In this solo episode, I wanted to share some real talk. Context matters. Whether talking about health, science, or the people we follow for guidance, it's easy to get swept up in headlines, credentials, or even a few well-spoken soundbites. But beneath the surface, we have to ask better questions. Who's funding the research? What patterns show up over time in someone's stance? What are the biases and motives? I share some tools I personally use when evaluating health info (or really, anything): assessing character, noticing patterns over time, and sometimes, simply trusting my gut. My hope is that this episode empowers you to be both curious and cautious, confident yet open-minded, and above all, grounded in your own values as you navigate your health journey.IntroContext matters with Dr. Peter McculloughCritical thinking matters (don't blindly follow)Beyond the headlinesLongevity of a person's stanceCharacter and motiveBias in the sourcePhone a friendTrust your gutSome of my 23.5 hours in a day Bonus: "Vitamin A, baaaaad"_____EPISODE RESOURCES1) Germ vs. Terrain Theory: here, here, and here.2) Dr. Peter McCullough's Pharma Payments3) Dr. Peter McCullough's Interview4) Tuft's Compass Guide Article_____WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Ever wonder how simply eating steak (yes, just steak) could boost your energy, reduce inflammation, and strip off stubborn weight you've carried for years? That's exactly what Dan Sullivan and I are discussing in this special mini-episode on the Carnivore Diet. We're talking “all meat, all the time,” how we navigate restaurants and travel, the surprising drop in food cravings, and the best ways to monitor your health so you know exactly what's happening in your body. Plus, I'll share why I originally decided to go carnivore after battling colorectal cancer—and how it helped clear my IBS issues for good.If you're curious about a diet that strips away the nonsense and might radically improve your blood markers, this is a must-listen. Remember, we're not doctors—just two guys seeing remarkable results.KEY INSIGHTS & TAKEAWAYSCravings DisappearDan noticed that while his meal choices weren't necessarily the problem, the real weight culprit was all the snacks between meals. Carnivore crushed those cravings almost instantly.Rapid Weight Loss & Inflammation ReductionDan went from 203 to 183 in about six months, and I dropped from 185–190 down to 167 in ten months. Bonus: visible abs, less puffy face, more muscle definition.Energy & Clarity SkyrocketSurprise: no “meal crashes,” no nap cravings. My mental acuity soared. Dan's focus remains sharp and consistent, all day.An “Elimination Diet” for Gut HealthI used carnivore to address ongoing IBS issues post-cancer. By cutting out everything but meat, I zeroed in on triggers, which turned out to be a game-changer for my digestion.A Simple Routine: Steak & WaterMy daily go-to is a New York strip in the morning, possibly another at lunchtime, and sometimes a final cut later in the day—salt, pepper, maybe a little butter. Dan just logs his weight daily and keeps it simple.Travel Hacks & Blood MonitoringIt's surprisingly easy on the road (hello, Brazilian steakhouses!). We both get regular lab work and check with our docs. Surprisingly, many markers (including cholesterol) improve.Question the Old Food PyramidConventional food guidelines? Often the result of corporate interests. Always do your own research, test with labs, and trust how you feel above all else.TIME STAMPS[00:00:00] The Carnivore Backstory: Dan's 6-month journey, losing 20+ pounds, and the role Dean Jackson & JJ Virgin played in getting him started.[00:02:57] Cutting Out Cravings: Realizing the biggest weight culprit was snacking between meals, and how pure protein intake solved it.[00:05:10] Mike's 10-Month Experiment: My IBS, post-cancer rationale for going carnivore and how my steady “steak & water” routine obliterated my gut issues.[00:06:40] Practical Travel Tips: How to manage flights, hotels, and social dinners without falling off the carnivore wagon (butter, grills, and friendly hosts).[00:09:37] Bloodwork & Energy Levels: Dan's regular labs look great, I've seen improved cholesterol and mental stamina. Turns out no naps required.[00:10:38] That Food Pyramid Myth: Why government-backed dietary guidelines can be questionable—and why we rely on data from continuous glucose monitors and quarterly blood panels. If you've ever struggled with stubborn weight, nagging gut issues, or endless sugar cravings, the Carnivore Diet might be worth a closer look. Do your homework, talk to a professional, then see how you feel when you sizzle up that next steak.Additional ResourcesDownload your FREE digital and/or audio version of my bestselling book, “Your Next Act!”Book your $1k Cup of Coffee with me (Mike) here. Vision Driven Health - Bible Verses, Healthy Food, Weight Loss
Hey Friend, Now is the time when cutting carbs, going gluten free, getting rid of dairy, going carnivore, doing the Daniel fast, and all the other kick start diets are usually in full force. I love that my church kicks off each new year with a 3 week fast. It's up to the individual on what they feel led to fast, and naturally, certain kinds of food fasting gets picked. Which, honestly, I think is great. It's biblical and God calls us to it. And I'll say right here at the start - eliminating certain foods has its biological benefits in addition to the spiritual. And depending on how you do it or what you're taking out, there can be drawbacks. The biggest issue that I see is how people transition from those kinds of plans, diets, and fasts. Today I'm covering how different elimination diets affect you, how to do them well, and how to transition off of them to take advantage of them to the fullest for continued health and well being. I will be using the elimination of sugar and going carnivore as specific examples at the end! Whether you're doing an elimination diet or not, I'm confident you'll find important and helpful concepts for your health journey. Enjoy! Have you gotten the diagnosis of IBS? Jenn and Hannah are here to talk about why IBS is BS, and what things you can do to overcome the IBS symptoms. Tune in to learn more about digestion and gut health. On this week's episode, Jenn is joined by health coach, Hannah Alyward. Hannah walks through what IBS is and why the common recommendation of elimination diets isn't a forever solution. She explains why people experience bloating and what the bloating you are experiencing could mean. She also talks about what is happening inside of our digestive system when we eat. Hannah shares some tips for things you can do right now to optimize digestion and the best ways to support gut health. She is a wealth of information; you do not want to miss this episode! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:40] Hannah shares about her life before becoming a health coach. [7:48] Why is an elimination diet not a long term solution?[12:37] What is IBS and why is it BS?[14:07] What is natural bloating vs. bloating indicating a bigger issue? [17:39] Why are people experiencing a lot of bloating and when do you need additional testing? [25:40] What are some things we can do right now to optimize healthy digestion? [29:05] How do you know where to start with healing digestive enzymes? [31:48] Why are gallbladder removals so common? [37:04] Hannah shares her final thoughts around supporting your gut health at home. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The first priority to set up success for digestion is to ensure that your nervous system is calm and chewing your food to applesauce consistency to make sure that you are breaking your food down efficiently.Elimination diets are not meant to be permanent, they should only be a temporary solution to reduce symptoms that you are having while finding and repairing the root cause. Always advocate for yourself. Ask your doctors questions. If you are not comfortable with what they are recommending, seek a second opinion. If they are not listening to you and addressing your concerns or symptoms, seek a second opinion.QUOTES: [9:59] “What's so key here that I want to repeat is that the objective of the elimination diet is that we pull things out to create a healing opportunity, so that we can then add things back in and your body doesn't react the same way it once did once there's been that healing.” - Jenn Trepeck[17:47] “If you feel like this is really impacting your life and you've already made some nutrition adjustments, which are kind of like the first line of defense that people bring into play. If we take out processed foods, minimize gluten and dairy, if you've done all that and you're still feeling this way, it's time to work with someone that is an expert in this and explore some functional testing.” - Hannah Alyward[25:52] “Before food even makes it into the gut microbiome, our body is priming for digestion essentially. So if you can spend more time with your food, smelling your food, cooking your food, enjoying your food, chewing your food, these are how we set our bodies up to properly digest our food.” - Hannah Alyward[27:40] “Take six deep belly breaths before eating each meal, helping to calm and pacify the nervous system, and chewing your food into applesauce consistency, everyone can start there and it's free and it's easy.” - Hannah Alyward[36:13] “I wish everyone would dig deeper into their gut health, even if they have no digestive symptoms, because it influences fertility and skin and energy and just everything. even hair growth. All these systems are interconnected.” - Hannah AlywardRESOURCES:Birth Control Part 1 EpisodeBirth Control Part 2 Episode The Body's Daily Detox EpisodeDebunking Detox EpisodeBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESHannah Aylward's WebsiteFree Gut Health Root Cause QuizHannah Aylward's InstagramGood Gut Formula MasterclassGUEST BIOHannah Aylward is a Certified Holistic Health Coach, gut health specialist, and the founder of HAN, her functional nutrition practice taking a root cause approach to repairing the gut for real. Introduction Obesity Medicine expert, Ali Novitsky, MD, is super pumped about today's episode and the next three episodes, which will dive into the fascinating world of nutrition. Recently, she launched the Muscles & Mindset program, a comprehensive year-long strength training program that caters to participants at three different levels. It's an incredible initiative designed to improve overall health and wellness. But optimizing body composition and muscle mass also involves a significant nutritional component, which is why Dr. Ali is dedicating these episodes to exploring various aspects of nutrition. Intuitive Eating In this episode, Dr. Ali delves into the concept of intuitive eating, a method where you listen to your body's natural signals to determine what and when to eat. She shares a heartfelt personal story about her mom's intuitive eating habits, providing a real-world example of how this approach can shape a healthy relationship with food. Dr. Ali discusses the challenges of intuitive eating, particularly when consuming processed foods that can interfere with the body's natural hunger and fullness cues. The episode also explores the Whole30 program, a popular dietary regimen that aims to reset your body's cravings toward healthier options by eliminating certain food groups for 30 days. Dr. Ali explains how Whole30 can be a valuable tool for those looking to recalibrate their eating habits. Healing Your Relationship with Food Dr. Ali emphasizes that intuitive eating is not about achieving specific physical goals like fat loss or muscle gain. Instead, it's about reframing your mental and emotional relationship with food. This compassionate approach encourages individuals to trust their bodies and make food choices based on internal cues rather than external pressures or diet trends. However, Dr. Ali notes that by focusing on eating three servings of protein a day and minimizing processed foods and added sugars, you can likely see secondary physical benefits. This balanced approach helps improve overall well-being without the stress of strict dieting rules. G.O.A.L.S. Principles Dr. Ali introduces her intuitive eating principles using the mnemonic "G.O.A.L.S.": G: Get hungry first. Listen to your body and wait until you feel genuine hunger before eating. O: Observe for fullness. Pay attention to your body's signals and stop eating when you feel satisfied, not overstuffed. A: Allow your feelings. Acknowledge and process your emotions rather than turning to food for comfort. L: Love movement. Incorporate physical activity that you enjoy into your routine, making movement a positive experience. S: Stop perfectionism. Let go of the need for perfect eating habits and embrace a more flexible, forgiving approach to nutrition. These principles, combined with adequate protein intake and limiting added sugars, can help you become an intuitive eater who makes good nutritional decisions. Dr. Ali encourages listeners to adopt these guidelines to foster a healthier relationship with food and their bodies. Conclusion Intuitive eating is a compassionate approach to nutrition that can be particularly useful during vacations, stressful times, or even as a lifestyle. It's a valuable tool to have in your nutritional toolkit, offering a balanced and sustainable way to approach eating without the rigidity of traditional diets. Dr. Ali is excited to continue this nutrition journey with the audience in the upcoming episodes. She teases more insightful discussions and helpful tips on navigating the complex world of nutrition. If you haven't joined the Muscles & Mindset program yet, it's a great place to start. This program not only focuses on strength training but also integrates key nutritional strategies to optimize overall health. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements about her upcoming nutrition program! Dr. Ali invites listeners to take care, embrace the journey of intuitive eating, and look forward to more engaging content in future episodes - including next week's episode on Mindful Macros (spoiler alert!) The main purpose of the AIP diet is to remove common allergens and foods that could negatively affect gut health. Today, I'm sharing the primary considerations for deciding when to introduce foods that you've eliminated while following the AIP diet.In this episode, you'll learn about:- The purposes of an elimination diet- Common allergens that are excluded from an AIP diet- How long to follow the AIP diet- Addressing concerns about the AIP diet- What order to reintroduce foodsAs always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! To learn more, visit the show notes at https://savemythyroid.com/podcast/when-following-an-aip-diet-when-should-you-reintroduce-foods/. We havent ever talked about elimination diets beyond my vague reference to the LEAP protocol that you might follow after doing an MRT food sensitivity test in the last episode… Well here's an elimination diet that EVERYONE should follow immediately. This will help you get better, faster results no matter WHAT your goals are. This is an identity elimination diet. You might not be really sure of who you want to be, but you probably have a pretty good idea of who you DON'T want to be. Maybe you're not really sure what the END goal for working out and dialing in your nutrition is, but you do know that you don't want to go to your closet and stress about whether or not your favorite jeans are going to fit. So rather than focusing on ADDING things- adding workouts, adding tracking your food, adding a step goal, adding a bedtime routine, adding a morning routine… how about you focus on ELIMINATING what isn't working? Eliminate the things that the part of you that you aren't really proud of is doing. In this episode, we'll share a powerful Matthew McConaughey quote to frame our conversation, why elimination is essential, and how to start eliminating things from your life that no longer serve the person you want to become or the person you don't. If you're serious about figuring out what type of diet is best for you – your answer is nutrient dense foods. Let me explain…Food fear is rampant right now, with social media demonizing different common foods/ingredients as well as promoting “healthy” diets that lack necessary nutrient dense foods.Nutrients are the raw materials that the human body needs to survive and thrive. If you are not consuming nutrient dense foods, you may have nutrient insufficiencies, which puts a strain on various systems in the body.So when you believe in this idea that some foods are “good” and others are “bad”, it can create a restrictive way of eating, which can then lead to insufficiencies or deficiencies later on. All this can become incredibly confusing, especially when you're being inundated daily with influencer messages telling you to follow this diet or that. You may get to a point where you are afraid to eat! That's why today's conversation is SO important. I'm joined by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne to discuss how to approach optimal nutrition without dangerous elimination diets or dogma around eating.Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD is the founder of Nutrivore.com. She creates educational resources to help people improve their day-to-day diet and lifestyle choices, empowered and informed by the most current evidence-based scientific research. The Nutrivore approach is positive and inclusive dietary guidance, based on science and devoid of dogma, using nutrient dense foods as a foundational principle encompassed by the simple phrase: Nourishment, not judgment. Her new book, also called Nutrivore, is now available everywhere you can purchase books. We'll talk about some of the eye-opening points I discovered in the book, and why I found it such a valuable read to help you pick nutrient dense foods. In This Episode:Why nutrient deficiencies are such a HUGE problem (and how they happen)Why changing your mind is a good thing (even if you feel embarrassed)How morality applied to diet and foods is disastrousWhy you need protein (and what amino acids are used for in your body)The Nutrivore approach to optimal nutrition and nutrient dense foodsMost nutrient-rich foods to include in your dietQuotes“Deficiency technically refers to such low regular dietary intake of a nutrient that you develop a disease of malnutrition. There's scurvy, rickets, pellagra, beriber, night blindness, iron deficiency anemia. So we have these really well-characterized diseases caused by a single nutrient being too low.”“The more black-and-white we think about foods, the more it increases the risk for disordered eating, for weight regain cycles, so yo-yo dieting, the more it increases the stress response. And it's actually driving, I think, what is currently a big problem in society right now, which is that we think that a diet is about what we cut out. We think a diet is about bad foods that we have to eliminate. We're bad if we eat that bad food, we're good if we eat these good foods.”LinksFind Dr. Ballantyne online | Instagram | Facebook | Tiktok | YouTubeGET THE BOOK NOW – Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat5 Free Guides to NutrivoreHealthy Skin Show ep. 305: Elimination Diets, Food Fear + He
