Break 1: Kia Mall of GA STORY 1: GBI arrests Braselton police chief on stalking charge Braselton Police Chief Michael Steffman is out of a job—and facing serious charges. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested the 49-year-old on allegations of stalking, harassment, and misconduct, including misuse of license plate readers. According to the GBI, Steffman used the automated systems to stalk and harass multiple people. He’s now charged with stalking, harassing communications, violating his oath, and several counts of misusing the plate recognition system. Steffman resigned and retired after his arrest, though the city called it “personal reasons.” This comes just seven months after he was sworn in as permanent chief, following 20 years with the department. Braselton has named Zack Tiller as interim chief while the case moves forward. The GBI is asking anyone with information to contact their Athens office or submit tips anonymously online. STORY 2: Scarlett Rigsby’s nonprofit quietly battles weekend hunger for Gwinnett schoolchildren After nearly 20 years at the Gwinnett YMCA, Scarlett Rigsby’s job disappeared during the 2008 economic crash. She thought her next step would be another nonprofit—her work felt like a calling, a ministry. But starting her own? That wasn’t on the radar. Yet in 2010, with her Golden Retriever, Truth, by her side, she launched Nothing but the Truth in Lawrenceville. What began with feeding 15 kids at one school has grown into a lifeline for nearly 1,300 students across 50 schools, sending weekend food home in backpacks. “People used to say, ‘There aren’t hungry kids in Gwinnett.’ But there are,” Rigsby said. The nonprofit’s reach has expanded—reading programs, English classes, even “swag bags” for girls without period supplies. “It’s about meeting people where they are,” she said. Fifteen years in, Rigsby dreams of the next generation taking over. STORY 3: Mountain View naming recognition wall for former coach killed in Apalachee shooting One of the four victims of the tragic Apalachee High School shooting will soon be honored with a permanent memorial at the Gwinnett County school where he spent a decade teaching and coaching. The Gwinnett County Board of Education voted to name Mountain View High School’s track recognition wall after Ricky Aspinwall—known to students as “Coach A.” Aspinwall, who taught math and coached football and track, was killed in the September 2024 shooting in Barrow County. “Coach A left a legacy of integrity, service, and compassion,” wrote Mountain View School Council President Gail Devers. “Our community was deeply impacted by his loss.” The wall, which will display track records, will be a visible tribute during school events. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Man convicted of killing woman on Stone Mountain Highway A Stone Mountain man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal murder of Breana Marie Rogers, a 33-year-old woman who had been living with him at a south Gwinnett hotel. Edward Rodley Smith Jr., 39, was convicted of malice murder and sentenced to life without parole for the October 2022 killing. “Breana tried to escape, and he hunted her down,” said Gwinnett DA Patsy Austin-Gatson. “We hope this verdict brings her family some measure of justice.” Rogers was shot four times—three in the back, once in the head—after fleeing their hotel. Witnesses reported hearing her yell, “I’m tired of this,” before Smith chased her down. Smith claimed self-defense, but the jury didn’t buy it, deliberating just 90 minutes before convicting him. STORY 5: Lawmakers consider ways to reduce chronic absenteeism Georgia students skipping too much school might soon face some tough consequences—like losing their driver’s licenses or getting benched from sports teams. That’s one of several ideas floated by a legislative study committee tackling the state’s growing absenteeism problem, which has only worsened since COVID. “It’s about the kids, but it’s also about Georgia’s economy and workforce,” said Sen. John F. Kennedy, who chaired the committee. The group’s recommendations include harsher penalties for chronic absences, but also more support for struggling families—like providing hygiene products, clothing, and even washing machines. One nonprofit leader shared heartbreaking stories: kids skipping school because they’re embarrassed by dirty clothes or the smell of bed-wetting siblings. Lawmakers also discussed banning cellphones in high schools and expanding mental health services, though the $34 million price tag for elementary school programs left some stunned. Verses 1-27 of Nehemiah 10 tell the names of those who signed the covenant. Verses 28-39 outline the responsibilities and obligations of the covenant. The first of the obligations was to not marry uncovenanted wives (i.e. those of different beliefs to those taught in His Law by the God of Israel).Responsibility 2 was to observe the Sabbath by preventing the buying and selling of goods. The third necessity was to pay their tithes and offerings for the house of God. And finally come together for the three principal feasts to rejoice in their God; and with those of like precious faith.Amos 2 commenced with judgments on Israel's neighbours for their sins and now from verses 6-16 the prophet states the sins for which Israel will be chastised. Firstly, those whose covetousness and callousness knows no limits; secondly, those whose uncontrolled sexual appetites were insatiable; thirdly, their boastfulness - the word Amorite comes from the Hebrew "amor" meaning mouth; fourthly, their corrupting of God's laws i.e. giving the Nazarites wine to drink. And so "as they had sown, so they would reap" and not be able to resist the severe coming judgment.1 Timothy 4 commences with signposts which mark out the coming departure from true teachings - 1) a belief in evil and deceitful spirits; 2) a celibate clergy forbidden marriage; 3) the refraining from eating certain foods e.g. meat on Fridays and during Lent leading up to Easter - all foods are for our eating as long as we have offered a prayer of thanksgiving before eating. In verses 6-10 we have the third faithful saying, "bodily exercise is of some value, but godliness (Greek "eusebia" - good, or well worship) is profitable in every way, benefiting present daily life, and offering the hope of eternal life in the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ". It is essential that believers be reminded of the necessity to be pure in thought, word and action. Such diligence will save both the teacher and the hearer alike. In chapter 5 we are told the type of respect to be shown to elderly believers. Next follows instructions on the proper treatment of widows. It tells families to show their commitment and care for the widows before requesting aid from the ecclesia. However, widows whose faith and actions stand as a witness to their commitment to Christ Jesus and His Father should be supported in their needs. Older members of the flock of God who have diligently proclaimed the Word of God must be honoured (compare Hebrews 13verses7, 17). Those whose words and actions show a failure to continue in the beliefs and behaviour of the Truth are to be openly rebuked. Be careful in the choice of those commissioned to faithful service. Timothy should drink wine moderately for reasons of health. Sometimes the faithfulness of some believers is evident; and sometimes the wrongdoing of believers is seen. But not always. "No sense embarrassing your dad if he's uncomfortable with us knowing any of this, any more than he has too." I nodded my head in agreement, once more looking towards mom. "You don't think I'm some kind of a whore or anything do you honey?" She asked worriedly. "Of course not!" I exclaimed. "No more than Cathy is, or even me for that matter. It's not like you get paid money to go to those parties now do you?" "Well no...but, you saw the pictures." I certainly couldn't deny that, once more nodding my head. "Mom, listen. Think about it. Cathy told you about us too right?" Now it was mom's turn to nod. "Well? We're not exactly in a position to be casting judgment on you then are we? To be honest mom, we didn't see anything in those photos that we haven't participated in ourselves." Seeing the look on mom's face at that moment told me I'd just painted her a pretty vivid picture. She seemed to be looking far off for a moment, so I could only imagine. "So you'd be okay if we..." "Continued?" Cathy finished for her. "Of course we would, mom!" She half laughed, pulling mom close to her for a welcoming, reassuring hug. "Obviously things have changed since the two of you moved here. And by the looks of it, for the better too. Dave and I can both see that you're both happier, even healthier, and doing better. So if having a little naughty decadent fun from time to time is causing that, we're certainly all for it? Aren't we honey?" I think I was grinning like a Cheshire cat, but I wasn't about to explain why. Up until that very moment, I hadn't noticed that the robe Cathy had on, had parted in front, so that now most of her left tit was exposed. It was in fact resting against mom's arm, though she either didn't seem to notice it, or care that it was. "Yeah...of course," I finally managed. Feeling my cock starting to stiffen a little was a good indication it was time for me to make a departure here. The last thing I wanted to do was try and explain why it was...to either one of them. “We love this community, and its emphasis” mom said. It's called Virilità Ricorrere, for a reason. We weren't big on dining out when I was growing up. Truth is, we couldn't really afford to. With four kids, a mortgage, and decent cooking skills themselves, my parents didn't really buy food. They bought groceries and the odd few rounds of fish and chips on the beach, but apart from that almost everything we ate was prepared in the kitchen at home. That being said, every now and then there'd be a special occasion. Every now and then we'd make our way into the city and Christchurch's historic Arts Centre, where each of us would line up for a lunchtime treat. Back then, Dimitris served souvlakis from a little caravan, tucked into a little corner next to the old gothic revival buildings. Whenever you'd pass by, there would be a little group of people milling about and waiting for their order to be prepared. On a really busy day, the owner, Dimitris Merentitis, would have someone else working with him as he made his way through the orders. You could choose between single, double, or triple meat. Lamb, chicken, or falafel. The Tames always had the same thing: lamb souvlakis with a token bit of salad, and a hearty drenching of beautiful, garlicky, tzatziki sauce. As you stood there waiting, you'd try and size up the people around you to work out how many orders would have to be completed and checked off before yours would be up. I remember being frustrated when someone would appear from a shop or a stall nearby, having ducked away for a few minutes while their order was prepared. Dammit, I'd think, surely, I'm next. I don't know about you, call me a heathen, but as far as I'm concerned there are few gastronomical combinations quite so glorious as hot meat in hot bread. It's about as simple as it gets, pulled straight off the sizzling grill, wrapped in newsprint and passed into your hungry hands. The bread at Dimitris' souvlakis was always so pillowy and soft. You'd navigate the first few bites with relative dignity, but by the time you got down to the last fistful of souvlaki, there was no room for quaint niceties like plastic cutlery. Everything would be soaking with meat juice and sauce. Heaven is a place on Earth. It's funny how people will always find and celebrate good food. Looking back, I recall the point when we crossed the threshold, in our family. Even though as teenagers our friends were always asking their parents to go to McDonalds or KFC, when each of us had a birthday roll around, we'd ask to go to Dimitris. And it turns out we weren't the only ones. We might have thought it was a family secret, but it was a family secret that was apparently shared by half the people in Canterbury. After years and years and years of serving up how every many million souvlakis, Dimitris has built his operation into a gastronomic institution. From the little stand in the Arts Centre to his Greek restaurant and prominent spot in Riverside Market today, Dimitris is a dining destination that I'd argue now ranks among New Zealand's best-loved spots: Queenstown has Fergburger. Wellington has Fidel's. Christchurch has Dimitris. This weekend, Dimitris celebrates forty years of operations in the Garden City. Forty years. So much of the city has changed in that time. The CBD looks completely different. Entire neighbourhoods have gone. But some things have never changed. Lamb. Bread. Lashings of tzatziki. Family and friendship are among God’s greatest gifts, yet they can also be some of life’s hardest places to navigate. I'm struggling to even summarise this episode because of the frequency I experienced speaking with Richard Rudd.
