Maria Barna is an authority on ribosomes – “life's most ancient and spectacular molecular machines.” Ribosomes make proteins in the body. There can be a thousand different types of ribosomes in a single cell, she says, each with a specific job to do. But sometimes things go awry and ribosomes get “hijacked,” leading to disease. Barna studies these “diabolical” variations to find new therapies to treat diseases ranging from cancer and COVID to Parkinson's. Joshua Clark Davis is an associate professor of U.S. history at the University of Baltimore. He spent eight years researching, combing through police and civil rights activists' records, as well as news reports, to piece together acts of police violence and surveillance during the Civil Rights Movement. His research is now detailed in his new book, “Police Against the Movement: The Sabotage of the Civil Rights Struggle and the Activists Who Fought Back.” On Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Davis joined the program to talk more about his findings and what he wants readers to walk away with after reading it. BYU-Idaho to offer new AI Engineering minor starting in Spring 2026 by BYU-Idaho Radio

NASA’s twin ESCAPADE spacecraft have finally launched on their journey to Mars. Designed to study how the solar wind interacts with Mars’ patchy magnetic fields and drives the loss of its atmosphere, ESCAPADE is NASA’s first dual-spacecraft mission to the Red Planet and a major milestone for the SIMPLEx program’s small, low-cost planetary explorers. The mission began its voyage aboard Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket after several weather and space weather delays, marking the vehicle’s first science launch. We begin with Ari Koeppel, AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow and Space Policy Intern at The Planetary Society, who was at Cape Canaveral for the prelaunch activities. Ari shares what it was like to navigate repeated scrubs and even a powerful solar storm, along with the emotional experience of watching a spacecraft carrying an instrument he helped build begin its voyage to Mars. Next, we are joined by Dr. Rob Lillis, ESCAPADE’s Principal Investigator and Associate Director for Planetary Science at UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. The project is testing a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer or “DWPT” system, whereby transmitter coils underneath the road can send energy to an electric vehicle without ever having to plug it in – a power transfer system that is similar to wireless charger technology for smart phones.In West Lafayette, IN, the Indiana DOT and Purdue have successfully tested a quarter mile of highway on U.S. Route 231 and U.S. Route 52 equipped with over 80 transmitter coils that carried charge to the test vehicle.On the podcast, McCue and Pekarek discuss the multi-faceted aspects of the DWPT project, including the economic viability of the project's technology, potential size limits of vehicles able to use the road, and working on public roadways that can see thousands of drivers daily. Both stress that this DWPT project could significantly expand the range of electric vehicles on U.S. highways.

Refugees from Nazism to Britain in Trade, Industry, and Engineering (Brill, 2025) is a book in German Studies that explores the intricacies and impacts of refugees on British industry and engineering, through which new technology, business ideas, and strategies were imported to Britain. The book has fifteen chapters, detailing individual stories of fifteen different contributors, including Tony Morgan, whose contribution is a survey of the impact of refugees on the social and domestic life in Britain. Refugees' contributions in this regard include various spheres of activity, such as making toasters and organising group travels. Apart from Morgan's contributions, Anna Nyburg notes the importance of each individual story in understanding the broader impact of refugees on trade, industry and engineering. The book emphasises the importance of mobility and development in society, and how this was facilitated by the efforts of the German refugees in Britain. Among such efforts was the development of a corrosion-resistant substance by Shell. The book also highlights wartime challenges faced by refugees during the Second World War, including bombing and shortages. The book emphasises that the refugees' experiences are same as the challenges of the British population, such as rationing and material shortages. The book reflects on how many refugees diversified their businesses to contribute to the British war effort, such as producing parachute silk. As part of the war experiences of the refugees, the book also accounts for the alien internment of refugees in Britain. As organizations have worked to leverage the power of AI in interacting with large language models, they've invested in prompt engineering to generate better results. But agents shift the need manage the full context of not only the prompt, but also the data that's being presented.
