Mike Ghaffary is a General Partner at Burst Capital, a venture capital firm specializing in early-stage investments in marketplace, software, and AI companies. With an impressive background spanning roles at Canvas Ventures and Social Capital, as well as co-founding Stitcher, he has been instrumental in the growth of companies like Yelp and Eat24, demonstrating his expertise in scaling businesses. Mike has a background in computer science and holds both a JD and MBA from Harvard, and he's invested in high-growth companies like Strava, Superhuman, Faire, and Optimizely. In this episode… The rise of artificial intelligence has sparked widespread anxiety about job displacement and economic upheaval. With rapid advancements outpacing traditional training models and workforce development, many are left asking: Will AI only benefit a select few, or can it create meaningful work opportunities for the broader population? Mike Ghaffary, a seasoned investor and founder in tech and marketplaces, believes AI has enormous potential to generate — not eliminate — jobs, if applied wisely. Drawing on historical parallels from the Industrial Revolution and the early internet era, Mike explains that while disruption is inevitable, new opportunities always emerge. He highlights the importance of equipping workers to collaborate with AI, especially in skilled trades like HVAC and electrical, which are essential to supporting infrastructure like data centers. Mike also cautions founders about the risks of chasing venture-scale growth at all costs, advocating instead for profitability and strategic patience. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Mike Ghaffary, General Partner at Burst Capital, about how AI will fuel job creation and transform Main Street. Mike also shares insights on scaling Eat24, landing a game-changing partnership at TrialPay, and why the future belongs to software-powered small businesses.

Today Ali asks Asif about the new ‘Superman' movie by James Gunn, which Asif saw recently (1:11). After Asif gives his near spoiler-free review, he then gives Ali a quiz on all things Superman. Then in the second half, Ali asks Asif about genes that can give people “superhuman” powers (22:56). Asif talks about tetrachromacy, where people have an extra type of cone cell in their retina. He then goes over LRP5 mutations which in theory can give unbreakable bones (but which can also cause some other unwanted side effects). Asif follows this up by discussing how the same genetic mutation which causes red hair may also give people increased pain tolerance. Finally Asif discusses how a certain genetic mutation (DEC2) can result in people needing less sleep. In this technical deep-dive episode, Generation AI hosts Ardis Kadiu and Dr. JC Bonilla unpack Andre Karpathy's groundbreaking keynote on "Software 3.0" - the third revolution in how we tell computers what to do. They explore how we've moved from writing explicit code (Software 1.0) through neural networks (Software 2.0) to programming in plain English with LLMs (Software 3.0). The discussion reveals why LLMs represent a new computing paradigm comparable to the shift from mainframes to personal computers, and why Karpathy believes we're still in the "1960s era" of this revolution. Most importantly, they examine the massive opportunities this creates - from rebuilding infrastructure to creating agent-first applications - and why every software company needs to adapt or risk disruption. Whether you're a developer, entrepreneur, or education professional, this episode provides essential insights into the decade-long transformation ahead.Introduction and Context Setting (00:00:07)Decision to do a "geeky episode" after last week's personal discussionIntroduction to Andre Karpathy's Y Combinator keynote "Software is Evolving Again"Karpathy's background: Tesla self-driving, OpenAI co-founderSetting up the framework for understanding software evolutionSoftware 1.0: The Era of Explicit Instructions (00:03:55)Timeline: 1950s to 2010sProgramming with explicit instructions in languages like Python, C, COBOLDeterministic and predictable behaviorExample: Writing functions to classify spam emails with specific keywordsHow traditional developers were trained in this paradigmSoftware 2.0: Neural Networks as Programs (00:04:59)Timeline: 2010s to 2020sPrograms written as neural network weights instead of codeHumans become data curators rather than code writersTraining as the new form of "compiling" programsExample: Training neural networks on billions of emails for spam detectionThe shift from deterministic to probabilistic programmingSoftware 3.0: Natural Language Programming (00:07:00)Timeline: 2020s onwardProgramming in English through promptingLLMs as programmable computersEveryone becomes a programmerExample: Simply asking an LLM to "classify this email as spam or not"The democratization of programmingLLMs as the New Operating System (00:10:26)Three perspectives: utilities, fabrication plants, and operating systemsLLMs as utilities: like electricity, metered access, high reliabilityLLMs as fabs: enormous capital requirements, deep technical secretsLLMs as OS: new computing platform with CPU (LLM) and RAM (context window)Comparison to 1960s mainframe era - What if you could train your body to feel the world without seeing it? Mike Zeleznik—known as Mas Mike—did just that. From a strict religious upbringing in Utah to studying with Shaolin monks and the royal family of Java, he learned to harness chi, the life force energy behind intuition, strength, and even healing. Now he's bringing those ancient secrets to modern life through Murpati Putti (MPE) and vibrovision—techniques that train your mind and body to sense beyond the five senses. Whether you're curious about energy work, martial arts, or awakening your own untapped abilities, Mike's journey shows what's possible when you access the power already inside you. About Mas Mike: Mas Mike whose journey into the unseen resonates deeply with your show's themes. As someone featured on Gaia's Superhuman documentary, Mas Mike has crafted a unique process that aids individuals in accessing their 6th sense—an ideal complement to the transformational shifts you emphasize. Mas Mike boasts over 30 years in martial arts and engages with 167,000 self-improvement enthusiasts eager to explore these discussions deeper. 1. Introduction to the Theme: Superhuman Selling Collaboration with Elyse Archer: The focus on superhuman selling and celebrating personal/professional evolution. Not everyone celebrates your progress, and that's a sign you're on the right track. 2. Redefining Winning in Sales and Business Moving beyond tactical changes to deeper transformation (“changing your source code”). Three pillars of true winning: Alignment, energy, and identity. 3. What “Superhuman” Really Means Clearing misconceptions: It's not about superpowers. Referencing pop culture (Superman old and newfE movies) as a light-hearted segue. Emphasis on authenticity: Shedding the mask, stopping the act, and remembering your true self. 4. The Sales Shift: From Forcing to Attracting Moving away from scripts, tricks, and hacks. Selling becomes about inner frequency, presence, and fully believing in yourself. Transition from chasing prospects to attracting them. 5. The Crucial Difference: Identity vs. Mindset Mindset is not the main lens—identity is. If you're still hustling or trying to be liked, you “leak energy” and repel prospects. The exhaustion of wearing a false persona. 6. Personal Growth Analogy: The Lobster Story Lobster's uncomfortable shell as a metaphor for outgrowing your former identity. The necessity (and discomfort) of shedding what no longer fits to allow for new growth. 7. The Identity Upgrade and Its Effects Upgrading identity causes a sudden, noticeable shift (“snap into place”), not just incremental change. Importance of alignment: Doing the necessary work from a genuine place rather than effortful striving. Referencing Yoda and The Matrix: Moving from trying to simply doing—making selling second nature. 8. The Challenges of Transformation Acknowledgment that the journey isn't easy or always positive. Your nervous system and old connections may resist your change. Social consequences: Some friends may distance themselves or subtly wish for your failure. 9. Emotional Realities of Growth The temptation to shrink back to your former self for comfort and acceptance. Powerful encouragement to resist this temptation (“Don't you dare”). The discomfort of growth as proof of real progress (“receipt that you're doing it right”). 10. The New Paradigm: Becoming the Win Shifting from chasing external wins to embodying the win internally. Your state of being (sale), presence (pitch), and alignment (close) are key to sustainable success. Letting go of “faking it,” and selling from wholeness rather than lack. 11. Support and Next Steps Recognizing and validating listeners who are navigating their own shifts. Teaser for something new and exciting coming soon in partnership with Elise Archer. Small businesses are increasingly recognizing the need for digital maturity and the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational efficiency. A recent report from the National Federation of Independent Business reveals that while a significant majority of small business owners have websites, only a small fraction accept online payments. This gap highlights a pressing need for integrated e-commerce solutions that not only enable payment processing but also align with the workflows of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The report indicates that many SMBs are eager to adopt technology that addresses specific pain points, with a notable percentage already utilizing AI for communication and marketing tasks. The concept of agentic AI presents a substantial growth opportunity within the technology sector, particularly for partners over the next few years. However, the adoption of agentic AI varies significantly across different market segments, with large enterprises focusing on building ecosystems around major platforms, while SMBs are more likely to adopt AI through software-as-a-service solutions. Despite the potential, a report from Gartner warns that a significant percentage of agentic AI projects may fail due to factors such as rising costs and immature use cases. This underscores the importance of informed decision-making and practical applications of AI technology.Regulatory changes are also shaping the landscape for businesses, particularly concerning data privacy and governance. Creative Commons has launched an initiative called CC Signals to create a framework for sharing datasets in the age of AI, addressing concerns about data accessibility and ethical practices. Meanwhile, a recent Supreme Court ruling in the U.S. mandates age verification for websites with sexual content, raising alarms about internet privacy and the potential risks to personal data security. These developments signal a shift in the regulatory environment, emphasizing the need for businesses to prioritize compliance and data governance as core components of their operations. In the realm of technology solutions, several companies are introducing AI-powered tools aimed at improving IT support workflows and cybersecurity measures. TeamViewer has launched TeamViewer Intelligence, which enhances remote support capabilities, while Hornet Security has introduced AI Cyber Assistant tools to bolster security for SMBs. Additionally, acquisitions such as Grammarly's purchase of SuperHuman and Comet Backup's acquisition by WebPros reflect strategic moves to enhance service offerings and integrate communication tools. As the market evolves, IT service providers must leverage these advancements to create higher-margin service offerings and ensure they remain competitive in an increasingly AI-driven landscape. Microsoft's latest round of layoffs hits Xbox Gaming hard as the company cuts approximately 9,000 jobs despite record profits. This week, Paul Thurrott and Richard Campbell discuss the impact of these layoffs, Windows 11's new version naming, Microsoft Copilot coming to Mac, and dive deep into passkey security. LAYOFFS As expected, Microsoft began a massive round of layoffs across Xbox/Microsoft Gaming on Wednesday. The fiscal year started on Tuesday. These were originally going to happen a week or two earlier. 9,000 employees impacted across Microsoft - about 4 percent of workforce, Xbox/MSGaming was NOT hit hardest, Microsoft now says (on top of 6,000 in May). 10 percent of King being laid off. Carefully worded email from Phil Spencer requires some parsing. It's Finally Official: 25H2 Is Next! Microsoft finally admits that the Dev channel is testing Windows 11 version 25H2, which will arrive, as expected, around October This news came as part of another set of commingled Dev and Beta channel builds. 25H2 will be delivered as an enablement package, so it's a minor release technically. Dev and Beta are linked because 25H2 and 24H2 are linked: Each will get the same features, as started with 22H2/23H2 in late 2023. Windows 11 Last week was Week D, but we didn't get preview updates per usual before WW That finally happened last Thursday - new preview updates for 24H2 and 23H2/22H2 24H2: Click to Do improvements, start of PC migration in Windows Backup, small icons in Taskbar, more. Windows Insider Preview: Those Dev/Beta builds noted above have the first implementation of third-party passkey. Microsoft Edge 138 is a pretty big update, with AI-enhanced history search and Copilot integration into the search box and new tab page. AI Microsoft 365 Copilot is available on the Mac. Apple may cave and adopt Anthropic Claude and/or OpenAI ChatGPT for Apple Intelligence. After Coda's acquisition and $1 billion in funding, Grammarly acquires Superhuman to build an "AI-native" productivity suite that will take on Big Tech (Microsoft, Google) and Little Tech (Notion, Proton) alike. Xbox and Gaming Xbox 360 dashboard is getting its first update in years. Halo Studios teases an October tease of the next Halo from the studio. New Game Pass titles for the first half of July - plus, COD: WWII turns up in Game Pass for the first time. Cursor sort of comes to the web and mobile - like Adobe Firefly on mobile, but for devs when "the mood strikes". Tips and Picks Tip/App picks of the week: Cure Mac envy. The Mac is about to get even prettier. But Windows 11 can rise to this challenge. The PC matters: Paul recommends Surface Laptop 7 as a MacBook Air alternative. Software? It's all free. Full screen apps: Hide the Taskbar and touchpad gestures - also, use DS Clock if you need to see the time. Transparent system menu? You can make the Taskbar transparent too. Want Spotlight?
