00:45 The debate around NanotyrannusA hotly debated species of dinosaur, assumed by many to be a juvenile T. rex, is actually a separate species, according to new research. Nanotyrannus was a dinosaur anatomically similar to T. rex, but about a tenth of the size, leading many to argue it was a young version of the iconic species. However, examination of the limb bones of a well-preserved Nanotyrannus fossil suggests it was close to finishing its growth and so would never become as large as a T. rex, leading the authors to argue that it is, in fact, a different species.Research Article: Zanno and NapoliNews and Views: T. rex debate settled: contested fossils are smaller rival species, not juvenilesNews: ‘Teenage T. rex' fossil is actually a different speciesVideo: Hotly debated dinosaur is not a tiny T. rex after all08:46 Research HighlightsAn artificial ‘neuron' could pave the way to build a brain-inspired computer — plus, how bats buck the trend by hunting prey their own size.Research Highlight: Artificial brains with less drainResearch Highlight: By the time you hear these bats, it's too late11:19 A less invasive way to prevent breast cancerAn ‘anti-hormone' therapy has shown promise in halting the onset of hallmarks associated with breast cancer, in a small trial. Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women worldwide, but preventative measures, such as mastectomies, are invasive. A new study examined the efficacy of a treatment that blocks progesterone, a hormone thought to play an important role in breast cancer progression. The therapy reduced both specific clinical markers of breast cancer and the number of cells that can become cancerous. Larger, longer trials are needed to show that this treatment could ultimately become part of a breast cancer prevention strategy, but the team think that this work shows the promise of this approach.Research Article: Simões et al.18:41 Briefing ChatA new approach to speed up CRIPSR therapies reaching clinical trials, and how vocal cords could be healed using a tiny 3D printer.Nature: Personalized gene editing helped one baby: can it be rolled out widely?Nature: World's smallest 3D bioprinter could rebuild tissue during surgerySubscribe to Nature Briefing, an unmissable daily round-up of science news, opinion and analysis free in your inbox every weekday. The Bengals defense is so bad that fans are actually starting to turn on Joe Burrow, all because Joe Flacco is balling out. We talk about how fast Cincinnati could turn Burrow into the next Carson Palmer if this keeps up. Mookie hijacks the show more than once, first by traumatizing everyone while breaking down Jayden Daniels' injury, then by repeatedly forcing in his NCAA Dynasty highlights and replaying ScottSki45's stat of the day. Tom Brady casually dropped that his new dog is a clone of the one he had with Gisele, the NFL Trade Deadline was a dud, and the first College Football Playoff poll dropped while we were live. Auburn tipped off Hugh Freeze's firing by canceling his usual Sunday tee time. Meanwhile, college programs have now passed $1 billion in coach buyouts since the CFP started...and Congress is talking about salary caps. Then we dive into the World Series: one of the best we've seen? We debate the defining moment: • Ground rule double in Game 6 • Rojas to Smith at the plate • Pages crashing into Hernandez for the catch to force extras Plus Sip/Chug/Drainpour for the worst series-losing moments ever, the fan who brought a spare ball to fake a throwback and now wants $2.5M for a pair of Game 7 homers, college basketball is back, a women's player goes viral for point 67, flopped injury dunks, and more chaos to close it out. Send us a textWhat if your dreams aren't random—they're early drafts of your future? We dive into the strange clarity that images bring, tracing a path from Christopher Nolan's Inception to the enduring lessons of Joseph and Daniel to show how imagination can become logistics, policy, and lived change. We start with the cinematic—why layered dream states, kicks, and totems mirror how ideas stack inside us—and shift to the practical anchors that keep us steady: journaling details the moment we wake, testing symbols across time, and using small, reversible experiments to validate meaning. Then we walk through two timeless case studies. Joseph reads a dream not as poetry but as a plan, translating symbols into storage, strategy, and survival across seven-year cycles. Daniel faces a harder brief—a king forgets his dream—yet recovers both the image and the implication, proving that patience, prayer, and pattern recognition can turn mystery into governance.Along the way, we challenge a few myths. No, other people cannot kill a well-stewarded dream, though careless sharing can slow momentum. Yes, troubling dreams can be signals to prepare, set boundaries, and build competence so opportunity doesn't outrun your skill. And most of all, no meaningful dream is purely personal; it touches families, teams, cities. We frame dreams as stacked pages—compressed futures seeking entry into time and space—and outline a simple workflow: record the image, interpret with wisdom, plan in phases, and act with integrity. If you're ready to treat your imagination like a working tool, this conversation offers methods you can use today—clear questions to ask, habits that sharpen interpretation, and steps that move a vision from 2D image to 3D impact. Send us a textReady for a clearer path through post-frame and metal buildings? We dig into what actually builds trust—real accreditation, transparent design tools, and partnerships you can visit, walk, and verify. Fresh from a plant tour at Graber Post and gearing up for the NFBA Conference, we map out how dealers can stay indispensable while manufacturers inch toward direct sales. We start with the practical: NFBA dates, hotel tips, and why the association's classes and accreditation raise the bar for pole barns. Then we get hands-on. SmartBuild lets us design to the screw so change orders don't derail budgets, and IdeaRoom brings customers into the 3D process without confusing the scope. Watching trusses move from pre-cut lumber to finished assemblies inside a clean, organized facility made one point impossible to miss—quality is a system. When your operations, subs, and suppliers are aligned, turnkey stops being a promise and becomes the only way you work.We also face the hard truths. In a market where four quotes cluster around 20k and one outlier dangles 16.5k, the risk isn't just price—it's lost time, weak engineering, and vanished refunds. That's why we push for standards in metal buildings and sheds, similar to what NFBA has done for post-frame. Until a strong association exists, dealers must self-govern with clear scopes, milestone payments, documented engineering, and consistent updates. Pair that with disciplined geography, vetted subs, and SEO that brings in qualified buyers, and you've got an engine that survives manufacturer shifts.Along the way we share new partnerships sparked at trade shows, our expanding content plans, and a few personal notes on community work and staying focused through slow season. If you sell sheds, carports, or pole barns, this is a roadmap for 2026: get accredited where possible, design transparently, manage projects tightly, and build alliances that last. Enjoy the ride, then help us raise the standard across the industry. For more information or to know more about the Shed Geek Podcast visit us at our website.Would you like to receive our weekly newsletter?  Sign up here.Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube at the handle @shedgeekpodcast.To be a guest on the Shed Geek Podcast visit our website and fill out the "Contact Us" form.To suggest show topics or ask questions you want answered email us at info@shedgeek.com.This episodes Sponsors:Studio Sponsor: J Money LLCSolar Blaster

Have you thought about investing into space? Mark Boggett, CEO of Seraphim, shares the investment opportunities in the rapidly expanding space industry. He explains how innovations led by SpaceX dramatically lowered launch costs and increased access to space, catalyzing growth in satellite constellations and data-driven applications for defense, climate, and communications. He emphasizes that near-term investment potential lies in defense and climate-related uses of satellite data, rather than speculative ventures like space travel or asteroid mining. He also highlights the growing importance of sustainability, debris management, and more. We discuss... Mark Boggett is a career technology investor who founded Seraphim Space, the world's first space-focused investment fund. Seraphim Space operates a global accelerator, a private venture fund, and a publicly listed growth fund on the London Stock Exchange. Boggett shifted focus to space investing after recognizing how technologies like AI, telecommunications, and 3D printing were transforming the sector. SpaceX revolutionized space access by reducing launch costs from $86,000 to $1,000 per kilogram and dramatically increasing launch frequency. Smaller, cheaper satellites now enable massive constellations that provide real-time Earth observation and global connectivity. Investment opportunities in space fall into three categories: upstream (launch and satellites), downstream (data and applications), and in-space (future lunar and interplanetary activities). The most investable areas today are defense and climate-related satellite data applications rather than speculative space travel or mining. The falling cost of launch is paving the way for large-scale space infrastructure, including future data centers powered by solar energy. Space debris is an emerging challenge, driving new industries focused on monitoring, avoiding, and removing defunct satellites. Regulatory changes now require satellite operators to deorbit defunct satellites within five years, accelerating growth in orbital cleanup services. Defense is a major driver of demand for satellite technology in intelligence, communications, navigation, and asset protection. The "in-space" category includes lunar landers, space stations, and eventual habitation or mining ventures, though these remain long-term prospects. NASA's new funding model relies on private companies like Axiom Space and Voyager to build commercial space stations. Boggett concludes that while long-term prospects like lunar mining are exciting, the current trillion-dollar opportunity lies in satellites, data, and communication serving Earth-based customers. Arun discussed their stem cell research initiatives, particularly the creation of 3D heart tissue organoids grown in microgravity on the ISS, and explained their approach to training astronauts and conducting space-based medical research. The conversation covered the potential of AI and telemedicine in space missions, regulatory challenges in stem cell research, and the future opportunities presented by commercial space stations for conducting biomedical research. David and Arun were joined by participant Dr. Sherry Bell.Detailed Summary:David and Dr. Sherry Bell discussed the establishment of the Center for Space Medicine Research at Cedars-Sinai, led by Arun. Arun confirmed the center's functionality and its institutional support, emphasizing its research and educational components. After Arun was welcomed back to The Space Show to discuss Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's new Space Medicine Research Center. Arun explained that the center, established about a year ago, builds on their 10 years of work in stem cell and biomanufacturing research, including 8 missions to the ISS. He noted that the center has both research and educational components, offering courses in space medicine and biosciences as part of their master's and PhD programs. Arun emphasized their institutional support and goal to become an academic partner for the growing private space industry in Los Angeles.Arun discussed Cedars' expansion beyond cardiovascular focus to broader biomanufacturing and space research, with plans to establish a clinical arm leveraging their hospital's expertise. He mentioned ongoing conversations with local space industry players in LA, though details are not yet public. Arun also outlined their vision for a comprehensive space medicine program, including pre-flight workups, in-flight diagnostics, and post-flight checkups, while acknowledging the need for space medical training for their network of providers.Arun further discussed his research on 3D heart tissue, or cardiac organoids, created from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). He explained that these tissues are grown in microgravity on the ISS, as microgravity may improve their growth compared to simulated microgravity on Earth. Arun clarified that the iPSCs and necessary chemicals were launched on SpaceX 33 in August and are now orbiting Earth. David inquired about astronaut training, and Arun explained that they work with engineers and partners like BioServe Space Technologies to train astronauts, as most are not life scientists. Arun expressed a desire for more direct communication with astronauts in the future. The discussion then focused on stem cell research and space medicine training. Arun explained that stem cells are sourced from de-identified donor samples at Cedars-Sinai, with consent for medical research use. The long-term goal is to create patient-specific bioengineered organs, starting with heart tissues, though this remains an area of ongoing research. Arun clarified that the initial training program will focus on biosciences for research scientists, with plans to expand to clinical training in the future.Arun did talk about the potential of AI and telemedicine in supporting deep space missions, emphasizing the value of human-focused research over animal studies. He clarified that his lab uses patient-specific stem cell models, focusing on human biology, and does not work with embryonic stem cells. Arun also addressed the cost and funding challenges of conducting research in space, mentioning partnerships with government agencies and the need to explore alternative funding sources for future collaborations. David inquired about simulating microgravity studies, to which Arun explained that while some ground-based simulations exist, they do not perfectly replicate the conditions of true space microgravity.Arun explained that the stem cell research at Cedars Space Lab involves creating three-dimensional organoids to study human biology and potentially identify new drugs, but emphasized that these cells cannot be transplanted back into people due to ethical and regulatory constraints. He clarified that the research is outcome-oriented, focusing on whether stem cells can be improved in space, with the goal of creating better models for understanding heart development and drug efficacy. David raised concerns about potential regulatory differences between countries, particularly regarding stem cell research, and Arun acknowledged that while the US has strict guidelines, some international research may go unpublished, making it difficult to track all ongoing work in this field.Arun discussed his work as a stem cell biologist and highlighted the potential of space biology research, mentioning a recent publication by UC San Diego on growing cancer cells in space. He expressed concerns about the transition from the ISS to commercial space stations, acknowledging the ISS's valuable contributions to research but seeing an opportunity for the commercial industry to fill the gap. Arun also considered the possibility of conducting research on a commercial space station, emphasizing the potential for more biomedical researchers in space and the possibility of accelerated training in a private space capacity. He expressed interest in the idea of conducting his own research on a private space station, such as SpaceX's Starship, and noted the importance of access and opportunities for further research.Arun discussed the differences between microgravity and partial gravity environments in space, highlighting the potential for developing unique therapeutic options that may only be applicable in space. He explained that while some treatments could be brought back to Earth, others might require patients to travel to space for treatment. Arun also touched on the current state of stem cell research, including clinical trials for various applications, and expressed optimism about future advancements in bioprinting and organoid manufacturing in space. He emphasized the importance of personalized medicine using patient-specific stem cells and encouraged continued interest in both stem cell and space biology research.Be sure to see the video of this program at doctorspace.substack.com.Special thanks to our sponsors:Northrup Grumman, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. Originally loaded October 13th, reloaded October 31st. Jeffrey Mosher welcomes back Pavan Muzumdar, Chief Operating Officer for Automation Alley & Project DIAMOnD CEO, Troy, MI, for a Project DIAMOnD Marketplace discussion. There were several questions Jeffrey wanted to find out from Pavan in this conversation: 1. The big picture: Pavan, for those who may not be familiar, in a few sentences can you explain what Project DIAMOnD is and how it's changing the way manufacturing happens here in Michigan? 2. From network to marketplace: Automation Alley recently launched the Project DIAMOnD Marketplace. Tell us what this new peer-to-peer platform does and why it's such a major milestone for distributed manufacturing. 3. Impact so far: The Project DIAMOnD network has already completed more than 50,000 3D print jobs. What kinds of parts are being produced, and what does that volume tell us about the potential of this model? 4. Empowering small manufacturers: A big part of Project DIAMOnD's mission is giving small and medium-sized manufacturers access to digital transformation technology. How does the marketplace make it easier for those smaller companies to compete, even if they don't own a 3D printer themselves? 5. Security and collaboration: You've emphasized that the marketplace protects intellectual property while enabling collaboration across hundreds of Michigan manufacturers. How does that balance work in practice? 6. Michigan's leadership role: Governor Whitmer and multiple county executives have endorsed Project DIAMOnD's statewide expansion. Why is Michigan uniquely positioned to lead the country in distributed manufacturing? 7. Call to action – getting involved: For the businesses listening, whether they want to have parts printed or join the network – how can they get involved with the Project DIAMOnD Marketplace, and what kind of opportunities does it open up for them? Automation Alley's Project DIAMOnD Launches Peer-to-Peer Marketplace for Distributed 3D Printing The marketplace builds on the success of 50,000+ 3D print jobs, showcasing the power of distributed manufacturing in Michigan TROY, Mich. – Sept. 25, 2025 – Project DIAMOnD, the nation's largest distributed 3D printing network led by Automation Alley and funded by Oakland County, has launched its new additive manufacturing marketplace – a secure, peer-to-peer platform where companies can submit 3D printing jobs at scale, and participating small manufacturers across Michigan can fulfill those jobs collaboratively. How it works: Companies that want to print at scale via the Project DIAMOnD Marketplace can reach out to contact@projectdiamond.org. Manufacturers interested in joining the network to receive a free 3D printer and training can apply through the “Join” form at www.projectdiamond.org. The marketplace is designed to protect the intellectual property of designers while giving them access to the full power of the distributed network. Jobs can be produced at higher volumes and faster speeds without requiring companies to purchase their own equipment. In fact, designers don't need to own a 3D printer at all to benefit from the network. They can simply submit their designs and have them securely manufactured at scale by participating Project DIAMOnD members. About Project DIAMOnD Project DIAMOnD (Distributed Independent and Agile Manufacturing on Demand) is creating the nation's largest connected 3D printing network, enabling small and medium-sized manufacturers and tech companies to access Industry 4.0 tools, diversify production capabilities, and respond rapidly to market demands. Funded by Oakland County in Phase 2 and powered by Automation Alley, the program provides participating businesses with grant-funded 3D printers, training, and access to a secure digital marketplace for on-demand production.

I mean, of course we talked about C++. But only a little.  Jason recently published Programming Puzzles Big Book: 400 pages of fun for ages 7-99, a book of puzzles for the logically minded. It teaches programming concepts as engaging puzzles: recursion, binary, assembly, Lisp, regular expressions. You may not know what you are learning but you'll likely find you know a lot more about how computers work afterward.  For the puzzles, paper is better than electronic. But you can also get the electronic version on LeanPub (which is better if you like to get lost in Wikipedia links). This is not Jason's first puzzle book, he's made them for C++ Object Lifetime and Copy and Reference (see his Amazon and LeanPub author page for other books as well).  If you want to catch up on C++, check out C++ Weekly With Jason Turner - YouTube. In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Ian and I talk about how big baseball was in his life in his high school and early college years. He was a left-handed pitcher, which made him attractive to coaches. By the time he transferred to UC Berkeley, though, sports receded and academics took over. He played what's called club ball, which Ian explains is something between varsity high school-level and community college. At Berkeley, Ian majored in renewable energy, a topic that shows up in the art he does today. He minored in education, something that shows up in his coaching of kids these days. He lived in Berkeley while going to school there, and speaks to that experience. Ian moved back to The City after he graduated, in 2014. But, as he puts it, since then, he's "left and come back many times." First was Seattle for a summer. Then Portland for a year and a half. We go on a bit of a sidebar after I offer up my opinion that some folks in the Pacific Northwest can come across as friendly, but they can also be rather passive-aggressive. After Portland was New York City, where Ian lived for half a year. Then Nashville for three months. And after that, he got into a teaching program in Madrid, Spain, which I express my jealousy of. (Barcelona is one of my favorite places on Earth.) He was in Madrid right as the COVID pandemic hit, in fact. The teaching program he was in allowed him plenty of downtime—he worked essentially four days a week, four hours per day. And a lot of that time on his hands was filled with a rediscovery of doing art. His plan had been to leave at the end of a school year, and that happened to coincide with the onset of COVID. His return to his hometown, and his time here since 2020, has been spent trying to do art full-time. And that's where Ian's and my life intersect. It happened one day in the very location where we recorded this podcast: 540 Bar. Break Fake Rules was born when Ian lived in Spain. It started with stickers. He handed them out—to friends, to strangers. He came up with the phrase and liked it, among other reasons, for its openendedness. He feels "Break Fake Rules" requires participation, something he sees as going against the way technology is leading us. But BFR isn't the only artistic endeavor in Ian's life. Ian does a lot of collage work. Lately, he's been cutting up vinyl from discarded billboard signs. He'd tried working with paper and glue to make murals, but the elements always got the better of his outdoor art. Old billboard vinyl is the solution he's been looking for. Those of you who follow Storied:SF on Instagram might have recently noticed a few collaboration reels between us and Break Fake Rules. Ian approached me a couple months ago about being on a series he produces called "People Should Know," where someone—an artist, a small-business owner, a podcaster—comes on and speaks with a fencing-masked interviewer to talk about what they do and what folks should know about what they do. You can check out full-length videos of everyone who's been on People Should Know on the Break Fake Rules website. It was a lot of fun to do, so thanks, Ian! In asking Ian to let people know how to find him, we decided to start off with our favorite platform—in real life! He's currently selling furniture at Stuff by Luxe. He's got Break Fake Rules stuff there, too, as well as some of his 2D and 3D art. His website is BreakFakeRules.com. Find @breakfakerules and his personal account, @ianglues, on Instagram.

Today we have a bonus episode for you, featuring our very own Francis Lam. How We Survive is an award-winning podcast from Marketplace about the messy business of climate solutions. From the glitz and glam of Miami, to the punishing Arizona desert, to a sinking island that our national security depends on, every season takes listeners on an adventure. We're finding the innovative, surprising and occasionally disturbing ways that people are navigating solutions to a changing climate. In this episode of “How We Survive,” host Amy Scott is joined by “The Splendid Table” host Francis Lam for a cultivated meat taste test. Plus, Francis shares his go-to recipes for climate-friendly proteins.Deep in the halls of the engineering school at Columbia University, professor Hod Lipson and his former student Jonathan Blutinger are reimagining how meat is made. In 2022, they developed a device that maps the texture of meat.“It's a machine that can poke steak at a bunch of different points and create these high-fidelity texture maps and see more clearly, you know, the toughness of different parts,” explains Blutinger. Lipson adds, “we tried to capture quantitatively, how hard is it to cut it with a knife? How hard is it to poke it with a fork? How hard is it to chew?” They sold that device to a fake meat company, ReDefine Meat, which 3D prints steak. It was during this time that Blutinger came up with a framework for thinking about meat: The uncanny valley of meat. “The uncanny valley is, a thought that a Japanese researcher came up with years ago, where the closer we get to mimicking human likeness with robots, the more we tend to be irked by them,” explained Blutinger. He said the same phenomenon happens when we eat fake meat that's trying to look, taste and feel like the real thing.“People who are meat eaters are used to the texture, the feeling, the flavor, all the sensory aspects of any meat they've had from the hundreds of thousands of times they've tried it. So as soon as they try something that's trying to mimic that, they're extra cautious,” said Blutinger. We hear all the time that one of the best things we can do for the climate as individuals is eat less meat. But 3D printed meat alternatives are not on the market in the U.S. yet. So the “How We Survive” team got our hands on another new food tech that some argue could allow people to have their steak and eat it too: Cell cultivated meat (which is real meat grown from cells instead of living, breathing animals).Does cell cultivated meat pass the uncanny valley?
