The episode revisits the Christmas Truce of 1914 during World War I, when tens of thousands of British and German soldiers laid down their weapons, crossed no man's land, sang carols, shared food, cut each other's hair, and even played soccer. Bryan recounts firsthand accounts from soldiers who witnessed this spontaneous peace, as well as the outrage of generals who later ordered the fighting to resume. Bryan then shares a lesser-known but deeply moving story from Christmas Eve 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. In a small cabin in the Hürtgen Forest, a German mother sheltered wounded American soldiers and later welcomed lost German troops, insisting on peace, prayer, and compassion inside her home. Decades later, her son's search for the Americans she saved leads to a reunion that confirms her courage preserved life and left a lasting legacy of goodwill. The officials blamed defective wiring although lights were still burning after the fire started. The official report stated that the children died in the fire. However no bones were found in the residue and there was no smell of burning flesh during or after the fire. What was the motive of the law officers involved? What did they have to gain by making us suffer all of these years of injustice? It's Christmas Eve. A holiday celebrated by 2.4 billion people around the world, which centers on a 2,000-year-old story about a Jewish man born in Bethlehem who became a rabbi, who the Romans would later execute in Jerusalem.  But what most people don't know is that the first people who believed in Jesus did not think they were starting a new religion. They were a small group of Jews who thought of themselves as history's last generation, with Jesus as their Messiah. Of course, as we all know now, they were not history's last generation. Instead, they became history's first Christians. How did that happen? When did Christ's followers begin to see themselves as distinct and separate from Judaism? Why did some Jews refuse to accept Christ as the Messiah? And how was that refusal, and the anti-Judaism of the early Christians, directly connected to the antisemitism burning across the globe today? These first few centuries are essential for understanding not just Christianity and Judaism, but the way ideas spread, and why many of the ideas of this period—good ones, and also some very bad ones—still persist in our world today. My guest today, Paula Fredriksen, has spent her career studying this period of history. She is one of the world's leading scholars of early Christianity and the author of many books including: When Christians Were Jews: The First Generation, Paul: The Pagans' Apostle, and Ancient Christianities: The First Five Hundred Years.  Paula was born in Rhode Island and now lives in Jerusalem, just 20 minutes from Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified.   This conversation is a Christmas special you won't want to miss. Erin admits that Nicolas has awakened something in her she didn't know was there.The next day at work, Kelly mistakenly believes she's being asked whether she wants to adopt Nicolas — and she says yes. In that moment, she realizes her fear has been keeping her from what she truly wants. The couple gets Nicolas back and begins preparing their home for the official home study.On Christmas Eve, they learn that the birth mother has contacted Betty and wants to meet them. Remain in the present – especially when spending time with your loved ones – while keeping a vision in mind for your longer-term future plans. Be intentional about your plans and actions today and timeline what you want to achieve in what time you have remaining. Communicate on a regular basis with your “team” (loved ones) about your financial goals, progress, and situation. We recommend scheduling a weekly Family Budget Meeting. Automate as many of your financial decisions as possible today so you never have to think about them again in the future. Commit to paying off that mortgage early, ramp up those retirement savings contributions, stack those Benjamins for your kids' college savings. Remember that time is the one commodity that's finite for all of us. Value your time and experiences while staying responsible to your present and future self.
