Guest Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University and author of the best-selling book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning. Peter is a former high school mathematics teacher whose work emphasizes collaborative learning for a more effective mathematics education.  Most recently, he received the Læringsprisen [Learning Award] for Changing the way we think about Education in Denmark (2022). Summary The podcast episode explores Professor Liljedahl's journey in understanding how teaching practices affect student learning in math classrooms. He shares his observations of a teacher struggling to implement problem-solving, leading to student frustration and disengagement. This prompted him to research the psychology of mathematics education and develop the "thinking mathematics classroom" approach, emphasizing practices such as using vertical whiteboards, random grouping of no more than three students, and note-making. The discussion delves into the benefits of these methods, such as increased student engagement, collaboration, and the ability for teachers to provide timely support. Dr. Liljedahl also addresses the challenges of balancing direct instruction and messy learning, as well as the origins and difficulties of the algebra curriculum. The episode concludes with a discussion on the future of education, emphasizing the importance of teachers and the need for more training in neuroscience and child psychology. Bonus tracks I've also included two bonus tracts with Peter and Danelle on my website blog post for this episode. One speaks specifically about student note-making, another of Peter's practices. The second tract speaks to Algebra's challenge to student success. For some, artificial intelligence represents the latest development in an age-old series of fantasies about escaping our vulnerable, imperfect, animal bodies. Humans have continuously developed tools to boost our capabilities; in the case of AI, we're amplifying the speed of cognitive processes. But what capacities remain distinctively human? Dr. Susan Hrach is the author of the 2022 Silver Nautilus Award-winning book Minding Bodies: how physical space, sensation, and movement affect learning (WVU Press, 2021). As an undergraduate, she spent a year studying at the Universität Innsbruck, Austria, which shaped her lifelong interests in world literature, translation studies, and global education. Her international teaching experiences inform her on-going research and practice. In 2022-23 she served as Fulbright Canada Distinguished Research Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Carleton University in Ottawa. Currently Director of the Faculty Center and professor of English at Columbus State University in Georgia, Dr. Hrach has been recognized by the University System of Georgia with a statewide Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award; she has also served as a scholar for the USG's Executive Leadership Institute. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation and provides executive coaching within and outside of higher education, incorporating embodied strategies to support mental and physical wellbeing. Nonsense! Powerpoint does! Plus, slides are even more amazing since AI can automatically input images of people with bizarre facial expressions and eight fingers! As nonsensical as that last line is, how ridiculous is it that learning (for whatever age) has lost ‘touch' (pun intended!) with the fact that physical space, sensation, and movement affect learning? This is why Dr Susan Hrach's book Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, Sensation, and Movement Affect Learning grabbed our attention. And while talking about attention, here's a quote from Susan's book we loved. “The goal of increasing one's IA (Interoceptive Awareness) isn't to become more accurate but rather to gain more control over our attention to internal signals and to better regulate our responses to them.” As the hype train for AI in learning continues to gather pace, we should also listen to the marginal (playful renegade) voices advocating for IA. In this episode, Ryan has a great conversation with the current Strategy Officer at Market Muse, Jeff Coyle. Jeff is a data driven search engine market executive with over 20 years of experience in lead generation, inbound consultation and is also a top 50 award winner for artificial intelligence and machine learning. Listen in to this episode to hear Jeff discuss Market Muse's marketing strategies including what using a hybrid model can mean for you and your business.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Strong inbound marketers create a large flow of customers. Jeff and his company use a hybrid of sales based and product basked marketing for growth and although this can be complicated, he finds it incredibly robust and effective. Market Muse is a content intelligence platform that sets the standard for content quality. So, creating an appropriate experience for a person or team using Market Muse means that every content decision you make, is made with market muse data including ROI predictions and data. A phase of development that makes you top tier as a search engine professional, is creating and executing an adjacent content strategy, E.g content operations, paid social, community management and conversion rate optimisation. Building a content led seo allows you to demonstrate your expertise. It shows you understand your customers, the business and you can also build content and communities post-purchase too. Strong referrals from existing customers are invaluable. As well as being a great lead generator they also build trust in the brand. If you only focus on the end customer, like PLGs often do, then you will never learn how to sell to a buying team. You'll never learn the skills to become a hybrid model. Understanding how to make that jump from the end user to learning to work with buying teams is essential. BEST MOMENTS “It's effectively giving me insights and then action in the form of operations for content with the goal of being able to predict ROI and execute more efficiently”  “How people get there, what they do when they get there, all really matters for search” “I love champion referrals, they are a great source of revenue for every business, somebody who loves your product” “If you don't know how to sell to a buying team, how to make your proposition sexy, you'll never get to the content marketing lead, the editor, GM or CO and that's where PLG companies get it wrong”   Do You Want The Closing Secrets That Helped Close Over $125 Million in New Business for Free?"  Grab them HERE: https://www.whalesellingsystem.com/closingsecrets   Ryan Staley Founder and CEO Whale Boss 312-848-7443 ryan@whalesellingsystem.com www.ryanstaley.io    EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffcoyle https://blog.marketmuse.com/marketing-ai-profile-jeff-coyle/ ABOUT THE SHOW How do you grow like a VC backed company without taking on investors? Martin Blank's early figurative work swiftly solidified his place as a premier figurative sculptor working in glass. The artist expanded his contributions to the contemporary glass scene in 2001 when he introduced his sensual and fluid abstract landscapes. An innovator with an intense drive to create and to push his material, Blank's influences include glass masters Pino Signoretto and William Morris and artforms as diverse as origami and opera. Blank states: “My work explores what I call visual mirroring. It deals with abstract forms and their spatial relationships. Mirroring is the way two juxtaposed objects relate to one another. There is a dialogue that is created between these forms. A tenuous and tactile presence is created. It is the resonating voice. Each shape relates to its adjacent partner. In this intimate stage, each element has the ability to affect and echo the other. There is a moment when these objects reach their peak visual potency. This is the essence of what is revealed while I create.” Blank emerged as one of North America's premiere figurative sculptors with a style quintessentially his own, admiring the grace and flow of the human form since childhood. In 1984, the artist earned his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. That same year, he moved west to begin his professional career in Seattle, working at the center for studio glass and learning from the driving force behind it – Dale Chihuly. Blank brought his infectious enthusiasm and courageous desire to push the material to Chihuly's team, all the while establishing his own contributions to the glass movement. From his Lotus series to Deconstructed Blue and Adorn series, Blank's sculpture can be found in international locations including the Millennium Museum in Beijing, China, the Shanghai Museum of Fine Art, Shanghai, China, and the American Embassy in Slovakia. The artist was among a group of America's most renowned glass artists invited to make presentations to create public art for the World Trade Center park in New York City. His work is included in private collections and museums around the world to include the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, Stanford, California; and the Cleveland Museum of Fine Art.  In 2001, Blank created the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation “Access to Learning” Award for recipients in Finland, Argentina and Guatemala. His own honors include: the Award of Excellence for the International Glass Invitational, Habatat Gallery, Royal Oak, Michigan, 2006, 2010, 2013 and 2016; Artists Grants, Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington, 1986 and 1990; and artist residencies at Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington, 2003, 2007. His public abstract landscapes include: Current at Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington; Repose in Amber at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Indiana; Fluent Steps at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington; and Steam Portrait at 99 Church Street, New York, New York. These public sculptures reveal nature's inherent structure and celebrate the complementary relationship of natural and figurative objects in space.  Blank recently completed a new installation at Imagine Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida, titled If a River Could Tell a Story, an installation and ecosystem of light, reflection, form and motion, on view through 2022. The artist was commissioned to collaborate on a work of art for Imagine Museum with founder, Trish Duggan. The fluidity of motion contained in the work invites one on the journey of the river of self-discovery. Every year, Imagine Museum selects its Artist of the Year, a contemporary artist whose art fosters the appreciation of the artistic and expressive nature of glass. For 2022, Blank was chosen, as he is one of the premier figurative sculptors across the globe whose work distinctively expresses motion, sensuality, and the powerful resonance of human landscapes. Since the 1990s, as an independent artist in Seattle, Blank has produced art and commissions for contemporary collectors, museums and gallery exhibitions. Whether it is a collection of flower blossoms, a monumental abstract installation, or a figurative sculpture, his hot sculpted glass is made with a combination of technical exactitude and creative exuberance. His working relationship with glass is an intimate one, as he wears heat protective clothing, gets very close, and employs his entire body while molding the molten material. Intuitive and deliberate, he is nonetheless open to enhancing his visual vocabulary with the happy accidents of glasswork. Blank states: “It always intrigues me when the forms reveal a negative space that is as vital and potent as the actual objects. Great sculpture is like music, all you have to do is feel it.”

Expansion and expressions of academic workQuotes From This Episode"I think probably one of the biggest things that I’ve come to realize is that the whole publishing enterprise is a conversation...thinking about your scholarship, not in these sort of atomistic chunks, but as part of a larger conversation that both precedes what you’re doing, and will also generate more work and more conversation and more wisdom, and more practical outcomes."On publishing... "The analogy that I use when I'm doing a lot of outreach is 'merging into traffic.' I grew up in Chicago and so when you're merging onto the Dan Ryan, there are lots of other people you have to take into account, right? Nobody's blindly merging onto the Kennedy! And so all those other cars are people having, not the same conversations, but similar conversations, and how does your work contribute to merging into that traffic of a conversation?""I’m totally convinced...I’m absolutely convinced that the difference between people who are very well published, and people who are not well-published, is this ability to separate themselves from them or from their work."Resources Mentioned in this EpisodeArticle: Kerr, S. Kickstart Innovation, one of Europe’s leading innovation platforms, announced the initiation of 48 Proofs of Concepts (PoCs) and other partnerships between start-ups, scale-ups, and established companies and institutions. For this purpose, large companies are increasingly interested in collaborating with high-growth start-ups,” explains Katka Letzing, Co-Founder and CEO of Kickstart Innovation. These collaborations have gained even more importance if Switzerland is to maintain its innovation engagement on local and global levels. Furthermore, our corporate values to make things simple, drive innovation and act in an open collaborative way build a strong foundation for successful POCs,” says Andreas Schönenberger, CEO of Sanitas. And anytime I dim my light and dim my shine, I'm actually being more selfish than of service." - Lisa Nichols Lisa's phenomenal story and life-changing message has seen her make appearances on The Oprah Show, The Today Show, The Dr. Phil Show, and The Steve Harvey Show – just to name a few. Lisa's also made it her mission to impact the lives of teens. Through her non-profit foundation Motivating the Teen Spirit, she has touched the lives of over 270,000 teens.  Lisa has authored several books, including her two recent New York Times best-sellers, “Abundance Now” and “No Matter What”. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Motivating the Masses, Inc., Lisa has developed workshops and programs providing resources and tools for personal transformation, and encouraging others to share their message in a powerful and impactful way. Lisa has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Humanitarian Award from South Africa, The Ambassador Award, and the LEGO Foundation‘s Heart of Learning Award. As if that wasn't enough, to honour this phenomenal woman, the City of Henderson, Nevada named November 20th Motivating the Teen Spirit Day.  The City of San Diego named April 25th Motivating the Masses Day, and the City of Houston, Texas named May 9th as Lisa Nichols Day for her dedication to service, philanthropy and healing. This conversation was a long time coming, and Lisa did not disappoint. This interview was packed with inspiration, life lessons, powerful messages, an abundance of wisdom…and LOTS of EMOTION.   In Part 1 of this incredible conversation, we get to know Lisa and her early struggles.  And she shares how she defines being “extraordinary” in a way most people may not realize. "I'm an ordinary woman who simply chooses to pick one or two or three extraordinary decisions to make each day. And if I make enough extraordinary decisions enough days in a row, then I create an extraordinary experience. If I create enough extraordinary experiences enough days in a row, then I might experience an extraordinary lifestyle." - Lisa Nichols
