Should you narrate your own audiobook? In this episode, I talk with my friend and colleague Laura English, an audiobook narrator and producer who works closely with independent authors through Laura English Voice Over and Evergreen Studios.   We discuss why authors should consider an audiobook, how to practice and prepare, home recording versus studio recording, coaching and directing, proofing and pickups, technical specifications, distribution, and marketing. We also discuss three production paths: doing everything yourself, narrating your book while hiring help with post-production, or hiring a professional narrator.   Laura and I met during audiobook narration training in 2019. She was there when The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast was still an idea, which makes this conversation a full-circle moment for me. Laura encourages authors to think of audio as one more way for readers to experience a book. Some people prefer audiobooks, while "hybrid readers" move between print, ebook, and audio depending on where they are and what they are doing. Audiobooks also improve access for people who have low vision, dyslexia, limited literacy, difficulty holding a book, or other barriers to reading print.   Three Ways to Produce an Audiobook Laura and I discuss three possible paths: Do everything yourself. Learn the performance and technical sides of audiobook production, record the book, proof the audio, make corrections, edit, master, and upload the files. Narrate your own book and hire help. Perform the material yourself, then work with a proof-listener and audio engineer to create retail-ready files. Hire a professional narrator. Choose a narrator who understands your subject and can manage or support the production process.   The right choice depends on your time, budget, access to professional help, production goals, and interest in learning the technical side of narration.   Practice Before You Commit Laura recommends starting by reading a chapter aloud in a closet or another small, quiet room. Notice where you stumble, lose focus, rush, or misread a sentence. Then record three to five minutes on your phone and ask someone for honest feedback about your clarity, pacing, energy, and listener engagement.   The goal is to find your natural voice. Do not imitate another narrator or slip into an announcer voice. Talk to the listener instead of sounding as though you are reading at them. Nonfiction can be educational and entertaining without sounding patronizing.   Vocal stamina also varies. Laura recommends planning a short first session—perhaps 30 to 45 minutes of recording—before booking long blocks of studio time. Frequent breaks help protect both your voice and your body. Once production begins, try to record within a consistent period so your voice, recording environment, and delivery do not change noticeably between chapters.   Proofing, Pickups, and Technical Specifications Every narrator makes mistakes. A proofer follows the manuscript while listening to the recording and identifies skipped text, incorrect words, unclear delivery, unwanted noises, and pronunciation problems. Those corrections are organized into a pickup packet so the narrator can rerecord them.   Authors of medical or technical books should give the proof-listener and engineer a pronunciation guide. You know your subject, and a list of unfamiliar names and terms helps the production team distinguish a correct specialized pronunciation from an error.   After the pickups are recorded, an engineer inserts the corrections, edits the files, and masters them to the chosen distributor's specifications. Laura strongly recommends hiring an engineer if you do not intend to make audio production a regular part of your work. Recording an entire book before learning that the files do not meet specifications can mean doing the work again.   Plan Before Recording Before starting, confirm that you control the audio rights to the book. Review the manuscript and decide which front and back matter will be included. Write the opening and closing credits in advance, read chapter headings as they appear in the print book, and allow pauses that help listeners understand the structure.   Audiobooks also need square cover art. Contact the original cover designer early rather than waiting until the narration is complete.    If audiobook production is connected to your business, ask your tax professional whether any related costs may qualify as business expenses.   Distribution and Marketing Laura encourages authors to research distributors instead of assuming there is only one choice. Options mentioned in the episode include ACX, Audiobooks Unleashed, and Author's Republic. Consider whether you want exclusive or wide distribution and whether library availability is important to you.   When marketing, promote the book in all available formats. Add audiobook links to your website and newsletter, use QR codes at conferences and events, appear on relevant podcasts, share short audio samples, speak at libraries, and ask readers or colleagues for honest reviews. Authors may launch all formats together or stagger the audiobook release to create a second wave of attention.   Laura's final message is simple: Get your books into audio. If you have written a book you care about, you can learn to narrate it, hire help for parts of the process, or work with a professional narrator. You drive. Maybe slowly, maybe quickly. Did you jump a red light back then? You did your best but it wasn't down to you. The door slam, lights out and no sign of her watching you leave. She told you that there's no going back but you Keep Forgetting you're not in love anymore.I Keep Forgettin' is one of my favourite songs. The combination of the moody, relentless, deep funk bass line with McDonald's smooth tone made jagged with pain has always suggested something with darker possibilities. Louis Johnson from The Brothers Johnson was the bass player on this track. He may well be the most influential bassist you've never heard of. He also played on Michael Jackson's albums Off The Wall (check out the opening to Don't Stop ‘Til You Get Enough), and Thriller - Billie Jean anyone? A poet might refer to the song's repeated phrase “I keep forgetting” as anaphoric, and its duality is what gives it power; the narrator literally keeps forgetting that this relationship is done but also he is bitter about its ending. In this version I wanted to maintain my favourite parts, the vocal and the bass line, and enhance them with strings and the descending grand piano line that reflects the loss of energy the narrator feels. The later female vocal line can be understood as either the other partner feeling the same or maybe even mocking the narrator. I couldn't decide and I wonder what you, the listener, thinks.I used simple tools to create this: Virtual DJ to isolate the lines I wanted and Garage Band to reconstruct it. 1403. QuickTime y podcasting puede sonar a una combinación un poco extraña a estas alturas, pero precisamente por eso me apetecía dedicarle la Q de esta nueva entrega del Glosario Podcastero. No llegué a completar todo el abecedario durante la temporada pasada, así que en lugar de volver a empezar desde la A, retomo el recorrido justo donde lo dejé: en una aplicación que lleva con nosotros desde 1991 y que durante muchos años tuvo bastante más importancia de la que quizá recordamos ahora.Hoy en día estamos acostumbrados a reproducir prácticamente cualquier archivo de audio o vídeo en casi cualquier dispositivo. Móvil, ordenador, televisión, tablet, coche… en fin, no pensamos demasiado en formatos, códecs o compatibilidades. Pero hace años la historia era otra. Para abrir determinados archivos necesitabas una aplicación compatible y, en muchas ocasiones, también los códecs adecuados. QuickTime apareció precisamente en ese contexto como una arquitectura multimedia de Apple que después también llegó a Windows.Y aquí es donde me interesa llevarlo al terreno del podcasting. QuickTime no fue solamente un reproductor. Durante mucho tiempo venía instalado en los ordenadores de Apple y permitía grabar audio o vídeo de una manera muy sencilla. Nada de multipista, edición compleja o virguerías, claro, pero oye, si querías sentarte delante del ordenador y grabar una pista de voz sin complicarte demasiado la vida, ahí tenías una opción perfectamente válida.También tenía una función que utilicé bastante y que hoy parece de lo más normal: extraer el audio de un vídeo. Ahora existen mil herramientas para hacerlo, pero hubo una época en la que tener delante un archivo de vídeo y convertirlo en una pista de audio no era algo tan inmediato. QuickTime te permitía exportarlo y continuar después con la producción de tu episodio.Podría haber elegido GarageBand para hablar de grabación en Mac, porque evidentemente es una herramienta mucho más completa para producir un podcast. También podría dedicar horas a iTunes por todo lo que significó para la distribución y el consumo de podcasts. Pero hoy tocaba la letra Q y, seamos sinceros, tampoco es que me sobrasen candidatos.Además me llevo una pequeña anécdota personal. Durante mis años como técnico informático tuve que instalar QuickTime en bastantes equipos Windows porque era la manera más sencilla de reproducir correctamente determinados archivos MOV. Eso sí, tanto QuickTime como iTunes en Windows tenían un sistema de actualizaciones que recuerdo con bastante menos cariño. Pero bueno, esa ya es otra historia y se aleja un poquito del podcasting.Al final, esta entrada del glosario va precisamente de eso: de recordar que muchas herramientas que hoy parecen básicas fueron importantes para que grabar, reproducir y mover archivos multimedia fuese cada vez más sencillo. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 382, “Turning Points in History,” Kim discusses how turning points in history affect us, whether they be personal turning points or those of nations. In today's text, we see a turning point in the history of the nation of Israel: the fall of Jerusalem. God had consistently sent His prophets, especially Jeremiah, to warn the people of the consequences they would experience for their sinful lifestyles, but they refused to heed the warnings. May we learn from their bad choices, as well as our own turning points, and live lives wholly surrendered to the Lord.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 25:1-21 and 2 Chronicles 36:17-21, with 2 Chronicles 36:17-21 as the focal verses:   17 So the Lord brought the king of Babylon against them. The Babylonians killed Judah's young men, even chasing after them into the Temple. They had no pity on the people, killing both young men and young women, the old and the infirm. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. 18 The king took home to Babylon all the articles, large and small, used in the Temple of God, and the treasures from both the Lord's Temple and from the palace of the king and his officials. 19 Then his army burned the Temple of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, burned all the palaces, and completely destroyed everything of value. 20 The few who survived were taken as exiles to Babylon, and they became servants to the king and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power. 21 So the message of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah was fulfilled. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 381, “Defining Moment vs. Moment of Defiance,” Kim discusses the similarities and differences between King Zedekiah of Judah and Samson. Both leaders had opportunities in the midst of great adversity to cry out to God, but only one used his voice to beg God to intervene. What became a defining moment for Samson was only one last moment of defiance for Zedekiah, and his life and legacy are found lacking.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 25:1-7, with 7 as the focal verse:   7 They made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 379, “Refusing to Humble Oneself,” Kim discusses the last king of Judah and some lessons listeners can learn from his bad choices. This is the first in a mini-series on the Fall of Jerusalem and the insights we can glean from what led to its consequences. Sadly, Zedekiah seemed like a fitting king to be on the throne as the last bits of the once God-fearing nation are taken into captivity for the evil lives they chose to live and the carnage they left in their wake.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 36:11-16 and Jeremiah 37:1-10, with 2 Chronicles 36:12-13 and Jeremiah 37:2 and 37:17 as the focal verses:   12 But Zedekiah did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God, and he refused to humble himself when the prophet Jeremiah spoke to him directly from the Lord. 13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, even though he had taken an oath of loyalty in God's name. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 378, “Stone Cold Response to the Word of the Lord,” Kim discusses the dangers of allowing our hearts to be hardened to God's Word. Recently, we examined the tender heart of King Josiah and how hearing God's Word changed him and how he led. This week, we see that his son Jehoiakim's heart was as hard as Josiah's was tender. How tender or hard is your heart to God's Word?   Our focal passage for this episode is Jeremiah 36:1-32, with 21-25 as the focal verses:   21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from Elishama's room and read it to the king as all his officials stood by. 22 It was late autumn, and the king was in a winterized part of the palace, sitting in front of a fire to keep warm. 23 Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king took a knife and cut off that section of the scroll. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 377, “God Can Speak in Unexpected Ways,” Kim discusses the dangers of Christ-followers trying to limit how the Lord can speak to them. We see that in today's scriptures as King Josiah refuses to believe God would be speaking through an enemy king, and it cost him his life. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 376, “When Kindness & Generosity Flow,” Kim discusses the natural flow of encouragement, kindness, and generosity we see in the celebration of the Passover described in today's scripture passage. Today, what automatically flows from your life?   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 35:1-19, and with 14-15 as the focal verses:   14 Afterward the Levites prepared Passover offerings for themselves and for the priests—the descendants of Aaron—because the priests had been busy from morning till night offering the burnt offerings and the fat portions. The Levites took responsibility for all these preparations. 15 The musicians, descendants of Asaph, were in their assigned places, following the commands that had been given by David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, the king's seer.
