become an interplanetary species? At Harwell Campus, a space science innovation hub, they're joined by astronaut Tim Peake, biologist and Royal Society prize winning author Kelly Weinersmith, and comedian Alan Davies to explore the science, ethics, and challenges of settling on Mars or on the Moon. Are we bold pioneers venturing into the unknown, or just reckless tenants abandoning Earth in search of a new abode? Our panel discuss whether space settlement is inevitable in humanity's near future and how pushing the boundaries of space exploration could make extra-terrestrial travel more accessible to the masses. From sourcing materials, to surviving radiation, and even growing potatoes from poo, they tackle what it really would take to live a life beyond Earth!Series Producer: Melanie Brown Assistant Producer: Olivia Jani Executive Producer: Alexandra FeachemBBC Studios Audio Production

What would it look like to live a life guided by pleasure, rooted in connection, and in service to the Earth? In this episode of Moonbeaming, Sarah Faith Gottesdiener is joined by artist, activist, and mystic Samantha Roddick to explore the sacred nature of sex, eroticism, and embodiment—and how reconnecting to our life force can help us live more fully, more freely, and more in alignment with our true values.Together, Sarah and Sam dive into the archetype of the Nine of Pentacles, examining how real abundance is built through intimacy, integrity, and interdependence. Sam shares her path from reshaping erotic culture through her London-based store Coco de Mer, to supporting Indigenous-led resistance movements in Brazil. Spread across the Earth's oceans, the Chinese distant-water fishing fleet is the single largest armada in human history. This three-part series is an unprecedented investigation into their secretive fishing practices. The fleet is so gargantuan that even the Chinese government can't account for all its vessels. We do know it has hauled in more than 35 billion dollars worth of catch per year and has sold it across the globe — and yet, almost nothing was known about its practices. That is, until The Outlaw Ocean team started asking questions, and eventually managed to climb aboard a dozen Chinese vessels to investigate.Episode highlights: Nowhere is more difficult to report than China, and seafood is an unusually tough product to investigate. Host Ian Urbina explains the various reporting methods his team needed to employ over the course of four years to track how seafood gets from bait to plate.Right at the heart of this secretive supply chain, the team finds forced Uyghur labour, with the cascading effects of family separation, relocation and a plummeting birth rate. The international community has scrutinized China's human rights abuses against this predominantly Muslim ethnic minority, and specific laws were set up to protect them from exploitation – but the Uyghur people's role in seafood production was totally off the radar. In total, we identified forced Uyghur labour tied to seafood imported to more than twenty countries, including the U.S. and Canada. Urbina reflects on the many costs hidden along this complex supply chain, and the larger question: how have we allowed the seafood we eat to be so thoroughly co-mingled with environmental and human rights abuses? What is the true cost of the low prices we see on our seafood? And who's really paying for it?

Michael Savage shares an article he wrote for the Sierra Club Bulletin in 1981 about the need for a long term approach to conservation. He explains his decades-long stance and how conservation is a core tenet of conservatism. He criticizes the shortsighted rightwing for their exploitation of nature for short term economic gains at the expense of future generations. Savage then shares personal anecdotes about mortality and life. He recounts a haunting fortune a palm reader once told him about his fate. He concludes by encouraging listeners to never sacrifice the long term for what is readily expedient.

This summer, we're sharing a series of audio practices—each inviting you into an experience of Earth time. This episode orients you towards one of the simplest practices you can do to shift your sense of time: walking. Follow the metronomic rhythm of your feet—down a bustling street or through a secluded woodland—and learn how moving at your most natural pace allows you to form relationships with what surrounds you. Receptive to the present moment, open to a simultaneous experience of deep inwardness and profound outer attentiveness, and step into the expanse of the timeless. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. We all seem to chase balance. Not too much and not too little. The middle tends to be more populated in the middle of the bell curve or the early adopters curve. The extremes tend to have more risk but they also tend to be the areas of maximal growth potential. The middle grounders are often those that play it safe. When it comes to health, it is the moderation goal. When it comes to exercise, it is the just enough goal. However, most people are worried about "not enough of". Most lifestyle diseases occur with "too much of" The potential for learning is also greatest at both ends of the curve. Today's podcast is the potential benefit of not too much and how one might determine if you suffer from too much or too little potentials. I hope you enjoy the listen. Thanks for listening. If you ever find yourself floating above the clouds of Saturn, gazing upon the planet’s magnificent rings, you might feel like you need to get your eyes checked. Even at noon, when the Sun is highest in the sky, the view will look as dim as the minutes before sunrise or after sunset here on Earth. That’s because Saturn is almost 10 times farther from the Sun than Earth is. At that distance, the Sun shines only about one percent as bright as it does on Earth. And that presents some problems for spacecraft that travel to Saturn. For one thing, they can’t use solar power. They’d need huge arrays of solar cells, which would make a craft far too heavy and expensive. Instead, Saturn-bound missions are nuclear powered. For another, it’s hard to take good pictures. A craft has to leave the shutter open for a long time to properly expose an image. At the speeds a craft is moving, that blurs the shot. The solution is to turn either the camera or the entire spacecraft to stay focused on the target. No spacecraft are operating at Saturn now. The next one is scheduled for launch in a few years. It’ll ferry a small helicopter to Saturn’s big moon Titan – under the faint light of the distant Sun. Saturn appears near our own Moon early tomorrow. It looks like a bright star, standing just below the Moon at dawn. The planet fades from view as the sky brightens – under the full glory of the nearby Sun. Script by Damond Benningfield
There can't be many people in the world who've saved lives in hospital emergency rooms and also helped care for the wellbeing of astronauts in space – but Kevin Fong's career has followed a singular path: from astrophysics and trauma medicine, to working with NASA, to becoming an Air Ambulance doctor.Kevin is a consultant anaesthetist and professor of public engagement and innovation at University College London. He's worked on the front line in hospitals, dealing with major incidents and helping shape policy; but he's also stayed true to his childhood passion for space, working on multiple projects with NASA and even going through the astronaut application process himself. As if that wasn't enough, he's also become a well-known figure in science broadcasting through his various radio and TV shows.Speaking to Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Kevin admits it hasn't always been an easy path – but his passion for both space and medicine have got him through. And today, he's channelling his energies into ensuring we protect the NHS's most precious commodity: its staff.Presented by Jim Al-Khalili Produced by Lucy TaylorThis programme was a BBC Studios Audio prouction for Radio 4.

The first images of Mars found their way back to Earth from NASA's Mariner 4 mission on 15th July, 1965 - and were simultaneously revelatory and disappointing. Delivered as binary code, rendered in black and white, and revealing only 1% of the planet, the photos were coloured in by hand and showed no evidence of life. But they played a significant part in the scientific understanding of the Red Planet for years to come. In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca compare the computing power of the 1960s with ‘lame' Victorian telescopes; reveal the surprisingly recent date that the first ever colour image of Mars was committed to camera; and explain how a mis-translation from Italian lead H.G. Wells to think there may be Martian waterways... "Third time's the charm" is a saying that suggests perhaps the third attempt will be more successful than the two prior failures. By no means has the past two versions of Test Track been failures. But it seems like this is a huge opportunity to learn from the previous experiences and truly come up with something that could be loved for years to come. We chart out not only all three, but also talk about its forefather, The World of Motion. On our journey I pick up my friend and colleague Nick Grande, to talk about our experience testing Test Track, where it works, where it doesn't and where it retreads. Great news! There is much to love about this new version. And while we've seen people either completely love or hate it, we'll give you a complete sense of how you can get both responses. It came from beneath the ice!! Yes, sounds like the start of a 50s b-movie where some alien plant pod falls to Earth in the distant past only to be discovered by mankind and have it germinate and try to take over the world. It probably would have some sort of villain who hates mankind so much, he identifies more with the plants than with humans. Gosh, that also sounds exactly like our episode this week!
When Asteroid hunters discover a new object it is given a score ranging from 0 which means it is likely to be a distant main belt asteroid up to 100 which means that it is likely to come near to us. Each newly discovered asteroid which receives a score of 65 or greater is posted on the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object Confirmation Page so that telescopes around the world can track it to estimate it's size as well as to refine our knowledge of it's orbit around the Sun. NASA feeds data on each new discovery into its Scout software system. Scout is designed to identify those objects which are most likely to make a close approach to Earth in the very near future. It's alert allows astronomers to access the new object's risk of impact as well as to study it before it fades into the distance. Fortunately, asteroid hunters have not found any dangerous impacting asteroids, however, Scout's rapid alert has enabled astronomers to measure the size, chemical composition, and rate of rotation for a number of close approaching asteroids. These data are extremely important to plan an effective response should an object be found to be on a collision course with planet Earth. For the vast majority of Earth approaching objects that asteroid hunters discover, additional observations make it less and less likely that an object will impact or even make a very close to approach to our home planet. Those few space rocks which have a tiny remote chance of coming very near to us are passed into NASA Sentry system which makes and keeps astronomers aware of nearby objects so that we do not lose track of them.
This week on Black & Published, Nikesha speaks with Nikkolas Smith about his new picture book The History of We. It's a book he says shows the lineage for every human on Earth beginning with Black people in Africa. In our conversation, Nikkolas discusses why he's grateful for the winding path that led him to his full time role as an illustrator. Plus the Jim Crow era story that was one inspiration point for the book. And the viral piece he created for the 2016 summer games as a tribute to Simone Biles that led to his first book deal and current career. (image source: https://dinopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Rhizodus) Host Matthew Donald and guest co-host Lawrence Mack discuss Rhizodus, the largest ever freshwater fish that had so much rizz it lived for 30 million whole years. Rhizodus-dizz, thanks for all the rizz! From the Early Carboniferous, this 20-foot sarcopterygian was actually more closely related to us humans than other fish, although it wasn't necessarily a direct ancestor, just related. I will personally leave no descendants, so the birthing line from LUCA to me ends with me. Four billion years, and it stops here. You're welcome, Earth. Want to further support the show? Eric knows that taking three weeks off each year is a European concept, yet he believes that it is up to each entrepreneur to decide for themselves when and how they choose to switch off. In this episode, he explains that it is not just about the time you take off, but rather about being intentional with how you recharge. He also shares the playful out-of-office email message he set up during the three weeks he recently spent in North Carolina. Decide How You Disconnect As an entrepreneur, you get to choose how and when you disconnect. Some people prefer complete time off, while others are okay with handling a few urgent tasks here and there. What matters is being intentional about taking breaks and allowing yourself the time to recharge and connect with your loved ones. No Need to Wait for Holidays Without regular rest, your creativity, focus, and overall effectiveness will gradually decline. However, there is no need to wait for holidays to recharge. Skipping work on Saturdays, setting aside time to meditate, and taking short breaks during the week can help you stay focused and energized. You Are Not Always Needed With the right systems and support in place, your constant presence is not necessary as an entrepreneur. You may feel you need to stay connected initially, but over time, you will see that taking a step back does not mean that everything falls apart. It is also essential to understand that if a client cannot respect the time you take off, they may not be the right client for you. Protect Your Time Make a habit of scheduling time for yourself each day and week, and switch off completely during holidays. Spending time with the people you care about and doing the things that energize you while giving your mind a break from business concerns is the best way to recharge. Out-of-Office Message During his recent time off, Eric set up a creative and funny out-of-office email response. In it, he explained that he was away, offered a contact for urgent matters, and encouraged senders to imagine where he might be. The message reflected his personality while setting clear boundaries, showing that it is possible to unplug without being dull or overly formal. In this episode, we get to meet The Swell Season. Comprised of singers, songwriters, musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, you may know them best as the leads of the John Carney film Once, back from 2007, which won an Oscar for its immortal "Falling Slowly". And while we do touch upon the film in this conversation - including its legacy, the shocks of that time, and why they don't get tired of speaking about it, even nearly 20 years on - we focus first and foremost on their brand new album, Forward, which is out now. We talk about the production, songwriting, and performance of the album, the dynamics of it, but also what led to them reconnecting after so many years away from being in the studio as a duo. It's a lovely chat, with a talented pair of people I've been watching since 2007, so I was happy to connect. Thank you for listening.

As he stumbles through job centres, detention cells, and diplomatic summits, his mission to stop the world from destroying itself becomes increasingly farcical.
