When we think about healthy eating and nutrition, we think in terms of all-or-nothing. We think ‘I’ll do good today, this week, and this month,’ but if we don’t follow through (counting macros, calories, etc.) we tend to abandon those efforts. And this results in feeling like a failure. I came up with the Strategic Day to help guide our Body Buddies to make wiser decisions to fuel their bodies AND stop abandoning healthy efforts for the sake of it being 'too hard' and 'overwhelming.' I asked myself, 'What can I do to help people without making them feel they’re restricting themselves or feeling like they’re on a diet?' The Strategic Day is 15 Principles is exactly what your body needs for health. You may find if you hit these principles every day, you are full and you DON’T need that non-strategic food. You don’t need it because you’re fueled. Get your Strategic Day PDF printout here: http://powerfoodslifestyle.com/strategicday   Learn the foods associated with each category so you can quickly scan your mind and make a strategic food choice in a quick amount of time.

If you or someone you love has been dealing with migraines or a mental health condition, this Body Buddies podcast episode is for you! Patty Butts, PhD sits down with host, Kristy Jo, to discuss the details of the MTHFR gene mutation, and how nutritional choices can manifest negatively in mental health. “All mental health begins in the gut," she said. "The vagus nerve and the gut are connected.” Patty goes on in the episode to explain how she understands the emotions that can trigger depression: anger, guilt, loss of esteem, love, etc. However, she feels there is more. "Of course there are emotional components, but we are missing the boat by not having a young person who is depressed or acting out not having their blood tested. I wish this could be taught in every health class. Our young people need to know there are physiological reasons they’re depressed. Sometimes it’s genetic, high histamine, or what they’re eating." Additional symptoms people experience should cause us to check for the MTHFR gene mutation. These include: Sleep disturbance Cardiovascular Depression Fatigue Chronic Pain Mental Illness History of Miscarriages Patty Butts is a Licensed Professional Counselor, has a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition, an M.Ed. in counseling, a B.S. in Communications & Journalism, and is the author of "Defeating Depression & Beating the Blues," and "Free Yourself From Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. She went back to school after battling Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia for 5 years and being deathly ill. Only then did she discover she has liver cancer and a fragile immune system. With an alkaline diet where she juiced every day and did microscopy, she was able to recover fully. She discovered she had more parasites in her blood than the doctor had ever seen. Within 4 months she was in remission. Patty is a Grandmother, mother of seven, stepmother to twelve. Clinical and medical hypnotist, NLP, and Certified Emotion Code Practitioner, and Life Coach www.healingyourspirit.com www.chronicfatigueandhealingyourspirit.com, Clinical Hypnotist, Jordan Heights Holistic Mental Health, South Jordan, Utah Certified Elan Light therapist. About MTHFR MTHFR is a genetic defect. It is an enzyme that adds a methyl group to a form of folate. This process is called methylation which is important as it. These enzymes impact gene regulation, hormones, build immune system, produce energy, and protect nerve cells. 40 out of 100 people have this and don’t know it… and now 1 out of every 2 people has some form. You can’t handle folic acid when you have MTHFR, which is in everything. The government mandated folic acid (B9) added to the foods due to birth defects and added to cereals and bread. It’s also in most vitamins so look in the medicine cupboard. Take methylfolate and active Vitamin B12. Candida craves sugar, dairy, and carbohydrates. It’s a yeast in you saying ‘feed me, feed me, feed me.’ IT can cause all kinds of symptoms like fibromyalgia, fatigue, and depression by building up the lactic acid. Taking antibiotics is like having an atomic bomb going off in your stomach. They produce all kinds of candida. They kill off good bacteria and produce growth of bad bacteria. What is Leaky Gut and the Microbiome?  Latest research reveals we are doing ourselves a disservice by not looking at the root cause of illness and disease. How could that be? Due to the connection between the ecosystem in the gut and all the bacteria housed there, researchers are finding the direct correlation between how we eat, autoimmune conditions, mental health conditions, and nearly every one of these "mystery illnesses" that continue to pop up. Talking about the chemicals in our food and how they are changing our biology is a topic that many don't want to hear; in fact, they believe I am quite controversial when I talk about this. However, that mental construct, carefully crafted through cultural paradigms and media programming, is doing no one any good. Instead, it's making us sicker and sicker and raising our mortality rates, insurance premiums, and dissatisfaction with life with each passing year. Body Buddies has taken a dramatic shift over the past 6 months and will continue to do so as we focus on preventative health in addition to foundational systems of nutrition and supplementation to helping the body calm, organs to function properly, and to get the main contributor to stressful state bodies out of the picture. Then, and only then, are all the tests, additional doctor's tests, and procedures going to be of any good to you. Strong statements, but I believe them whole-heartedly and see it all the time. I hope that each of my Body Buds are open-minded enough to learn, consider the reality of what is causing these disturbances in their bodies, and then make the changes necessary as they feel appropriate. We have FAR more power over the environmental situation than we may convince ourselves. Let us rise up and take control... and create a BEAUTIFUL BRAIN and life. In this Body Buddies podcast episode, Mary Tate courageously shares her story of debilitation for over a decade with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder from her teenage years through her mid-twenties. She lived in one room in her parents' home and didn't know if she would ever live a "regular" life. After she was able to find solutions, Mary got married to her sweetheart. She then had a son who brought new challenges into her life with what she discovered eventually as Sensory Processing Disorder. In her conversation with Kristy Jo, she shares the following: At what point of something being "off" with your child do you need to accept something is wrong? When do you take your child into a specialist? How years of Occupational Therapy and Tactile Therapy  slowly helped her son to begin functioning like a healthy, young boy. Sensory Processing Disorder--what it looks like, sounds like, and the experience of home schooling a child with SPD. How gut health is connected to helping her son function as healthily as possible. How yogurt is not the best source of probiotics or children and the sugar content is far too high to be the best choice (ad the type of place to actually find a good probiotic). Why artificial colors are so problematic for kids, even without ADHD, to increase hyperactivity. Why keeping sugar low in children is  a top focus point. How families can  find community for support, ideas, and therapies online. Mary and her husband didn't sit back and complain that their son had so many conditions to work through. They stood up to find solutions, help their son, and Mary now helps other families with children who have special needs. When you power your body, you work on it from the inside out. From faith and the spirit to the thoughts and food, you have control over what goes into your body!  In holistic health, the whole body is integrated. This includes thinking, attitude, emotions, beliefs, fitness, and nutrition. It's the whole body approach. "Mary believes mothers should always advocate for their child. YES! You can do this! You go through things for a reason. As you get further into your life, you will be able to bless and serve those behind you." Mary offers the following for Special Needs Families: 1. Membership Group Online 2. One-on-One Family Coaching 3. Family Group Coaching Mary's Website: www.treeoflifehealthcoaching.net Mary's Facebook Page:Click Here to View About Mary Tate: Mary Tate is the owner of Tree of Life Health Coaching.  She is known as the Health Coach for special needs families.  She provides a wide range of services to support families achieve the wellness goals they have for their families. As a teenager, Mary suffered with severe OCD and was debilitated for 10 years of her life.  She was 60 lbs. overweight and depressed. Through the grace of God, she fought here way out and eventually got married and had a family.  Her first son had a rough start in life.  He was plagued with oral aversion which made it hard to breastfeed, low muscle tone which resulted in developmental delays, chronic constipation, eczema, and reflux.  At 12 months of age, he was diagnosed as Failure to Thrive and had Sensory Integration Dysfunction which is now known as Sensory Processing Disorder.  The family went through years of feeding therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy to help get him on the right track.   As a mom to a special needs child, Mary knew the importance of adopting a healthier lifestyle than what she grew up with, so did the research and started introducing a whole foods approach to their meals.  It was hard for him, but she fought every day to get him the nutrition he needed.  She kept breastfeeding so that he was also getting the nutrition that I was taking in as well.   In 3rd grade, he was diagnosed with ADHD and we started a whole new level of education.  So that’s when she decided to get certified as a health coach.  She did it for her son and now wants to give back and serve those families who are following behind her.   Mary follows the Dr. Sears model of health. L.E.A.N. Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, and Nutrition.  Those 4 pillars of health truly encompass what it means to live a holistic life.  Mary can’t wait to empower families to take the steps needed to help them achieve their wellness goals for them and their family.

You may have noticed I started slipping cookies into the end of the show after the outro.  A ‘cookie’ in the lingo of the podcasting ‘biz’ is a blooper that I find particularly engaging.  Like last week when I either wrote into my script or spell checked in that Australopithecines had ‘disposable’ thumbs! That’s just too funny not to share.  Today we speak with Kristy Jo.  I love that name.  It’s like something from a TV show. Kristy shares some very good tips and tricks around her Power Foods nutrition plan. I read through her book and it’s quite sensible. I know this whole weight loss nutrition thing is a real challenge for so many people and I thought we’d give you some pointers from someone who has been through it all and get her approach.  I have been steadily losing weight as well.  I wrapped up my 30 day plan at the end of August but decided to keep it going.  My training is going really well at the lighter weight. I want to see where I can get to by the Portland Marathon next month.  Last episode I erroneously said I was down to 170 pounds. That was incorrect.  What I meant was 175 pounds, which is still good, because I started at 185ish.  I’m currently in the low 170’s with a body fat percentage of in the 10’s.  Body fat percentage is a much better metric than weight or BMI.  A good range for a guy my age is in the low teens.  All that aside what I’m really pleased with is how much better workouts feel and how well my heart is responding.  That’s how I define ‘feeling healthy’ and that’s what I’m going for.  We have a wonderfully hewn, well crafted, and individually designed for your specific needs - show for you today.  It’s a thing of beauty this show.  I had it hand crafted by virgin baby koalas just for you. In section one I’ll answer some rapid fire running questions.  In section 2 I’ll talk about the Wapack Trail race I ran over Labor Day weekend.  I was wondering if anyone was going to write in about my math problem when I told the story of the store clerk in Atlanta.  And I wasn’t disappointed.  For the record, I know that 30% plus 20% can be calculated 2 different ways.  When you combine a 20% discount with a 30% discount the answer is either 50% or 44% depending how you apply the discounts.  Glad to see you’re paying attention.  Makes me feel loved. There are a billion podcasts these days aren’t there?  It’s funny how the cycles turn.  Someone should do some research on it.  First it was just us hobbyists and the big news outlets.  Now everyone with a platform has gotten the message that a podcast is a must-have channel – especially the internet marketing folks.  Thank you for joining me on my journey.  You don’t have to.  I’m doing it because I like doing it. It allows me to practice my creativity and production.  It forces me to think critically about topics.  It allows me to interact with people I find interesting.  I explore topics and people that are interesting to me, that’s why I can keep producing for 9+ years and 350 shows.  I do it for myself.  At the same time, whenever I create anything I think about the audience.  I ask the question “Why do you care?”  This keeps me from getting too wrapped up in myself and allows me to add value.  If you don’t care I’m just an annoying old dude that you sat next to on a long flight and won’t shut up even though you put your headphones in and pretended to sleep.  I don’t want to be that guy.  I do have a membership option to defray the cost because I’m a capitalist at heart and not a charity!  I’m working on a proper set of books but as near as I can figure I spend about $1,500 a year on the podcast.  Consider buying a membership. I’m still working on a separate iTunes feed for it.  My guy in Nigeria can’t quite figure out how to make the remote header calls work with my wordpress plugin, but I’m working on it.  If you’ve known me for any length of time you know I’m patient.  When I decide to do something it takes on the inevitability of a glacier.  … The RunRunLive podcast is Ad Free and listener supported.  We do this by offering a membership option where members get Access to Exclusive Members Only audio Last week I uploaded two, count ‘em, two, book reviews.  One for the Neal Stephenson SevenEves scifi tome and another for Moonwalking with Einstein, a treatise on memory techniques. Member only race reports, essays and other bits just for you! Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … How about some useful running information?  How about that?  Instead of all this waffling on about the creative act?  OK One of the workouts Coach gave me this week was a medium effort hill workout.  Many times you will run longer or faster hill workouts for leg strength or as a type of speed workout or threshold workout.  That’s not what this particular workout is for.  This is a workout to practice form. Hills are a great place to practice form because running uphill naturally forces you up onto your forefoot, to take shorter, more rapid strides and to lift your knees.  Hills bring the form to you.   For the medium effort hill repeat you are only doing 30 seconds. That’s long enough to get into your form but not long enough to stress you.  You do the workout at medium effort, so maybe a 7-8 on a scale of 1-10.  People always ask ‘how steep should the hill be?’  For these medium effort repeats you can actually answer that question.  When you get into the repeat itself your form should be clean.  If you’re having to lean forward or struggling to get your feet turning over – the hill is too steep.  When you run the repeat focus on pushing off rapidly from the forefoot.  Push your hips forward.  Run tall.  Keep your chin up, your shoulders high and loose and your hands high and loose.  Focus on the form, not the effort.  Don’t carry anything in your hands.  Jog down the hill and don’t start another rep until your heart rate settles down.  I usually leave my bottle at the bottom of the hill.  I stop when I get back, take a drink, walk a bit and when my HR falls under zone 2 I’ll ease into the next rep.  I also find a stick and scratch a tally mark into the dirt after every rep.  It makes a game out of it.  Do a set of 10-15 of these.  These are great, especially if you are trying to clean up your form.  Like I said a 4-6% hill will automatically help you clean up your form.  And I’m pretty sure the sine of that angle is the opposite over the hypotenuse, but I could be wrong.  Practice makes perfect.  Do your practice.  On with the show.   Section one – Running Tip Roundup - http://runrunlive.com/running-tip-roundup Voices of reason – the conversation Kristy Jo Hunt My Skype is "kristyjohunt." My home website is  but there is much under construction with funnels, and I fear not everything leads back to one congruent space. I will put my bio below: Kristy Jo Hunt is a Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, published author, and natural Women’s Figure Competitor. I have no intention of being on that course for 9 hours.  Am I missing something?  Coach is still trying to talk me out of it so I can focus on the Portland marathon on October 9th.  What I like about him is that he’s old-school.  He thinks every race is an Olympic qualifier.  But, I’m at the point in my life where I have to try new things and have some fun too.  That being said if I can maintain the diet and come out of Portland strong I’ll look at the calendar and see if there isn’t something serious to train for.  I’ve got to figure out if we are going to do the Groton Marathon again this year. … Many of you are running your goal races now or over the next few weeks.  Good luck with those.  Remember that the hay is in the barn and there’s nothing you can do in the last couple weeks to make up training.  As you are in your taper towards your race you can use a couple of the things we talked about here to help you stay sane.  As your training load gets lighter you have an opportunity and the time to do some of the fine-tuning things.  Think about practicing the mediation and visualization that we’ve talked about. Work in some easy yoga every other day to stretch and strengthen your machine. Do some meal planning around your taper weeks to go into the race lean and strong with a lot of energy. That’s how you apply the tools from the conversations we have here. That’s the real trick with all the content available to you.  You’re like a DJ.  You are the creative genius for your life.  You take all this stuff in and mix it to make your own sound, your own movie and craft your own story.  Make sure you get the ending right. In this podcast episode, Kristy Jo joins Rachel Gonzales, one of the triumphant members of Body Buddies who has risen above the cycle to reach her goals, and now wants to share her message with others. In this episode, Kristy Jo and Rachel discuss the following: -Why this obsession is very prevalent in gymnasts, dancers, cheerleaders, etc. -Feeling lie you put in a lot of effort but don't get the results you want -Feeling condemned to look how you currently do, assuming a "nothing works" mentality -Beginning to worry more about you FEEL than how you look -How to focus on spirituality while simultaneously working on body composition shifts -How eating more over time in a progressive manner helps you get tighter and have more energy -Fluff and Softness > Fat (vocabulary changes for psychological purposes) -Overcoming the fear of not working out because you're scared you'll get "fat" -Not using contest prep as a motivation to "get in shape" Tune into this episode to learn, get inspired, and see that there is a better way of thinking, eating, and training. This episode is one we hope will help at least one person realize there is a better way, and paint a picture of hope for them. www.Body-Buddies.com
