Third Place (Joint) LH(EW) Lewis Batch, Northwood HQ It is more than 40 years since the Falklands conflict. Evaluate the challenges the Royal Navy face if it was to engage in a non-UN/NATO supported conflict in the Southern hemisphere. Context On 05 April 1982 the aircraft carriers HMS HERMES, HMS INVINCIBLE and their escort vessels, sailed from Portsmouth for the South Atlantic as part of the UK governments response to the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands. Then, as would apply now, the UK was not afforded protection under NATO's Article 5 'collective self-defence' (valid only for territories north of the Tropic of Cancer) and a solely British Military operation was initiated. Given the need to carry an invasion force over some 8,000 miles, the Royal Navy (RN) was to act as the main military apparatus in the transportation of the invasion force south: this was codenamed OPERATION CORPORATE. Forty-one years later and Argentina has elected a new president in Javier Milie, who is keen to re-open questions over the future of the Falklands sovereignty. This, coupled with the RN's recovery from a period of austerity-driven defence cuts, provides comparisons which are eerily reminiscent of the state of the RN in 1982. It is therefore appropriate to discuss whether the RN in 2024 could replicate a similar response to that that was launched in 1982. To make fair assessment, the following areas will be discussed: political appetite (and foreign policy), fleet size, technology, defence procurement, as well as the UK's relationship with her allies and the role of overseas bases. Political Appetite The UK government does and continues to demonstrate its desire to play a global role, meeting its commitment to international partners and defending peace and stability. This is evident from the UK's leading role in both the training and delivery of equipment to Ukraine since 2022; the commitment through OPERATION PROSPERITY GUARDIAN to ensure freedom of navigation through areas littoral to Yemen; notwithstanding swift responses to the 2021 Kabul Airlift, the evacuation of UK nationals from Sudan in 2023 and most recently, the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Importantly, it was the release of the 2021 Integrated Review and Defence Command Paper which reiterated the appetite for 'global Britain'. This manifested itself in a commitment to respond to both concurrent and new and emerging threats, focussing largely on the following methods: the need for a more forward based Navy, the ability to deploy one functioning aircraft carrier and investment in future technology, such a direct energy weapons and artificial intelligence. In short, the UK has demonstrated it maintains the political will to remain a global power in protecting its interests at home and abroad. However, this has been conducted with ever stretching resources, most notably, fewer available capital ships and a creaking support structure. Fleet Size With it established that the UK has the political will power to react to a theoretical conflict in the southern hemisphere, the next area of discussion lays with the current RN footprint and whether there is appropriate number of capital ships, auxiliary ships and supply chain to support extended deployment at high readiness. If we compare the current RN fleet with that of the task force sent in 1982, we can see numbers are significantly lower and this has continued to decrease in size. The OPERATION CORPORATE task group comprised of 127 ships: 43 RN vessels, (2 aircraft carriers, 15 frigates, 6 destroyers, 2 LPD's and 6 submarines), 24 Sea Harrier and 22 Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). The 62 merchant vessels were British-registered vessels requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), otherwise known as 'Ships Taken Up From Trade' (STUFT). In contrast, the current RN in its totality encompasses 66 vessels, drastically reducing to 21 when listing only capital ships:11 frigates, 6 destroyers, 2 aircraft carriers, 2 LPDs an...

The arrival of the coronavirus last year brought worries of deep cuts in state aid, but Haverhill state Rep. Andy X. Vargas said the recently approved House spending plan neither cuts services nor raises taxes.The nearly $48 billion budget proposal is possible, Vargas said, because of strong state revenue collections, increased federal reimbursement and by using the state's rainy-day fund. Appearing on WHAV's live “Win for Breakfast” program Friday morning, Vargas also discussed specific benefits for Haverhill.“We're really excited because Haverhill is going to see a $1.6 million increase in Chapter 70 for our schools. It's also going to see a $400,000 increase in local aid, which is finding that the City of Haverhill could use for diverse purposes,” Vargas explained.He noted city government would also receive $125,000 in additional state help to pay the debt of the former city-owned Hale Hospital that the city owned for 70 years until selling it in 2001.In a separate statement, Vargas detailed Haverhill schools would receive a total of nearly $65 million in state aid. The spending plan also sets aside $40 million to help school districts whose fall enrollment drops because of COVID-19, bringing state reimbursements down as well. The city will also see $10.8 million in general local aid.The budget for the year beginning July 1 is not built on federal American Rescue Plan. Vargas notes the city will separately benefit from federal aid.“It's important for folks to know the American Rescue Plan, passed by Congress, led by Joe Biden, is going to provide the City of Haverhill with $30 million on the city side and the schools went a little bit over $20 million as well,” he said.Haverhill's private sector also benefits from special state payments, known as earmarks. Vargas said these include $50,000 for the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, $25,000 to the Haverhill High School's Violence Intervention and Prevention organization, $25,000 to establish a Haverhill branch of the Lowell-based Entrepreneurship for All and $25,000 for Creative Haverhill to work on city beautification and public art projects. Vargas elaborated on the beautification plan.“Beautify the overpasses where the train goes over downtown similar to the one that has been beautified by Creative Haverhill. We've got that nice ‘Welcome to Haverhill' sign in front of Stuft,” he said.Vargas also supported a $50,000 earmark for the Cogswell Art Space, South Main Street, filed by Rep. Auch Baden-Württembergs Ministerin für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Theresia Bauer sagte gegenüber der Kulturreporterin, dass sich das Land an die Empfehlung der Kommission halten werde. Das Bild wurde 1967 vom Maler selbst an die Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe gestiftet. Nun kündigten die Erben an, das Gemälde an das Virginia Museum of Fine Arts zu stiften.

Amerika verhält sich in Wechselwirkung mit China ebenfalls verhalten, die maßgeblichen Märkte machten Verluste. Die Aktien von United Airlines und American sind beide um mehr als 5% gefallen. Der EuroStoxx als Leitindex der Eurozone stieg um 1,13 Prozent auf. Die Papiere der Britischen Bank Virgin Money legten um 3,9% zu, nachdem die Bank erklärte, dass ihr Vorsitzender Jim Pettigrew bis September 2021 in Ruhestand gehen will. DAX steigt um 1,41% an der Spitze klettern die Wirecard Aktien um 4,5% auf den höchsten Stand seit Oktober.

Hey Gang!! Sprinklez presents our first episode of 2018, and this one is doozy! We have a new segment we call Dr. J. Recommends! My co-worker recommended two terrific shows that he and his wife love and you will too. First of we have the British murder mystery: THE FIVE (Netflix) which is a fun, suspenseful mystery, where a five year old disappeared twenty five years ago, after a police investigation a serial killer was caught and confessed to killing him. Fast forward to present day an one of the four friends is a police detective working on solving the murder of a woman where he collects DNA evidence when analyzed it matches the DNA of the missing five year old!!!! It's very clever and smart and surprising moving! Then we talk about the German show, DARK which is a Netflix original which is sort of a more serious Stranger Things mixed with Donny Darko. Its creepy and mysterious but the complex plot is very engaging as it is perplexing. Finally this episode's Tasty-Treat-Sensation is Taco Bell's XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito (Regular Chicken), Nachos and Cheese and Mountain Dew's Baja Blast-which is a mouth watering combo or salty sweet combination you are sure to love at 2am in the morning!

An Impromptu Interview with the New Chefs at Stuft, the New Kitchen at the Regal Beagle

 Back to Taco Bell, we feel that we may have endangered Triple Trek.  We are apparently correct as this becomes our crowning failure of the BQ3.  Ben is confounded by his attraction to this burrito.  Daniel crows a lot about recording on the road.  Without realizing it we have a discussion about what has been best on BQ3, perhaps wrapping the Trek unknowingly.  Then we make a lot of plans that were never realized, like investigating a possible burrito from Buffalo Wild Wings.Ingredients: "The XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito is our biggest burrito yet, STUFT full of grilled, marinated steak, a three cheese blend, flavorful seasoned rice, hearty beans, reduced-fat sour cream, chunky guacamole, avocado ranch and fiesta salsa, wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla." Ratings:Ben - King Kong. Taco Bell trek gets Stuft! That's right, 'Stuft!'  It's how you know they're hip.  This burrito is Taco Bell's second highest in caloric content, bested only by the beef version of the Grilled Stuft Burrito.  Daniel's go-to Taco Bell food, his opinion was preordained.  Ben eats it and hates that he likes it, kind of like a baby who's mad at his butthole because it hurts when he poops.  The idea of the Burrito Casserole raises it's ugly head again, this time horrifically solidified a bit more.  It cometh, the Burrsserole, like some herald of Armageddon.Ingredients - "A large, warm, soft flour tortilla wrapped around grilled, marinated all-white-meat chicken, hearty beans, seasoned rice, a blend of three real cheeses – cheddar, pepper jack and mozzarella – creamy pepper jack sauce, and fiesta salsa, then grilled to perfection."Ratings:Ben - Getting a 1% raise.  At first it seems like it sucks, but then, it's a raise, but still kind of sad.  This is really a good thing?  But I'm angry that I'm happy at it.Daniel - Skunk Ape.
