The sound of mining — And the sound of money — All across Griqualand West, tent towns mushroomed overnight, teeming with fortune seekers from around the world. Tens of thousands by 1873, all descending on a patch of dusty ground that was soon to become a beacon of development on the landscape. Kimberley. In the modern world, industrial diamonds have hammered the industry business model, China overwhelmingly dominates global production of synthetic industrial diamonds accounting for about 90% of the total total. But in the 19th century, diamonds were still as rare as as teetotaler in a Kimberley tavern. This episode we'll hear about the entrepreneurs both black and white, and the future Robber Baron and colonial Dreamer, Cecil John Rhodes. It was in May 1871 after the harvest at the Rhodes brothers cotton farm in Richmond in Natal had come in, that Rhodes began his long career of harvesting the right connections. Brother Herbert sailed to Natal two years earlier, and now Cecil was helping manage the 250 acre farm, helped by 30 black labourers. Herbert however had heard about the riches discovered in Griqualand West and headed off to the Diamond Fields in early 1871, leaving Cecil to run the show in Natal. Young Cecil attended the annual meeting of the colonies agricultural society where he exhibited samples of their cotton, in attendance were Natal's colonial elite. There were long after-dinner political speeches, all ending with a toast. IN the haze of cigar and tobacco smoke, and a haze of multiple shots of whiskey, one settler called for a man to offer the traditional toast to the Ladies. So it was ironic that Cecil Rhodes rose in response, and thus delivered his first ever public speech according to his friend and biographer, Lewis Mitchell. Ironic because Rhodes would never form a initimate relationship with a woman as far as we know . As he grew more powerful, he would always surround himself with young male private secretaries and later would make one - Neville Pickering, the sole beneficiary of his will. In the Victorian era, being openly homosexual was socially unacceptable and illegal, so any such relationships would have been kept private. We are hampered by a lack of personal diaries or revealing letters from Rhodes himself, making it difficult to reach a firm, irrefutable conclusion about his private life. The scale claim-owners did much of their own manual labour, but for the most part the work was done by black labourers, picking at the ground, smashing the bumps of earth and rock, sieving the lime dust through a coarse wire sieve, rubble thrown aside, what remained placed on a sorting table. A small scraper would be used to spread the rock on the tables, scooping after picking the diamonds out, repeat repeat. In early 1872 Herbert went back to their farm in Richmond to welcome yet another brother, Frank, to South Africa. Cecil was left in charge and suffered under the stress, hard labour in a harsh climate, supervising his business, and a sudden death of his friend John Thompson. He was smoking and drinking too much, breathing in too much dust, dehydrated — and collapsed — to be nursed back to health by John Blades Currey's wife, Mary. He was still only 18 years old and almost died. In his miasmic state, he wrote his will which is prescient, and somewhat theatrical, leaving all his possessions to Britain's Secretary of State for the colonies, Lord Kimberly instead of his family. New promulgations were thus passed by the miners themselves, black people could not stay in the mining camps for longer than two days without a master, they also had to observe a curfew after 9pm. Punishment for failing to observe these rules, 25 lashes or 10 shillings fine. All this at a time when most of the English-speaking world was repealing lashing.

Today's 66 Day Challenger is Chez, a South African who heard me being interviewed about sobriety on the radio She didn't act immediately but the seed was sewn… Chez did our Challenge back in 2018 when it was called the Sober Spring Challenge.  Of course the 1st September is the beginning of Spring here in South Africa but we are so international these days that we've rebranded the Challenge #Sober66… So of course if you live in the northern hemisphere it will be a Sober Autumn for you!   In this episode: Chez knew for years that she had a drinking problem but struggled to find a method that worked — rehab and AA didn't suit her. Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions on the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, saying, “The United States has repeatedly condemned and objected to biased and malicious activities of Albanese that have long made her unfit for service as a Special Rapporteur.”  Today we are joined by three of Albanese's predecessors—John Dugard, Richard Falk, and Michael Lynk, who talk about what these sanctions mean. Between 2008 and 2014 he served as UN Special Rapporteur on Israeli Violations of Human Rights in Occupied Palestine.Falk has advocated and written widely about ‘nations' that are captive within existing states, including Palestine, Kashmir, Western Sahara, Catalonia, Dombas.Falk has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times since 2008.Michael Lynk was a member of the Faculty of Law, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada between 1999 and his retirement in 2022. He taught courses in labour, human rights, disability, constitutional and administrative law. He served as Associate Dean of the Faculty between 2008-11. He became Professor Emeritus in 2023.In March 2016, the United Nations Human Rights Council unanimously selected Professor Lynk for a six-year term as the 7th Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967. He completed his term in April 2022.He has written about his UN experiences in a 2022 book co-authored with Richard Falk and John Dugard, two of his predecessors as UN special rapporteurs: Protecting Human Rights in Occupied Palestine: Working Through the United Nations (Clarity Press).Professor Lynk's academic scholarship and his United Nations reports have been cited by the Supreme Court of Canada, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations General Assembly.

In December 2023, when South Africa accused Israel of genocide before the International Court of Justice, I thought it was wrong to do so. Israel had been attacked. Its defense was legitimate. The blood was on Hamas's hands.But over the last year, I have watched a slew of organizations and scholars arrive at the view that whatever Israel's war on Gaza began as, its mass assault on Palestinian civilians fits the definition of genocidal violence. This is a view now held by Amnesty International, B'Tselem, Human Rights Watch, and the president of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, among many othersOne reason I have stayed away from the word genocide is that there is an imprecision at its heart. When people use the word genocide, I think they imagine something like the Holocaust: the attempted extermination of an entire people. Can a central bank simply announce an inflation target and get everyone to believe it? Our Global Economist Arunima Sinha looks at the cases of South Africa and Brazil to explain why it's a subject of decades-long debate. Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Arunima Sinha: Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Arunima Sinha, Global Economist at Morgan Stanley. Today I'm going to talk about how inflation targets of central banks matter for market participants and economic activity.It's Tuesday, August 12th at 10am in New York. Tariff driven inflation is at the center of financial market debates right now. The received wisdom is that a central bank should look through one-off increases in prices if – and it is an important if – inflation expectations are anchored low enough. Inflation targets, inflation expectations, and central bank credibility have been debated for decades. The Fed's much criticized view that COVID inflation would be transitory was based on the assumption that anchored inflation expectations would pull inflation down. The Fed is more cautious now after four years of above target inflation. Can a central bank simply announce an inflation target and get everyone to believe it? Far away from the U.S., the South Africa Reserve Bank, SARB, is providing a real time experiment. The SARB's inflation target was originally a range of 3 to 6 per cent, with an intention to shift to 2 to 4 percent over time. At its last meeting, the SARB announced that it was going to target the bottom end of the range, de facto shifting to a 3 percent target. A decision by the Ministry of Finance in the coming months is likely necessary to formalise the outcome, but the SARB has succeeded in pulling inflation down. It has established credibility, but we suspect that more work is needed to anchor inflation expectations firmly at 3 percent. Key to the SARS challenge, as the Fed's – the central bank cannot control all the drivers of inflation in the short run. For South Africa, fiscal targets and exchange rate movements are prime examples. The experience in Brazil offers insight for South Africa. The BCB adopted an inflation target in 1999 following the end of the currency peg that helps the transition away from hyperinflation. The target was initially set at 8 percent, lowered to 4.5 percent in 2005, and then lowered again to 3 percent in 2024.Fiscal outcomes, market expectations, and currency volatility have been hard to contain. The lessons apply to South Africa and also the Fed. Successful inflation targeting relies on a clear framework, but also on institutional strength and political consensus. For South Africa, as inflation falls ex-ante real interest rates will rise. That outcome will be necessary to restrain the economy enough to make sure that the path to 3 percent is achieved. For an open EM economy, there likely needs to be consistency by both monetary and fiscal authorities with regard to short-term pressures, both internal and external. While we ultimately expect the SARB to be able to anchor inflation expectations, the journey may not be a quick one; and that journey will likely depend on keeping real interest rates on the higher side to ensure the convergence.We take the experiences of South Africa and Brazil to be informative globally. Simply announcing an inflation target likely does not solve the problem. The Fed, for example, spent much of the 2010s hoping to get inflation up to target – while now ironically, inflation in the US has run above target for almost half a decade. Whether the lingering effects of the COVID inflation has affected the price setting mechanism is unclear, as is whether tariff driven inflation will exacerbate the situation. Our read of the evidence is that inflation expectations and central bank credibility come from hitting the target, not from announcing it. Thanks for listening. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson 4 of 5 most populated countries hostile to Christianity International Christian Concern reports that now “four of the five most populous countries in the world share a disturbing reality: Christians are systematically and harshly persecuted within their borders.” And we would add that these four nations have stepped up persecution against Christians over the last ten years. The four countries are China with a population of 1.41 billion people, India with a population of 1.46 billion people, Indonesia with a population of 285 million people, and Pakistan with a population of 255 million people. By contrast, the United States, with a population of 347 million people, is the other top 5 most populated country which actually allows for religious freedoms. Russia won't comply with 1987 moratorium on nuclear missiles Last week, Russia announced it will no longer comply with the 1987 moratorium on deployment of nuclear-capable intermediate range missiles. These missiles are designed to bring total annihilation to European cities. This opens the way for nuclear-capable launch vehicles to be deployed proximate to theaters of military operation. China doubled nuclear warheads China began its nuclear buildup in 2018—increasing its nuclear firepower from 280 to 600 warheads, and adding 350 new Intercontinental ballistic missile silos this year. This buildup took place at the same time France and the United Kingdom reduced their nuclear arsenals. 80th anniversary since U.S. dropped atomic bombs in Japan This month marks the 80th anniversary since the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The city of Hiroshima marked the anniversary with a memorial event. The city's mayor, Shiro Suzuki, addressed the gathering, as one whose parents survived the 1945 attack. Suzuki said, ”Conflicts around the world are intensifying in a vicious cycle of confrontation and fragmentation . . . and if we continue on this trajectory, we will end up thrusting ourselves into a nuclear war. This existential crisis of humanity has become imminent to each and every one of us living on Earth." Youth unemployment up worldwide The BBC reports some Chinese college graduates are actually paying for a pretend job. The outlet mentions a business called “Pretend to Work Company."   With real jobs increasingly hard to come by, some young adults would rather pay to go into an office rather than to be stuck at home. This year, China's youth unemployment rate has scraped 17 percent. Canada has seen a sharp increase of youth unemployment—now at 14.2 percent. Italy's rate is upwards of 22 percent, and the United Kingdom has seen more increases of youth unemployment what they call “youth economic inactivity” in recent years—now at 13.4 percent. But youth unemployment in South Africa is the highest at 61 percent. The Apostle Paul exhorts the youth and all of us that "If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread." (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12) World Vision justified in denying employment to a lesbian The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled  that the Christian ministry, World Vision, was well within the law when they denied employment to a lesbian named Aubry McMahon who was in a sinful relationship with a woman she called her “wife.” The court held that the ministry had not violated federal or Washington state non-discrimination laws because it was covered under the “ministerial exception.”  Abortion Kill Pill has enabled abortion rate to increase despite Dobbs Americans are killing significantly more babies following the U.S. Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade through the Dobbs decision on June 24, 2022. Official records put the annual number at 1.1 million, up from 880,000 in 2020. That's a 25 percent increase. The difference appears to be made up by the abortion kill pill by mail program. About 63 percent of the murder of babies is executed by the abortion pill now, and 25 percent of all abortions come by “Telehealth” or by mail. Twenty-two leading Southern Baptist pastors have issued a letter to President Donald Trump, requesting that the administration “stop the mail-order distribution of the abortion drug mifepristone.” To this point, the Trump administration has been reticent to limit access to the abortion kill pill. In May, the U.S. Justice Department recommended tossing out a lawsuit that would have restricted a reduction of access to Telehealth abortions. In an interview with interview with Time Magazine in December, the president reiterated five times, that it was "highly unlikely” the Food and Drug Administration would do anything to restrict access to the Abortion Kill Pill.  However, God is in control. Jeremiah 51:19, 20, and 24 reminds us "He is the Maker of all things;  and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance. The Lord of hosts is His name. You are My battle-ax and weapons of war: For with you, I will break the nation in pieces, says the Lord." California fire has burned 120,000 acres The State of California is dealing with more out-of-control fires. The Gifford Fire started up last Wednesday, and has already consumed some 120,000 acres. It's now threatening the towns of Arroyo Grande and Santa Maria. Sadly, it's only 30 percent contained.  Grand Canyon fire has burned 144,000 acres The Dragon Bravo fire in Arizona has shut down the Grand Canyon North Rim for the season.   This fire has burned up 144,000 acres. In God's all powerful workings, this fire began by lightning strike on Independence Day, July 4th. Despite tariff revenues, 2025 U.S. deficit is $109 million higher than 2024 And finally, despite the Department of Government Efficiency, the tariff hullabaloo, and the influx of import taxes to the federal government coffers, this year's deficit, through July, is a whopping $109 billion more than it was last year. The deficit totaled $1.6 trillion over the first 10 months of fiscal year 2025—heading towards a $1.9 trillion deficit for the year. That's about eight times the average deficit incurred under the George W. Bush administration.
