The year was 2004. MakeMyTrip was a struggling 4-year old company and Deep Kalra, its founder, hadn't taken a salary for nearly 18 months and had exhausted all of his financial savings. His co-founders had already taken salary cuts ranging from 50-70%. That's when they got an offer from a much larger company to buy MakeMyTrip out. After discussing between themselves, they decided that they'd sell if the offer was $10 million. The first offer from the potential buyer was $5 million. Which Kalra refused, of course. Then the haggling started. Over a few hours and price inched up bit by bit to around $7 million. “And the meeting ended. And I was actually very relieved,” says Deep in episode 11 of First Principles.He says his single biggest advice to young founders is to “just hang in there and don't give up too early because so many businesses haven't seen the light of day because someone gave up too early.”MakeMyTrip went through long periods of struggle, often existential, before it became the online travel giant that it is today. When Dustin once transitioned to a corporate setting, he found himself in a cycle he didn't anticipate. Every day, it was nothing but Excel Sheets, paranoia, corporate drama, and all that's also common to military bureaucracy. The only difference this time? It's boring beyond belief. In this episode, Dustin talks about how he started his premium smoked cocktail kit company, how his prison transportation services business taught him how to 'never forget the journey,' as well as how lucrative a room-by-rent unit can possibly get with the right approach. About Dustin Baldwin: Together with a friend from the US Marine Corps, Dustin shared a love for bourbon, craft beer, and German Shepherds. After following similar paths obtaining their MBAs and a shared entrepreneurial drive, the two decided they wanted to start a business together. Dustin brought the idea of starting a company aimed at veterans and Old Fashioned drinkers to benefit wounded combat veterans with the sale of their products, cocktail smokers, and woods fuels. The name was thus born: "Smoked Fashion Co." Over the next couple of months, Dustin and his partner did a lot of brainstorming, built prototypes, and completed experiments. They found that the wood fuels they created enhanced the flavor of all drinks, including cocktails, red wines, and dark beers. The Smoked Fashion Co. vision was then formed. They would then become a company that features the best bartenders' smoked drink recipes and provide premium tools to make the best-smoked cocktails ever indulged. Imagine this. You are a Mexican chef and you have now joined a South Indian restaurant. Will you survive? Will you be able to thrive in the new company? On the same lines, how technical should you be to excel in a product management role sounds like a similar question. It all depends on the company and what they need. For example, if you applying for a role with Google, you are obviously expected to understand quite a bit of technology. More than most of us, actually ! But if you are applying for say a company like Salesforce, you are expected to know how to deal with multiple teams to how to engage with big customer accounts, to even how to up-sell. Let me share a simple evaluation matrix for you. If you are really good in technical knowledge and have a deep understanding of the same, go for companies that match your technology depth or even look at taking up the CPTO, that is Chief Product and Tech Officer route. But if you are low in technology depth, look for companies that are more process or operations-centric. For example, food delivery companies etc. Of course, within the same company there will be multiple roles that require different levels of technical depth, but here are a few basic technology pieces you should be in the know of.

Cédric Waldburger wagte einen Schritt, der für die meisten wohl unvorstellbar wäre – er kündigte vor zwei Jahren seine Wohnung in Zürich und beschloss von nun an nur noch mit so vielen Dingen zu leben, wie er in seinem Handgepäck Trolley mit sich tragen kann. So ist er heute mit seinen 64 Gegenständen auf der ganzen Welt zu Hause. Wieso er sich dazu entschloss diesen minimalistischen Lebensstil zu leben, habe ich im Gespräch mit ihm erfahren. In seinem Leben hat Cédric inzwischen bereits 57 Länder und 180 Städte bereist. Dabei verbringt er im Schnitt 3,7 Tage an einem Ort, bevor es wieder weiter geht. Das weiss der 30-jährige Unternehmer so genau, weil er alles, was er tut genauestens mit Apps trackt und in Excel Sheets festhält. Dabei verfolgt er nicht nur seine Reisen, sondern auchErnährung, Fitness oder Produktivität. Ich frage ihn, ob er sich denn selbst als einen Selbstoptimierer bezeichnen würde, was er ohne zu zögern mit einem enthusiastischen “Auf jeden Fall! Optimierung macht mir Spass”, bejaht. Mit dem Spass an Optimierung kommt wohl auch seine Passion für Startups, welchen er sich beruflich komplett verschrieben hat. Aktuell ist er an 15 jungen Unternehmen (Anm.: u.a. zählen koffer.ch, farmy.ch oder amorana.ch zählt dazu) in Zürich, Berlin, San Francisco und Miami als Gründer oder Investor beteiligt. Sein Hauptaugenmerk liegt zurzeit jedoch bei Dfinity, einem Blockchain basierten Cloud Computing-Projekt, wessen Ziel es ist einen dezentralen «Internet-Computer» zu entwickeln, der zur Cloud 3.0 wird. Dfinity ist als gemeinnützige Stiftung in Zug registriert und betreibt Forschungszentren in Palo Alto, Kalifornien und Deutschland. “Mich faszinieren Startups und die Geschichten dahinter – angefangen von der ersten Idee, die nachts in einer Bar zustande kommt, bis hin zum Erreichen der ersten Million. Ob damit der Umsatz, die Nutzerzahlen oder etwas anderes gemeint ist, spielt keine Rolle.” Als Unternehmer pendelt Cédric also immer zwischen den Orten, wo die Startups und Geschäftspartner, mit denen er arbeitet, situiert sind. Dabei jedes Mal mit viel Gepäck zu reisen, wäre denkbar unpraktisch.

This Podcast Is Episode Number 0233 And It Will Be About Contractors Struggle To Save Paperwork Needed For Taxes Tax Time! Corporate Income Tax Returns are due to the IRS by September 15th for S-Corp and LLC’s filing as an S-Corp Other types of corporations may be in a fiscal year with varied due dates. The only exception is any emergency extensions granted due to hurricanes (Harvey) or others. Personal Income Tax Returns are due to the IRS by October 15th which falls on the weekend and extended to Monday, October 16th. Keeping Paper Documents is necessary. Most contractors go from one extreme to the other. One extreme is saving everything for decades, and the other is tossing everything out. What To Save? What To Toss Out? We no longer need to print and save every document in file folders and keep adding new file cabinets. Happiness is every document that can be retrieved electronically at any time in the future. Sharie's Seven Paper Tips... Sharie’s Paper Tip 101 Save your receipts. If you have it in paper Get a file box and toss in all the gas, food, misc receipts paid by credit card.  Make a note on the receipt. You have the receipt for backup. I remember a story where someone needed to prove where they were. Charges on the credit card statement weren't enough.   Sharie’s Paper Tip 201 Make individual file folders for your state taxes, quarterly payroll reports, W-2’s, 1099’s. Other helpful folders are for your Bond, Liability Insurance, Worker’s Comp Insurance, Tools, Office Equipment and Cell Phones. All the statements you may need to reference over and over again and Receipts with extended warranties. Sharie’s Paper Tip 301 Print a copy of the Contract with your client (electronic signatures is fantastic) use a service that will time and date stamp in case you have an issues. Contracts are great in case of dispute. If all goes well, then The Signed Contract is just another piece of paper. I have heard stories of customers altering the contract, and the contractor did not double check. Magically things happen with software. Be sure what the client signs are the same copy of the contract you sent them and expected to be signed.   Sharie’s Paper Tip 401 Take credit cards. Use multiple services if that is what is available. If you use a service to send your contracts for signature and they have a Merchant Services; then sign up for it. Everything that happens seamlessly is the best. Approval Now + Authorization of Payment means you have real money (their money) to start the job.   OPM (means using Other Peoples Money – meaning you are using the Client’s money to start, continue and finish the job). Build in the Merchant Services Fee into your pricing. Cost of doing business.   Many contractors lost money on Groupon Coupons as customers only would do the One or Two Rooms as was prepaid on the coupon. (Example Carpet Cleaning – Drywall Patching)   Sharie’s Paper Tip 501 Use an invoice built on Excel. Word is pretty and is needed for all the descriptions. But to properly get the money, you expect to be paid Contractors need a form that adds up the money. Do not call all the payments a Job Deposit all the way from beginning to end. Call it a Statement, Progress Invoice, once work is approved it is no longer an Estimate or a Work Order. If you are in a sales tax state (Washington State) and need to collect sales tax; then be sure to add sales tax to every invoice. Customers have selective memory. Be sure to use “Plus Applicable Sales Tax” on the Estimate, Contact and all future billings. If sales tax increases you need to be able to pass the increases on to the customer.   Sharie’s Tip 601 Contractors who are doing remodel projects like to have job costing. To achieve basic job costing reports the accounting software needs to know what job the expenses should apply to. Many contractors will create a single file folder and drop all of the individual receipts in it.   This is handy if they have outsourced their bookkeeping and needed to give their bookkeeping to others to enter into an accounting software (QuickBooks) One simple way to add more detail for bookkeeping is to have accounts with the primary supplier. The person at the counter will ask you if you have a PO (Purchase Order). Purchase Order does not need to be complicated. Job Name and Job Address. Why both name and address? Because the name that pays the bill may not be the same as the Nick Name that you know your client as.    Examples: Bob, Bobby, Rob, Robby, Robert or Bill, Billy, Will, William may be the same person to you but not to the bank, credit card company.   Always exciting when Spouse, Family member or good friend helps pay your invoice. From Accounting side; next week, next month, next year will you remember which job the individual receipts are tied to?   Sharie’s Tip 701 For larger projects – file folder for each invoice especially if you are billing Time & Material or Cost Plus.   Keep good records; customers will randomly want to confirm the cost of some or all of the items. Does your customer want copies of all receipts?   Does your customer want to nit pick the price of each 2x4, cost of temp? Service and every dump fee?   Does your customer Agree Verbally To Change Orders but give excuses when asked to confirm changes on paper or by email?   Does your customer hide when you ask for payment?
