Costco debuted this private-label brand—aka ‘store brand'—in 1995 and since then, it's become a sales-driving juggernaut. Kirkland products now account for a quarter of Costco's total sales, from coffee and batteries to their famous rotisserie chickens and $1.50 hot dogs. But don't you dare call Kirkland “generic”, the brand has built up a rep for high-quality products and a cult-like following from all walks of life. (Kirkland Tequila as status symbol? Believe it.) Sol Price had and idea that he was not going to let go of. No matter how many times others tried to take it away. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [ASAP Commercial Doors Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple. And Stephen, shoot, just as you hit the button, I was compiling a list because Julie and I, we've got to go pick some stuff up and you reminded me about it. Stephen Semple: Glad I can help. Dave Young: Right? We have a Google Keep list. I don't know if you use Google Keep. It's just sort of a list software that you can share with other people. And so that's where we keep our Costco list. Stephen Semple: Right. Dave Young: And it's actually a Costco/Sam's list, but we hardly ever pick up anything from Sam's. Sam's has some things that Costco doesn't and vice versa. Anyway, we're going to talk about Costco, to try to make a short story long. Stephen Semple: I hope we still have some listeners at this point. Dave Young: Right? Come on, we're only a minute in, so I think we're okay. Stephen Semple: Here's the thing I find it's really interesting about Costco. Today, they have basically almost 900 locations. They do like 243 billion in revenue. They have over 130 million members, and they have over 300,000 employees. They have a reputation of paying and treating employees very, very well, especially for a discount outlet. But to put in perspective, they do a little bit more than half the revenue of Walmart. But Walmart has like 10,000 locations. Costco is like 900. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Think about that volume that they do. Dave Young: Do. The product turn has to be amazing. Yeah. Stephen Semple: Unbelievable. It's just mind-boggling. It's just mind-boggling. And it's really interesting to stand outside of Costco and just look at carts full of stuff. Nobody goes to Costco and buys two things, right? It's just incredible. There's some legal things that we need to talk about to really understand the history of Costco, because back in 1936, there was this Robinson-Patman Act that was passed and it prevented the discounting of goods below the manufactured list price. So when we see manufacturers list price, it used to mean something. And what it used to mean is you could not go below that price. And this was to protect manufacturers and small retailers, and you could not do large purchases at discounts. It didn't matter how much you were buying, couldn't go below that price. And in the 1960s, these laws started to change, but large retailers still resisted this idea of lowering prices, because they'd sort of gotten very used to that. Along comes Sol Price, and it's the early 1950s and he's working as a lawyer in San Diego, and he has a client in a jewelry business that's selling watches to non-profit member owned retail operation in LA called Fedco. And Fedco was a non-profit, like basically it was founded by 800 postal workers in LA, and they were leveraging the buying power to negotiate with distributors and eliminate store markups. And there was a membership fee. It was $5 for a lifetime membership for federal employees. And Sol visited Fedco and he noticed that the property was really similar to one that his mother-in-law had inherited in San Diego that sat empty. So he suggested the location to the client of his and his mother-in-law, and they agreed, and they opened under a different name instead of Fedco.

With that said, I actually still think that Solana benefits from an Eth breakout. Sell low. Every day. With a smile.(2:30) People confuse a simple idea with an ordinary person. Sam Walton was no ordinary person.(4:30) Traits Sam Walton had his entire life: A sense of duty. Extreme discipline. Unbelievable levels of endurance.(5:30) His dad taught him the secret to life was work, work, work.(5:30) Sam felt the world was something he could conquer.(6:30) The Great Depression was a big leveler of people. Sam chose to rise above it. He was determined to be a success.(11:30) You can make a lot of different mistakes and still recover if you run an efficient operation. Or you can be brilliant and still go out of business if you're too inefficient. — Sam Walton: Made In America by Sam Walton. (Founders #234)(15:30) He was crazy about satisfying customers.(17:30) The lawyer saw Sam clenching and unclenching his fists, staring at his hands. Sam straightened up. “No,” he said. “I'm not whipped. I found Newport, and I found the store. I can find another good town and another store. Just wait and see!”(21:30) Sometimes hardship can enlighten and inspire. This was the case for Sam Walton as he put in hours and hours of driving Ozark mountain roads in the winter of 1950. But that same boredom and frustration triggered ideas that eventually brought him billions of dollars. (This is when he learns to fly small planes. Walmart never happens otherwise)(33:30) At the start we were so amateurish and so far behind K Mart just ignored us. They let us stay out here, while we developed and learned our business. They gave us a 10 year period to grow.(37:30) And so how dedicated was Sam to keeping costs low? Walmart is called that in part because fewer letters means cheaper signs on the outside of a store.(42:30) Sam Walton is tough, loves a good fight, and protects his territory.(43:30) His tactics later prompted them to describe Sam as a modern-day combination of Vince Lombardi (insisting on solid execution of the basics) and General George S. Patton. (A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.)(43:30) Hardly a day has passed without Sam reminding an employee: "Remember Wal-Mart's Golden Rule: Number one, the customer Is always right; number two, if the customer isn't right, refer to rule number one.”(46:30) The early days of Wal-Mart were like the early days of Disneyland: "You asked the question, What was your process like?' I kind of laugh because process is an organized way of doing things. I have to remind you, during the 'Walt Period' of designing Disneyland, we didn't have processes. We just did the work. Processes came later. All of these things had never been done before. Walt had gathered up all these people who had never designed a theme park, a Disneyland. So we're in the same boat at one time, and we figure out what to do and how to do it on the fly as we go along with it and not even discuss plans, timing, or anything. We just worked and Walt just walked around and had suggestions. — Disney's Land: Walt Disney and the Invention of the Amusement Park That Changed the World by Richard Snow. (Founders #347)(1:04:30) Sam Walton said he took more ideas from Sol Price than any other person. —Sol Price: Retail Revolutionary by Robert Price. Bonk Market Cap: 1.5 billion.Solana Price at ATH while the network struggling is also at ATH is something that's happened before. To the market:Meme coins have taken center stage on Solana and have gotten out of hand. FDouble standards of reporting - Solana reports are terrible saying how congested it is, where on Base fees are bullish for demand, it's insane. Defi: Kamino points to an end soon, Parcl points ending soon, I think it's about time we get some more tokens dropped and it seems like that's the case.BonkRewards are coming in thick.NFT's: Dead, bloodbath for NFT's on Solana right now, if you believe in Sol NFT's, here's your dip.Bitcoin NFT's are popping off, thats right it's ordinal season.Protocol of the week: Flexlend - if you have stables, throw them in there and watch the 10-20% yields flow. Token of the week: I could say a memecoin, but I think I'm going to stick with Solana itself, we saw a 160-212 candle, I didn't expect that level of volatility, but this is what we see in a bull market and I'm here for it.As always, thanks for tuning in, like, subscribe, and leave a review if you found this useful. What's up everybody, this is Thomas Bahamas and we're back with another episode of Solana Weekly. Not the week I expected, with talks of the beginning of the bull last week, ETF released, and the market reacts by viciously dumping. We'll dig into why that happened and what else we have going on in these times of acceleration on Solana.Sol Price: 86.12 - with a crash down to $78SolEth: .03891 with a crash down to .035SolBTC: .002167 with a crash below .00205.Overall market sentiment: you look at this last week and we went from over $100 Solana down over 20% and think that this must be a bad trend. My friends, we must simply zoom out. The etf was in fact a sell the news event. Presidential campaign: Biden has to pump the bags in order to get re-elected or put some sort of positive spin on his political party. To the happenings of the Solana market:Paypal releasing their stablecoin on Solana. I see huge potential here, almost like a way to back into using crypto through traditional rails. Think pay with paypal, but you use their stablecoin. Use those couple hundred dollars you have sitting on Venmo to send direct to your crypto wallet. You can do that with Eth now, but I'm suspecting that you can do this with Solana soon and this could be the start of something big.Drift releasing token/ pointsJupuary madness keeps going - mock jupTensor- nft perps or something like it. Sujiko warriors also launched from the same guy that launched the solana airdrop checker.NFTs - both misunderstood and undervalued per the man himself - loomdart:Helium just launched in Mexico with a huge partnership. Is this getting to mass scale?  I think so.Meme coin's aren't going anywhere, I tried to fade most but i actually just think they are going to crush now.  Some of my fav are the Stanley cup, bib, Wif - the dog has a hat.Bsktfi is something I'm kind of obsessed with right now as well, Solana, Eth, BTC and the latest meme tokens of Solana all backed in one token with insane farming incentives. Seems like a lot of chads are in it, still need to do more research, but I'm in.Wallet talk - Backpack has been putting in some work and it's performance is excellent. This is a public episode. What's up everybody it's Thomas Bahamas and you are here for another episode of Solana Weekly. It's the bull market and we are in full swing with the Crypto Undeads hyping up the NFT market and selling out a 10k pfp instantly, sol is looking great, and yes Jupiter's airdrop is on it's way at the end of the month. We've got a lot to cover and it seems like Franklin Templeton with Trillions under management have hired an intern and have taken to pumping our bags on Twitter. I'm loving it and we'll dig into all of these and see what we need to do to prep for this bull run. Sol Price - $101.78 up a small amount from last week, but not quite out of this consolidation. $140 is the short term target with not much in the way after that to $200. SOLETH - .04022 - kind of chopping here which is good, we'll see this go up more. SOLBTC .00238 - not bad, not bad at all. The BTC ETF has been massive, tons of flows, some of it out of GBTC to other ETF's but it's something like 4.5 billion dollars worth of flows and all of this will be positive for our space in general. I'm hoping this leads to my ETHE pumping more and would love to unwind that position. Crypto undead NFT drop - 20 sol, down to 11, then we go to the absolute moon? Got me all excited, can't tell if it's a rug or a moon, the drop of tombstones wasn't cool, but I'm ready and my bags are packed. Either way I think this is getting some hype to NFT's on Solana and would love to see this go to the moon. New Solana phone! I aped the 2nd Solana phone, slightly cheaper, and maybe it will be slightly easier to use. Either way seeing how the first phone went I think it financially made sense and I want to keep supporting them. Even if it flops and we don't get 10k airdropped right away, it will be a great hardware wallet. Helium- added a new line, can't get over how good this is. Mockjup dropped and Jupuary is getting me all jacked up.Bull market prep-Sleep is still necessary. Health is still incredibly important, both physical and mental.Shiny objects go up and down. You don't need to hit them all.Keep your high conviction and most your portfolio in those and keep them untouched. Set targets - whether that's sell limit orders or alerts on trading view, have a plan and execute Cobies triangle.People always buy too quick on the way up and sell too slow on the way down. Take some profits. Couple % here and there. Life changing money - take it out, most people start acting very irrationally with access to too much $ so quickly. Chart your largest holdings vs Bitcoin not usdc. Curate good news inflow and actually do research if you're going to put a good chunk into anything. Motives of people are to make money, bag shilling will be everywhere and will be tempting. Don't click links - scams will get better. Froth at the top will feel like you can't miss. You will never catch the exact pico top or bottom. Just get near it and you're doing better than most. Understand your strengths and what got you here. It likely wasn't high leveraged positions or wild meme coins, holding strong coins for a while usually does it, the rest is just distraction. All That is advice I've accumulated over the years and am hoping to take with me into battle. We have a massive opportunity on our hands and are still early. My plan is to stake and hold Sol, target is $400. Hold bonk until 10 billion mcap, probably won't make this the whole way. Increase sol holdings through other sol tokens listed on Coinbase. Hold jito, hold jup. I'm probably going to not get too deep into NFTs, or at least try not to. Maybe some presales and I'm really looking at the Kanpai Pandas as a long term play. But I hold the Quekz, Famous Foxes, and few others I have. At the end of last year my tax guru said rather than tax lost harvest, just get rid of any NFTs you don't want to hold. If you can't sell them, burn them. This kind of changed my mind about the nft game and makes me just want to hold quality and not care about flipping as much. Please do reach out to the man Cryptotaxsux on Twitter if you also are confused with the state of reporting taxes. He saved me a ton of stress and does amazing work. Other than that looks like SMB Gen 2's are downbad, hit 70 sol and sitting around 75 right now with gen 3 at 7. I had a hilarious thought that gen 3 would flip gen 2. Not going to happen, but I bet the ratio goes up from 1-10 to something like 1-5. Think about it, you get all the perks of the gen 2's and none of the downside. You don't have to vote or see the gen 2 chat, it's 1/10th the cost, the team got fired, art is better, supply got reduced from 15k -10k, and you don't have a massive investment in the hands of a group of people that are working against themselves. Let's have a good run here and get that bread. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit thomasbahamas.substack.com

What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for another episode of Solana Weekly. Barry said it's going to be a big week and is finally right, we are getting legitimized.Let's take a look at how a BTC ETF will impact our bags, the btc price, the whole crypto ecosystem, and how we set ourselves up to benefit off of it.Sol Price - 97.13 and looking like it's ready to pop up.SolEth - .04 - slight dip here, Eth and Eth beta plays are catching a bid.SolBTC - .00209 - this is an interesting one because Sol was mimicking BTC's price action on these wild swings. What were the wild swings you ask? Well the freaking SEC's twitter account was hacked yesterday and they released that the BTC ETF was officially approved.Bonk of course is pumping - at .00001503 and I will simply smooth brain hold this longer thanSaga Phone continues to crush.Helium - again, this is seeming more and more like a no brainer to switch over to.Focus on the majors, as tempting as it is, I think this is the time to sit in spot and sit in majors. Coinbase convoSMB can't catch a break.Quekz floor is down, but the vibes haven't left, the whales simply hold, 250k treasury for parties, centered around fun. So I will keep holding.Airdrop Update:Jupiter will be the biggest of the year as far as wide distribution and total value.Margin is being overlooked, once they convert points to tokens we could see massive wealth effects. I've added significantly to my lending after thinking about this.Drift - contender for coming out with something massive. Kamino is dropping their points system soon, this could be big .Samo did an airdrop to Saga holders and made a tool to airdrop holders of the Genesis NFT token. My guess is after the Jup drop we see NFT's catch a raging pump and we unfortunately see a ton more memecoins go to the moon. I hope the usedcar and urmom coin go to the moon and we all make it. There's going to be so much opportunity and so much fun out there I can't wait. Let's get onchain and have some fun out there. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for another episode of Solana Weekly. I'm here to uncover the alpha, break down what's going on, and try to figure out where Solana is taking us. We got wars, we got taxes, and we got Breakpoint coming up. To the market:Sol Price 22.19 - fairly flat, down about a dollar. Sol Eth - .014, still fairly flat. Lot of talk out there about eth not having the narrative these days. Sol BTC - fairly flat as well, but it looking bad. We got breakpoint coming up end of the month and I'm expecting a sol pump and some sick new announcements. War - expectation of coins going down and all risk assets are rocky. NFT's and niche alt coins aren't the safe haven needed, but are still doing pretty well. But this could be the inevitable push to get the fed to start printing and we see  the start of the great bull run of all assets before implosion, and it's a mess. Arthur Hayes on the Impact Theory podcast, insanely good breakdown of macro. Not into the impact theory, but when Arthur's talking, I'm listening. I heard some very similar ideas on Hidden Forces as well, and it goes into just how the bull run for crypto and most assets begins when the money printer gets turned back on. Information inflow management - I have to constantly check myself and realize who I'm taking info from. The whole NFA not financial advice thing is hilarious. Think about who you are listening to and who helps you think more clearly about markets. Don't give your fav nft influencer credit for being a macro genius and a war expert, there are a lot of people who have dedicated their lives to that. I also think it would be hilarious to pick your brain and think about why you bought something and if it was an influencer that you wouldn't take advice about anything on. Socialfi is stupid and it's a circle jerk for crypto people. Two main additions to sol with Friendzy.gg launching chat and hub3 launching. I think Friendzy has more potential for Solana because of the bonding curve not being as aggressive. On hub 3 the pricing increases significantly, like a friend tech. Solana people are cheap. Me included. Avax's friend tech competitor stars arena was hacked twice in a day and drained for 3 mill. We get reminded of the douchey founder emin gun by him saying it's not big. We should also remember he hired a law firm to sue Solana labs. Taxes: I did it, I paid Crypto Tax Made Easy to fix my taxes for the 2022 year. He brought 36k in gains down to 6k. I have the netrunner nft and used their platform but I didn't like it. So I used the website crypto tax calculator and imported my wallets and exchange transactions. It was a mess with 12k transactions and they were all labeled wrong and it scared the f out of me. I knew it was wrong with giving me huge gains on stable coin swaps and no cost basis, but I also didn't know how to fix it. The platforms aren't there. It was like $600 to import all those transactions and two g's for him to do all the work, but the peace of mind knowing that I don't have a 36k tax liability hanging over me and the potential for the irs to come after are more than worth it. I love crypto and want to keep this as a positive impact on my life so I think it was necessary. I also f'd up and sold a bunch of eth and btc on Blockfi and there is no way that those transactions aren't going to the irs. My new rule is to never do sales on exchanges. Exchanges are for stablecoins and on and off ramping only. It's free to on-ramp, the execution and swap costs are better on chain anyways, and the reported gains aren't accurate yet. So there is NO benefit for me. We need large audiences and bringing in new people. So far all it does is make a better circle jerk for us crypto peeps. This does nothing for our space but let us gamble more. Not improving anything. The whole purpose of using social media is to bring in outsiders to crypto. Think 2017 bull run and how insane twitter was. I even had people shilling lite coin on my Facebook feed. Pomp would get on the news and everyone would go crazy. The positive memes resignated and brought people and institutions in.We don't have that anymore. Twitter is filled with crypto scam accounts that Normies hate, engagement and our feeds are trash, I have to go to private chats to see the quek tweets. None of these protocols are optimizing for the right thing which is getting outsiders in. No one is paying 5k just to hear market analysis from someone that larps as a car on Twitter, no one is bridging to Avax to buy your keys because none of that fixes a problem for Normies. We need to clean up the crypto scams collectively and get out of our own little bubbles. Find a way to build on x to make things better. Use the tools they provide like community notes and reporting accounts tagging people. Other fun stuff: breakpoint is coming! I got some Quek merch, it's sick.MadLads coming with some sort of announcements. Huge update on backpack where you can easily lock your nft in your wallet. SMB gen 3 continues to go down. I am tax loss harvesting the ones I bought after mint and buying borderline grails for under 10 sol. Outlook isn't great but I need more losses to offset gains and I don't bet against the monkes. I think defi is continuing and not going anywhere. Had a dream that drift dropped a coin and became the biggest defi protocol ever. Honestly it could happen, it's that good. Yes it's got perps, but it's got Lend, borrow, earn, swaps, and everythingIs so clean. I appreciate you all tuning in and would like you all to think twice before spreading any fud, fudding is easy, finding positivity and spreading it is hard. Hard but positive. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for another episode of Solana Weekly. This is episode number 42 and that is significant because if you have read “A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy” you would know that this is actually the answer to everything. I'm here to uncover the alpha, break down what's going on, and try to figure out where Solana is taking us. Some of the highlights of the week were a pretty major crash across the market, Visa releasing their research into why they chose Solana for settlement, and NFT's are starting to show some light at the end of the tunnel. To the market:Sol Price: $18.41 and looking like it wants a little higher. We caught a major drop from 19.30 to 18 and it didn't look pretty. We saw frontrunning and massive short interest from all sides after seeing FTX amounts of SOL that could be unlocked. I think most of that was overplayed and the dumping will take place over months and it won't be a massive drop. But still the market doesn't look great and I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit $14 or $25 next week. Short term we will keep seeing volatility both ways, long term we go up. Breaking news, I just heard from my intern, assistant, and maid that we have wicked down to 18 and we need to look into buying the dip. SolEth- .01145 with a decrease of 5% on the week. Not bad considering Sol dumped before ETH did. My money is on Sol outperforming ETH throughout the year. I bridged some ETH over to SOL and placed bids with it on SOL if we do dip more. I figure it's time to up the size a bit. SolBtc - down 11% on the week. This is bad, Bitcoin performing as it should with being more of a store of value. Visa settlement on Solana and they released their analysis. This is huge because it's an independent analysis and validates all the attributes of the network that we've been talking about. They went through a ton of research on different blockchains and Solana was a clear favorite. Some of the best were the 400 ms settlement time, interesting Polygon was 20 minutes, the low cost of transactions and the fact that the transaction cost doesn't fluctuate over time, and that it's the best suited chain for payments. We like this, and Solana didn't pay for this, they chose Solana. MetaMask has support for Solana! The best wallet in crypto released a new feature called snaps. With this, it allows it to use other blockchains and integrate with other wallets. For Solana you can basically link a MetaMask with a Solflare wallet. Then you can bridge back and forth very easily. Also native btc and other chains. But this is a pretty sick development. Manage your money from MetaMask while you adventure into the wild world of Solana. Big for eth to sol adoption. How much adoption can we expect? We'll see, it's my belief that eth community already joined in and most got burnt and went back to eth. Kind of similar to bitcoiners moving to eth and losing money to scams and ico's in 2017, then calling all coins other than btc an alt coin scam. But this might give them another reason to revisit and make that journey easier. Removing the friction will always be good. Solana tanks. FTX threat of selling is looming and the timeline is miserable. NFT's and joy. Small increases in nft prices around and I'm liking it. But what I want to talk about is the NFT's that I buy that make me smile. My favorite is the SolSunsets project and I just added another. They are so well done, perfect twitter banners, and just brings me joy. These are the projects that I recommend you buy. Who cares about the chart, who cares about the roadmap and utility, the core of what you're buying is the nft. A tale of two extremes of the nft dao spectrum. Quekz - quektator, impulsive, owner, rules with iron fist, makes changes on a whim, doesn't care about governance or actually really want to interact with most holders haha. This is super appealing because I actually don't really care about the day to day either, I just want to laugh and have fun. Smb - oh boy. DAO, votes, vote proposals, weekly meetings, constant bickering, it's very tiresome. Magic Eden hinting at a token drop and people are trying to farm gems or something. Cant tell if this is a last cry of hope for them or if it will be successful. Tensor has eaten their lunch and have been public about their rewards, token drop, and their platform is a revolution. Speaking of airdrops, I got one for Alldomains, the other name service provider on Solana that hosts the .monke or .bonk addresses. Bought some more on the side because I saw it pop up on Bonkbot in Telegram, but the liquidity isn't there, I even am providing some liq, but it's not helping haha. This is a public episode. El perrito caliente de Costco de 1,50 dólares desafía a la inflacion y no sube de precio desde 1985

Historias de la economía

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2023 8:11

What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for another episode of Solana Weekly. Here to drop some alpha on what's going on and where we're going in this crazy space. It's been a trying week where it seems like there is just no bullish news. These are the best of times to buy, but the hardest of times to actually pull the trigger. Excited to dig into it and let's focking go. To the market:Sol Price: $21.43 with an overall decrease of 8% on the week. We don't like to see that, but we're in a recovery from dipping under $20 yesterday so I'm ecstatic about this move up haha. Whole market looked like it was tanking including Bitcoin and the doomers and bears were out in full force giving us their graphs of how low we go. Well I spent my time loading up on longs, so suck it bears. SolEth- .01278 with a small decrease of 1% and nothing meaningful to gain from this really. Everything tanked, Eth looked real bad. SolBtc - Also staying pretty flat. To the news: HNT on Drift. I got a Fock It Shirt, it's Mad, I'm wearing it now, LFG. Solana Pay on Shopify, I think this is huge and we should get a bounce for it.Sign in with Solana.Blaze airdrop has begun, and with it the bSOL token is getting something like 15% apr. Friend.Tech is taking over all of crypto and is bringing social fi back. With this we are seeing Solarplex launching on Solana and I gotta give a shout out to Solcial, kind of like a bitclout like product where people buy your token for a follow and tier 2access. These have huge potential and are fun. Solarplex is like all of Solana Twitter. NFT's still down while ducks stay up, 20 ducks for private Telegram and whales don't sell. SMB's sitting around 8 sol, think it's good value. My man Bully Esquire had a great tweet where he said with the adoption of Layer 2's on Eth why are other L1's even necessary. We need to be able to answer this question clearly and concisely, without the technical jargon and hopes and dreams of a bagholder attached to it .The answer, most aren't. What other L1's are necessary for is what can't be done on Eth L1 or L2's. The two most popular answers are DePin and Compression. DePin - Decentralized physical infrastructure is Helium, it's a mobile network incentivized through a blockchain that HAS to be as fast and cheap as Solana or it won't work. Compression - NFT's can be compressed so well on Solana that you can give an NFT to a brand new user for free. Drip.Haus does this. You don't have to pay to get the NFT. Also the core of the question is a bit flawed right. The goal for Ethereum with L2's is to scale a decentralized network which means increase both speed and decrease transaction costs for the masses. This goal is not there. This goal is what Solana is right now at this moment. So other L1's are necessary because they are brining about the new paradigm where cryptocurrencies can scale and be used for non crypto native users. Eth will never have that. Other than that I saw some bearish posts on DeFi and how it hasn't actually been that successful. We saw Balancer get compromised and the only profitable Defi players are the hackers at this point. So I'm cautiously optimistic about Sol Defi. We saw Cypher get hacked and I just don't want to deal with all the extra risk at this point. So I pulled my Margin lends. This is a public episode. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for episode number 37 of Solana Weekly. Here to drop some alpha on what's going on and where we're going. This was another crazy week with one of the leading Defi protocols on Solana getting hacked, Tensor launching their NFT project and Rollbit sending to the moon. Never a dull week and I'm looking forward to diving in. To the market:Sol Price: $24.38 with an overall increase of 5% on the week. Not a bad week with a good push in the price action starting yesterday. We saw a low of just under 22.50 and a high of almost 25, so not that much volatility and I'm hoping we continue on the upside. SolEth- .01305 with an increase of 14% on the week. Eth acting like a stablecoin these days. Doesn't dip, doesn't pump. Hearing more of their deflationary narrative and how people aren't ready for a token that burns itself, and a talks of and ETH ETF if BTC get's one through. So yea I'll take a 14% gain vs ETH. SolBtc - flat on the week. Interesting here, we're keeping pace with Bitcoin even when Eth underperforms. I'd like to call that bullish but we'll see. Gambling vs investing long talk.As we see Product Market Fit in Rollbit while I miss the pump and sit on the sidelines, we've gotta have the gambling talk. PMF in crypto has always been gambling. Gamblers are willing to take more risk on risky platforms and have likely been burned a bunch prior to their entry into crypto. This is how I got here, online poker sites weren't keeping customer funds separate from operational funds and ended up going bust and taking everyone's money. Crypto solved this. Also to get funds on was dicey. I've bought phone minutes that transferred to Party Poker, I've had random debit cards I could only withdraw so much cash on, I've received faulty checks from Asia, I've even transferred money at a Western Union in a grocery store to load up my account one time. All these were BS and bitcoin fixed all the problems. Now add in the everything casino and we have gamblers all over the place. I think that this is some of the underlying problems were seeing in the markets, and I think that SOL's unique properties highlight this much better. What does that mean? That means you can utilize basically 0 transaction fees and feed the gambler in you. Mint coming up? Max mint, dump any NFT's that aren't rare. You can do that profitably on SOL where it's too expensive to do that on Eth. The meme of listing just under floor is real because a small loss on 5 NFT's while given the chance to 10x on one or two is a gamble a lot are willing to take. So where does that leave us? With a lot of gamblers in Sol, and even Eth native people using it as gambling to get in and get out. Where Eth has more of a forced investment due to fees. I don't know how we get out of that, but it is and will always be an important narrative with crypto. Rollbit moving to Eth seems like it's bringing in more people to the table and this thing is going uponly. With that in mind I think it's important to try to figure out investments that aren't a gamble. Minting most NFT's are a gamble, but if it's from a top project in the space? Might be out of the gambling range. We need to look at tokens and nft's that will increase value based on usage of protocol's. I think we get out of the gambling range and move to investing to make continued gains. Buying and holding good projects has always been the way to make money. Take some swings, size appropriately, and put a long time frame on it. With willingness to add to the position. DCAing is a solid meme because it typically works. I like a good gamble as much as the next person, but my expectation isn't that I'll get rich off it, that's where investing comes in. Cypher hacked to the tune of 1 million. Devastating blow to Solana defi, but powering through. Tensorians - launched and crushing. I imagine this goes up only, it's the flagship product of the flagship nft marketplace on the chain with the most nft activity. Feels like a smooth brain play. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for episode number 36 of Solana Weekly. Here to drop some alpha on what's going on and where we're going. This was an insane week in the EVM world and it looks like Eth Defi could just all implode. But we're still thriving in SOL and got a lot to go through. I'm going to get into some moon math and see if the Twitter consensus of Sol hitting $500 in 2025 has any real chance of happening. Sol Price: $23.11 with an overall decrease of 7.26% on the week. SolEth- .01143 - with an overall decrease of 6.42%, WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO US? SolBtc - down 4.6% on the week. So down vs the market and we hate to see it.Alright let's get to the market and to some moon math. The Solana narrative is here and everyone seems to be on board with Solana, many seeing it hitting somewhere around $500 by 2025 and let's see how we can get there.BTC Halvening I think the Halvening, combined with the ETF narrative could be huge.Eth moon's, Solana gains. The .1 narrative that Z has brought up. BTC goes up, Eth goes up, Sol goes up is still in play. These are all pretty moon mathy scenarios, but all have potential. A touch on some other news:bSol - airdrop szn has begunKanpai pandas dropping soon on Solana. Think it's huge because it brings eth to sol.Raffling Rolex's on Famous Foxes Raffles - insane.Bonk - SVBonk, some sort of lottery ticket scheme, someone took down 50k. This is a public episode. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for episode number 31 of Solana Weekly. Here to drop some alpha on what's going on and where we're going. We have kind of flattened out as far as price action goes, but we've got some NFT action going on. I spent my morning trying to mint Gen 3 SMB's and failing. I'm going back after it a little later today and I'm all jacked up. Sol Price: $16.18 - down from 16.91 and about 4%. Overall I'm okay with it We didn't fill the gap to 23, but we also didn't dip from massive amounts of Robinhood dumping. They had millions of Sol and were to dump it, we remain unaffected. The outlook on sol long term is real good and the value prop has never been clearer. The price is still not reflecting it. I'm okay with it. Sol Eth down 4% to .00877 and Eth continues to hold strong. We just can't catch a break against our friendly foes in the Eth community. I can't mention Eth without bringing up the Azuki fiasco. One of the top NFT's in their community, they dropped a gen 2 and raised 40 mill off of it. The kicker, it's almost the exact same art. The second kicker, there are a bunch of twins in the set. Disaster, but also highlights what's only possible on Eth, 40 million raised in minutes. So much money there it's crazy. Think of this when people start realizing the benefits of Solana. Sol BTC - continues to bleed on this. Saw a comparison of solbtc to eth btc, back when Eth almost died, it hit something like -97% vs btc, we're at like -95%, if history rhymes, we could almost be at bottom. Gen 3 baby! The SMB mint to unlock the IP and take over the world. Two main topics Lending - both nft lending and centralized lending Investable digital assets vs usable digital assets Merkle tree - is a cryptographic hash that is used to verify the integrity of a set of data. In the context of Solana NFTs, a Merkle root is used to create a compressed NFT.A compressed NFT is an NFT that stores its metadata within the ledger, rather than in a separate account. This reduces the storage cost of NFTs, while still maintaining their security and speed.Another thought I had is that im going to embrace web 3. I've been pretty pro crypto over web 3 because it's what the og's use but I'm over it. The web 2 guys coming in seemed to coin this term and it got super cringe, but I think it's actually really good. Much better connotation than crypto. I hear crypto I think super shadowy coders in their parents basement. I hear web 3 and I think NFT's and defi and fun ways to rework the way we view assets and the internet. This is a public episode. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for episode number 29 of Solana Weekly. Here to drop some alpha on what's going on and where we're going. I apologize for the terrible audio last week, let's see how much better this one is. I think the theme of this week is FUD! With the timeline down bad and the vibes even more down bad, the SEC calling Sol a security, bags being dumped, we've achieved max fud. I think it's a good time to take a look at our convictions, and then make sure that our risk profile is in line with how we think things will play out. Sol Price: $14.95 - down a total of 27% from 20.68, we're down bad. We took a hit and it's a direct response from the SEC actions. Whether it's big firms not willing to hold riskier assets, or market makers not willing to stay in the market, we had a massive sell off across major alts. I believe $5 billion of value was wiped in a few hours. The majority were the assets labelled securities in the Coinbase and Binance lawsuits which makes sense. .sol Eth: From .01107 down to .00859 which is down 22.39%. We are seeing Eth move from an alt coin to a major. It will likely not be called a security and this should have positive effects across the board, but we are seeing why that is important. It held it's value really well, while we see the dip. There is more upside with Solana, but there is more risk and we see that on the downside. Sol BTC: .0005755 down a total of 24.58% and is not great. Will this chart ever turn around? I don't know, I keep calling for it, but we continue to go down. My guess is BTC might actually have a pump before Sol, so it might be a good time to have a bag. I don't like it, but it might be the way. From last week we continue to see the SEC and Binance and Coinbase fight publicly. The difference that I'm hearing is that Coinbase is in a much stronger position. They will likely have some large fines to pay and will continue to operate. They also continue to have the tokens deemed securities listed on their exchange. While Binance has much more serious allegations against it, from comingling funds to supporting terrorist funds, they have a bigger fight on their hands and they will be shutting their doors to the US. Flight to BTC - many projects up and leaving Sol for BTC, I think it's dumb. The experience is so terrible that it might feel fun at first, but it's really not. XRP - The Ripple case is upon us and everyone seems to think it is one of the last things that can save us. They released some Hinman files, and all it appears to have is discussion on how ETH wasn't deemed a security a few years ago. Everyone wants an easy solution out of this, and I just don't think there is one. Ripple is literally the worst example of a cryptocurrency and rallying behind it feels like a sham. It's basically a token that allowed the founders to dump it on retail and take billions off the table from it. They have bot army's, and have a warchest from dumping on retails for as long as they've been around. Their use case: settlement of funds. EVERY crytpocurrency does this! It's bagholders that got rekt and are hoping for a way out. The absolute worse case scenario for Solana is turning into bagholders without any real use cases. It is my opinion that we're building so many use cases right now this will never happen, but still. There is a bill to fire Gensler, and I'm all for it, I wouldn't bet on it passing though. Sol Beach bum with another banger thread on value accrual:https://twitter.com/solbeachbum/status/1668600382547718146?s=46&t=uc83EyjkPaOcRgJ63RUtbgIt's funny, because you can take the value prop of any big crypto, Ethereum in this example, and play that out with Sol. The value proposition of Ethereum isn't unique, it can apply to much more, and a more useful chain could get more value out of it using their own models for appraising value. CPI came it at 4%, under expectations which is great, and the stock market got a rally. Crypto did not. Overall the outlook really isn't great for the short term. It's time to prep for the worst, but position yourself to take advantage of mismatches you see in the market. While the price of Sol has dipped, NFT prices haven't shifted at all. If you have stables around, you can buy into blue chips for a 30% + discount. I didn't even really bring up NFT's because it's not where my mind is at, their value is tied to the value of Solana. I'm still convinced that we see Solana go higher and now is the time that our conviction gets tested. Solana is for the users and is the only blockchain you can actually use right now at a reasonable price and speed. Stay safe out there and let's stack some cheap coins while we can. Think long term, leverage isn't needed, but conviction is. This is a public episode. What's up everybody! This is Thomas Bahamas and you are here for episode number 28 of Solana Weekly. Here to drop some alpha on what's going on and where we're going. I think the theme of this week is holy s**t, the SEC is coming for crypto. Full force attack with them bringing up charges against Binance and then Coinbase. It's time to be careful with your coins folks and we will plan on digging into this more. Let's move to Solana and check out the volatility: Sol Price: 20.23 - down a total of 2% from 20.68, and it's all over the place, so much volatility I can't even get the price right because it keeps changing. We're getting hit with the FUD from all angles, with the SEC calling SOL a security, and now we got Jim Cramer calling it a counterfeit coin. We stay bullish long term, but it's all over the place right now. Breaking: had to delay this because Sol dipped almost two dollars to $18.50 while I was trying to record and had to hit that long button. Pls recover, looks like it's starting to and we're back at 19. Sol Eth: .01039 down from .01107 which is down 6%. Was listening to DonAlt give a breakdown and he is basically saying all you need is Eth, it's the only coin showing strength in the market and looks good vs BTC. If you look at the chart it has held up well and as we see Sol couldn't hold on as well. Sol BTC: .0007253, down from .0007631 down a total of 5%. Overall the markets tanked and recovered pretty quickly. The news cycle lasted super quick as usual and rather than let the lawsuits get in the way we saw Coinbase go on the offense start tweeting their side of the story out. I'm not sure that was what did it or if people just saw a dip and went for it, but I'm glad we recovered and the volatility is back. Kind of feels like it's just hanging on and people are degening. Let's get into the news of the day. Seems like the entire Solana twitter ecosystem including me is shadowbanned, so that's interesting. The turtles were doing some new launch and the whole contract was compromised, and turtles were on the loose! I think it's under control now, but gotta be careful out there. Zero monke business continues to moon, around 30 sol now, the Bitcoin ordinal project he did is over 4 Bitcoin, so it is still free. Crazy to see the price differences haha. It also appears that Bern and Token 22 was integrated into Jupiter and we got a +90% wick from it. That other exchange Fluxbeam was bad and no one wanted to use it. The SEC started off with a Binance lawsuit on Monday, and yesterday even went as far as to seek a temporary restraining order to freeze Binance US assets. Kind of insane they are going this far. With this enforcement action we are seeing a run on the bank on their exchange. Only problem is that as a crypto exchange they hold all the reserves and are doing just fine. The core of what they are going after is that they were accused of running an unregistered exchange, unregistered broker dealer, and settlement of those assets. Of course they included Solana in this which we are not happy about, as well as ADA, Matic, FIL, SAN, AXS, CHZ, FLOW, ICP, NEAR, VGX, DASH, NEXO. My favorite part of this is that in 2018 they had a Binance employee say we are running a fking unlicenced securities exchange in the USA bro. Upon further reflection of this it was taken out of context and the compliance officer was actually making a joke and pretending to give an opinion of the SEC. It's interesting to see the way that the SEC is approaching this because they aren't just enforcing this in the courts, they are making their case in public with the court of public opinion. Is it the last ditch effort to get people while FTX and all the other class of 2022 scams are fresh on everyone's minds? Probably. Next day they go after Coinbase. The same type of charges and also bringing up their staking program. They also call Solana a security as well as other tokens. Notably both of these avoid Eth. Overall take: We kind of knew this was coming, but damn. It's pretty intense. My first reaction was that this is bs and the SEC is overstepping, which it sounds like they are, but also there seems to be serious problems with Binance and there were no real differences between us and .com and they were actively allowing us residents on their platform and trading against them. I'm glad the coins came back and we're pumping, but it almost seems like an all out war on crypto at this point. Coinbase has been the most compliant company in Crypto for years and often times made a lot less money because of it. So if they go down there is no real hope for crypto. They are standing up and taking the fight back to them and it at least appears as if they have a good case and we can get some sort of regulatory clarity out of it. It's hard to comply with rules that aren't clear and Coinbase has been toeing that line since it started. I have a soft spot for Coinbase because it was one of the only options in 2016 when I was just learning about crypto, and also I'm a huge fan of Brian Armstrong. We need America to allow innovation in business and to just shut down a massive growth opportunity seems like a losing bet. I think we're seeing the tide shift in the public, we have two presidential candidates that have actively stated they are pro crypto and anti CBDC. The current administration stands for so many things that are just against what we need that there its not going to sustain. I think this isn't the end of the fud, it always seems like it's over at the bottom and lets just hope that's where we are at. I still think the political climate will end up being extremely bullish leading into the election year. The current administration must print money to make the economy look better to try to win the next election, while that's just going to be kindling to the fire on the opposition. With that I'd like to say we keep our eyes on the prize and add to the long term stack. Get your coins off exchanges and self custody them. I think the bullish side of this is that there are solutions popping up that do just that. I had a call with Ottr Finance and they solve for this. They are a self custodied Solana wallet at the core, but have so much more packed in it, it's like the coolest version of Venmo. They offer an on and off ramp to your bank account. They offer staking, buying different tokens, sending money p2p, sending crypto as a gift a lot like tiplink, you can have money deposited through direct deposit from your work (benefit here is it shows up quicker in your Ottr acct than bank account and you don't have a crypto buying history in your main bank acct.)Y axis podcast is live, the man, the myth Tristan is back from a podcast hiatus and interviewed Armani for a banger of a comeback. Forgot how good he was at this. He released it onto twitter as a video and that seems to be the new platform for podcasts after Tucker Carlson released his first episode of Tucker on Twitter with over 30 million views instantly. Lastly I'm going to finish with a crypto concept I just heard and haven't heard in a while. Triple entry accounting. Cryptocurrencies employ this system through their underlying blockchain technology. Every transaction on the blockchain involves an exchange between two parties (the double-entry) and is then confirmed and sealed into the blockchain, providing a non-disputable and transparent record (the triple-entry).So essentially the block explorers that we all use like solscan, solanafm and etherscan are actually a crucial piece of infrastructure that show the competitive advantage of a crypto transaction vs a fiat transaction. Don't believe me, you can look on Venmo at your dumb friends that publish their transactions in the feed and you'll see a couple of their transactions. If you know their wallet address, you could see every single transaction back to when that account was created. This is a type of transparency that it unseen and is what protects us. None of this government protection has anywhere near as much protection as the block explorers do. All we need to do is use them, we just need to get everyone flipping jpegs to understand that's just an entry to this beautiful web 3 we are building. That's it for this week, thank you for joining and hope to see you and some friends next week. This is a public episode. Welcome, welcome to the 17th edition of Solana Weekly, this is Thomas Bahamas and as always, thanks for joining. Solana price: $18.85 - Hitting a low of $16.13 and a high of 22, we're seeing some volatility! Right now it seems to be in a bad way lets hope we can turn this around. Sol/Eth: Sitting at .01157 - tanking a little. We'll see how Eth holds up with the Shanghai upgrade. Bob Loukas calling for 30k Eth, so I'm ready for the supercycle.BTC: Catching a bid, sitting at 24k, I'm adding in SOL BTC at .000778 because it's leading the charge now and I'll dig into why. Primary news: So much. Silicon Valley Bank goes under, starting Friday morning while holding 3.3 billion of Circle's treasury. The problem with that is our trusted boomer stablecoin USDC was depegged and got down to $.90 because of it. Panic in the streets. They ended up bailing out all depositors and the peg is back. I wasn't even watching the price of Sol dipping because I was watching my stables slowly die. Bitcoin on a tear ever since. value prop has never been higher. I'm long. The banking system is showing its cracks and our current financial system is being challenged. It's not going down, but it's going to open the door for crypto. Crypto is just better at a lot of things. Regulators - coming for crypto, on ramps and off ramps are what they can control. Get on chain and they can't. This is backlash from SBF making them look like a joke, he exposed their vulnerability of greed and did it with a full on ponzu scheme. CPI print came in as expected on 3/14 and we're looking to go up for a while, it seems like Sol Price is moving with BTC and ETH. Big mints - Papu, and B******s today, with Wolf Capital coming at you tomorrow. NFT LA coming up next week, hoping for big news. Expecting big news from Clayno's, Degen Trash Pandas, MonkeDao always puts on a sick show, bonk hosting an axe throwing party. I shilled Degen Trash Panda's and swept a few, think they are a play. Bonk is so f ing back. Small shill for Crypto Duck Punks. Holding onto support here and I'm hoping we can see us push through some highs. This is a public episode. (You must structure your life and business to be able to survive the inevitable bad decisions you're going to make.)[5:00] Wisdom is prevention. —Charlie Munger[6:00] We make actual decisions very rapidly, but that's because we've spent so much time preparing ourselves by quietly sitting and reading and thinking. —Charlie Munger[7:00] If you get into the mental habit of relating what you're reading to the basic underlying ideas being demonstrated, you gradually accumulate some wisdom. —Charlie Munger[7:00] At Berkshire, we don't have any meetings or committees, and I can think of no better way to become more intelligent than sit down and read. I hate meetings, frankly. I have created something that I enjoy: I happen to enjoy reading a lot, and I happen to enjoy thinking about things. —Warren Buffett[7:00] We both hate to have too many forward commitments in our schedules. You cannot build it in one day or one week.[20:00] Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, “Make me feel important.”[22:00] Buffett: In almost 60 years of investing we found it practically useless to give advice to anyone.[23:00] Munger: One of my favorite stories is about the little boy in Texas. The teacher asked the class, If there are nine sheep in the pen and one jumps out, how many are left? And everybody got the answer right except this little boy, who said, None of them are left. Buffett said this about Amazon in 2012: Amazon could affect a lot of businesses who don't think they will be affected. For Amazon, it is very hard to find unhappy customers. A business that has millions and millions of happy customers can introduce them to new items, it will be a powerhouse and could affect a lot of businesses.[1:03:00] Munger: We should make a list of everything that irritates a customer, and then we should eliminate those defects one by one.[1:04:00] Most companies, when they get rich, get sloppy.[1:05:00] Munger: One of the models in my head is the 'Northern Pike Model. You have a lake full of trout. But if you throw in a few northern pike, pretty soon there aren't many trout left but a lot of northern pike. Wal-Mart in its early days was the northern pike. It figured out how the customer could be better served and just galloped through the world like Genghis Kahn.[1:09:00] Practice! Michael Jordan: The Life by Roland Lazenby. Tap into eons of knowledge and experiences, condensed into digestible portions. Highly, highly recommend. “Uniquely outstanding. No fluff and all substance. David does an outstanding job summarizing these biographies and hones in on the elements that make his subjects so unique among entrepreneurs. I particularly enjoy that he focuses on both the founder's positive and negative characteristics as a way of highlighting things to mimic and avoid.”“I just paid for my first premium podcast subscription for Founders podcast. Learning from those who came before us is one of the highest value ways to invest time. David does his homework and exponentially improves my efficiency by focusing on the most valuable lessons.”“I haven't found a better return on my time and money than your podcast for inspiration and time-tested wisdom to help me on my journey.“I've now listened to every episode. From this knowledge I've doubled my business to $500k a year. Love your passion and recommend your podcast to everyone.”“Founders is the only podcast I pay for and it's worth 100x the cost.”“I have listened to many podcasts on entrepreneurship (HIBT, Masters of Scale, etc.) and find Founders to be consistently more helpful than any other entrepreneurship podcast. David is a craftsperson, he carefully reads biographies of founders, distills the most important anecdotes and themes from their life, and draws commonalities across lives. David's focus is rightfully not on teaching you a formula to succeed but on constantly pushing you to think different.”“I highly highly recommend this podcast. Holy cow. I've been binge listening to these and you start to see patterns across all these incredible humans.”Listening to your podcast has changed my life and that is not a statement I make often.“After one episode I quickly joined the Misfit feed. Love the insight and thoughts shared along the way. David loves what he does and it shines through on the podcast. Definitely my go-to podcast now.”“It is worth every penny. I cannot put into words how fantastic this podcast is. Just stop reading this and get the full access.”“Personally it's one of my top 3 favorite podcasts. If you're into business and startups and technology, this is for you. David covers good books and I've come to really appreciate his perspective. Can't say enough good things.”“I quickly subscribed and it's honestly been the best money I've spent all year. It has inspired me to read biographies. Highly recommend.”“This is the most inspirational and best business podcast out there. David has inspired me to focus on biographies rather than general business books. I'm addicted.”“Anyone interested in business must find the time to listen to each any every Founders podcast. A high return on investment will be a virtual certainty. Subscribe and start listening as soon as possible.”“David saves you hundreds of hours by summarizing bios of legendary business founders and providing valuable insight on what makes an individual successful. He has introduced me to many founders I would have never known existed.”“The podcasts offer spectacular lessons on life, human nature and business achievement. David's enthusiasm and personal thoughts bring me joy. My journey has been enhanced by his efforts.”"Founders is the best self investment that I've made in years."Sign up to listen to the rest of this episode and get access to every full episode. You will learn the key insights from biographies on Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, John D. Dentists could learn a lot from Sol Price (1916-2009), the founder of Price Club in 1963, which became Costco, which pioneered the membership, absolute pricing authority, warehouse store retail model. The membership model is currently one of the hottest trends in retail. A store that tries to be all things to all people will end up being nothing to anyone. A retailer reflecting honesty, credibility, and a definite direction that can be understood by its customers and vendors will have a good chance to make it. Costco's 3 Business Categories: Personnel, Product & Facilities. Costco's 6 rules: Have the right kind, in the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity, in the right condition, at the right price. Costco counts on very significant productivity because they pay high wages and benefits. If you buy into the concept that Costco is the low-cost provider of goods and services and also pay the highest wages in retail and have the richest benefit plan, then we must be getting better productivity, because of every dollar that we spend on our business, $0.70 is on people. There's a categorically false notion that the only business model in the service industry is the minimum-wage business model. Costco people work for years making great money plus health benefits. 87 million people have a Costco card because they have absolute pricing authority meaning if you see it at Costco, you're sure it's the best price you can find. Advertising is cost. The only secret to lower prices ins lower cost. So, if you spend 1-3% on advertising, you'll raise your cost which will raise your prices. Advertising is like heroin, once you start doing it, it is very hard to stop. Word of mouth is the lowest cost most effective type of advertising. Costco saves 2% a year in costs by not advertising. In 2017 Amazon spent $6.3 billion in advertising, Target $1.4 billion, Walmart $2.9 billion. The average markup at Costco is just 11%, Walmart is 24%, Supermarkets 30%, Home Depot and Lowe's 35%.

How It’s Possible to Talk About and Improve Diversity and Inclusion Diversity and inclusion sound like universally accepted ideas, but when we try to talk about how we fall short of them and how we can improve, they become two of the most controversial political sparks in the fire that rages around our American discourse. Many people believe they can’t speak the truth in their hearts, and so they see no path forward. At the USC Price School, we have been challenging this assumption and lifting up these voices to unfurl a path that had been blocked until only recently. In this episode, LaVonna B. Lewis tells the story of this new effort, known as the Initiative on Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice, and she implores us to follow the Price School’s lead in our everyday lives. Prof. Lewis is a teaching professor in the Sol Price of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, where she currently serves as Director of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. You can read more about these initiatives on the “Moving Forward” website at pricediversity.usc.edu. To listen to this episode of Our American Discourse, click the arrow in the player here. In addition, Robert has undertaken the task of documenting his father's achievements. This biography talks about how his father helped create the revolutionary model of warehouse format retail that has become such a huge part of modern American life, and his charitable contributions around San Diego that have revitalized neighborhoods. In this special event, the author shares some insight of his father and some highlights of the story, held at the newly named - USC Price school.
