Meanwhile, over at Meta, Zuckerberg's brilliant idea to loosen content moderation has, shocker, led to more harassment and violent content. Elsewhere in tech dystopia: Texas is trying to ground all minors off social media, Germany wants to slap a 10% tax on Silicon Valley, and Anthropic is handing out free search powers and a board seat to Netflix's Reed Hastings. Because nothing says “trusted AI governance” like a guy who greenlit Love Is Blind. But wait, crypto bros are having their own John Wick arc: a luxury townhouse, a missing wallet, and possibly an NYPD detective tangled in a real-life “crypto millionaire torture” flick. As if that isn't enough, Trump Media is fundraising to buy $2.5B in Bitcoin—and DJT stock promptly nosedived. Also feuding this week: Marjorie Taylor Greene vs. Grok, because nothing screams Christian values like rageposting at Elon's AI. Allen Hall: We're back with Lene Hellstern, the Director of Engineering at PEAK Wind, and we're talking about onshore wind siting, which is a really critical issue that a lot of operators have difficulties with. And I've seen it in the United States and it's not good. And I'm wondering from your perspective, what are some of the problems, Lene? Well first, welcome back to the podcast.  Lene Hellstern: Thank you. And thanks for having me repeat experience last time, so I hope so. I thought I'll pop in again.  Allen Hall: Well, it's good to have you back and thanks  Lene Hellstern: for coming to Copenhagen.  Allen Hall: Yeah, well we love Copenhagen. It's great. Uh, I just wish it was a little bit warmer. Yeah, the sun is terrific. Yeah. When you're in it, well, at  Lene Hellstern: least I fixed that. Right. Yes. It's not raining. It's not raining. Yes.  Allen Hall: We, we quite enjoyed it. Uh, but I'm trying to get an understanding of what the underlying issues are with onshore wind siding and why some of the operators have difficulty later on. Let's just start with the sighting [00:01:00] itself. Yeah. Is usually, we'll see a wind mast out on site for several months, maybe a year, maybe two years. To try to get some wind data. We would  Lene Hellstern: really like that. Yeah. Okay. But, uh, the preferable measurements are lidars.  Allen Hall: Oh, lidars. Yeah. I have not seen a lot of lidars in use. Lene Hellstern: No. You, you need to get some more.  Allen Hall: Why?  Lene Hellstern: Um, because they reach higher.  Allen Hall: Okay.  Lene Hellstern: Um, and you can, uh, you can, you can move them around. Right. And the hassle of installing a Met Mass that's a hundred meters tall, is, uh, is it a problem? Quite, uh. Quite it, it cost a lot more. Yes. Um, and, and the lidars, they, they just, they're better and they measure higher. And you can, you can have one sort of mother lidar and then you can move the other around and you can cover your wind resources and site suitability much better on the site. So I would definitely recommend  Allen Hall: lidars. Okay. How the lidars use a [00:02:00] good bit of power to make them run, correct? Yes. So you need a decent power source? Yes.  Lene Hellstern: You do? Yes.  Allen Hall: Okay. Yeah. I, is that one of the difficulties why they don't use a lidar? Is it just in a lot of remote areas, they don't have the power source to run it?  Lene Hellstern: It could be, or it could be the, the lack of knowledge. Right. Traditionally we have used med masks, yes.  Allen Hall: Forever.  Lene Hellstern: Uh, so, so it could be, and then there are also some, um, uh, some issues with uncertainties because the lidar is the, the standards are not up to date. I would say that's the political way correct way of saying it. So. Eh, the standard actually introduces more uncertainty on the lidar that's really not necessary to, due to a calibration with a me mast. Um, so that there's some, there's some things that needs to improve in that area  Allen Hall: because a lidar should be a lot more accurate than a met mast. Lene Hellstern: Yes. Yeah. Yeah. But, but the, the downside of the lidar, so that, that is not often we see that, is if you don't have enough particles in the air,

President Trump's recent visit to the Gulf region marked a dramatic shift from the previous administration's Middle East diplomacy. In his visit to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, Trump focused on securing significant investment commitments and commercial partnerships to support the region's AI and other ambitions.  The trip showcased Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy—one focused on bilateral deals rather than regional frameworks, and economic partnerships over military interventions. It also raised important questions about oil markets, geopolitical competition with China, nuclear agreements, and the future of energy prices. So what are the likely impacts of massive investment pledges from Gulf nations? Do low oil prices limit the ability to make good on them? What is the outlook for oil prices with uncertainty over OPEC+ policy, a possible Iran deal, and possible new sanctions on Russia? And what does Trump's transactional diplomacy mean for traditional alliances and regional stability?  This week, Jason Bordoff speaks with Helima Croft, Joe McMonigle, and Karen Young about how the Trump administration is reshaping U.S. relations with Middle East countries and the long- and short-term implications it will have on energy markets and geopolitics. Helima is managing director and global head of commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, where she leads the coverage of energy markets and geopolitical risk. Joe is a distinguished visiting fellow here at the Center on Global Energy Policy and the founder and president of the Global Center for Energy Analysis, an independent research and analysis firm. Karen is a senior research scholar here at the Center on Global Energy Policy and a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute where she focuses on the political economy of the Gulf States and energy policy. We're off this week for the Memorial Day Holiday in the US so we present here one of our most popular episodes, a classic IF from August 13, 2021 with the incomparable marine biologist from Australia, Dr. Vanessa Pirotta. Take a deep breath and enjoy this deep dive! ---- WHALES spend their entire lives inside a medium, water, in which they can't actually breathe. So throughout the day, and the night, they have to swim to the surface to take a breath of that sweet, sweet ocean air… or they die! We humans, and other land lubber mammals like us, are spoiled, just inhale, anytime you want, and… problem solved. But — What The IF humans had to breathe by dunking our head in water? The amazing Dr. Vanessa Pirotta joins us from Sydney, Australia to take us into the wet and wild thought experiment, so we can learn real science! Imagine living the life of the whale, turned on it's head. What world would we have built if our bodies worked this way? It's like what if we emerged from the oceans, as we believe life did, but never adapted to breathing outside the water like we used to. Humans with gills? Are we wearing helmets on our head that are filled with water? Do we fill our *buildings* with water? Water the IF! — Dr. Pirotta is a wildlife scientist and a gifted science communicator. Her zoological background has taken her around the world for wildlife research. Vanessa is also a passionate and experienced science communicator who loves making science accessible. Her keen interests cover topics of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, also known as STEAM. Vanessa has represented Australia internationally as the national winner of a world-renowned science communication competition known as FameLab, placing second in the world. Vanessa's efforts to communicate science has also seen her become a TEDx speaker, speak at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and recognized as one of the top 100 Women of Influence judged by the Australian Financial Review. The Board of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (YSTE) has announced that Stripe, the programmable financial services company with dual headquarters in Dublin and San Francisco, has been appointed as the new title sponsor of Ireland's most prestigious and well-loved STEM exhibition. Signing a 5-year agreement, Stripe assumes the role of title sponsor for YSTE from BT Ireland who, up until this year, was custodian, sponsor and organiser of the exhibition for the past twenty five years. Following a competitive selection process, Stripe secured the title sponsorship thanks to its shared passion with YSTE and commitment to promoting STEM education in Ireland - values exemplified by co-founder Patrick Collison, a former YSTE winner, and his brother John, who also won a category award at the exhibition. Stripe was also chosen for its clear vision for YSTE, its multi-year sponsorship commitment, and its ability to support the large volunteer force required for the delivery of an exhibition and event of this scale. Founded by Dr Tony Scott and Rev Dr Tom Burke in 1965, the exhibition is a staple in the academic, scientific and technological calendar every year, and attracts on average over 40,000 visitors, thus making it one of the biggest events of its kind both in Europe and worldwide. The winners of the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition advance to participate in prestigious international events such as the European Union Contest for Young Scientists. Professor Pat Guiry, Chairperson of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition Board, said, "I would like to congratulate Stripe on their selection as the new title sponsor of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. What really struck the Board was the level of commitment and passion Stripe displayed in wanting to honour the legacy and vision that Dr Tony Scott and Rev Dr Tom Burke created more than sixty years ago." "Collaborating with BT Ireland has been a true privilege for our Board and their dedication in shaping the exhibition into what it is today has been nothing short of inspiring. While they leave a remarkable legacy, we are confident that Stripe will be exceptional partners in the years ahead - not only given Stripe's global reputation as a leader in tech innovation, but also given its strong connection to YSTE through Patrick and John Collison, who are both past participants in the competition, with Patrick taking home the overall top prize in 2005." Patrick Collison, Co-founder and CEO of Stripe, also said, "YSTE is a special institution for me and John. It amplified our curiosity and reinforced our confidence at a critical juncture. We're honoured that Stripe has been selected to help preserve it for generations to come." Speaking about the appointment, Minister for Education, Helen McEntee TD, said, "The Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition has grown to become one of the most successful, and respected events focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Europe, if not the world. The incredible legacy it has left to date is immeasurable and I have no doubt it will continue to inspire and promote STEM and innovation for many more years to come." "I would like to thank BT Ireland for delivering an exhibition of such a high standard for over 25 years. We look forward to continuing our strategic partnership with the YTSE and working with Stripe as they continue to empower students to embrace new ideas, foster curiosity and encourage a love of learning." Dr Tony Scott, Co-founder of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, said, "We are delighted to welcome Stripe as a partner in shaping the next chapter of our exhibition. Their support ensures we can continue to inspire the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and innovators. It's vital that we not only sustain the strong reputation and level of interest in the exhibition year-on-year, but continue to evolve and engage young inquiring minds in new an...

Since the mid-1990s, the U.S. social safety net has been geared towards policies that encourage and reward work. While steady jobs and decent wages are the surest routes out of poverty, evidence shows that safety-net work requirements rarely translate into higher employment among beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP–formerly known as “food stamps”). Diane Schanzenbach joins EconoFact Chats to explain how stricter mandates often push people off SNAP without pulling them into the labor market, a dynamic that becomes more relevant as Congress weighs bills that would make continued SNAP and Medicaid benefits contingent on having or actively seeking work. Diane is the Margaret Walker Alexander Professor of Human Development and Social Policy at Northwestern University. She is also a member of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine. She recently testified in front of the House Committee on Agriculture on the issue of increasing SNAP's mandatory work requirements.

In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, Neil is joined by Jose Soto, VP of Engineering at Converge Marketing, to discuss how data democratization transforms performance marketing. Jose highlights a common bottleneck in marketing where engineering teams act as the data gatekeepers, often slowing down marketing efforts. He explains how empowering marketers with self-service access to data through intuitive platforms speeds up decision-making and drives measurable growth for brands. Jose talks about how Converge has broken down data silos by creating clean data pipelines and user-friendly tools that allow non-technical users to interact with data confidently. Instead of relying on engineers, marketing teams now have the freedom to access data, build reports, and analyze trends in real-time. Neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer is an expert on sleep – or, more accurately, an expert on why so many can't sleep. He notes that, ironically, it's often anxiety about sleep that prevents good sleep. In short, we lose sleep over lost sleep. Wearables and other tools can help but only to a point, and medications do not induce natural sleep. Instead, he counsels consistent routines, less stimulation at bedtime, and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce worry about insomnia. Unfortunately, you can't work harder to get better sleep – you have to learn to relax, Zeitzer tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? We often associate energy poverty with developing nations, but the reality is that tens of millions of Americans struggle to pay their monthly energy bills. Oftentimes, they forgo heating or cooling their homes in order to pay rent or buy food. And ultimately, they risk losing access to energy altogether, through utility shutoffs. For families living in inadequate housing with poor insulation and inefficient appliances, energy insecurity impacts health, comfort, and quality of life. For some, government assistance programs are a lifeline. Yet, despite rising energy rates, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is in danger of losing funding.  So what policy solutions could address the systemic causes of energy insecurity? How can government assistance be reframed to better support and empower energy insecure households? And will the transition to clean energy alleviate or worsen energy insecurity? This week, Jason Bordoff speaks with Diana Hernández about her recent book that seeks to answer those questions and proposes a framework for energy equity. Diana is an associate professor at Columbia University and co-directs the Energy Opportunity Lab at the Center on Global Energy Policy. Her book, "Powerless: The People's Struggle for Energy," which she co-authored with Jennifer Laird, an assistant professor at Lehman College, was released in April.
