In this Mindfulness in Action episode, I'm talking about one of the sneakiest forms of distorted thinking: shoulds. You know the ones: I should be doing more. I should have this figured out by now. I should be more disciplined, more patient, more productive. These thoughts can sound helpful on the surface, but often they leave us feeling ashamed, guilty, disconnected, and never quite enough. In this episode, I break down three common types of “shoulds”: the outward-facing shoulds tied to habits and expectations, the shoulds that come from a lack of self-acceptance, and the shoulds rooted in unrealistic standards for ourselves or other people. I also share practical mindfulness tools you can use in real time to work with these thoughts instead of getting hooked by them. We explore practices like labeling, cognitive diffusion, acceptance, self-compassion, psychological distancing, and grounding in the present moment. This is not about getting rid of every self-critical thought forever. It's about learning how to notice them, soften their grip, and come back to what's actually here.If you've been feeling pressured by your own inner voice lately, this episode is a reminder that you are not alone. There are skillful, compassionate ways to meet yourself in those moments.Other meditations:- Slowing Down the Rush- How to Regulate Your Emotions for Resilience and Performance- How to Combat Self-Criticism--------------The Grow the Good Podcast is produced by Palm Tree Pod Co.
Are you playing the game, or being played by it?Tom Bilyeu is an entrepreneur, co-founder of Quest Nutrition, and founder of Impact Theory, one of the most-watched interview platforms in the world. He has spent years studying the systems that shape financial outcomes, and in this conversation with Dr. Michael Gervais, he makes a case that most people find unsettling: the financial system you're working inside was not designed with your interests in mind.Tom argues that the single most important thing most people are missing is not effort or ambition, it's a clear-eyed understanding of how the system actually works. He walks through why inflation is not a natural economic phenomenon but a mechanism that quietly transfers purchasing power from workers to asset owners, why 10% of Americans own 93% of assets, and why the gap between the wealthy and everyone else is not a bug in the system, it's a feature. But this conversation goes well beyond economic critique. It's also about the beliefs and mental models we carry that keep us operating on a map that no longer matches the terrain. Tom introduces the idea that beliefs are not truths, they're interpretations, and that updating them, especially the ones about money, work, and what's possible, is the most leveraged thing a person can do. He also offers a clear-eyed take on AI and why the people who learn to use it as a force multiplier will have an enormous edge over those who don't.In this conversation, we explore:Why the Federal Reserve system was designed to benefit asset owners and how inflation quietly steals purchasing powerHow 10% of Americans came to own 93% of assets, and why it was baked in by designWhy your beliefs are interpretations, not truths, and how to use that insight to your advantageHow to think about investing across 12 to 15 economic forces rather than chasing individual stocksWhy AI is the most important force multiplier available right now, and how to use it without losing your own thinkingWhat the K-shaped economy is, what it means for the next generation, and what parents need to knowTom's not here to make you feel good about where things stand and where we're headed. He's here to hand you a better map. What you do with it is up to you.___________________________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! This talk explores Wise Awareness as the art of seeing life clearly enough to actually live it. So much of human regret comes not from dramatic mistakes, but from drifting through our days half-awake—disconnected from our bodies, driven by unseen reactions, caught in mental weather, and estranged from what matters most. Drawing on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, we'll explore awareness of body, feeling tone, mind, and the deeper patterns of dharma as direct doorways to freedom. Wise awareness is not passive observation; it is precise, embodied, liberating seeing that brings us back to the vividness of this moment and helps us live with greater authenticity, intimacy, and presence. You'll learn how to ground attention in the body, recognize feeling tone before it hardens into grasping or aversion, identify mind states without becoming trapped inside them, and see the lawful patterns of impermanence, suffering, and not-self unfolding in real time. We'll explore how mindfulness interrupts automatic living and reveals a more deliberate, wholehearted way of being. By the end, you'll have practical ways to deepen awareness in everyday life so that you are not merely getting through your days, but inhabiting them fully—with clarity, freedom, and fewer regrets.
Kerry Docherty has spent her life being two things at once: the good girl the world expected, and someone far more complicated underneath. As a result, a fierce competitiveness finds its way into every aspect of his life. But as the years go on, Tim begins to question whether this winner-takes-all mentality is the healthiest way to live. There's a good chance that, if you're an avid Bossed Up listener, the spiral of the do-it-all overachiever is familiar to you. You're stressed out, maybe burnt out, and potentially navigating anxiety, too.. Maybe you fear that seeking more balance means losing the drive that makes you successful and sought-after. Boost mental sharpness today and prevent cognitive decline tomorrow, including Alzheimer's disease, with science-backed strategies that will extend your brain's longevity beyond what you thought was possible. The most important part of the body, especially as we age, is our brain. So why aren't we taking the health of our brain as seriously as our heart and achy joints, particularly when people are struggling to focus every day, and dementia and Alzheimer's cases continue to rise? In The Stimulated Mind, Dr. Tommy Wood, a Formula 1 sports performance coach and neuroscientist specializing in lifelong brain health, dispels the myth that the brain is doomed to decline with age. Instead, by providing the right stimulus and building more "headroom"—the amount of mental function we have available to us—we can help our brain to adapt and develop. A lot of us were taught that apologizing means taking full responsibility for the whole dynamic—becoming the problem so the relationship can stabilize—or avoiding repair because it feels too vulnerable. In this episode, Vanessa Bennett, LMFT breaks down the difference between accountability and self-abandonment, and how codependency often functions as relational anxiety management (collapse on one side, defensiveness and distancing on the other). We explore shame as the through-line—why guilt says “I did something,” but shame says “I am the problem”—and what a grounded apology actually sounds like: specific, bounded, and rooted in truth. The invitation is simple and hard: name what's yours without collapsing or defending, and let reality show you what the relationship can hold. For educational purposes only. In this episode of the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast, Molly talks with J.W. Wiseman, founder of Curious Elixirs, about the rise of craft non-alcoholic cocktails and why they matter so much for people who want a more peaceful relationship with alcohol. J.W. shares how his own desire to drink less led him to create one of the earliest brands in the non-alcoholic beverage space, long before “sober curious” became a mainstream term. Together, Molly and J.W. explore the idea that drinking less does not have to mean settling for something boring, basic, or deprived—it can still feel elevated, flavorful, social, and deeply satisfying. From the origins of Curious Elixirs in 2015 to the role of functional herbs, adaptogens, and intentional drink design, this conversation offers a fresh look at how non-alcoholic beverages can support people across the sobriety spectrum. Molly also challenges the common belief that a drink needs alcohol to be worth enjoying, reminding listeners that taste, ritual, and experience matter too. In This Episode, You'll Hear: Why J.W. started Curious Elixirs before the term “sober curious” even existed How non-alcoholic beverages can support a more intentional relationship with alcohol Why flavor, ritual, and connection matter more than alcohol itself How Curious Elixirs helped pioneer the craft, functional non-alcoholic cocktail category The role of herbs and adaptogens in creating drinks that feel sophisticated and supportive Why “less alcohol” does not have to mean “less fun” How J.W.'s own drinking habits pushed him to rethink what he wanted alcohol to do in his life Key TakeawaysJ.W. explains that people do not need alcohol to have fun—they need connection, intention, and something that genuinely feels good in their body. That idea aligns beautifully with the Alcohol Minimalist philosophy: creating a relationship with alcohol that is conscious, peaceful, and free from all-or-nothing thinking. This episode also highlights an important mindset shift: non-alcoholic drinks are not “less than.” They can be crafted, complex, beautiful, and worthy of the same appreciation people often reserve for alcoholic beverages. Molly and J.W. discuss how that reframe opens up more options for people who want to drink less without feeling like they are missing out. And finally, J.W.'s story is a reminder that change often starts with curiosity. What began as a personal effort to cut back and reset his tolerance eventually became a company built to help others find more freedom and flexibility in how they drink. About the GuestJ.W. Wiseman is the founder of Curious Elixirs, one of the early leaders in the non-alcoholic cocktail movement. Before launching the company in 2015, he worked across media, marketing, and hospitality, including roles with NBC, Broadway, Thrillist, and Skillshare, before founding his own agency, Good Business. Mentioned in This EpisodeCurious Elixirs The “sober curious” movement Functional herbs and adaptogens Curious Red The Curious Elixirs flavor quiz Molly's idea of living “mostly alcohol-free” Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. ★ Support this podcast ★

Since my time in graduate school for somatic psychotherapy, I have shared with anyone who would listen about the connection between somatics and nutrition. It has felt absurd to me that food was never talked about in my somatic studies. In my PhD interview, I passionately shared that I believe there is a need to bring the field of nutrition into somatics. This has been a 20-year journey where I'm seeing that others have also been trying to combine these fields. Joy is easy to talk about when life is smooth and brutally hard to reach when your identity breaks, your plans collapse, or fear takes over. Sean Fargo sits down with leadership coach and author Jan Hoth, the “Joy Alchemist,” to get specific about what joy really is and what it is not. Visit Jan's website: https://www.janjoymentor.com/We draw a clear line between fleeting happiness and joy as a steady state of being that can hold grief, anger, and uncertainty without pretending they aren't there.Jan shares her own turning point from teenage depression after an injury ended her swimmer identity, and how an audacious opportunity cracked open a new future. From there we get practical: mindfulness as the gateway, “micro joy” habits you can use in minutes, and her unforgettable “Fruit Loop moment” story from a children's hospital that became a repeatable tool for resilience. If you've felt stuck after divorce, job loss, burnout, retirement, or a health scare, this conversation offers grounded steps for finding possibility again. We also go straight at toxic positivity, the signs you're forcing a smile, and why the fastest route back to authentic joy sometimes starts with letting yourself feel the full depth of the moment. For entrepreneurs, managers, community leaders, and therapists, we explore joy as a leadership superpower that improves creativity, decisiveness, and team culture without guilt or bypassing. Why do we keep chasing happiness in ways that don't actually work?Dr. Laurie Santos is a cognitive scientist and professor of psychology at Yale, where she created the most popular course in the university's 300-year history, the Science of Well-Being. Since then, that course has reached millions of people around the world, and her podcast, The Happiness Lab, has become one of the most trusted resources on the science of living well. In this conversation with Dr. Michael Gervais, Laurie pulls back the curtain on why our minds so reliably get happiness wrong, and what we can do about it.The conversation starts with a sobering look at the student mental health crisis: more than 40% of college students report being too depressed to function, more than 60% report overwhelming anxiety. Laurie saw it firsthand at Yale, and it launched her on a mission to translate happiness research into practical tools that actually work. She explains why the things we predict will make us happy – more money, more success, more achievement – don't deliver the boost we expect, or the lasting satisfaction we hope for. She digs into the science of social comparison, why our brains default to the comparisons that make us feel worse, and why even the most high-performing people can feel inexplicably stuck. And she outlines the evidence-based habits, social connection, mindset shifts, emotional awareness, that actually move the needle. In this conversation, we explore:Why our minds are wired to predict happiness incorrectlyHow social comparison shapes our experience of achievement, and rarely in our favorWhat the research actually says about money, status, and wellbeingWhy social connection is the most underrated predictor of happinessHow to work with your emotions rather than suppress or spiral into themWhat leaders and organizations can do to build genuinely happier, higher-performing teamsEveryone wants to live a good life. This is one of those rare conversations that might genuinely help you do it.____________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors!
