On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space — but two brothers in Italy had already recorded transmissions from Soviet spacecraft that were never supposed to exist. | #WDRadio WEEK OF DEC 07, 2025==========HOUR ONE: Did lost cosmonauts make it into space before Yuri Gagarin? (The Tombs in Space) *** Don't take a gift from Gracie Watson's grave... or her life-like statue might cry tears of blood. (Gracie's Ghost) *** Did Bonnie Scott run away? Was she kidnapped? Murdered perhaps? All anyone knew was that no one had a clue where she was. She had simply disappeared without a trace. (The Murder of Bonnie Leigh Scott) *** A latchkey kid comes home to an empty house… or so they thought until they heard footsteps in another room. (The Laundry Room)==========HOUR TWO: Just because the Ouija board is made by a board game manufacturer does not mean it should be treated like a toy – as many have discovered. *** The similar game, Charlie Charlie seems more innocent – but is so dangerous that in one school where children were playing it, they had to call in an exorcist. *** And you never know when playing any of these types of games what kind of spirit you might be inviting into our realm – but I can tell you this…. It's never good. They might pretend to be good, but that's far from the truth. And one particular demon has found notoriety through the Ouija board community, a demon you don't want to risk opening a door for. It's name is Zozo.==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: People often encounter strange and frightening things when they experience sleep paralysis – but in one particular story, the horrors began well before going to bed. (Sleep Paralysis in Bangkok) *** Samuel Joselyn was buried in 1810 in a North Carolina cemetery.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Samuel was actually DEAD at the time of his burial! (Buried Alive in Wilmington) *** in 1894 Rosa Lochner was a witness to murder, but she had been deaf since birth and her spoken vocabulary was limited. So how could she testify against the accused? (Murder In Pantomime) *** A boy wakes to find his previously closed curtains now open – and the only explanation involves a previous resident of the house he's now living in. (Strange Manifestations) *** Mention the word “Chupacabra” and most people will think of a strange, hairless dog-like animal. They are never described as having the ability to fly… until now. (Winged Chupacabras) *** These UFOs aren't shiny metallic discs or cigar-shaped spaceships. They are humanoid – and they fly without the help of a jetpack, wings, cape or even a broom to sit on. And the sightings are still coming in all throughout Mexico. (The Flying Humanoids of Mexico) *** The North Carolina Cherokee have a story about how dangerous it can be even near a calm river – where the waters can suddenly foam and a giant beast can appear on the rocks. (James and the Giant Leech) *** Supernatural women, shadowy men, odd animal sightings, and more… they can all be found at late-night truck stops if you're not careful. Travis Winfield served a 24-year Navy career as a Master at Arms, a lifelong commitment to mentorship, financial literacy, and real estate education, all driven by his mission to help others transition into civilian life with confidence, stability, and purpose. In Episode 225 of the Transition Drill Podcast, if you're a military veteran or first responder, you've probably heard the same line your whole career: “You'll be fine, the pension will take care of you.” Travis Winfield lived that life, and he'll tell you straight, it's not enough. Travis grew up in Richmond, Virginia, raised mostly by a single mom, working obs as a teenager just to help keep life moving. He thought aviation was his future, got accepted to a top civilian flight program, then watched the door slam shut when the money was not there. So he joined the Navy out of necessity and ended up serving twenty four years. He as an Operations Specialist, hated it, and eventually converted to Master at Arms . That path took him into military law enforcement, dignitary protection overseas in places like Greece and Italy, and eventually to Command Senior Chief on a small crew ship.Along the way he started selling real estate, then after retiring, Travis built a real estate business, wrote a book on financial literacy for the military community, and created Military Operated Real Estate, (MORE), a SkillBridge and VA approved real estate training pipeline designed for veterans, active duty, and military family members. In this episode we walk the whole arc, from humble beginnings, rebellious youth to command level leadership, trauma, transition, and building a second career. Travis breaks down his “life in thirds” model, the influence of retired Green Beret Larry Broughton, and why learning money, mentorship, and mission early can change your entire post service life. The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Dr. Steve Mancini: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-steve-m-b59a525/Marco Ciappelli: https://www.marcociappelli.com/Nothing Has Changed in Cybersecurity Since War Games — And That's Why We're in Trouble"Nothing has changed."That's not what you expect to hear from someone with four decades in cybersecurity. The industry thrives on selling the next revolution, the newest threat, the latest solution. But Dr. Steve Mancini—cybersecurity professor, Homeland Security veteran, and Italy's Honorary Consul in Pittsburgh—wasn't buying any of it. And honestly? Neither was I.He took me back to his Commodore 64 days, writing basic war dialers after watching War Games. The method? Dial numbers, find an open line, try passwords until one works. Translate that to today: run an Nmap scan, find an open port, brute force your way in. The principle is identical. Only the speed has changed. This resonated deeply with how I think about our Hybrid Analog Digital Society. We're so consumed with the digital evolution—the folding screens, the AI assistants, the cloud computing—that we forget the human vulnerabilities underneath remain stubbornly analog. Social engineering worked in the 1930s, it worked when I was a kid in Florence, and it works today in your inbox.Steve shared a story about a family member who received a scam call. The caller asked if their social security number "had a six in it." A one-in-nine guess. Yet that simple psychological trick led to remote software being installed on their computer. Technology gets smarter; human psychology stays the same. What struck me most was his observation about his students—a generation so immersed in technology that they've become numb to breaches. "So what?" has become the default response. The data sells, the breaches happen, you get two years of free credit monitoring, and life goes on. Groundhog Day.But the deeper concern isn't the breaches. It's what this technological immersion is doing to our capacity for critical thinking, for human instinct. Steve pointed out something that should unsettle us: the algorithms feeding content to young minds are designed for addiction, manipulating brain chemistry with endorphin kicks from endless scrolling. We won't know the full effects of a generation raised on smartphones until they're forty, having scrolled through social media for thirty years.I asked what we can do. His answer was simple but profound: humans need to decide how much they want technology in their lives. Parents putting smartphones in six-year-olds' hands might want to reconsider. Schools clinging to the idea that they're "teaching technology" miss the point—students already know the apps better than their professors. What they don't know is how to think without them. He's gone back to paper and pencil tests. Old school. Because when the power goes out—literally or metaphorically—you need a brain that works independently.Ancient cultures, Steve reminded me, built civilizations with nothing but their minds, parchment, and each other. They were, in many ways, a thousand times smarter than us because they had no crutches. Now we call our smartphones "smart" while they make us incrementally dumber. This isn't anti-technology doom-saying. Neither Steve nor I oppose technological progress. The conversation acknowledged AI's genuine benefits in medicine, in solving specific problems. But this relentless push for the "easy button"—the promise that you don't have to think, just click—that's where we lose something essential. The ultimate breach, we concluded, isn't someone stealing your data. It's breaching the mind itself. When we can no longer think, reason, or function without the device in our pocket, the hackers have already won—and they didn't need to write a single line of code.Subscribe to the Redefining Society and Technology podcast. Saint of the Day
Our Father among the Saints Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra (345)

    Saint of the Day

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2025

Our beloved holy Father Nicholas is, along with St George (and second to the All-holy Theotokos), probably the best-loved Saint of the Church. His numberless miracles through the ages, on behalf of the countless Christians who have called on him, cannot be told.   He was born in Lycia (in Asia Minor) around the end of the third century, to pious Christian parents. His love of virtue, and his zeal for observing the canons of the Church, were evident from his infancy, when he would abstain from his mother's breast every Wednesday and Friday until the evening. From early youth he was inclined to solitude and silence; in fact, not a single written or spoken word of the Saint has come down to us. Though ordained a priest by his uncle, Archbishop Nicholas, he attempted to withdraw to a hermit's life in the Holy Land; but he was told by revelation that he was to return home to serve the Church publicly and be the salvation of many souls.   When his parents died, he gave away all of his inheritance to the needy, and thereafter almsgiving was his greatest glory. He always took particular care that his charity be done in secret. Perhaps the most famous story of his open-handedness concerns a debt-ridden man who had no money to provide dowries for his daughters, or even to support them, and in despair had resolved to give them into prostitution. On three successive nights the Saint threw a bag of gold into the window of the man's house, saving him and his daughters from sin and hopelessness. The man searched relentlessly to find and thank his benefactor; when at last he discovered that it was Nicholas, the Saint made him promise not to reveal the good deed until after he had died. (This story may be the thin thread that connects the Saint with the modern-day Santa Claus).   God honored his faithfulness by granting him unparalleled gifts of healing and wonderworking. Several times he calmed storms by his prayers and saved the ship that he was sailing in. Through the centuries he has often done the same for sailors who call out to him, and is considered the patron of sailors and all who go to sea.   He was elected Bishop of Myra not long before the great persecutions under Diocletian and Maximian (c. 305), and was put in prison, from which he continued to encourage his flock in the Faith. When the Arian heresy wracked the Church not long after Constantine came to the throne, St Nicholas was one of the 318 Bishops who gathered in Nicea in 325. There he was so incensed at the blasphemies of Arius that he struck him on the face. This put the other bishops in a quandary, since the canons require that any hierarch who strikes anyone must be deposed. Sadly, they prepared to depose the holy Nicholas; but in the night the Lord Jesus and the most Holy Theotokos appeared to them, telling them that the Saint had acted solely out of love for Truth, not from hatred or passion, and that they should not act against him.   While still in the flesh, he sometimes miraculously appeared in distant places to save the lives of the faithful. He once saved the city of Myra from famine by appearing to the captain of a ship full of grain, telling him to take his cargo to the city. He appeared in a dream to Constantine to intercede for the lives of three Roman officers who had been falsely condemned; the three grateful soldiers later became monks.   The holy bishop reposed in peace around 345. His holy relics were placed in a church built in his honor in Myra, where they were venerated by throngs of pilgrims every year. In 1087, after Myra was conquered by the Saracens, the Saint's relics were translated to Bari in southern Italy, where they are venerated today. Every year, quantities of fragrant myrrh are gathered from the casket containing his holy relics.

Let's explore the richness of Italian Christmas, a season that unfolds with a sense of reverence, warmth, and continuity that has carried families through centuries. In Italy, Christmastime is not compressed into a single day, nor is it built around swift gift exchanges. It begins early in December and extends deep into January, stretching across Advent, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the Epiphany. Devotion, family gatherings, local rituals, regional flavor, and the enduring story of the Nativity shape this long season. For many people in the United States whose ancestors came from Italy, these customs represent a living connection to the towns and villages their relatives once called home. Whether your family roots trace to the hills of Tuscany, the crowded streets of Naples, the valleys of Lombardy, or the sunlit shores of Sicily, Italian Christmas traditions preserve memories that reveal both place and identity. Italian Christmas is anchored in a profound sense of spiritual meaning. The Nativity is not simply a decorative theme; it is the heart of the season. Families build elaborate presepi—Nativity scenes that may include not just the Holy Family but entire villages crafted with details reflecting local landscapes, trades, and customs. In some homes, making the presepe becomes a weeks-long project, with children and adults adding figures day by day. These scenes are treated with care and are often passed down for generations, carrying regional craftsmanship and family history. Understanding how Italian families constructed and displayed their presepi can even offer genealogical clues, since the materials, styles, and figures often correspond to distinct regions. But Christmas in Italy is not only devotional; it is deeply communal. Streets fill with music during Advent as shepherd musicians known as zampognari wander into towns playing flutes and bagpipes. Their melodies echo folk traditions that stretch back centuries, particularly in rural areas of central and southern Italy. For immigrants who carried these memories across the ocean, recalling the sound of these musicians often became a way to remember their childhood towns long after they had settled in new countries. This blend of village life, seasonal music, and Christian anticipation gives Advent a distinctive Italian feeling—one of quiet excitement that grows day by day. In this episode, we take you through a Renaissance Get Ready With Me as we explore how these women would have been taking care of their hair and skin. We look at what hairstyles and makeup men and women wore, how often they bathed, whether or not they removed their body hair, and how they shaped their bodies through dieting and underwear. Along the way, we dive into the recipes for popular cosmetics and skincare treatments, ask where Renaissance beauty standards came from, and uncover the sexist, racist and classist ideas that often underpinned them. But we also explore how their beauty routines could be an avenue for women's self-expression, and show the importance of the history of beauty, even amidst the turbulent politics and warfare of the early modern period. This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. It's Friday afternoon, which means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to massage your eardrums with an hour of off-season Oilers talk. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed the Oilers' demolition of the Seattle Kraken, line combos, some injury updates, line combos, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about NHL players participating in the Olympics after a cryptic message from Bill Daly basically opened the door for missing the tournament unless Italy gets its rink done. Whether you're hearing about the rink being too small or that it wasn't even ready in the first place, there's some smoke around the idea that the NHL doesn't want its players to participate and is using this as an out. Shifting gears, the guys looked at last night's 9-4 win over the Seattle Kraken and how badly everyone needed that win. From the players to the fans, having the boys crank out their first massive win of the year gave everyone a chance to exhale a little bit. From the big dogs (McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, and Hyman) cashing in 12 points to the way Matt Savoie could have had a hat trick himself, there were plenty of of positives to take away from one of the most fun games of the season. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week that was. With the 2025-26 season well underway, the guys spent the bulk of the Friday episode moving through a range of topics, some related to the Oilers and others not, but that's what happens when the team is playing as poorly as they have been.Checkout the brand new TNN YoutTbe channel!drop a link in the podcast episode: https://www.youtube.com/@The_Nation_Network?sub_confirmation=1Subscribe to the Brand New The Sauce With Ryder & Lisa YouTube Channel!https://youtube.com/@thesaucewithryderandlisa?si=hojCkE4S1rFoSnbvSHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!Powered by @bet365.
